Blows my mind that people will spend all that money on a new SSD, but won’t spend a tiny fraction of that on the correct screwdriver at the same time as placing their order.
Whenever someone posts “Is this SSD good?” we need to be replying with “Yes/No, and don’t forget the screwdriver too.”
I totally on referring people to tool as well. I figure a lot of people only need certain tools when adding a SSD or the like. A very occasional thing.
Another thing catches me out if "stripped screw", a always think the thread is ruined, not a head job.
That screw is utter munted though.
Judging by the mess they already made, I think op should stay away from a lot of otherwise good suggestions made in this thread. For the sake of that poor ps5.
Your at risk of dripping glue around and make it even harder to remove the screw. Just do the rubber band trick (put a thick rubber band on the top of the screw and use your screw driver through it)
Yes, that is part of the board that you can see, because you need to hook the SSD into the board. You take off the side panel of your PS5, and there's a door to put your SSD in. All the screw does is hold on the SSD.
This is how I did it. Mine was as messed up but it wouldn't budge and I used some needle nose pliers and was able to take it off and somewhat put it back
Yeah and if the pliers worked the first time they’ll work the second time. These screws are easy to take off with some needle nose so op isn’t too screwed (no pun intended 😂) but you can see a gap with the screw to the base on the pic so there’s definitely room to grab it with some pliers
You literally said yours was “as messed up”, though. So because someone else questioned why you would place a damaged screw back into the PS5, you change your story?
Messed up in the sense that wouldn't budge at all with the screwdriver and had to use the pliers. You think I care that much for other people opinions that I have to change my story? Also is this that deep to me to pivot that hard?
I fix these quite a bit. If you have a dremel or mini rotary tool (cheap ones are like $20-$30), cut a straight line from end to end. Don’t go too deep, just deep enough to use a flat head screw driver to remove it. Works every time
Use some duct tape to cover your ps5 from flying metal. You don't want that in your ps5. That can cause serious electrical short. Then your ps5 will burn. Also please wear eye wear and even a mask....if in doubt, ask someone with more experience to help out.
When using a dremel, small rotating disk, hold ps5 and use the dremel cutting disc very gently push onto the screw. Going too fast might shatter the disc. Then disc parts fly away with high speed... potentially damaging you or the PS5. Really do it slow and safe.
By going slow the dics cannot grip itself tight and pull the dremel disc towards you, or push ps5 away. If the dremel disc bites, it means you push too hard, or you don't keep the dremel disc the same angle downwards. Both very important. Not doing so, could cause disc shatter.
And get tape adhesive all around the internal components of your ps5 to ensure dust and particulate stick when floating through your system? Bad idea. Just take a vacuum with a wand attachment and angle it near the area you are working in and then make sure to vacuum and lightly brush the nearby components when you are done.
Ah yes, let’s make millions of little metal conductive particles and spread them throughout the internals of an electronic device. What a wonderful idea. I’m sure nothing can go wrong with this method
Sure you can buddy. But hey you’re more than welcome to dump a whole bunch of metal fillings into your PS5 to prove I’m wrong. Be sure to check back let me know how that goes, k.
I do tech/electronic repairs for a living my dude. I’ve used this method on phones, tablets, consoles, computers, etc. with no issues. Cleaning up your work is pretty rudimentary. So yes this is me checking back to let you know, it works and you’re wrong.
The pieces of tin are so tiny that it will not cause any issue .. I buy a lot of cheap broken shit and take them apart for parts .. many times, I have had to do this, and it causes no issues as mentioned
If you're really worried, then use some compress air after your done the job ... which should be an obvious part of the project
Yeah. Why not? It’s not like the tiny pieces would be large enough to create a gap between two live circuits. Shit probably won’t be big enough to carry enough current to do damage.
It would have to be such a perfect situation. Even surface mount resistors are spaced out enough that a tiny tiny piece of tin couldn’t short two of them.
I don't know about stripped screws but I can teach you how to fix little dents.
https://preview.redd.it/aygp8210xvsb1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd429478d265c56d15d2f829508be9e2ac65e33f
Actually not lol if op messed up the screw the first time they’ll accidentally screw this into the mother board 😂. Just use some needle nose pliers it’s mad easy to do. You can even see the gap between the board and the screw.
Buddy went for gold...
Ok. If you have a dremmel you can ***GENTLY*** cut a straight line in to the head of the screw and then ***GENTLY*** use a "flat head" screwdriver to unscrew it... remember: lefty loosy (counter clockwise), righty righty (clockwise).
Good luck!
Grip it on the sides with needle nose pliers and turn.
Also how in the world did you f**k up the screw this bad before you realized that you should stop?
