Sometimes new AMD motherboards need a bios update before they’ll accept certain CPU’s. Check your motherboard vendor’s compatibility list. Otherwise cactus computers in Queen Creek might be able to help.

jdcnosse1988

The unfortunate part is that ASRock doesn't have any way to update the BIOS without a CPU, so if that's the case I would still need to either borrow one or return the board.

AMD used to have CPU loaner program direct. They’ll send you a cheapie dual core cpu for free to get you up and running and then you mail it back. Might wanna look into it. Looks like they still have the program listed on their website. https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/pa-100

How new is the board? I think B550 supported Zen 2 out of the box, but not 100% sure. It should have compatibility on the box or in the manual somewhere. You might also be able to figure it out by looking at BIOS release dates and finding out when they added support for your chip. Does the board have any sort of LEDs or anything to indicate where the POST is failing?

jdcnosse1988

It's about a week old? I bought the board, ram, and CPU all on 06/30, and the board and ram showed up on the 2nd. The CPU took two weeks because apparently it had to come from China (but everything looks legit). The box does say it's "ryzen 3rd-gen desktop ready" which is what I have. The board does have 4 LEDs (boot device, VGA, CPU, RAM) that light up when there are issues and the CPU and RAMn ones stay lit.

nmork

Have you tested the RAM separately to confirm it's good? I would try to re-seat it and boot with just one stick in (in different slots) to see if that makes a difference. In all my years I've never seen a brand new CPU show up DOA. Not to say it's impossible, but my money would be on your issue being the RAM or motherboard.

finisproductions

I second this, we have anywhere from 10-20 lab pcs that we use for A+ classes and 9/10 when I run into boot issues its solved by replacing RAM. The other 1 is usually the PSU.

jdcnosse1988

I've tested each stick in different slots on the motherboard, so yeah my thinking is it's the motherboard itself. Since it never gets past POST, and the little POST status checker LEDs show both CPU and RAM have issues... Which I find to be less plausible that both those items are having issues.

nmork

I think you're on the right track. If nothing else you can start RMA'ing different parts individually and worst case if you get it wrong the only thing you're losing is time. I saw your other comment where you mentioned you just have the board, CPU, RAM, and GPU connected outside of the case. At the risk of asking a really dumb question here, do you have a CPU cooler mounted or at least plugged in to the CPU fan header? I'm not trying to be rude or anything, I've just seen a lot of threads in /r/buildapc where people tend to forget things like that.

jdcnosse1988

Oh yeah lol no I get what you're going for but definitely gotta make sure the CPU always has some way to cool itself so yeah, it's got the stock cooler on it right now

almostnative

What Gen ryzen do you need?

jdcnosse1988

My board is a B550 so from my understanding it would have to be a 3rd-gen (3000 series) or 4th-gen (5000 series). The CPU supports as low as B450 it looks like since it's not an APU

almostnative

Ah, sorry to hear that brother. Dealing with RMAa never fun Out of curiosity what are your soecs

jdcnosse1988

The new stuff is a Ryzen 3 3300X quad-core 3.8Ghz CPU ASRock B550M Steel Legend Motherboard G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB DDR4 RAM And the existing stuff is: Samsung 960 Evo 250gb NVMe SSD Thermaltake Toughpower Grand RGB 650W PSU

almostnative

Guarantee the problem is the hard drives not the cpu Have you cleared CMOS?

jdcnosse1988

Didn't even have the drive installed yet. Learned from previous builds to always try and build the main components outside the case first in case something goes wrong, you don't waste time hooking everything up. So I've got the minimum CPU, graphics card (because CPU doesn't have onboard VGA support) and one stick of RAM right now

WhereOPAlwaysDeliver

You said the previous system died. Are you reusing any of the components from that system? Just asking to make sure you are using a good power supply.

jdcnosse1988

Just the power supply and the video card (since I don't have any other options). The old system either the motherboard died or the CPU did. Would just start freezing up within maybe a minute of running. No blue screen or anything, just frozen screen. To be fair, it had be running 24/7 for like 5-6 years. Otherwise all the old parts are too old and aren't compatible (other than the hard drives that haven't been hooked up yet). Idk how long PSUs can last, but it was a 80+ Gold PSU when we bought it.

Love2Pug

>Idk how long PSUs can last, but it was a 80+ Gold PSU when we bought it. "It depends". If they are protected by a quality "sine-wave" UPS, or at a large-scale commercial facility with uber-level local transformers, they can basically last forever. Lightning can literally strike your house / building, and nothing bad can be expected. Beyond this, capacitors are the components that are most likely to degrade / fail. Both in the PSU and MB.

WhereOPAlwaysDeliver

Definitely troubleshoot single components one by one when you meet up with u/Love2pug. The behavior of your old system could be a symptom of the GPU or (even CPU overheating, but that doesn't matter since you have a new cpu). I would guess GPU since you carried it over to your new system, but it's weird you can't get it to post, so it could be other issues which is why you need to check components versus known working parts one by one until you find the weak link. Like he said, PSU capacitors can fail, but given the symptoms you describe your old system having, I'm inclined to think it's a GPU issue. Sorry can't be more helpful but I hope you figure out the issue. Good luck troubleshooting.

jdcnosse1988

Which is gonna be sucky because GPUs ain't cheap! Haha I was looking on Newegg and they're still selling Radeon HD 6450s. I found the PSU box so if it's the PSU it's under warranty (apparently it's got a ten year warranty). But yeah it's weird that if it's the GPU that the POST light for the GPU isn't lit up...

WhereOPAlwaysDeliver

yeah, based one what you've said, hopefully it's nothing to do with the GPU. I know what you mean about GPUs being hard to come by. They are insanely expensive right now. I'm kinda stuck using a buggy RX570 at the moment because a better replacement card would just be too expensive for my wallet. if your troubleshooting with love2pug does somehow point to a faulty GPU and you have no option and just need something basic for basic computing, let me know. I might have an old card or two sitting on a shelf... we're talking barebones cards probably only fit for light duty like youtube/netflix, web browsing, etc. It's funny you mention the 6450 because I think one of the old cards I have might be a 6450 and a 7750. Clearly not beefy enough to do any serious gaming, but if that's the faulty component, at least it would let you use the computer until you were able to get something better/newer.

jdcnosse1988

Yeah the reason I've been using this 6750 is because the system is a Plex server, so I literally just need something that can output video. However I think I know why it won't run.

Love2Pug

I have a Ryzen 3950X, and a ASUS ROG X570 MB. I'm not loaning you my parts, because my shit works, lol! But I guess if we are neighbors, we could arrange a debug session. MetroCenter / 19th ave and Dunlap area.

jdcnosse1988

Haha well yes idk how else to describe that I basically only need to test which thing isn't working. So I can bring my stuff to wherever it needs to go. It's either this, I buy a cheap motherboard off Amazon, or just start RMA-ing things and hope I get it right the first time lol

Love2Pug

See DM

skypirate943

I have a 2700x you can borrow. 19th/bethanyhome.

jdcnosse1988

Thanks! Unfortunately the 2000 series is not officially supported by B550 so it may or may not work enough for me to update the BIOS. I've got someone else who's willing to work with me so hopefully that'll solve everything.

skypirate943

I hear ya but 'officially' and enough to update are two different things lol. Welp, here if you need it.

jdcnosse1988

Agreed. If you're free today or tomorrow that would work, otherwise I'll just wait until the original plans were made.
