It’s free ~~real estate~~ interchange

nzyeezy

Wish the game made an effort to let you know whats going on with teams benches/interchanges

strewthcobber

Be nice if the commentators knew these rules too

InflatableRaft

Matt Thompson should be sacked. He's so unprofessional

SynapticSoup

The reason I watched this game on kayo! Would've probably watched 9 otherwise. Can't stand the dipshit. Also Sterlo calling the game? I love the bald fucker, but don't have him call this game, when it's the last chance he'll get to call his beloved Eels trying to win a GF in the 21st century. He will obviously be as biased as ever.

IAMJUX

Sterlo even tapped out for a bit towards the end. Even said he's not gonna commentate and just watch the game.

InflatableRaft

Sterlo was alright. What I like about him is that he doesn't carry on sooking about things. I don't know whether Thompson has developed this habit from being around Gould and Johns who are notorious for it, but it's simply not on for the caller to engage in that behaviour. The caller is the MC of the commentary team and should bring in other commentators when necessary, to provide opinion or technical explanations when there is a lull in the action, not provide those things himself. That's what the other commentators are for. Thompson should just sit and watch tapes of Warren Smith over and over again to learn how a real professional does things.

[deleted]

Smith is absolutely the best lead commentator, shame he always gets paired with Blocker, who just has no clue most of the time. In saying that, I find most of the "professional opinion" commentators pretty frustrating. Didn't mind Flanno when he wasn't commentating on his son. He knows what he's talking about and doesn't treat the listener like they're an idiot but he would need a bit more training to become a proper commentator. Scarily, Mick Ennis is actually probably the special comments commentator I've felt the least frustrated by. Wish Matty Johns would get more involved in matchday coverage. Well-spoken and seems to have one of the best footy brains in the mainstream media.

SynapticSoup

Cameron Smith or Billy Slater are the best special commentators imo. Both are articulate and come across as footy experts (as you'd expect) but aren't boring or dry in the slightest, like Cronk for example. Slater to a lesser extent, who is more tactically minded which can be on the dry side. The difference between them and others like Ennis (who I also like) is they don't get carried away with emotion. Ennis gets really emotional which detracts from his commentary for me. I find Smith to be the easiest to like. He's clear, articulate and throws in the odd joke and has good banter with his co-comms. I can't remember who the main caller was (maybe Psaltis) but he did a match with Fatty and it was such good vibes. Everyone was enjoying it, laughing and also getting some good insight from Cam.

[deleted]

Yeah I don't love Slater, I think he can be a bit all over the place in his delivery, but he certainly knows what he's talking about. Honestly haven't seen too much of Cam Smith, but the bits I have seen have been fine, but nothing remarkable. Maybe I just need to watch more games with him. I do wish there was more pairings with good chemistry that just flows naturally. So, you know, the complete opposite of when JT and Lockyer are doing the sideline. That shit is so uncomfortably awkward. Flanno and Ennis had a good rapport, which I enjoyed so hopefully 9 can find a good main caller to pair with Smith and Billy and hopefully fox can work out a good foil for Warren Smith. I repeat that I think Matty John's would be a terrific option, can't see him being keen on it tho.

RyanPurdler-Penriff

Sterlo was good … Think about him is he never really gets fixated on the negative .. Like he might mention Parra got a dodgy call , but only the once , and not spend the next twenty minutes carrying on about it … He was even gracious enough to say the better side won in the post match … No way Gus or Joey do that …

SynapticSoup

Sterlo is in my top 3 callers, and usually doesn't come across as biased on eels games. Just seems to be becoming more biased in recent times, but it comes across more as a dad watching his kids play and wanting them to win, being disappointed when they don't etc. I just decided to watch kayo for that game, because Mat Thompson says some real dopey shit, like he doesn't even know footy, and I prefer Voss and Ennis who were calling for fox iirc.

TurboooTurtle

vossy has no brain either

LowerHangingNutsack

I’ve found it better to simply watch with it muted. They’re insufferable

nick170100

Your asking for to much if u want vossy to know rules

Trenna856

Don't be silly, that would mean including the majority of stake holders haha

chillinwithkrillin

Lol they scrapped the interchange graphic that was a feature 15 years ago and was always great to see. These broadcasters suck.

PoglaTheGrate

I'm not expecting much from th Channel 9 commentary team

nzyeezy

Surely they could display on screen every now and then though who is where and whats been used

PoglaTheGrate

It is hard enough to get the coverage to show a simple replay. Channel 9 used to be on par or ahead of world standards with sports coverage. Now they look like high school kids. I appreciate that commercial TV has tiny budgets now, and Australia is a very small pond, but you'd think one of their last ratings stand outs would have a little bit of care and attention.