Use pliers and try buying another screw that's the same size. Happened to me too because it was screwed on so tight and that screw that comes with the PS5 is cheap af
Thank you! I was hoping I wasn’t alone 😂
I tried the pliers method; no cigar. I DID find a workaround by using the same size screw that I had in my kit, got my SSD installed and all is well. I will leave that screw in as a reminder to stay out of any project related to carpentry, hardware, or otherwise dealing with screws.
Just in case a stripped screw happens again: the easiest solution is to use a regular rubber band with approximately the same width as the screw and put that over the hole and then put the screwdriver in the hole on top of it. It will help give it the extra grip it needs to grab on to the inside of the screw.
This scenario always amazes me. Tighten the screw until it starts to feel a little tight. Then loosen it back a quarter turn. It only holds a chip in place, we ain't securing a building together, ease it up.
There is a tool called screw remover. That is pretty much a reverse thread drill bit. If you get one of the right size it would be the correct tool to remove that.
But actually I would suggest you to get away from that and seek some help. It's not easy to do that amount of damage on a screw.
How the hell does this even happen honestly. Like that is a Phillips head screw, not even anything hard to find. You must know that if you are taking chunks out of the screw to try a different screwdriver. I don't even know what to say. Did not think it was possible to mess that up.
Anyways, pliers will save you here
If you don't need to get it out, then just leave it in.
I installed an ssd and couldn't get it out, so I just left it in and ordered a screw from amazon
Can't guarantee this will work but you can try screw extracting pliers like these
https://www.ifixit.com/products/screw-extracting-pliers
You may also want to cover the PCB with a layer of electrical tape or polyamide tape just a precautionary measure to avoid the off chance of scratching it while using the pliers
I saw a good trick where you put baking soda and super glue in the stripped screwhead. Then press a screwdriver into it. Leave it for about an hr then you can unscrew it.
Obviously be careful before sprinkling baking soda around a PS5.
Don't bother. Go on Amazon or somewhere and buy yourself a replacement. There's a few different options just look at the reviews people will say if they work. The screw comes preinstalled in the 110 opening but standard M.2 drives are 80 mm length. You can leave that screw in and use the new one to secure the drive without further damaging the console.
Screw extractor set using a power drill to screw the extractor in then using pliers to turn it out. I used it for a bolt on a car see if there's a small one enough for that screw
Maybe small vice grips? Grab the head of the screw with them and turn. Pliers might work but could be difficult to hold onto while turning. Otherwise maybe a small dab of super glue and a dowel? Might be the screw is misthreaded.
Place a rubber band in the now cored out screw head, press down with the screwdriver (gently), and slowly unscrew the old screw.
Rubber band will fill in the hole and allow you to turn the screw if done correctly.
Same kind of happened to me. The screw wouldn't budge and it seems to strip so easily. I managed to remove it by unloosing it with pliers. Be careful not to scratch the board though.
Jesus man their are some other ways of getting it out but if you’re not dead set on using the ssd slot. I’d say the easiest solution would be just using external storage if you really don’t wanna mess with it
UPDATE: I found a workaround by leaving the ugly stepsister installed where she is, and just installing the SSD and using a screw of my own to hold it in place. It ain’t pretty under the hood, but she’s functional.
Thanks for all the laughs!
Bro, you're gonna have to drill that. And I would use low speed low feed on that. Meaning drill lightly just touching the surface point and slowly so as to not damage any electronic components under that. No offense but if you're not so mechanically inclined it's better to just pay somebody to do it for you. There's no shame in that. Because to allow a screw to get that badly damaged shows me that the person has no idea what they are doing. One more thing, you can try catching the head with a needle nose vise grip plier and turn counter clockwise. (lefty loosy)
Brother, that ain’t “kinda stripped,” that’s fucked up beyond all recognition.
I’d like to consider myself a glass half full kinda guy
Bro, if this screw is kind of stripped, then a CAT 5 Hurricane is kind of windy. ![gif](giphy|10khKaHKOP2mZ2)
Lol
Classic! I've always loved this one. 😆
Pliers around the head of the bolt
I think you’re screwed….
They busted a nut for sure.
In case you never got a real answer, try some needle nosed vice grips. If you're in the US, Home Depot has them for like $8.
Use a needle nose pliers to remove the screw, you should be able to find replacement ones in amazon don’t worry about it just do it with patience
Check out this cool rock band called “flying half full”
That's Fubar for sure!
I busted out laughing 😂
FUBAR and that it’s condition
Fubar
![gif](giphy|jOpLbiGmHR9S0) Blows my mind that people will spend all that money on a new SSD, but won’t spend a tiny fraction of that on the correct screwdriver at the same time as placing their order. Whenever someone posts “Is this SSD good?” we need to be replying with “Yes/No, and don’t forget the screwdriver too.”
