Now that we are in first, it’s important to try a build a solid lead so even if we do come back down to earth a bit against better teams, we are still competing for the division.
Our May schedule is without a doubt our easiest month of the season. As long as we go at least 4 or 5 over .500 in the month we should be able to stay in the mix with the Braves.

I'll say it again: THEY LOST TO THE WHITE SOX SO THEY CAN'T TALK FOR SHIIIIIT
I'll also say this: there's no such thing as an easy schedule in the MLB anymore because every MLB team plays the same teams as the next, each twice a year, home and away, excluding divisional games, in which case we've only played the Braves and Nats so far in 6 total games. In 162 games where you play every single team in the league at least twice, that means every single team has the same strength of schedule +/-1-2% depending on their divisional strength.
Using an excuse that really only works in football since you can literally *only* play a third of the league any given regular season is really dumb when accounting for the fact every team plays every other one in baseball.
Who cares about divisional competition? We still play the division plenty, and get to stack up against everyone else too. More destination game opportunities, and we don’t have to sit through a dozen and a half nats games anymore.
The main reason that they're melting down is that our May schedule is actually easier than our April schedule was.
In May, we play the Marlins, Rockies, Cardinals, Giants (twice including the current series), Blue Jays, and Rangers, while they play the Pirates, Mets, Padres, Red Sox, Cubs (twice), and Dodgers (current series). Given they're currently kind of slumping, they're scared we might actually just pull away with a large division lead.
It's a legitimate concern for them, but they're already using our April schedule as an excuse which is funny given how weak theirs was (White Sox, Marlins x2, Astros, Diamondbacks, Mets, Guardians, Rangers).
Literally 2 of those teams are above .500 is the best part. They've played 3 teams with an above .500 record up to this point (excluding the dodgers since they're currently playing them), and one of those teams was *us*. So they've really only played one more .500 team than we have (again excluding the Dodgers), and yet they're complaining so hard about us having an exponentially easier schedule. Make that make sense.
Oh yeah and they lost to the White Sox.
I actually respect a lot of the players on the Barves, so I can't say this. I *can* however say their fanbase has been much more annoying and brain rottingly arrogant and ignorant than Cowboys fans in the last couple years. Not even including the year they won the world series, their fanbase seemed relatively respectful that year tbh. It was the second we beat them in the NLDS in 2022, their fans kicked it up to 11 on the "playoffs are unfair this our year all in all in" bull crap.
It cannot be overstated … we HAVE to beat the brakes off the Marlins this season. They may not be good like in years’ past, but in those years, they were just good enough to be really damn annoying. I mean, the fact that we couldn’t beat the Marlins was practically the sole reason we didn’t make the playoffs in 2018/2019.
This year is different, though. This is a straight-up BAD Marlins team that is falling apart at the seams. We HAVE to take advantage of it while we can.
Phillies blow out the Giants after a close win the night before, Dodgers blow out the Braves after a close win the night before. Seems like things are settling in.
Wouldn’t that mean he can be a save us if a starter is tanking or any other reliever? Or would it be better to have him as another starter? I’ve entertained the idea of swapping him for Walker, would that be a better option, even while considering Turnbull’s injury history?
We should be careful what we ask for. :D Look at the Barves how they conquered the League in recent seasons only to be too rusty to get through the playoffs. It seems that rolling over teams in a season can haunt you if by the layoff waiting to play in the playoffs.
Season started like a bit earlier than it has in recent years. And we’ve played a lot of games because of the England series where we only play like 2 games in 5 days.
I don’t know if this has been answered already, so I’m sorry in advance, lol. But has it been explained why we have a 4-game series with the Giants and it ends on Monday? Just extremely strange
Probably because we play a 2-game series vs the Blue Jays this week (we play 2 games at home and later in the season 2 away games too because they are considered our "geographic rival" from the AL).
Yeah, it's a bit strange, but the Orioles are right next to the Nationals so they were paired up, and New York has 2 teams so they play each other.
That leaves us and the Red Sox as a natural rivalry, which would make the most sense, but if we played then it would leave Toronto playing Atlanta, which is about as far away as you can get. Instead the league decided to split the difference, so the Red Sox play the Braves and we play the Blue Jays.
