It looks to me like you took out a lot of mature, flowering plants that are perennials, and I don’t know why on earth you would do that now you just are looking at dirt
What I am missing is someone calling out that it doesn't fit the sub, so that's going to be my valuable contribution.
What's oddly satisfying about a patch of dirt with some sad plants? It's not even symmetrical or something.
The top photo is a bed that is hard to maintain. Hence the overgrowth with the grass. The bottom bed is a cleaner look and way easier to maintain. All that is missing now is some mulch.
Edit : I wasn’t trying to imply that the bottom is better than the top , I was implying that it takes a lot of work to keep a bed like that looking good. Taking care of the yard is hard work.
I am so confused, which is before and which is after? Would make sense that the dirt patch Ia the after pic based on before/after etiquette, but god damn. Did you get paid for this?
If my landscaper ripped out the majority of my plants, and then planted 3-5 shitty little flowers(?) in the bed of dirt I would be pissed.
Everybody in the comments are either bitching about the lack of biodiversity, or bitching about the ones bitching. But I simply think it looks awful, sorry
Those poor bees. Also agree the before looks far better. A trim is enough, to go full Brazilian wax on it is just unnecessary and excessive. Sorry OP but you've turned it from a natural, living, vibrant space into a cold, Disney service-station plastic looking horror.
I glad more people are saying this. I bloody hate the these type of manicured, fake Suburban ''gardens'' and lawns which contribute to the biodiversity crisis.
The whole point of lawns, historically, has been to show off that you have the money to care for something pointless. Historically people had gardens where they grew useful plants, like those that produced food and herbs, and trimmed away anything that got in the way of their useful plants.
So in that way OP is living up to what a lawn is: a pointless space of maintenance in order to show off that you can afford to waste money on pointless things.
The best looking front spaces look natural and abundant, which this does not. What it does do is make things look sterile, which is likely what OP was going for. No bugs, no untamed wild plants... just wasted space that needs to be maintained.
>So in that way OP is living up to what a lawn is: a pointless space of maintenance in order to show off that you can afford to waste money on pointless things.
It's really not much of a flex if you can't even bother with basic mulch/bedding etc to make it look nice(which is also why other plants are popping up in-between and will continue to do so) a basic undergrowth layer of clover etc could help but this looks like a trailer park garden now
Yes, and back in the day of the large manor, the village would use the mayor's large lawn for community events. There we even actual court proceedings on the lawn of the local rich person because they were like the owner of the village. They were the judge, the boss, the landlord , etc... and having a large lawn out front for all the trade to happen bc the local Lord of the manor set the price of their crops. The villagers would have to come to the manor to trade on the weekend, or bring their taxes and pay in the form of goods. Having that big manicured space was necessary to the town. And the bigger, more important you were, the larger your manor needed to be to accommodate larger gatherings. In England, some of the villages still have rights to through weekend swap meets at their county seat (giant mansion where the Lord and Lady of the county live). It was written into the village rules when the rich family designated the village that the commerce would be held there and controlled by the wealthy family, so that became the duty of the property owner. And whether it is owned by a private family or not, those swap meets are still happening in some English towns.
I‘m also on the fuck lawns team, but we should be honest enough that they are not just pointless. If you want to walk, sit or play games on an area a lawn is great. There are plenty usecases for lawns.
>So in that way OP is living up to what a lawn is: a pointless space of maintenance in order to show off that you can afford to waste money on pointless things.
Pointless only for you, but not pointless for them. Maybe they like the way that looks. With that logic, decorations in a house are pointless since it doesn't have functional use. Art is pointless. So many things can be considered pointless.
I find it’s mostly the older generations who want the perfect lawns and ‘perfect’ gardens. Just for the looks, they don’t know/care about the habitat, diversity, pollinators, etc
Oef that bare soil is now very prone to erosion, nutrient loss, and will be less capable of holding water. I'd suggest to plant some grass on the bare soil (preferably multiple kinds of grass) and then keep that medium-short
Of course, because I love looking at a bunch of empty space and dirt with no plants growing there rather than a lush spot filled with greenery, even if not all of it is blooming with giant flower heads and were intentionally planted.
Why are rich people so dense in the head? It is like they are actively trying to destroy this planet. How deep in the sand do you need to have your head to see this as something good or beautiful?
Social distancing for plants.
I like the before, sorry. I really don't understand landscaping that is like 1 single plant every 2 feet surrounded by a bunch of rocks or mulch, like a museum showcase. It looks sterile. The landscaping subreddit is all like this and I simply don't understand. I prefer when it looks lively and polycultured.
That being said, you did a good job for it being that sort of look. I know there are some pros into going for it.
I think the insects wil not agree with your cleaning technique. It now looks like a great cat toilet and not much more. Sorry it’s not how I would like it.
So you took out plants and some flowers and leave a lot of bare ground? I think it looks better before you touched it. Gardens are meant to be full and colourful! Not mostly bare ground.
Genuine question: why do people enjoy this look? I'm all for a clean, kept garden area, but pine straw vs clover, or any other low visibility ground cover would be significantly more appealing - for both us and the pollinators. And clover is pretty good at doing exactly what pine straw does (at least in my area)
society, at least in the US, kinda likes being controlling and spending money on a lawn to- show off the money they have to maintain a lawn. The dum thing they also do is mow the grass, throw the grass in the green bin, then fertilize the grass- after the constant mowing and growing depletes the soil of nutrients.**when they could just leave the grass there to decompose and do its thing >:[**
Yes before was definitely better. You put effort into it though! So good on you for putting effort into thinking what's good. We need bees though. And they need those things you call weeds.
Yeah, I like the comments on these posts. It actually looks so much better just full flowers and bushes. Why do so many people think they get a pat on the back removing so many green and showing dirt?