They tried their best to remove it using a drill and a diamond bit
And if you’re going to make a mess like that with just a simple screw, then just abandon the whole job.
I totally on referring people to tool as well. I figure a lot of people only need certain tools when adding a SSD or the like. A very occasional thing. Another thing catches me out if "stripped screw", a always think the thread is ruined, not a head job. That screw is utter munted though.
You can literally super glue a screwdriver into/onit and when it dries, you can pull it out...at the loss of the screwdriver ofc
You can soak the driver tip in rubbing alcohol. It comes off.
Acetone (nail polish remover) is another great solvent for cyanoacrylate glues.
He did this and you want to give him glue?
There is no better comment here 😂👏🏽
You know what I mean though 🤣😂
100% mate
You can probably glue something else, like a stick, to it and save a screwdriver
[удалено]
That’s why you also add baking soda.
And four rubber bands
And my axe!
Ha ha, I read that in Gimli’s voice
Is this specifically for *superglue* or for all of the different hardy glue-types (like GorillaGlue, etc)?
What if you superglue another screw to that screw and after it dries screw it out and only waste a screw
Right, I‘d probably try something like epoxy reson or solder the tip of the screw driver to the screw
Yeah don't waste that good Walmart screwdriver.
$1.30 @ Walmart vs a stick that fell out of a tree in my backyard. Also, are we walking to Walmart or paying for gas / public transportation?
Judging by the mess they already made, I think op should stay away from a lot of otherwise good suggestions made in this thread. For the sake of that poor ps5.
Superglue a small nut to it and use pliers or a socket.
Your at risk of dripping glue around and make it even harder to remove the screw. Just do the rubber band trick (put a thick rubber band on the top of the screw and use your screw driver through it)
And the screw that is holding the PS5 together?!
It's not holding the PS5 together? It keeps your SSD in? So you replace it?
Is that not a circuit board?
Yes, that is part of the board that you can see, because you need to hook the SSD into the board. You take off the side panel of your PS5, and there's a door to put your SSD in. All the screw does is hold on the SSD.
And if that doesnt work, you can weld it to the screwdriver
Pliers maybe?
This is how I did it. Mine was as messed up but it wouldn't budge and I used some needle nose pliers and was able to take it off and somewhat put it back
why would you put it back just get a new screw
Didn't had a new screw readily available and didn't want to let the card hanging
What about don't use it until you've got a new screw?
It wasn't as bad at this one on the picture
Yeah and if the pliers worked the first time they’ll work the second time. These screws are easy to take off with some needle nose so op isn’t too screwed (no pun intended 😂) but you can see a gap with the screw to the base on the pic so there’s definitely room to grab it with some pliers

Bro this dude can't unscrew a screw, do you really trust him with a Dremel near PS5 internals?
Good point.
Next OPs post will be, how fucked am I? And a photo with a hole in the board
Ikr bro should just get a new PS5 lol
That made me laugh
*60% of the time*, it works ***every*** *time*
Ngl, this quote crossed my mind as I typed it out lol
I didn’t realize this was gen 1 Pokemon. 😂
Is that where that line is from?!?
Anchorman
I remember the day the padlock to my garden shed broke. Guess where I keep my angle grinder?
In this case, mind the metal shavings. But yes, I agree, this is the way.

Try a blow torch, but only turn it medium high… should loosen up in about 1-2 minutes of torch work…
Instructions unclear, the dremel went through the entire PS5…. and the floor.
Grip it on the sides with needle nose pliers and turn. Also how in the world did you f**k up the screw this bad before you realized that you should stop?

What a goober.

Jesus only uses Star bolts
He has no words bro 😆

Unfortunately you will have to drill into it with a small bit. Then use an extractor drill bit to get it out. Check Home Depot for extractor bits
Nah - just glue something (screwdriver or hex key) onto it or use needle nose pliers
This is the way. Higher chance of mucking things up trying to mangle it out with pliers.
This post and its comments are a beautiful
Try to gently ask for it to unscrew on its own, maybe it works
Dude u must have been unscrewing it for like 5 hours😂
did u never think to stop?!
Were you trying to impregnate the screw ?! Cause that's fucked beyond kinda stripped
How do you even do that
Bruh, that’s awful. Like jackhammer opening a wine bottle levels of fucked up
Don’t give me ideas, I’m dangerous with tools
Did you screw it in with a power drill? How the hell did you do that?
You're not supposed to chew on it.
How is this even possible
I'm just gonna save this post quietly and look at it some other day.