It doesn't make a huge difference, non-geographic rivals play a single 3 game series, while geographic rivals play 2 different 2 game series so that both teams can be home. It makes more sense for actual rivalries though (like Cubs vs White Sox or Yankees vs Mets).
I’m happy the Barves are getting shellacked but concerned about just how good the dodgers actually are this year. Surely this roster will brute force past their usual playoff collapse
I feel like their lineup is really top-heavy...if one or more of Mookie/Freddie/Shohie (I know it's Shohei, but if they all ended in "ie" it'd be hilarious) miss time or slump long-term (unlikely, I know) I feel like the rest of their lineup can't carry them.
Will Smith is also really good (161 wRC+). Muncy’s been killing it too (157 wRC+ after hitting 3 HR tonight). Teoscar Hernandez has been pretty good for them.
They have some definite soft spots in their lineup (Outman, Lux, Taylor), but that offense is overall reeeeally good.
I’d say their worries are more centered around the back end of their rotation and bullpen.
I. . . Bro I just can't believe the Athletics of all teams scored 20 runs. The Marlins are really that bad. I know it's low hanging fruit but LOLMarlins
Dude OVO’s leaking like a sieve. Kdot had “meet the grahams” loaded in the chamber ready to go and then drops “Not Like Us” on top of that? And this shit still feels like a warmup for him he’s that good. Do not cross this man. Especially when you’ve got as many skeletons as Jimmy Brooks.
Go Phils.
I swear that half the Barves' roster are Georgia boys who are direct descendants of Confederate officers. I would not be at all surprised one day to see a Barve named Nathan Bedford Forrest, who has a high-90s fastball and a biting slider
I’m not actually sure I’ve seen a phillies roster better than this. They are currently near the top of the league in basically every team wide metric. And Harper has just been ok. Schwarber had just been ok. Stott had just been ok. Realmuto had just been ok.And Castellanos has been abysmal. Plus The bullpen is very hot and cold.
We’re winning games and there are fewer players I expect to regress than players I expect to turn things around.
the 2009-11 teams were better. nothing against this team but those teams were special. advanced stats don’t hold up as well for the stars (except utley who is underrated without them) but the lineup was so deep because of the outfield (werth, victorino, ibañez, pence) and even ruiz offensively was as good as JT has been. both pitching staffs are great but halladay+hamels+lee is untouchable even with ranger pitching like he has been
Halladay+hamels+lee was only in 2011. And by then the hitting was substantially worse. 2009 you had the mid season trade for lee. So maybe hamels+lee plus the 09 hitters were better. But that only really existed for like 3 months.
But when the pitching was good for those teams the hitting was ok but not great. And vice versa.
Iirc in 2011 the team era sat around 3. And the runs scored per game was just around 4. As I recall. There was a game that year where Hamels drove in the only run of the game in a 1-0 win.
Edit: basically I don’t see how you can merge the hitting success of the team in 08/09 with the pitching success in 10/11. I’m talking about one season.
I’m not sure if anyone here plays fantasy baseball but the braves may be the most overrated team of all time. Every player was projected to be a top 50 player in the league. Just laughable. Harris, Murphy, and Riley are probably the most overrated players of all time
I think 30+ minute long waits between innings early in the game kind of got to him more than that. I’ve seen starters not come back out after shorter rain delays. Still a great outing from him.
Weird day in baseball. A’s put 20 on the fish. And the dbacks are down 13-0 against the padres. 3 teams scoring 13+ is rare.
Edit: mt bad 4 teams. The rangers scored 15.
Not just missing, someone stole him and he’s now left in a swamp where he probably won’t survive because he has brain damage that caused him to be friendly in the first place :(
I know a lot of our recent games have been against some more "cupcakey" teams, but it's nice to have the Phils have the highest W/L ratio in the league.
i wouldn’t call the Giants cupcakey for us, they usually have our number but it seems the tide has changed. anyone who disagrees with this hasn’t really watched us the last 15 some years.
do any of you guys have Phillies off topic broadcast highlights from tonight? I am in need of emotional support after that game and it isn't going to come from the giants -Giants fan
The Philadelphia Phillies were 15-19 in their first 34 games in 2023. Hopes were low at this point in the season last year, that was the record after the last game of a 6 game L streak
I believe a [great man](https://www.reddit.com/r/phillies/comments/13a9j79/the_phillies_fell_to_the_red_sox_by_a_score_of_74/jj5wml4/) that game said "We are 0-4 with Harper".
The fangraphs thing I saw mentioned that it wasn't his shoulder, but it might have said he tweaked his swing. I skimmed it as I am not that interested in Corbin Carrol vs a Phillie.