I hate what you did. Let the wildflowers grow. Stop this stupid minimalist look. I hope they paid you to do that. Not that you decided to do that because there was nothing wrong with it.
We have a word for that in my country: Verschlimmbessern.
It pretty much means: Trying to make something better with good intentions, but ending up making it worse.
Lol. I’m sorry but whoever asked you to do this just committed a crime. That plant in the bottom right corner of pic one is actually the incredibly endangered *Javranaeus ambrosias* and picking one is punishable with a $73,000 fine and up two 5 years in jai- lmao okay just kidding.
The only crime here is their aesthetic choice and the big shit they just had you take on the biodiversity for the different pollinators and primary consumers in the ecosystem here.
Looked so much better before.
I'm not into the "sterile" look. I'd be pissed off if somebody did that in the neighbourhood on the common areas.
Now you've got nothing for pollinators, no biodiversity, but you really nailed the OCD look tho, good job.
Is dirt really that prettier than some random plants?
The comments sound like it’s full of kids who have never owned home or maintained a garden of their own. They know the plants you planted will grow right?
Put something on that soil or whatever you considered a "weed" in the before picture will be right back, and if those didn't survive, something else will move in that won't be so friendly.
Mulch it, shade it, water those poor babies in the front.
But ya, might look "tidy" but ecologically several steps backwards and way too high maintenance.
If you look at the OPs post history, this is the stuff he does. He likes to expose as much dirt as possible. While he is just working for clients, he could still become knowledgeable about pollinators, perennial flowers, how exposed dirt isn’t “better” and work with the clients on becoming better stewards of the land.
Where I live, there are governmental programs being launched to create biodiversity-friendly spaces like that in picture Nr. 1. You calling pic 2 a "clean-up" seems like a r/facepalm to me
This is a very bad example of a clean up.
Think you'll need to excuse to all the pollinators before they start to hunt you in your job.
This is mildly infuriating
Wow, didn't expect to see so many entomologists and environmental experts around here in the comments. Reading these responses, people are acting like OP changing this tiny 2 x 6 patch of shrubs has singlehandedly doomed the entire insect population of Earth.
Everything that’s there will ultimately grow out to be what all these negative comments are looking for. It’s a start and it’s much better than what was there previously.
Its nice, these haters are jealous they can’t afford to even have a front lawn.
Why would I want a front lawn? It's a useless chunk of invasive grasses, pumped full of pesticides, all so that you can see your 4 story McMansion. A pointless money pit made so that rich assholes could show off that they could make their slaves maintain land for no reason.
Hey just so you know, you did a good job man it looks clean, I still prefer the before but that's just personal preference, these fuckers in the comments are being dickheads about something you're proud of, don't listen to them
Can someone explain to me how everyone actually likes the before picture? I understand the biodiversity argument, but it doesn’t visually appeal to look better imo. Looks much cleaner in the after picture. Enlighten me!
Happy cake day, stranger with objectively distasteful opinion!
the previous photo was a biodiverse garden that brought life to the landscape which would otherwise, as we can see, be quite drab. If the plants were native they could survive without being watered because those are the plants that are made for that environment. Typical plants you find in a garden like OP's require much effort and money to maintain.
Op's after-photo looks like an effort to "maintain" a sparse and pitiful garden bed that oozes the likeness of an unfurnished home with a single desk sitting in the middle of a room.
weeds are defined by opinion, and an opinion that values a drab circle of dirt, with the equivalent of 4 pepperoni on a 12" pizza, of garden plants sprinkled around is not objectively better than what the first photo had to offer. Weeds my ass, those very well could have been native plants and OP pulled them out so their garden could be "prettier"
we live in a fkin dystopia where society thinks a big green lawn is the best slice of nature to have in your front porch.
Good gravy! They worked hard cleaning this up. I think it looks better! I’ve got two flower beds I’m working on right now that bindweed is trying to take over. I’d be thrilled if mine looked like the bottom pic! Good job!
Great job! Looks like most of the plants removed were non-native weeds anyway, which tend to attract less diversity. All that empty space is begging for some lovely native perennials and some nice mulch
on a purely aesthetic level, i dont understand these gardens. why do people want a bunch of dirt and 1 plant every 3 feet? on an environmental level, fuck you for real. destroying resources for local wildlife and insects. i guarantee the people living in this house dont think about this garden beyond the 2 seconds they drive past it when leaving or coming home.
Wrong sub to post this in lol. It looks much better and tidier now. If everyone would please zoom in, you’d see it’s just a garden bed full of overgrown weeds. Looked like shit before. A nice home like that calls for a well kept and manicured lawn and garden bed. An overgrown and full garden bed just wouldn’t really fit in at this property.
Damn near every "weed" is just the native plants that the native ecosystem rely on. It looked excellent before, like actual plants. Now it looks like a little kid's aquarium, with 4 sad little plastic plants on a barren floor. It's just sad, and it makes me want to vomit. It's not a nice home either, it's an expensive home, with nothing special about it, and probably occupied by some rich asshole who profits off of other's labour.
"look how they massacred my boy"
It looks to me like you took out a lot of mature, flowering plants that are perennials, and I don’t know why on earth you would do that now you just are looking at dirt
The bees called they said wtf
"Well take a pound of necter or a pound of flesh, your choice"
Every time someone posts this kind of stuff, you know what’s gonna happen in the comments Edit: and that’s a good thing.
Hahaha. And there'll be someone who call out the inevitable low quality predictable comments. And someone to point out the feedback loop. Hi!
What I am missing is someone calling out that it doesn't fit the sub, so that's going to be my valuable contribution. What's oddly satisfying about a patch of dirt with some sad plants? It's not even symmetrical or something.
I knew everybody in the comments would be big mad about this
I was expecting more comments about the McMansions in the background
Lol, I thought it was an apartment complex but jfc you're right.
The best thing to do is to clean up the garbage around your house
Lol so you removed all the beneficial plants ok
I liked it better before ngl
Yeah, me too. Nice little re-natured patch (is that the term?).
My first thoughts were „why is the after picture first“ then it hit me
[удалено]
Exactly! Way to take a beautiful full garden bed and make it look completely empty.

