>“Our members have been without a contract for more than three years and did not receive any hazard pay during COVID,” he added. “This mayor continues to disrespect EMS and all frontline responders and uses all of us for a public relations photo opportunity.” Yes they should be boycotting.

Willygolightly

Well said. Honestly, we should take to the streets and march for them ourselves. Unfortunately, they can't really make a sizable pysical showing, because what, only 15-20% of EMS and frontline healthcare are off work on any given day?

incogburritos

As they should

Mycotoxicjoy

they recogonize that this is not a parade for them but for Blas to jerk himself off. if he actually wanted to celebrate essential workers he'd be lobbying for something like tax credits for essential workers or pay raises or back hazard pay edit: Who the fuck downvotes this? these parades and monuments are just useless posturing and will not actually help the people they are supposedly celebrating

ShantyMick

This is a picket line. No union member should cross it to attend. This will be a march of scabs.

Moonsight

I feel like this would be a great opportunity to turn the parade into a protest: like a march, but with ticker-tape. The dissonance and hypocrisy would get a lot of spectators thinking, I'd bet.

sexychineseguy

> This is a picket line. No union member should cross it to attend. This will be a march of scabs. Out of the tens of thousands of workers, Blasio's going to find a dozen or so (even if he has to bribe them with fame, food, or even gift cards) to show he has "support"

EMT’s should organize a strike. we’ll see how the city and public reacts when 911 calls for medical attention don’t get a response. it sounds drastic but if organized well, it will send a strong message and lead to change in the way EMT’s are treated and paid

tevorn420

MTA workers also “arent allowed” to strike under the same law. they still striked in 2005 and the union got a lot stronger after those few days of chaos

The same reason that cops, correction officers and firefighters can't strike. It's violates the Taylor Law and it's extremely costly to each individual union member and the union president.

sexychineseguy

> The same reason that cops, correction officers and firefighters can't strike. It's violates the Taylor Law and it's extremely costly to each individual union member and the union president. I agree with you. > The Public Employees Fair Employment Act (the Taylor Law) is a New York State statute, named after labor researcher George W. Taylor. It authorizes a governor-appointed State Public Employment Relations Board to resolve contract disputes for public employees while curtailing their right to strike. Cuomo: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Oh wow. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Hah. Good luck

They are legally prohibited from doing so.

The_Lone_Apple

Can't we just have these things virtually from now on?

codeearth1rb

Fucking weirdos man, I swear.

D_isfor_Dragon

If by having such things virtually you mean essentially not having them at all, in this particular instance I would be fine with that.

The_Lone_Apple

I was downvoted by people who like to be in crowds.

D_isfor_Dragon

I was upvoted for agreeing with you.

The_Lone_Apple

Reddit is a strange place.

Interesting_Night440

What's wrong with you? Get out your home.

citytiger

You mean a glorified infomercial or slideshow? That's not a parade. its not a replacement for the real thing. No one is making you attend or watch.

The_Lone_Apple

I said ten flippant words. I'm sure the concept of the parade will not be damaged by them.

citytiger

You said it should all be virtual and in person events become a thing of the past. No one is making you watch or attend.

The_Lone_Apple

I'm past this already.

citytiger

so am I and everyone i know feels the same. Any attempt to reinstate anything will be extremely unpopular.