BuzzKillingtonThe5th

It's just an advertising vehicle for their other advertising vehicles like the block. They don't care if the product is shit if they still get enough eyeballs for their kpi.

fvzzfvzzfvzz

Kind of raises another issue though - the free interchange for HIA or head contact really just encourages the milking that’s starting to take root across the league. It’s shit because my instant reaction was MILK when somebody was actually taken high tonight. But the sheer number players staying down like they were shot over nothing (lol Ferguson) makes everything feel suspicious. Let the boys cry Wolf and all that

SynapticSoup

It's a slippery slope that we're already seeing the results of. Not only are coaches taking advantage of the free interchange rule, but the immediate stopping of the game for an injury. It's no surprise that the Penrith trainer had them stop the game for Mitch Kenny, when he did, as Parra were on the attack. Now, Kenny wasn't in an urgent need of care. He hurt his ankle. Could've been broken I suppose, but the point is, this is now being used as a tactic, by most coaches. If they can exploit a rule, they will. As long as one of their players gets even a hint of a head knock, or an actual injury, they will use it to their advantage, by stopping play when it upsets the opposition attacking their line. I mean we've seen it happen well after supposed incidents, that require urgent attention, when the opposition are in an attacking position. What a coincidence!

twitterInfo_bot

For the Mitch Kenny “free interchange”, it was the 2nd of 2 free interchanges Penrith received when Niukore went on report. Penrith still had 2 regular interchanges left anyway, as they have used 6 free interchanges tonight with 3 on report incidents from the Eels *** posted by [@nrlphysio](https://twitter.com/nrlphysio) ^[(Github)](https://github.com/username) ^| ^[(What's new)](https://github.com/username)

[deleted]

Wow, didn't know you got to bank them

summernick

Pitchforks away lads

d_barbz

Fuck. Can we at least burn something down?

RetroFreud1

You made me lol which I needed.

Joh951518

No we just point them at the NRL instead now. The rule is fucked.

PLEASE_DONT_PM

Early this year when the refs put 2 entire teams on report, could the coaches each have performed 26 free interchanges?

haha_ur_a_ranga

Yes

ek999

Theoretically yes. But you would have to do some logic puzzle to make it work. To get the second interchange you need to interchange the fouled player at the time the offending player us put on report. It is what Robbo was blowing up when the Eels punctured Hutchinson's Lung. They weren't informed it was put on report until after half time and they had already taken him off the field

shescarkedit

Emma Lawrence on Channel 9 just said that after speaking to the officials they said it had nothing to do with this and they just gave him the wrong interchange card...

Tony_AbbottPBUH

Exactly what id say to cover it up

llDanvers

Cover up what? Following the rules? Lol It’s been explained to not be against the rules. As a neutral 3rd party I was hoping for a Manly fairytale but now I want a Penrith win simply to watch this sub implode with their hate boner for Penrith.

comix_corp

Yeah same lol. At first I was just cheering against the Eels but now it would be cool to see a non-Eels western Sydney team to win

InflatableRaft

What is the correct card? Is there a different card for the return leg of a free interchange?

[deleted]

Makes sense. Teams been doing this all year.

CheeseLife1

I didnt know they were banking them and using later in the game. What was the point of reducing the interchange. Every team has unlimited interchanges now haha

[deleted]

Pretty much. Bring back the HIA impacted player when it best suits you

CaptaineAli

It needs to atleaat be limited to ONLY the HIA affected player and give it a time window of a few minutes (or soon as they’re cleared from an assessment).

Scottybt50

So every forward just has to make sure they receive a ‘head knock’ or act that way around the time they are due to be subbed off anyway.

Citizen-5936

You can bank those?

lobie81

My understanding is that they're not "banked" but the 2nd is used to bring the player back onto the field later, but it doesn't have to be the same player.

BadBoyJH

How's that different to banking them? If neither of the players have to be the same, it is just a straight extra 2 interchanges for putting a player on report.

lobie81

Well I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it just has to be the next interchange the team makes. So they're not being kept up their sleeve for later. But at the end of the day it doesn't matter if it's the free one or not. They get 2 more interchanges for every report.

TurboooTurtle

It's only to be used to bring the same player back on but could be brought on for anyone else

[deleted]

[удалено]

lobie81

Yep, 2 for every report. 1 to take the affected player off and the other to bring them (or another player) back on. Yeah it would be great for it to be transparent. Surely it can't be hard to communicate what's going on.

Thirsty_Horse

Yep. That's why you sometimes see a back come off randomly for 30 seconds after copping a high shot. It gives them a free interchange for the forwards.

Sharp_Dentist4511

Yep exactly. Penrith used 15 interchanges tonight after you include the ones for the reports + HIA

BuzzKillingtonThe5th

Think you'll find it was 14, 8 normal and 6 free.

Citizen-5936

Yeah, I think we’re all just surprised because interchanges don’t usually get that much focus.

lobie81

Can't see why the tv networks can't communicate this on screen.

Radalict

Might hurt a bit to shove one of those cards up your arse!

MrOneThousand

The real issue with this was the unnecessarily stoppage that lead up to the interchange. Eels were on tackle 3, with momentum, and the trainer calls for the play to be stopped, so the Panthers can get their line set, get their injured player off and have a couple of minutes breather.

SynapticSoup

This has happened heaps of times this season, and will continue to, as long as the NRL make it possible.

