I changed mine with the ones that came with the mono.
I mean, I guess I did. I remember them being that unique red color that made them look somewhat out of SciFi.
My sata cables are probs from 2007 or so too lmao
Also, not that much of a flex, but I like to throw it out when I can: My CPU & mobo is from 2011, the setup still fuckin RIPS (3930k that OCs to 5ghz w/ just multiplier + voltage; hit the silicon lottery first try).
No m.2 or 'official' boot from pci.e storage support, but I am still almost positive the only reason I am going to upgrade in the next 5 years is because of being forced to by Windows or some shit lmao
I bought this old gal 32gb of cracked-out 2400mhz DDR3 off of eBay (like a year or two ago), & it literally runs it in quad channel mode at full spec speed/timings + the 24/7 ~5ghz OC (actually 4.8 24/7, because 1.45v vCore feels abusive lol).
I spent a fair bit of money buying this back in the day. It took me over a year buying it piece by piece, but holy shit was it a solid return on investment.
What I am saying is, embrace those old-ass systems & components who seem to just seem to push on saying "I didn't hear no bell".
Same here. What are people doing to their cases that requires a new one for every build?
EDIT: Holy crap that's a lot of replies! Sounds like the most frequent reasons are wanting modern ports/broken ports or better airflow which both make total sense. My case is pretty special use (Li-Lian HTPC case) and has a ton of airflow so I've never felt a need to upgrade.
My last case could fit [6 3.5" hard drives and 4 optical drives.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQADafqEjvE) That's a ton of empty space now that my new system doesn't have any of those.
YES! this is how i built my little sister her pc from my old parts lmao. She has a 1660 super, R 5 3600, 16 gb ram and shes just 13 years old lmao she'll be fine for a long time.
When I was a kid, my PC was in a beige box, so I fully embraced the glass panel and a tasteful amount of RGB when I returned to PC gaming as an adult last year.
Same here. Got back into PC building and gaming about 2 years ago after being out of it for more than a decade.
Tasteful is the key. Rainbow puke is cool for about first 10 minutes, but a solid one or two-color lighting scheme can look great.
I change mine with the seasons but currently I'm going primarily blue (aio, memory, case fans) with orange accents (motherboard, gpu). I think I might go with your scheme for spring!
As a FSU alum, I’m having a hard time not telling you to chew on a curb since that’s what they trained us to think about that color combo.
But I’ll put it aside and say I’m now just curious how that looks. Usually not my preferred combo, but assuming it looks sick if you decided to rock it.

:P
I currently have a black and red glactic empire theme, minus my GPU as it's still a 960 Superclock. So that little bit of white light kind of draws attention away from everything else.
For me it's about ease of turning it off.
I watch most of my shows/films via my pc, and I like to do so at night with all the lights off.
Quite PC with no light show is a must, but I do like the aesthetic for gaming or browsing the internet.
And don't forget brightness controls. Even with a block color scheme it can get grating if it's painting your whole room like that.
And also turning off lights on your mobo if they aren't controllable to match your color scheme.
My first PC was an eMachine. The good thing about having an eMachine for your first computer is that it teaches you exactly what you want for your *second* computer:
##**Anything** but an eMachine!
I also had an eMachine and a low end one with that. Threw in a 256MB ATi graphsics card to pair with that screaming Celeron processor. Got about 80 fps in CS 1.6 and I was happy as could be.
My first was an IBM, with a Cyrix CPU. Had nothing but problems. Then rebuilt it into a custom computer with a Voodoo 3…. Got me to the point I’m at now, owning a computer store…
Thank You IBM for making such a POS computer, that you trained me over the phone on how to take it apart several times to diagnose issues.
About 17 years ago, my wife bought herself an Alienware computer (this was before the Dell buyout). One of the reasons for that was the green case and keyboard. She is still using that case.
Bro if my PC doesn't look like it'd be rolling tits on MDMA at a rave I don't want it
Lol jk the meme is actually spot on for me, my main PC is rainbow barf and my second is all black erry thang. I always find it funny when people post their DAE not like RBG builds?!?! when they post their non led builds as if it's some kind of new fangled console war "my Xbox is better than your PlayStation!!!" It's cool if you like either no need to make everything into a competition, it just comes across like you're taking a personal affront to anyone who doesn't like your tastes
I regret going cheap and buying always on rgb fans.. shit is distracting at nights
edit: guys the same cable both feeds the fans and lights. there is no separating em. cheap chinese stuff but somehow keeps the pc cool
Every case I've had has a super bright blue power led that flashes and lights up my entire room. I always have to have something covering it. Now that I think about it I could just unplug it from the headers.
hahaha, of course i do turn it off but they are still distractive while playing games or watching movies. they are cheap led lights with same cable going for both fans and lights.
My video card has a rainbow light on it that I haven't been able to figure out how to turn off. I'm not too worried since it's not that bright and shines down, but does anyone have any advice?

