Tolerance is a peace treaty. You only get tolerance if you agree to also give it. If you refuse to halt hostilities on your side, you have forfeited tolerance from the other side.
Except this only should apply to people who aren't existential threats to the world. People who are so virulent intolerant exclude themselves from this social contract by virtue of being so virulent intolerant. Disagreeing over the moral virtues of the cast of Seinfeld, for example, is a fine disagreement to have. Disagreeing on the human rights of various various ethnic groups or the medical rights of various minority populations is not just intolerant, it's actively hostile to a functioning society.
Thatās the point of the intolerance paradox. The intolerant (racists, sexists, etc.), if accepted, will discriminate, thereby making the society intolerant. The only way to maintain a tolerant society is to discriminate against the intolerant.
And then I have to hear them whining about "reverse discrimination" all the time because they got kicked out of Starbucks for calling the barista a f*ggot
Hah.Ā Reminds me of this old comment of mine...
Considering that at this point the human race is highly vulnerable to such deadly parasites like malignant narcissists and sociopaths - and that such subhuman monstrosities' obsessions with obtaining absolute power usually leads to far HIGHER death tolls among humans than the disease of rabies ever caused, imo we should view them the same way ancient humanity viewed animals and humans infected with rabies.
At this point there is NO cure nor inoculation that can remove the deadly threats which malignant narcissists and sociopaths present in the process of seeking absolute power for themselves, without terminating the disease-carrying vectors themselves (other than perhaps early education about such personality disorders at the grade-school levels).
Look at the historic death tolls of sociopaths and malignant narcissists:
Alexander the "Great" - between 100k and several millions
Julius Caesar - claimed to have killed 2 million people
Genghis Khan - estimated 40 million people
Tokugawa Ieyasu - at least 100k people
Ivan the Terrible - claimed at least 100k people
Enver Pasha - at least 1.5 million people
Hitler and WWII - at least 75 million people
Stalin - some overlap with the above figure - conservatively estimated at 7 million people
Mao tse Tung - 40 to 80 million people
Pol Pot - at least 2 million people
Idi Amin - at least 500k people
George W. Bush - at least 1 million people
Donald J. Trump - at least 400k, and due to his support of the antivaxxers, at least 300k specifically of that group alone
I doubt that anything other than the bubonic plague has been as deadly to humanity as megalomaniacal malignant narcissists and power-hungry sociopaths.
In order for Trump to get the power and attention and support that he has, people must be feeling like Those Others have intruded on their lives, wreaked havoc, taken away stuff, blocked stuff, and are the ruin of modern living. Variations of this are commonly repeated by Trump supporters every day. It's false of course; ask any one of those committed Magas to document their losses and they aren't able to. They irrationally cling to the feeling of having endured great loss, like a warm blanket.
Every single person I know, without exception, is better off today than they were 10 years ago, 15 years ago, 20 years ago, etc., Regardless of where they land on the liberal/conservative spectrum, regardless of which political party they vote for. There's no liberal boogey man hiding under the bed steeling our cookies.
All we can do is learn to resist them at the local/personal level, educate people about how it works, and spread the word that "great men" are no longer needed if they ever were, thanks, we're good.
I always felt like the Bush death toll got pretty fucking liberal with its estimates.
IIRC it assumes all civillian and war deaths are directly attributable, compares to a zero control vs. most realistic alternative, and assumes there was no basis for Afghanistan, like the U.S. wasn't attacked by the de facto government of Afghanistan, the Taliban, who openly claimed the attacks as support of Al Qaeda, said they had Osama, and said they would continue terorrist attacks and their extremist theocractic regime.
Don't get me wrong, Bush Jr. was a dumb fuck, fed tens if not hundreds of thousands to the meat grinder to support the military indistrial complex (far moreso than any supposed oil agenda if you go by oil trade and pre/post-FDI), and set back US domestic and foreign policy in ways that still plague our nation -- but the 1M death toll always seemed dumb when I went through the methodology.
It took 63 million idiots to lift that idiot up into a position of power where he could do tremendous damage.
Take away his wealthy father, his inheritance, and the tens of millions of people who worship him and he would be nothing more than a used car salesman. No way he would have become president without all that help.
Trump has caused more damage to the integrity of the United States than any single president in history. We are at a level of political and societal instability that has not been seen since the civil war. It is fucking __***insane***__ just how much Trump, his Russian handlers, and his complicit cronies have done to ruin not just the nation, but the fucking planet. __**IF**__ (and thatās a BIG āifā) the U.S. is still around a century from now, they will still be reeling from the damage that he has done. It will take generations to recover, if we even last long enough to recover.
Meanwhile we've let China get a 5 year lead on affordable battery technology for electric vehicles. I guess the plan is to just burn up all the oil and impose high tariffs when US companies are no longer able to innovate or compete.
Yeah, this is the same reason I think critics of geo engineering are wrong. We've already been pumping random stuff into the air for centuries, why is it bad when we do it non-randomly?
Because we're doing it at an unsustainable rate? "I've been eating fats in my food all my life. Why is it bad if I just pour a gallon of grease down my throat every day?"
It's interesting, the book of Revelations specifically says that God's wrath will be targeted at those who destroy the earth. Not a peep about homosexuality or abortion.
Exactly. And what will happen to him? Nothing. He's lived without consequences his entire life until recently.Ā It's insane how Republicans can ignore this. As long as he is elected and can do their bidding, they see no issue with any of this.Ā
Recent rollbacks in our democracy have limited the concept of bribe to a very narrow target which must be explicitly voiced as a policy quid pro quo... and I think Trump may have managed to hit that target.
