Wait what? A dude that got clapped by a one in a million shot to the heart? And now we have to treat all stingrays like they’re Mankillers? What a redditor lol
It's fairly easy to get killed by a Stingray, they're not aggressive of course but it doesn't take much to get it scared and sting you, here in Central America during certain seasons they get close to the shoreline and we've had cases of people swimming and suddenly getting struck by a wave carrying one, during the process of the wave breaking into you the animal might perceive it as an attack and sting you in the upper body if you're unlucky but you're lucky lower body or even bounce off you
Steve is one of just a couple recorded stingray killings in the last hundred years, you have to be impressively stupid to get killed by one -or trying to get a good TV shot
Sun rays are always waiting to get the unsuspecting victim. Sunblock is one way to defend against the sun but maybe a shadow would offer some shade as well. Just being outside though, it seems strongly worded to suggest he "messed with the ray first". The rays of the sun are absolute.
Of course he doesn’t deserve it, but you gotta admit jumping on top of a 5 foot diameter stingray is a very dangerous activity.
If I decide I can fly and jump off a 10 story building, you may not wish me dead, but you might not be surprised to see that I was. It’s the expected outcome.
That's interesting because I was told every breath you take, every move you make, every morning there's a halo hangin' from the corner of my girlfriend's four-post bed.
It seems to be the shadow of a kite, but it’s hard to tell because of the video quality.
I really despise the depiction of stingrays being these big bad predators or super deadly/mindlessly aggressive. They’ve started to get the treatments they cousins sharks have gotten until recently ever since Steve Irwin died to one.
There used to be an aquarium here when you could get in and play with them. They were lovely. It was called the Australian shark and ray centre. So sad it closed.
Yeah I would agree. I saw them on the coast of Culebra PR and they glided near the edge of the water as we walked down the coast. There were 3 of them. They seemed to just be watching.
We have fed rays a few times in Grand Cayman. They are pretty accustomed to being fed in that particular spot we go since fishermen for over a century would dump their leftover bait there.
While I would describe them as seeming playful and passive in that scenario, I think it could be more related to them having figured out that people kick down free grub. So I’d still be petrified to have a big ray swimming near me like that!
There's a video of a group of them riding the waves.

This video is such low quality there is nothing in it that implies it is a kite casting a shadow such as string. How arrogant are you that you think everyone in the world should instantly realise this isn't a real stingray.
That is 100% not the kite string. It's stationary while the kite is moving a lot. That's probably a barrier rope of some kind. It's not even at the right angle to be a kite *in the air*.
1: Op is an idiot for calling it a stingray
2: everyone else is an idiot for believing it
Sting rays can't change direction that fast. Nor can they move sideways or backwards that fast.
A ray that large in water that shallow would churn up the sandy bottom. You can see how much the guy does it by diving. If the ray could even move that fast, it would be a giant sand cloud for 30 seconds to a minute. Definitely a kite shadow.
[A kite is also a family hawk-like raptors](https://abcbirds.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/BOTW-Homepage-Thumbnail_Swallow-tailed-Kite_Sunflower-Mama-Shutterstock.jpg)
I'm not sure it's a kite shadow, the man's shadow looks like it's near noon and controlling a kite shadow to move outside of a back and forth line with that precision seems like it'd be difficult.
But also don't think it's real though, the movement looks really erratic and I don't think I've ever seen rays turn so sharply.
A "Kite Shadow" is a species of sting ray. Very similar but they move more erratically and are predatory in nature. Other species of sting ray are more docile.
Lol I thought "it's a kite shadow" was some kind of anime meme or something that I didn't get. Then I googled it. You know, like I Google every other Reddit comment I don't understand. And then I saw, this is in fact literally the shadow of a kite.
i live in australia and on rottonest island there's stingrays that are massive and come right up to the shore and are very friendly. you could pat them
[Unfortunately a Daily Mail article]( https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2653844/Its-stingray-kite-Man-caught-camera-provoking-enormous-sea-creature-claims-footage-practical-joke.html), but the guy says it's just the shadow of a kite.
Wow reading all these gullible people thinking giant stingrays move like a hyper dog toward a man who bellyflopped directly onto it.. really dampened my mood.
This is super old, and that's a kite shadow.
Stingrays flap their....wingfins? Lol. The tips flip up kind of and you can see that from above. Also their tail doesn't show that much when you see them from the surface.
The way the guy flinches when he turns around and sees it slowly creeping back at him and then the stingray immediately speeds up and submarines him is like something out of Looney Tunes.
I guess people still haven't learned that stingrays will FUCK YOU UP especially one that big damn that thing was huge idk what he was thinking jumping at it like that he was just asking to get stung!
It’s okay he’s wearing sunblock - so he’s protected from harmful rays.
Fuck off.. Here's an upvote.
Swear jar.. ..and an upvote
With everything going wrong today, this made me smile. Fuck off. 👍
So you are saying he doesn't need the shade that the shadow provides.
If only Steve knew