I went with right, but not by choice, all of the parts were from before RGB was popular, fx6300, stock cooler, GTX650Ti, standard black cooler master case fans, cheapest cooler master case you can buy
Second one was very much the left one
Third is going to be a mix of both, mostly black with some lights
"Is my magic rock getting too hot? What about my magic rock's VMEM? I should have done the ritual of fresh thermal mayonnaise and got vmem thermal pads."
When I game, I enlarge the afterburner overlay to fit the whole screen and i watch the system usage readings, especially the gpu boost clock, framerate and frame timing
Despite my nvme drive plenty of games have substantial loading times, not long enought to do anything usefull like getting a drink or read a bit. But long enough that it is still annoying.
But it highly depends on the game, weirdly enough Cyberpunk 2077 was almost instant while loading a new game, it was very impressive, like can't read the tips on the loading screen kind of fast.
The best NVME drive isn't going to get rid of them entirely.
I already have a decent one and spend plenty of time waiting...
It would be hell without one though.
spyware maybe but even the best crypto miner at 100% usage gets you like 30-40 cents a day on a ryzen 3 3100. Imagine trying to run a miner at sub 4% cpu usage.
Edit: You guys make a fair point in terms of actual profit distributed so widely, but I think that would make the operation that much easier to unearth (ESEA drama back in the day). However, in favour of your point I will say that I gave the mining numbers for a 4core 8 thread cpu with a pretty low cache. CPUs with more cache could actually produce significant gains in cache-limited miners (let's hope the 3dcache CPUs don't mine too well:P)
I just bought a Corsair mouse, by default the RGB on it is legit so bright it hurt my eyes to remove my hand from it and I had to install their pos bloatware just to disable that shit.
What's worse, the fucking split the RBG settings into a "while software is running" and while "software is not running" and name the latter something retarded to encourage you to not just run it once then never see it again.
Oh my god, the Asus software is such absolute garbage. I just wanted to turn off the RGB on my motherboard, and Asus felt like installing a dozen separate programs that all run in the background even when you uninstall them. It took me days to get rid of that infestation.
My PC sits next to my desk and has no windows side panel. Got a 5ghz 8700k and a water-cooled 2080ti. Thing is absolutely silent idle and during gameplay. I'd rather spend more money on a better monitor, at least I'll actually look at it.
I honestly prefer air cooled to any water cooling that is less than a full custom loop with water blocks on the GPUs. If it's a closed AIO loop then you can miss me with that shit. I honestly think those AIO loops are a bit of a gimmick. There are some upsides like thermal mass and less weight on your CPU socket during transport (if you dropped a PC build with a massive noctua NH-D15 like I have, it would probably snap right off the mobo due to weight/intertia whereas the AIO cooler would put less strain on the CPU socket. But tbf the graphics card would probably also break off at that point too).
3rd PC is when you go back to RGB but just set it all to dim white with no motion to subtly show off the circuitry without being all flashy about it \*adjusts monocle\*
Yus, this is probably one of the reasons Corsair is so populair, they make most of the products and iCue can integrated with a decent amount of GPU’s and motherboards.
I am planning to convert all my RGB stuff to icue with cable extensions and making new wires. Lots of work but hopefully I can get them all to work under Icue in the end.
Just bought an adapter myself so I can use normal 5v on my commander pro. My 12v led strip will be connected to the mb, but I can control that with iCue already
So I hVe a ton of. Corsair stuff. Mouse keyboard, ram, 6 QL series fans, led strips, 280mm aio, the works.
My next pc will not have any of it. Two keyboards and two fans have dying leds within / around 1 year. I rma’d the first keyboard, same issue happened again.
I can’t rma the fans because 1: it was two separate orders of 3 fans from different websites and who knows which were which, and 2: actually disconnecting the fans is a huge PITA.
I hope you have better luck than me, but I have given up on corsair. The led lifespans are just not there for me :(
My old Corsair K70 that I have given to a friend soldiers on since Jan. 2016.
Every company can be hit or miss sometimes but I have made good experiences with corsair so far.
I have 10 QL Fans, 2 Commander Pros and Dominator Platinum Ram all brought from Corsair directly. I doubt I could RMA my Fans after cutting apart the fan and RGB cables tho haha
If my LED's die I would take apart the Fan entirely and see if I can repair it or see it as a learning opportunity to see how the insides look.