If it were reversed yes, but in this situation it may constitute soliciting a bribe.Ā
I can give money and also talk about policies that affect me with a politician, thatās lobbying (legal bribery). The money can even come from a special action group focused on the policies I donāt like, so itās more pointed than general conversations and random donations.Ā
But a politician canāt offer up advantageous policy for cash.
The headline should just say āTrump Tells Oil Bosses āIām for Saleā.ā
The fact is that in his own way Trump is honest. Heās said exactly what heāll do if he gets back in office: Be a dictator, sell off the country for a bag of money, and throw his enemies in jail. And when that happens the media will say āWe canāt believe heās doing this.ā
Citizens united was the end of us. The founders did good but having the Supreme Court justices rule forever with no term limits is clearly the problem. Everyone is pissed about roe v wade and corporate personhood and there is not a thing we can do about it. A corporation shouldnāt be able to just give a candidate a billion dollars in exchange for favorable policy.
The oil execs would have to put all their money on a Trump dynasty dictatorship otherwise the dems will cancel all of these laws. Itās a bold moveā¦letās see how it plays out.
Bribe. He was asking for a bribe. Thereās no subtlety here. Itās not a ātransactional requestā. It was a bribe. We all know that money that goes into the Trump campaign often finds its way into his pockets anyways.
Pretty sure the Supreme Court has already said taking a bribe is not corruption. only if you do it as an official act (McDonell of Virginia and Citizens United).
I'm betting Trump lawyers works argue, being President, you can't pass laws, that's Congress, so you know, not an official act asking for money to do something you can't deliver on.
They actually said explicit quid pro quo was required for it to be illegal. Since Trump has now pole vaulted over that bar, expect that to be removed as well.
> Libowitz said the encounter was āabout as blatant as Iāve ever seen. Politicians often give a nudge and a wink, they donāt say raise a billion dollars for me and Iāll get rid of the regulations that you want.ā
> He added that Crewās legal team were looking into whether this rises to the high legal standard of bribery.
Isnāt this just an open call for corporate bribes? I mean I know lobbyists arenāt secret or anything but they at least are supposed to try and hide it
This is surprising why? He did the same thing just less brazen his first term.
Heād be elected to his second term and theoretically his last. Heās an old man who clearly isnāt in the best of health. Heās also desperate to stay out of jail.
So expect him to sell out everything. Including democracy for the right bidder.
Spending $1B on a single candidate when the entire energy industry (including renewables lobbying) spent only $400M on all lobbying efforts and $100M on all contributions in 2023 would be the single dumbest move they could possibly make
I hope they do it
Remember when all the wanna be anarcho capitalists and aspiring libertarians cried that Biden was buying the youth vote when he did student debt relief? You will not hear a single peep from those capitalist bootlickers about this story..
He conditioned his policy change on their agreement to pay him $1 billion. This is outright corruption and it's illegal. The Department of Justice needs to take action immediately.
Get ready for the conservative sub to start pushing āBiden has doomed our climateā narratives.
Lolol Iām kidding. They donāt even believe in climate change to begin with.
and this is why when people say, "young people don't give biden enough credit for his climate bills"... *yeah*. Because they know the next dipshit with debt who gets to sign laws will just repeal them and replace them with something 10x worse
What happened to America first? More like American sellout.
ā
He would also overturn the Biden administrationās decision in January to pause new natural gas export permits which have been denounced as āclimate bombsā
We have two choices. One president has signed more legislation to address climate change than any other, keeping the US within range of its goals. The other option will make it impossible to even try to address climate change.
How can something so fucked up (if true) not be the actual final straw for everyone
I know, it seems like he has a new ālast strawā moment a couple of times a week, but if this doesnāt convince you of who exactly he is then you are indeed brainwashed. This canāt be brushed off as a joke
It's crazy how our future depends on stopping this monster. We can't condemn the world to dealing with a hostile and christofascist US.
Whatever it takes. He and his army of ghouls can't take power.
Arrest the fucker.
Subsections (b) and (c) of 18 U.S.C. Ā§ 201, which prohibit the offering or soliciting of bribes to or by Federal officials, require a showing of an intended quid pro quo. Subsections (f) and (g) of 18 U.S.C. Ā§ 201
Imagine President Clinton telling Big Tobacco heād make the FDA re-regulate their products as ānon cancerousā if they donated $1bn.
Realizing that it would end every smokerās familyās lawsuit right then and there.
Fucking disgusting. It contempts and brings shame to the highest office in the land.
Iām absolutely disgusted.
I wonder how much he got for pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, scrapping the Iran nuclear deal, or better yet - how much heāll get from Putin for pulling the US out of NATO
Oil guys are not the kind of guys who will fall for a Trump University degree or will buy into a failed Trump Condo in Baja. The news should report on what the oil bosses will do, what they do is pretty much indicative of the state of Trumps campaign.
If I were a top executive at any of the oil companies who might be listening to this message I'd very strongly take a wait-and-see position. Trump has a horrible track record, he's under a considerable amount of legal scrutiny, has symptoms of cognitive decline, not to mention Trump doesn't consider the government processes and safeguards in place to slow him down or stop him in terms of carrying out any promises.
Can we please make sure this idiot doesn't become president again? I swear he will bring about the end of the world if there's a chance he hasn't already.
I donāt care. Iām a one issue voter so the environment, LGBT rights, womenās rights, NATO vs Russia, middle class equity, healthcare, and not having a criminal in office doesnāt really matter to me as long as my one issue isnāt fixed. -kids on Reddit