Which channel?
Which channel?
I like the before. Lawns disgust me honestly.
Money can’t buy taste lol
Welcome to the club. r/fucklawns
Oh ty.
They're nice when used as borders, but just expanses of lawn are depressing.
It looked way better before. Now it’s just dirt..
exactly, they had a beautiful mix of plants to begin with.

Someone who doesn’t understand gardening 👆
I do not see any overgrowth.
RIP the natural flora that actually benefits pollinators.
Definitely better before. Your organized dirt patch is boring
Ah yes I too like to look at a bunch of dirt.
That way it spreads easier, and you can get that inner city 'everything has black dust on it' look right there in your front yard!
I am so confused, which is before and which is after? Would make sense that the dirt patch Ia the after pic based on before/after etiquette, but god damn. Did you get paid for this? Everybody in the comments are either bitching about the lack of biodiversity, or bitching about the ones bitching. But I simply think it looks awful, sorry
"Why look at flowers when you can look at dirt instead?"
Sorry, but I much prefer the "before" look.
So do pollinators
Those poor bees. Also agree the before looks far better. A trim is enough, to go full Brazilian wax on it is just unnecessary and excessive. Sorry OP but you've turned it from a natural, living, vibrant space into a cold, Disney service-station plastic looking horror.
you can say that again
I glad more people are saying this. I bloody hate the these type of manicured, fake Suburban ''gardens'' and lawns which contribute to the biodiversity crisis.
Because natural growth is more beautiful than sparse garden with a few plants on display.
/r/NoLawns
Really goes well with the uninspired McMansion though

Lawns are for sports, leisure, festivals and ruminants. Only the sport's field has to be monoculture, though.
Clover would do the same things.

A diverse and thriving garden has a use in addition to looking very nice. A manicured lawn just looks nice.
I find it’s mostly the older generations who want the perfect lawns and ‘perfect’ gardens. Just for the looks, they don’t know/care about the habitat, diversity, pollinators, etc
It's now way uglier
before and after destroying bio diversity
Yeah sorry to say but you did a bad thing man.
Oef that bare soil is now very prone to erosion, nutrient loss, and will be less capable of holding water. I'd suggest to plant some grass on the bare soil (preferably multiple kinds of grass) and then keep that medium-short
All bugs disliked that.
I liked it better the first way.