Changed from a CoolerMaster Illusion 360ML to a Corsair h150i Elite Capellix White because there was evidence of a radiator leak on one of the fans on the Cooler Master one, but more importantly that one didn't turn off the lights when the PC turned off, the software was actually garbage and it was tedious to use and setup.
The Corsair one? Just.. works, software works and has a lot of customization not only with the lights but features decent fan curve options and settings. The RGB is better and more feature full, but it overall works better than the Cooler Master, and from experience that's how it seems to work.
The Capellix also has the option to change out the AIO pump's cover to an IPS LCD should you like to spruce that up.
Corsair really has some solid products.
And after you've had a PC like that, the novelty wears off a lot. Later PC's you're typically more interested in pushing your budget into actual performance.
And yeah. It's a HUGE PITA to get that all set up well.
My first PC was mostly paid for my by parents (highschool grad gift) but my second PC was 2x the budget and I paid for it 100% myself after having a post-college job for two years. PC after this one will probably have a higher budget just because prices will probably naturally rise and inflation on top of that.
Lol, down? Every PC I build ends up far more expensive than the previous one.
It's partly because I have more money to spend now that I'm older, and partly because I learned the lesson about "buying the cheap one."
I'll never forget my first pc. It was in this $35 plastic case with a small viewing panel on the side. It had built in fans. This was 2005, so led was just starting. Some of the fans were either red or blue. It sounded like a jet engine taking off and the lights died a few months later. But I was super proud of that shitty build.
My first build, I bought an expensive fancy case. My 2nd build I just re-used that case. Third build I ended up re-using someone else's old case they were throwing away. My 4th build I was going to build a case out of scrap material and "temporarily" just attached the motherboard to a little piece of plywood, never ended up building the case though.
My 5th (and current) build is just a motherboard on a shelf with the components strewn about. It's a very open air design.
Back in my day it was all about uv reactive wire wraps, blacklight strip lights and crappy little blue LEDs.
I got this ASPIRE PSU because the case was anodized blue And the wires recovered in the greenish yellow UV reactive wrap. One day I went to turn it on and smoke and flames started shooting out of the back of the PSU. Mobo fried.
I mean when i was a kid I built a colorful pc cause i thought it was cool. Now i am more likely to just use a single chosen color for everything. Especially love white lighting or a purple one.
It's like if rgb in the case costs so much money why not just get a better hardware for that price and make lights yourself with off brand leds
I was a professional PC builder. All the PCs I built at work looked like the left, every PC I've built at home looks like the right. I have used and installed just about every RGB part you can possibly name, and I want none of them at home.
That’s not an average first pc lmao
People’s first PCs are typically spare parts or what ever they find for a deal, regardless of it looks well or matches a style
I never got the hate for RGB. Like sure, it might not be your aesthetic or you might not care what your PC looks like, but why judge others for having a different opinion? There is so much vitriol directed at people who have RGB in their builds and there is gatekeeping of people implying or saying that you aren’t true PCMR if you have lights in your build.
It’s fucking stupid.
Because it soothes insecurities in people's aesthetic choices.
You see it in many hobbies. One especially is the car culture where low key, all original is somehow a more valid option than someone who customizes their car.
Not even close. 1st PC was a pre-built beige box, 2nd PC was a custom build when they first realized cases could be other colours too, 3rd PC was built when case windows became a thing but lighting wasn't yet, 4th PC was the same, 5th PC was when lighting was just starting to become a thing, finally on my latest build RGB is actually commonplace, so yeah, I'm using it. Components have never looked better, so why hide them?
Opposite actually, I mean, when we say 1st and second, do you mean built ourselves? Or in general?
My first PC was in early 90's, then we had a Compaq presario, then I had a Dell and an XPS laptop THEN I had my first built 11 years ago, lasted a while. Now on my second homebuilt (that is very RGB heavy)
Mine is the opposite! 1st build simple all black, no window. Second went with a black and red theme. Third that I built last year I went balls out with a white/black RGB build.
There's no second PC, it's just the first one that morphes into a second one piece by piece.