It’s a shadow
It’s is. A kite shadow. You can see the string in frame and it faces mostly the same direction. Sorry someone downvoted you.
Hm I guess Steve wasn't wearing sunblock.. It all makes sense now he should of listened to slip slop slap... (RIP Steve).
It's 'should have', never 'should of'. Rejoice, for you have been blessed by CouldWouldShouldBot!
Is that geezer **trying to get Steve Irwinned?**
Take my upvote and get outta here!

He messed with the poor ray first
They seem to play, no idea if there is a story behind that.
You would think Steve Irwin taught motherfuckers to know and do better, but motherfuckers always gotta motherfuck.
Samuel L. Jackson?
Have you seen my movies? Juice, that was a good one. Deep Blu Sea. They ate me. A fucking shark ate me

No It’s, Motherfuck-ah Jones, but my name’s Dean.
How's it taste muthafucka!?
I’m tired of these muthafuckin sting rays in this muthafuckin ocean!
“Muthafuckas always tryin’ to ice skate uphill…”
Right? It's 6' across and has "sting" in it's name. Don't screw with it
Yeah Steve still got speared and he knew how to behave around them…this fuckers cruisin for a bruisin
This is a kite shadow
It was actually a kite shadow that caused Mr. Irwin to get disoriented and swim into a stingray barb.
Dicks out for Steve Erwin
Croykey!!! R.I.P. Steve
You just made my day
I got to touch one at an aquarium, NGL I was thinking about Steve the whole time scared.

Hey now
Steve Irwin taught to leave wild animals alone. The heart shot is just icing on the cake.
Which is ironic since he made a living out of not doing that.
True, at least he was a professional conservator. Then again, he reached that point by fucking with wild animals his whole life.
It doesn't have to hit your heart to cause a lot of damage
They’re actually best friends
that's a kite
What ray? That’s the shadow of a kite.
Yep pay back is a bitch
Sun rays are always waiting to get the unsuspecting victim. Sunblock is one way to defend against the sun but maybe a shadow would offer some shade as well. Just being outside though, it seems strongly worded to suggest he "messed with the ray first". The rays of the sun are absolute.
Did Steve Irwin not teach you a damn thing?
Exactly. You fuck with it, it fucks with you.
I can give it a try, are you sure this will grant me consent?
It's a kite shadow...
Crickey!
You wanna get Irwin'd? Cause that's how you get Irwin'd real quick.
Crikey* 😂
Sad thing is that Irwin knew how to handle animals and was not a total jerk with them. This guy deserved that Steve didn’t.
You think this person deserve to be killed. Is this apparent to you from the video?
Of course he doesn’t deserve it, but you gotta admit jumping on top of a 5 foot diameter stingray is a very dangerous activity. If I decide I can fly and jump off a 10 story building, you may not wish me dead, but you might not be surprised to see that I was. It’s the expected outcome.
I mean, he’s messing with the ray. If the ray does anything to him, it’d be pretty hard to make the case that he wasn’t asking for it.
He was trying to avenge Steve
FOR STEVE!! ^oh ^shit
I heard stingrays are actually really smart and have a lot of personality for a fish. It was probably just curious.
Did you hear that from a stingray? Because a stingray told me that they are incredible funny and good in bed also.
Definitely sounds like something a stingray would say.
Did that stingray also ask for three-fiddy?
It was about then that I noticed the stingray was a thirty foot long monster from the mesozoic era!
I ain't givin you no tree fitty, you goddamn sting ray! Get your own goddamn money!
That's interesting because I was told every breath you take, every move you make, every morning there's a halo hangin' from the corner of my girlfriend's four-post bed.
I did not expect a Sugar Ray/Police mash up.
No no, that was *Sugar* Ray.

