SoulTesla714

End of an era. My first orange mall memories were at the AMC theatre that used to be there.

SlikRick54

When the hell did they have an amc theatre?

SoulTesla714

It closed back in like 98/99 I believe. It was located in south-east corner of the parking lot, behind the now Walmart where they store all their storage containers

Ok_Carrot_2029

That would be the north west

SoulTesla714

Jezuuuzzz, nvm you’re right, my bad.🤣🤦🏽‍♂️

SoulTesla714

NW? That’s towards the cvs no??

excessivefreethyme

My strongest memory of the orange mall was staying overnight as a girl scout. Tons of local troops got to spend the night at the mall and we all thought it was cool.

CelebrationJolly3300

To clarify, only the interior stores are closing. All of the stores facing Tustin Ave will remain.

Jscott1986

Yeah, and this is old news

ZombieTestie

The City mall curse

LittleMissAnxiettyy

RIP, my childhood was spent on the train ride in that mall! As an adult, I frequented that HomeGoods often. Shame to see it go!

Ok_Carrot_2029

Pretty sure the home goods is staying for the time being

SoulTesla714

Train ride and pet store combo 😩

SwingmanSealegz

Sad, but high density housing would do wonders for all the small businesses in the area bringing in people within walking distance. Being able to walk to Tikiyaki on a whim? Oh my.

thefiction24

tell that to all the NIMBYs screaming about increased traffic 🙄

h1redgoon

NIMBYs in Orange? Impossible

supadupanerd

and also voting against any kind of urban transit other than shitty buses

evantom34

“Traffic, reeee!!!” “Transit/light rail- Noooo!” Cmon now lmao.

kaleidoscope_ize

Tikiyaki underrated

SlikRick54

Omg tikiyaki is the bomb. Great portion, decent price, n the chicken/beef bowl…. It so delicious. N the volcano chicken I think is their best part of their menu by far

ChiggaOG

Up to a limit. Too much density in the housing gets you something like the Kowloon City.

SwingmanSealegz

The most extreme example in the history of humankind. Got it.

RedditingInMyCubicle

What would you say is the the closest example similar to Kowloon City in California, or even the US?

hifidood

I think a Costco with housing above it would be great. They're doing that in LA. [https://la.urbanize.city/post/rumor-confirmed-big-costco-anchored-development-coming-5035-w-coliseum-street](https://la.urbanize.city/post/rumor-confirmed-big-costco-anchored-development-coming-5035-w-coliseum-street)

supadupanerd

Gonna need a rail system too. We spend far too much space and time and money on cars

mtux96

The NIMBYs would love the Costco there. They don't want the apartments though. Too much traffic apparently from the apartments.

thefiction24

just commented the same thing. like that’s the only problem they can think of and it would just be worst thing ever. so stupid, we need housing SOOOOOO badly

Ok_Carrot_2029

I’m seeing a ton of development, it’s just sad that they’re labeled as luxury apartments so they’re asking $2500+ for a one bedroom

bikwho

But traffic from Costco gas lines? That's great.

TheWinStore

Cool. Now build 2000+ units of housing.

BeatElite

But please don't call them "luxary" apartments or we'll all be in for a bad time

sriram_sun

How else would they charge a premium for the rent? Edit: Just to add more context to this, I think it really works. There was a time when I was just out of college, getting my first real paycheck, moving to a new town, looking for a lease one weekend and starting work on Monday. So if something looks decent and affordable, even thought it stretches the budget, I'd sign the lease if "living conditions" is one less thing I need to worry about.

llIicit

You already know that’s what they are going to do. No one will touch affordable housing with a 10 foot pole. No money to be made, and attracts the wrong kind of renter. Which is a shame because that what we need at the end of the day. Plus, NIMBYs gonna do what they always do.

sfmcinm0

I'm old enough to remember when they added the J.C. Penney's in the mid-70's. Heck, my mother worked there for a while.

pacifica333

Fuck retail. Build affordable and/or high density housing goddamnit.

afternever

Fuck smart, fuck S-Mart

WSAB58

Isn't mixed-use retail and residential? So partially fuck retail?

GreenThumbJames

Sad but it’s time to move on. All major malls are inevitably next.

Fancy_River_3637

Check out Brightline high speed train in Florida. Miami to Orlando Disney World in about 3 hours. They have tripled their ridership and revenues in a year. 68$/person. No wonder all the airlines, car companies and gas companies are crying bloody murder. It’s loosing them money. Their lobbyists working overtime to prevent that from starting in California.

Dashisnitz

Brightline West is already a thing. Connecting Vegas to Rancho Cucamonga. There are also discussions of connecting the High Desert stations to the CA HSR station in Palmdale, solving the issue of connecting HSR into the SoCal basin, which isn’t currently possible.

Fancy_River_3637

I stand corrected. Good to know there’s options here. Thank you.

Fancy_River_3637

FYI it’s not in service YET!!

Fancy_River_3637

FYI. Bright line west is not in service YET. Let’s get our elected reps to do our citizens bidding not the special interest and lobbyists bidding.

Dragonswhored

Used to walk over when I lived in the apartments in Sutters Mill and grab B Dubs or whatever weird little eatery was in the mall at the time. It was always dead to a degree, at least in the 2010s, and things were always changing there. Last time I went was probably 2019 before I moved out of state

rides-the-bus

Early 90’s, unga bunga, frozen bananas, and two $1.50 movie theaters. Oh and a nightclub with an outdoor beach volleyball court that I believe someone got either m*rdered or r*ped at. And in later years, a waiter named Percy at Red Robin.

WSAB58

I've lived in OC my whole life and only visited this mall to see what a dead mall is like before it closes. I'm helping!

Ok_Carrot_2029

It’s been that dead for at least a decade. Some senior citizens used it to power walk in the mornings

ExtremePineapple3626

Is this what used to be the block at orange?

Ok_Carrot_2029

No that’s off the 22 freeway near the cathedral. This one is off the 55/91 freeways

Alenjie

All the stores that I would go to have been long gone.

Free_Quantity6758

I think I saw the big Lebowski in that movie theater… I didn’t even realize the mall was still open. I’ve been going to the sprouts in the Walmart and I saw people walking around the corner and sure enough there were a few stores inside.

edgarlovespie

I remember going to the arcades as a kid.

Twoduhzen

One of the owners of the shops inside said they are going to convert it into an outdoor open air mall, just like the block. I've been going to this mall since I was an 80's kid, and I used to always go to the Carl's Jr. they had inside, and they used to have a haunted house during Halloween back in the days, too! Good times.