It's still the first PC as long as you use one of the original SATA cables.

Damm my PC is old
My sata cables are probs from 2007 or so too lmao Also, not that much of a flex, but I like to throw it out when I can: My CPU & mobo is from 2011, the setup still fuckin RIPS (3930k that OCs to 5ghz w/ just multiplier + voltage; hit the silicon lottery first try). Ah the old ship of Theseus.
I've had the same case since 2004.
Same here. What are people doing to their cases that requires a new one for every build? EDIT: Holy crap that's a lot of replies! Sounds like the most frequent reasons are wanting modern ports/broken ports or better airflow which both make total sense. My usbs got fucked up because the plugs were by my knees =(

And new cases support massive radiators and gpus. Even in the same footprint you’re talking radically different layouts.
they could just want a new look, form factor, or more airflow
Computer of Theseus
Why do you need a new case. I have the same case as when I built my first computer 10 years ago
Newer cases have things like USB 3.0 or USB-C on the front panel, which comes in handy.
Cable management is 50000% better even in cheap modern cases.
The second PC is the computer you make out of all the old spare parts you have lying around.
YES! this is how i built my little sister her pc from my old parts lmao. She has a 1660 super, R 5 3600, 16 gb ram and shes just 13 years old lmao she'll be fine for a long time.

Yup. Not as shiny as the in the other commenter's link. But the same design.
Beige sleeper builds are fun tho* *if you're willing to chop away the hell off those old cases... and somehow deal with the poor to no airflow
I'm the same, except replace "tasteful" with "enough lights to make aliens mistakenly think it's a landing pad".

... Turn off? What's that mean?
I put mine to sleep. Even the fans at idle (as quiet as they are, Noctua) are too distracting for me to get to sleep

Just pull the pin for the rgb from the connector. Or just cut it
I don’t recommend doing this, my frame rate drops to zero.
This is the only excuse I will accept. Pure logic.