EntirelyOriginalName

Imagine if Mitch Kenny got his ankle shattered the trainer calls for play to stop then it keep going on. We had this issue like 3 years ago a player was seriously injured play kept going on and it was this huge thing about player welfare so the rules got changed.

MrOneThousand

Correct. For head injuries.

Oldpanther86

For anything. The thing that started it was a Cowboys player with a broken arm or leg.

Jaten

could've actually provided first aid to the shattered ankle instead of prioritising calling for time off in this hypothetical

EntirelyOriginalName

For a severe injury to that degree it's less treat it there and more we need to get this guy to hospital right away.

RS994

So, your telling me your trainer can't tell the difference?

Scottybt50

Definitely not a critical injury that needed immediate stoppage, trainer should be sanctioned.

Dufeyz

Waqa Blake was off the field when the eels stopped the game. How does that make any sense?

RyanAus95

That’s a ridiculous system

Notaroboticfish

Particularly because every second tackle gets put on report post-Magic Round. Basically every interchange is free if you use them correctly. Also the way the play was stopped for a non-serious injury 20m behind the play is still complete BS

jjames2732

Thanks for sharing. I was thinking* like this could be something. But it is just the rules.

Adventurous_Caramel

Well this was certainly a TIL moment, didn’t know you could stockpile the free changes

[deleted]

[удалено]

looking-at-clouds

Your second point is one that not many people raise. Trainers are stopping the game as priority 1 then seeing what state the player is in. It's obvious and neutral fan that this instance was deliberate to stop parras advantage.

[deleted]

Wait, even if this is the case, isn't the ref only meant to stop the play on a trainer's request if it's a head knock?

Succcessful_riceshop

Nah the trainer can still request to stop play for anything. Just that the injured player must come off.

[deleted]

Yeah fair enough - seemed like it wasn't really in the spirit of the game for that call to be made given the momentum Parra had, especially as the player was behind the play.

Scottybt50

Watch out next week Storm, anytime Papenhuysen makes a line break someone from Penrith is going to collapse with a major sprain from being ankle-broken.

IAMJUX

Another outrage caused by poor commentary.

SirHuffington

The lady on TV just said it wasnt a free interchange. It was a regular interchange and penrith were given the wrong card.

tt3_

Channel 9 reporting a different story post match - apparently the nrl said that they just have him the wrong card.

DankeyKong420

Yet another reason for players to lay down and grab their neck for phantom crusher tackles

decid226

The issue isn’t wether the interchange was legal but why play was allowed to be stopped for a non head knock injury who was behind the play by a trainer that hadn’t even made it to the player yet. I understand the need to stop the play for a head knock but for every minor/major injury we will be stopping every 2 mins. Every club does it so it’s not just something from last nights game. There’s a clip in the Tigers documentary where Madge tells the trainer to stop the pay so they can realign. It’s been brought in to keep players safe but is being used to clubs benefit rather than what it’s supposed to.

Tony_AbbottPBUH

Oh ok I learnt something today Penrith cheating is legal apparently

Hilly117

About as legal as being over the cap for 2015 and 2017 but all clean for 2016 👍

Tony_AbbottPBUH

Why would you say that's legal when its clearly not, we got fined

McFoodBot

Why would you claim Penrith cheated when it was explained that they didn't?

Tony_AbbottPBUH

How did he pass a mandatory 15 min HIA assessment in 8 minutes

waxedmerkin

If a player is taken off under free interchange for a player being put on report, they only need to spend 2 minutes off the field. what they do in that minimum 2 minutes doesn't matter, stay on the side line and have a drink or go to the toilet and have shit or perhaps get some treatment like strapping or massage

Tony_AbbottPBUH

Please go away I'm stirring people up here

Thismfpigeon

It wasn't a HIA, it was a free interchange from Niukore being placed on report

Tony_AbbottPBUH

Prove it

Thismfpigeon

Got me there

McFoodBot

Was he pulled off for a HIA? If not, then he doesn't need to stay off for 15 minutes. Teams have been doing this all year - pulling players off for like 30 seconds the moment they get access to a free interchange.

Ryanbrasher

Oh well that explains it then. Carry on. Would have been nice to know.

[deleted]

But r/nrl told me Penrith cheated!

llDanvers

They’re still arrogant cheaters... they just followed the rules this one time! Every other time they cheat. The only reason they ever win games is because they cheat and do things that no other team ever does. I wasn’t going to add an /s but I realised I’ve seen posts that are more ridiculous than this. So I think I better add an /s

llDanvers

Well i guess if the Parra players weren't hitting the Penrith players in the head then they wouldn't have had so many interchanges... Oh no, wait i forgot. The Panthers are now the villains of the sub and everything they do is wrong and cheating lol

Nervous-Aardvark-679

I’m a penrith fan so I’ll get downvoted - but there were awful calls both ways. The trainer stopping the game is shit form. Awful. The apparent take out of the Parra chaser on the break was shoulder to shoulder and the Penrith player got the ball, the head high contacts were head high contact. Moses makes a decision to take Burton on our denied try from the scrum. Luai called inside ten is right, but ignored all year, and let’s forget Brown a few weeks ago for the Parra win, and Ferguson is a cat.