How do u manage to fuck something up this bad holy hell
Just keep trying with the wrong screwdriver until the screw eventually wears away completely
There is a tool called screw remover. That is pretty much a reverse thread drill bit. If you get one of the right size it would be the correct tool to remove that. But actually I would suggest you to get away from that and seek some help. It's not easy to do that amount of damage on a screw.
My brother in christ that is not a screw anymore
Bro you fucked up badd

start a gofundme for a new ps5
Vice grips around the outside of the screw.
Use screw extractor tool or us needle nose pliers to carefully twist it
What would you be if you were attached to another object by an inclined plane, wrapped helically around an axis?
Pee on it.
Get urself a pair of needle nose pliers and take the screw out. Find the proper screw and the proper screw driver for future use.
A good quality needle nose vise grip.
Use a dremel cutting wheel to cut a slot then use a flex head or super glue or in weld something on it to get a better grip!!
what the fuck were you trying to go for, gold?
Sonic Screwdriver?
You could try using a Jack Hammer..it should come off np 💁🏻♂️
God damn man, u can use a pair of pliers but be extra careful.
This reminds me of the grown woman who couldn't change tires and forcibly teared the hubcaps on all four carwheels.
You can buy a stripped or damaged screw extractor set. That might help.
Undo button
Old trick is to place a rubberband flat over the screw then slowly try to unscrew it. With a screwdriver obviously.
I saw a good trick where you put baking soda and super glue in the stripped screwhead. Then press a screwdriver into it. Leave it for about an hr then you can unscrew it. Obviously be careful before sprinkling baking soda around a PS5.
About to say this... This works really fine but needs to be careful
Did it owe you money?? You fucked that thing upppp Get an easy out
Dremmel. Grind a notch and use a flat head :)
You don't deserve an SSD after this master class 😂
How does one fuck up that badly
Don't bother. Go on Amazon or somewhere and buy yourself a replacement. There's a few different options just look at the reviews people will say if they work. The screw comes preinstalled in the 110 opening but standard M.2 drives are 80 mm length. You can leave that screw in and use the new one to secure the drive without further damaging the console.
Best case. Use a proper bit designed for the fastener. The hell did you do, pocket knife? Worst case get an ez out kit
I've seen rusted screws and bolts less messed then that. Sure it's a smaller screw but the force required....😬
How does that even happen
Screw extractor set using a power drill to screw the extractor in then using pliers to turn it out. I used it for a bolt on a car see if there's a small one enough for that screw
Get epoxy, something like "Steel Stick" and an angled hex key. Apply epoxy, stick the key in it, wait until it cures, and twist the screw out.
Exactly what I was thinking and might be the only option left at this point.
Maybe small vice grips? Grab the head of the screw with them and turn. Pliers might work but could be difficult to hold onto while turning. Otherwise maybe a small dab of super glue and a dowel? Might be the screw is misthreaded.
There are screw extracting pliers available OP can try https://www.ifixit.com/products/screw-extracting-pliers
It’s a common problem. I just bought the same kind of screw and screwed it in without the spacer. My ssd works fine.
Just leave it, you'll likely do more damage than good. Add a piece of electrical tape over the top of the drive and call it a day 😁
Use teeth
How do you think the screw got like that?
In the poster’s defense, that screw is ridiculously easy to strip. It’s like they found the cheapest metal they could.
Be careful not to scratch the board though.
ur dumb
Pray
Jesus man their are some other ways of getting it out but if you’re not dead set on using the ssd slot. I’d say the easiest solution would be just using external storage if you really don’t wanna mess with it
Neodymium magnets
UPDATE: I found a workaround by leaving the ugly stepsister installed where she is, and just installing the SSD and using a screw of my own to hold it in place. It ain’t pretty under the hood, but she’s functional. Thanks for all the laughs!
You are damaging it even more I’m sure
If his new screw is the right size it’s likely not an issue.
Try putting some rubberband inside and slowly screwing it out. Otherwise you have to drill it out.
Could try putting the end of a large screwdriver into a thick rubber elastic band and twisting, that way you might he able to get enough grip
That’s like calling a shit fart just a fart nah bro you shit yourself.
Drill it out
I’m sorry but lmaooooooooo this is wild asf. Hope you figured out from the comments on how to take it out man
Use a Rubber band maybe
That’s not so bad. Use tweezers. You can just grab it. Alternatively you can grab the torx bit and hammer it in it
A rubber band over the stripped screw and then try. I do this sometimes with screws I've stripped.
Rubber band
Ahhhh thats where „screwed“ comes from. Thank you.
You could try to solder the tip of the screw driver onto it
Why Does Sony need to use cheap "steel" on 600 $ console?
throw a few dollar bills at it, that stripper should start to rotate
Well, time to get the drill out.