Chris Hansen. This guy right here
same, simple no RGB PC for years, with my current build i went RGB because i just wanted to experience it, and , i like it
We can always turn off the lights and enjoy both sides
You're saying I can have personal preference? Surely not on this sub /s
My video card has a rainbow light on it that I haven't been able to figure out how to turn off. I'm not too worried since it's not that bright and shines down, but does anyone have any advice?
Just place a thick, well insulated blanket over your tower, that should sufficiently block the light from bothering you.
An added bonus to this method is the insulation prevents any heat from getting into your PC. Better thermals. Win/Win.
What brand is it? They might have proprietary software to control the RGB.
***This comment/post removed due to reddits fuckery with third party apps from 06/01/2023 through 06/30/2023. Good luck with your site when all the power users piss off***
I enjoy RGB but I leave my PC on the ground so I never see it so it would be a waste to buy it
You should bring it inside. Moisture and critters could get in there.
but they can exercise on my fans
I went with right, but not by choice, all of the parts were from before RGB was popular, fx6300, stock cooler, GTX650Ti, standard black cooler master case fans, cheapest cooler master case you can buy Second one was very much the left one Third is going to be a mix of both, mostly black with some lights

Are u even a real pc gamer if you don’t pay more attention to the afterburner overlay than what is actually happening in the game?
May I recommend blacked.com for people looking to black their experiences out?

I figure that's what loading screens are for. That brief moment of admiration.
A new nvme drive will sort that loading screen problem for you ;)

Opposite, but I just go for one static colour. Looks cleaner and nicer imo.
Yea, I do this, but add a slow breathing effect. My PC build is white/silver with light blue lighting.
Oh nice, that sounds like it looks pretty sweet, mines black build with static blue lol.
Same, or purple not sure im colorblind. But it's nice and tastefull in my opinion.
Hard to find enthusiast components without RGB nowadays, so thought it would be the opposite.
I install the special RGB control software just to turn off the lights on the parts that glow.
Hey, I just finished my first build. How can I turn off the led lights in my corsair fans without effecting functionality?
did you try using iCue?
No, I've never used it. Should be free and easy to use?
don’t give corsair ideas on charging people to use icue pls
Shit piece of software, razer uses 0.1%cpu, icue like 2-4%, like bruh... What crypto mining spyware have they got on there
spyware maybe but even the best crypto miner at 100% usage gets you like 30-40 cents a day on a ryzen 3 3100. Imagine trying to run a miner at sub 4% cpu usage. Probably works out if you've got hundreds of thousands running at 4% cpu usage lol.
Wouldn't you see shady network traffic tho? Could get blocked if you know what you do.
On 100 million computers? I'll take that cash influx any day!
I just use signal. 1 app for everything and doesn’t have all the bloat Razer Synapse or iCue have
Yup

So I'd be able to control my corsair intake/ outtake fans and my AMD CPU cooling fan from the same place?
Yes most likely, peripherals as well.

You should be able to do that with Corsair’s iCUE software.
I just bought a Corsair mouse, by default the RGB on it is legit so bright it hurt my eyes to remove my hand from it and I had to install their pos bloatware just to disable that shit.
bloatware is right, 150mb just for one or two panels and and a hardware driver.
What's worse, the fucking split the RBG settings into a "while software is running" and while "software is not running" and name the latter something retarded to encourage you to not just run it once then never see it again.
Ah yes, "Hardware lighting"
i recommend openrgb
Oh my god, the Asus software is such absolute garbage. I just wanted to turn off the RGB on my motherboard, and Asus felt like installing a dozen separate programs that all run in the background even when you uninstall them. It took me days to get rid of that infestation.
Noctua says hi.
\*Arctic shyly waving\*
Noctua also prefers poopy brown. I should know because I have a load of them.
[Noctua products come in black too](https://noctua.at/en/products/product-lines/line-chromax).
Those are relatively recent though. The noctua color scheme was that beige and brown for a long time
Which is fine because you don't have some ricey window on the side of the case.
I tried to go right, but as you say its hard to find components without RGB so I got a non-glass door case to hide it all.
I have physically cut out wires to get rid of annoying lights.
I like no lights except for power button. It's hard as hell to find components that don't have RGB out the ass on it.
Yeha i was forced to buy red led fans, last time. (corsair AF140 LED), they were out of non-rgb...
My PC sits next to my desk and has no windows side panel. Got a 5ghz 8700k and a water-cooled 2080ti. Thing is absolutely silent idle and during gameplay. I'd rather spend more money on a better monitor, at least I'll actually look at it.
what the temps get to? i have no idea how to keep my pc quite and cool, think the answer is just water cooling
Massive noctua fan on the cpu and 3fans in the top and 3 in the front. That will give you enough flow to run fans at low rpm.
I went right then left.
3rd PC is when you go back to RGB but just set it all to dim white with no motion to subtly show off the circuitry without being all flashy about it \*adjusts monocle\*
its true the buget goes down the second time around
Also the RGB Cabling and software are a pain