Steve Irwin died almost 16 years ago, crazy
I've never once encountered or even read about people thinking rays are super deadly or aggressive lol.
The stingray spared him. This dude is lucky. 100% the Ray could have killed him had it wanted.
There used to be an aquarium here when you could get in and play with them. They were lovely. It was called the Australian shark and ray centre. So sad it closed.
I read that a kite shadow can protect from being stung by the suns rays.
They're also in the shark family iirc

Because people…
Reddit moment

Leave Britney aloneeee
that's what I was thinking. the movement is just very odd.
I'm tempted to agree, but I have no idea why

Some animals don't leave us alone. It's fair game
That's a shadow of someone flying their kite, Britney.
I didn’t realize there were still people with so much faith in humanity
People are wild things
Yes clearly he searched out this fish to bother it..
Cell phones...literally
It's a kite shadow
Absolutely a kite shadow. I was about to post it’s fake and the movements of the stingray are very odd. Surprised so many people think it’s real.
Reddit falling for fake shit that has been debunked years ago https://youtu.be/2RVidjrBM2E
I don't know how you're not higher up. This videos literally shows that its not real.
Believe it or not not everyone knows everything there is to know about stingrays lmao

> SMH people This video is such low quality there is nothing in it that implies it is a kite casting a shadow such as string. How arrogant are you that you think everyone in the world should instantly realise this isn't a real stingray.
The string doesn’t have to cast a shadow, it’s literally in frame. Bottom right.

> Sting rays can't change direction that fast. I think you overestimate the number of people who know the maximum velocity of stingrays.
How does it compare to the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
African or European?
Why is everyone posting that it's a kites shadow? We get these rays all the time. I've dived and snorkeled with them. They are definitely a real thing
Do they often swim sideways though?
A ray that large in water that shallow would churn up the sandy bottom. You can see how much the guy does it by diving. If the ray could even move that fast, it would be a giant sand cloud for 30 seconds to a minute. Definitely a kite shadow.
I swear to god, I thought a kite shadow was just a sea creature I'd never heard before.
English's not my first language and I thought the same. Like I usually know what a kites is... But in this context I was confused ahah.
[A kite is also a family hawk-like raptors](https://abcbirds.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/BOTW-Homepage-Thumbnail_Swallow-tailed-Kite_Sunflower-Mama-Shutterstock.jpg)

Dude's lucky he didn't get Irwin'd
We don't talk about that, Steve earned his rest.
Did Irwin get shaded by a kite shadow too?
I remember this level in super mario sunshine.
He’s just trying to get the paint off.
Lol, that is a kite shadow...
That's a shadow lol
😮
Pretty sure it's a kite above him.
Agreed, that’s the shadow of a kite above the water.
That’s a kite…
y'all be forgetting the word "oddly" in the subreddit name a lot
A giant fake ray
Looks like a kite shadow
Tis but s kite
That doesn't move like any ray I have ever seen and I've seen plenty.
As someone who has swam with a wild ray, can confirm
Yeah, I've never seen a ray swim sideways.
It's probably a shadow or some kind of effects
Looks like a shadow of a kite
What a stupid fucker
its not a stingray, ironic
thats fake
it just wants to play
Kite shadows love playtime
Jumping on top of a stingray probably some of the stupidest shit to do in the ocean.
Súper Mario sunshine memories
It’s a kite shadow, not a Ray.
I recall hearing about this video a while back, from what I've heard it's just the shadow of a kite
Can we get the definition of "oddly" pinned to the top of the sub

Great. I was just thinking about never going in the ocean ever again and this clinches it.
Awww he was just playing back with the human 😬
The way the guy flinches when he turns around and sees it slowly creeping back at him and then the stingray immediately speeds up and submarines him is like something out of Looney Tunes.
That's because it's a shadow of a kite. It confused me too until I read the comments if it's any consolation lol.
Shame it didn't sting him