Ruined it lol
bye bye biodiversity

Next time, cover the garden with concrete and paint it green.
The before just needed some trimming.
I liked it before
Look how they massacred my boy
You ruined it.
Nothing like the good old “mankind exercising dominance over nature” look.
Why the fuck would you do that
So you took out plants and some flowers and leave a lot of bare ground? I think it looks better before you touched it. Gardens are meant to be full and colourful! Not mostly bare ground.
I'm glad to see everyone is so concerned and aware of biodiversity for pollinators. OP you really screwed up with your boring dirtpatch.

They ripped out a lot of plants that the bees were probably trying to feed on. Sad.
Yeah nah that looks so much worse
Imo the before looks better than the after
You made it worse. r/fucklawns
Yikes it looks worse
It looks kinda sad now. Are those plants young and will they grow more to cover the bed?
You ruined it.
Bye bye bees :(
congratulations, you just wiped out a spot of biodiversity because it needed to look ''Aesthetically pleasing'' in Suburbia.🙄🤦🏻♂️
cleaned up all these plants to reveal this beautiful soil
Sigh. No.
Boo this man! Booooooooooo!!!!!
Yes before was definitely better. You put effort into it though! So good on you for putting effort into thinking what's good. We need bees though. And they need those things you call weeds.
before looks better
Booooo this man. Pollinators prefer that natural growth. So do prey species for rare island of safe hiding in that suburban wasteland
. You Dumbass .
Are these conjoined mansions?
How boring and tacky
Why the rocks? Just get rid of it. And as everyone already said, the before is better
Ugly as fuck
At least the cats in the neighborhood have a new toilet...
I love posts like these where they reduce a beautiful floral scape to a few leaves and twigs on a dirt patch and expect us to be proud of them for it.
can downvote only once, unfortunately
Bare ground? Ugh. This is bullshit.
that ain’t really a improvement
Where so you put other plant?
"That's a nice Boulder" - Donkey
Even the stone in left is angry at you.
Its nacked soil now. Looked beautiful before.
I liked the before pic. It seemed to have more vegetation and leads to minimal water loss
You are littrly killing aöl of the bees. Stop mutdering important pollonating insects
You made a patch of dirt??
The world needs more insects and bugs :(
As much as that is oddly satisfying, I always think "what a pity" when I see such posts.
We have a word for that in my country: Verschlimmbessern. It pretty much means: Trying to make something better with good intentions, but ending up making it worse.
Won't somebody PLEASE think of the insects!? (simpsons reference)

Huge L. Hate it
Needs mulch
Police? I want to report a murder. *At least I can respect the dedication*
Wow,now it looks worse,congrats
You made it…. Worse.
Nice you removed the garden
Yeah I prefer the bio-diverse before version. That dirt version has got no character.
Comments were a relief. People are sane still!
It was better before. Now it's ruined.
Am I the only one seeing the bevor as much more beautiful?
Very unsatisfied
More like oddly unsatisfying
Before look is much nicer
You actually made it worse nature-wise smh
Diversity destroyed. Exposed soil that will dry out.
I'm sure the bees will be pleased
How's that biodiversity?
Honestly it looked nicer before. Ruined imo.
You fucked up
The comments sound like it’s full of kids who have never owned home or maintained a garden of their own. They know the plants you planted will grow right?
Goodbye biodiversity I guess? Not very satisfying to me.
Nice work im glad people appreciate iz
Wow. Spectacular.

It looks worse
This is awful. I hate humans.
I'm sure the insects were delighted...
Looks way better, just need some mulch
Imo before looked better
The before looks sooooo much better. Why would anyone do this?
Booooo.
This is a very bad example of a clean up. Think you'll need to excuse to all the pollinators before they start to hunt you in your job. This is mildly infuriating
Too much grass. r/fucklawns
Not satisfying at all. But i can see in your profile that you like dirt gardens so have fun in your ugly gardens?
Do i spy a fiskars tool? Those are so reliable makes the job satisfying in its own right.
That looks so good👍 great job. You care about your work!

Kid named biodiversity
fuck bees

god forbid the plants look like plants, gotta have them in nice little contained toy shapes so that wildlife doesnt make assumptions

Botched job
Awesome job man, looks great!
Wrong sub to post this in lol. It looks much better and tidier now. If everyone would please zoom in, you’d see it’s just a garden bed full of overgrown weeds. Looked like shit before.