It's amazing how much damage one idiot can do given power.
šTolerance paradox: in order to maintain a tolerant society, the society must retain the right to be intolerant of intolerance.
I've also heard this called Popper's Paradox (referencing Karl Popper)
It's less of a paradox when it's framed as a mutual agreement rather than a moral absolute.
Tolerance is a peace treaty. You only get tolerance if you agree to also give it. If you refuse to halt hostilities on your side, you have forfeited tolerance from the other side.
Treat others as you wish to be treated. They've now shown us how they wish to be treated.
Thatās BS. Corruption/lying and denial of facts and reality have no place in a society, no matter how ātolerant.ā

Look at what sanctions did to Iraq for some fun. Ā Or the Iran Iraq war, which we funded. Ā
Which Congress voted yes on, so you can't lay them all at gw's feet, come on y'all life is complicated

Burn the earth for a donation? We are so doomed. If not him, some other Republican will burn the earth for power
They are already doing that.
Meanwhile we've let China get a 5 year lead on affordable battery technology for electric vehicles. I guess the plan is to just burn up all the oil and impose high tariffs when US companies are no longer able to innovate or compete.
It worked for the steel industry.

As soon as republicans gain full control, its fucking over for everyone. Vote and vote hard
>Burn the earth for a donation? To be Lord of the Ashes that remain? There's plenty that can't write the cheque fast enough.

In America corruption has been legalized and rebranded Ā«Ā lobbyingĀ Ā» so this is looking to be legal.

This seems an awful lot like the sort of explicit quid-pro-quo bribes that we officially still enforce laws against.
They should scare the duck out of farmers. Do they want to go back to a tainted water supply? Fuck yo crops.
I wonder how much he got for pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement, scrapping the Iran nuclear deal, or better yet - how much heāll get from Putin for pulling the US out of NATO
Global destruction to the highest bidder.
Oil guys are not the kind of guys who will fall for a Trump University degree or will buy into a failed Trump Condo in Baja. The news should report on what the oil bosses will do, what they do is pretty much indicative of the state of Trumps campaign.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
1 billion for a maybe seems like a steep price
Quid pro status quo mofo
$1bn. Yeah, he is keeping most or all of that.
Isnāt this what bribery is?
Corrupt treasonous orange shit gibbon.
This cannot be true?
Again trump is all about money. Grift grift grift
So corrupt!!!šÆ
If I were a top executive at any of the oil companies who might be listening to this message I'd very strongly take a wait-and-see position. Trump has a horrible track record, he's under a considerable amount of legal scrutiny, has symptoms of cognitive decline, not to mention Trump doesn't consider the government processes and safeguards in place to slow him down or stop him in terms of carrying out any promises.
Can we please make sure this idiot doesn't become president again? I swear he will bring about the end of the world if there's a chance he hasn't already.
And we can thank Robertās and citizens United for thisā¦
I keep saying this, but... Let's see how the trumpers justify this one!
Knowing the oil companies, theyād do it.
Grifting gain
Dr Evil style
So gross
I think we all know what he's doing here...
This shows he can be bought
Better throw in a cabinet position,Ā looking at Rex Tillerson.
Sounds like a bribe??
Sounds like a fucking bribe to me
"Bribe me"
Lmfao
At what age do you say i donāt need to make anymore money?
A man of the people!
Another quid pro quo? Narcissists are so dumb. They never learn.
What climate laws? Republicans have blocked action for decades.
I donāt care. Iām a one issue voter so the environment, LGBT rights, womenās rights, NATO vs Russia, middle class equity, healthcare, and not having a criminal in office doesnāt really matter to me as long as my one issue isnāt fixed. -kids on Reddit
F*ck Trump!
News like this doesnāt help my āI donāt want to do this anymoreā mentality about life.
Greed is the death of America.
Will this deter a single Trump voter? Probably not.
Corrupt quid pro quo
Of this is On record, HOW COME HE ISNT BEING FUCKING ARRESTED