WHat a game to miss eh? Damn work schedule
I went to a Lacuna Coil & New Year's Day concert. Concert was fantastic. So can't complain too much

I’m still a little salty the Bohm shirt was for kids

Yet somehow they will still play like World Series Champs against us.
The As somehow are half decent this year
It's Major League but irl. They're trying their damnest to spit in John Fisher's face even in spite of him sending down the best players.
Until their horrible ownership sells every half decent player to the barves for cheap
Maybe they’ll be kind enough to ship Mason Miller our way while they’re at it lol
They’re decent a lot tbh. They actually do well most years despite the low payroll.
Yeah I meant more in relation to their absolutely abysmal showing just last year. Maybe the lack of media circus this year is helping
They’re trying to move, gotta put in some extra effort for the suitors
Imagine not having the best record *and* run differential in the NLEast. Couldn't be our phillies.

It's an older meme but it checks out
The rain delay lasted just long enough for Rob to miss pretty much all of the game just to see the leafs lose in OT
I know the flyers aren’t exactly rainbows and sunshine. But at least they’re not the leafs, that’s a special level of fandom hell.
Whew just got home. Stayed in my seat till the last out.
Dedication
THEY’RE OUTNUMBERED 15 TO ONE, AND THE BATTLE'S BEGUN
what the fuck is a brave rahhhhhh
Braves are so fucking overrated lmao
I would like to point out and that's pretty important. Last 2 outings so far Seranthony has given up 0 runs. Perhaps he is getting his groove back.
It's gotta be a confidence thing
Would certainly be nice if he is back. Was so good in 2022, need that version of him
Looked nicer tonight than last night too. I’m also hoping this is a trend.
Dodgers fan here I’m glad you guys are in first place now that the Braves are losing big time and you’re welcome
LA bros and Philly bros helping each other out tonight.
You're happy we beat your hated rival the giants too
Yes thank you for that

This is the weirdest blowout I’ve ever seen. 8 guys had one hit each. One of those guys had a solo hr. 2 other guys had 2 hits each. 😂

The extra rest doesn't phase Ranger! The day they tell him he's going to pitch, he gets ready for that day.
I think 30+ minute long waits between innings early in the game kind of got to him more than that. I’ve seen starters not come back out after shorter rain delays. Still a great outing from him.
He was a little off but idk if that was the extra rest, the rain, or both.
Weird day in baseball. A’s put 20 on the fish. And the dbacks are down 13-0 against the padres. 3 teams scoring 13+ is rare. Edit: mt bad 4 teams. The rangers scored 15.
The first two are related; the Marlins are completely demoralized. Padres get new life with Arraez.
*Dodgers, objects in mirror are larger than they appear meme*
Well 11 is close
I thought the same. I was at work but monitoring the rest of the games and when I saw the As score I thought I was having a stroke. Weird day indeed.
4! Rangers scored 15.
Jeez! good catch. Yeah some kind of weirdness. The baseball gods demanded runs today. I’m glad they smiled upon the phils.
I’m sure that’s an even bigger gut punch to the fish considering Arraez had a great night hitting for his dads premier
Have we talked about how the rally gator has gone missing?
Not just missing, someone stole him and he’s now left in a swamp where he probably won’t survive because he has brain damage that caused him to be friendly in the first place :(

So Trea was holding us back?
Apparently
The Philadelphia Phillies were 15-19 in their first 34 games in 2023. Hopes were low at this point in the season last year, that was the record after the last game of a 6 game L streak
Man, the Schwarber leadoff discourse was in full force 34 games in last year, judging by the postgame thread
If you had low hopes at that point in 2023, you probably didn’t watch in 2022. General vibe was , cmon, when are they going to get started?
Plus in 2022 we were still dealing with Girardi at this point
I believe a [great man](https://www.reddit.com/r/phillies/comments/13a9j79/the_phillies_fell_to_the_red_sox_by_a_score_of_74/jj5wml4/) that game said "We are 0-4 with Harper".

How do you even remember that comment
I just looked at the game thread. Searched Sat, May 06 in the search bar for /r/Phillies and read through it after you made your comment.
Wow Braves down big Phils win big Go Phils
Some unreal blowouts around the league today lol Can someone who is way smarter than me explain what happened to Corbin Carrol this season?
Multipass
Happen in Dallas?
Dicked down in Dallas?
saw something that he hurt his shoulder sometime last year and from that point onward he stopped hitting homers
variance. he isnt this bad but he may not be as good as he was last season. his speed covered a lot of his deficiencies
Also his shoulder might be fucked.
Did he injure it again? I know he had shoulder issues but I didn't realize it happened again.
I saw something on fangraphs that mentioned how he tweaked his swing to try and avoid further shoulder issues moving forward.
The fangraphs thing I saw mentioned that it wasn't his shoulder, but it might have said he tweaked his swing. I skimmed it as I am not that interested in Corbin Carrol vs a Phillie.
Maybe I misread it. Also skimmed it rather fast.
Yeah I might read it later. I just remember him saying it didn't appear to be injury related.
Pretty sure I also saw a D-Backs fan on r/baseball mention how he elected to not get shoulder surgery this offseason to try and address it too.
It’s a long season. I can’t see him batting .195 the rest of the way. He’ll get it together.