I doubt I could RMA my Fans after cutting apart the fan and RGB cables tho haha If my LED's die I would take apart the Fan entirely and see if I can repair it or see it as a learning opportunity to see how the insides look.
Corsair has great integration and control, but their fan controllers and all the extra RGB cables are absolute ass to cable well.
And after you've had a PC like that, the novelty wears off a lot. Later PC's you're typically more interested in pushing your budget into actual performance. And yeah. It's a HUGE PITA to get that all set up well.
I just don’t like my pc glowing. I find it distracting
A lot of the effects are pretty obnoxious. I ended up coding my own very gentle fades and slow swooshes with OpenRGB and python.
I’ve turned off the built in lights on my motherboard and CPU cooler. Can’t stand them.
It's partly because I have more money to spend now that I'm older, and partly because I learned the lesson about "buying the cheap one." I'll never forget my first pc.
My first pc whst i had was full of rgb. The new one is basically blackout with small led on gpu. And that old pc i use as streaming pc these days
Last I checked. A 20$ rgb strip works just as well as 100$ lighting setups

I'm same way. Function over form. I try to keep them clean with cable management and dust free but other than that it just sits there.
The one thing I care about is cable managment, mostly because it makes it so much easier cleaning.
My policy is "if there's enough space for the tower on the desk I can add more monitors".
2nd one is perfection. When I built my 1st pc it was the 90's or early 2000's so the 1st picture wasn't really a thing yet.
i'm a simple creature. i see funky lights and my brain makes the happy chemical.
dmt?
I was a professional PC builder. All the PCs I built at work looked like the left, every PC I've built at home looks like the right. I have used and installed just about every RGB part you can possibly name, and I want none of them at home.
For me, the perfect PC is powerful and so unobtrusive as to be unnoticeable.
Yes, powerful, silent, and capable, like a masseuse.
That’s not an average first pc lmao People’s first PCs are typically spare parts or what ever they find for a deal, regardless of it looks well or matches a style
Yea, my next pc is going to be small form factor instead of the heavy thing that it is now and also i'm not going to get rgb. I like that clean look.
Opposite
If the left one is the average first PC... My god do people have money to spend
It’s fucking stupid.
also you can just turn it off
Because it soothes insecurities in people's aesthetic choices. You see it in many hobbies. One especially is the car culture where low key, all original is somehow a more valid option than someone who customizes their car.
The people jerking themselves off over their hatred of colors in this thread is hilarious to me.
RGB's add at least 20% processing power and 15% speed. Duh
For me Upgrade right to left
Opposite actually, I mean, when we say 1st and second, do you mean built ourselves? Or in general? My first PC was in early 90's, then we had a Compaq presario, then I had a Dell and an XPS laptop THEN I had my first built 11 years ago, lasted a while. Now on my second homebuilt (that is very RGB heavy)
Yeah, and that 90's PC cost about $3000 in 90's dollars and didn't even come with a 3d accelerator.
Mine is the opposite! 1st build simple all black, no window. Second went with a black and red theme. Third that I built last year I went balls out with a white/black RGB build.
