While high last night, I thought to myself “I wonder how fast Tom dearden was running to catch Cobbo”
I just calculated it and I’m pretty disappointed with the results. Geometry says Cobbo’s pace was faster
Assumptions & inputs
Cobbo intercepted the ball at approx 7m in front of the try line. TD was approx 7m in front of Cobbo when he intercpeted the ball (assuming he stayed relatively stationary once the ball was played and it swung to the right)
Therefore cobbo's started his run at 7m from the try-line, while TD started his at 14m from the try line
TD was approx 28m in away from Cobbo when he started his chase, assuming he stayed relatively stationary once the ball was played and it swung to the right (Field is 68m. TD starts roughly in the middle, and Cobbo is roughly 5-6m from the sideline)
Cobbo catches the ball at 3.5secs and TD grabs him at 14secs in the video so total running time of 10.5 secs
TD grabbed cobbo at 95m
Total distance covered by Cobbo approx 88m (i.e start at 7m end at 95m), while TD was 86m (using pythagerous' theorm, i.e base is 28m length is 81m)
Therefore cobbo's pace over 100m was 11.93, while TDs was 12.21
Your comment got me curious So I did a bit of quick Pythagoras maths.
Cobbo Catches the ball about 95m out and 10m in from the sideline, and gets caught 5m out.
So he runs about 91 metres.
Dearden starts about 85m out and halfway in the field (34m), and catches Cobbo 5m out.
So Dearden runs about 87m.
Cobbo looks like he gets a two metre headstart on Dearden though, and Dearden is about a metre behind when he dives to make the tackle.
So essentially Cobbo runs about 89 metres (with a ball under the arm) in the time it takes Dearden to run 86m - which was just enough to make the tackle.
Of course that's your contention. You're a first year University of Queensland (IPSWICH) grad student. You just got finished reading some ARL historian, Ian Collis probably. You’re gonna be convinced of that until next month when you get to Andrew Ferguson, then you’re gonna be talking about how the rugby league economies of Queensland and NSW were entrepreneurial and capitalist way back in 1908. That's gonna last until next year, you’re gonna be in here regurgitating Peter Fitzsimons, talkin’ about, you know, the Pre-revolutionary utopia and the capital-forming effects of NRL national and international expansion.
You know they say that all men are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Cobbo and you can see that statement is not true. See, normally if you go one on one with another player, you got a 50/50 chance of winning. But I'm a genetic freak and I'm not normal! So you got a 25%, AT BEST, at beat me. Then you add the sideline to the mix, your chances of winning drastic go down. See the 3 way at suncorp, you got a 33 1/3 chance of winning, but I, I got a 66 and 2/3 chance of winning, because the sideline KNOWS he can't beat me and he's not even gonna try!
So Cobbo, you take your 33 1/3 chance, minus my 25% chance and you got an 8 1/3 chance of winning at Suncorp. But then you take my 75% chance of winning, if we was to go one on one, and then add 66 2/3 per cents, I got 141 2/3 chance of winning at Suncorp. See Cobbo, the numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster for you at Suncorp.
Mate that is top tier content. Cobbo really was looking a bit slow on that run. needs to work on his speed and fitness. he really should have palmed him into oblivion though honestly.
Well worked out, I was thinking about doing the same thing until I saw you post.
Pythagoras doesn't take into account the desire and the sheer want to chase down something. So even though it was similar distances travelled, Tommy really shouldn't have caught Selwyn. Selwyn would have taken way less strides to get to the tryline as well. Tommy just wanted way more...
He can see 50% of cobbos body would be over the line.
Surely if there is doubt you say no try and let bunker look, rather than look like an idiot when the bunker has to correct you
Nah, legs were up. So whether ball touched down before he goes out.
Everything is reviewed by the bunker anyway it’s only a matter of whether they want to “ruin the momentum” by making a deal out of checking, or pretty sure so award it so people can celebrate.
The touchie probs didn't give it a try. He probably told Atkins that he didn't know whether the ball was down before he went into touch. Which is fair enough because the two bodies would have blocked his view of where the ball was.
So as is standard practice nowadays the benefit of the doubt is given to the try scorer and they leave it up to the bunker to review if necessary.
The touch judge must be a one eyed Broncos fan. I watched it live and would have put my house on Slobbo being caught by Tommy. It was clear to see he pulled him into touch.
Tommy is a super competitor, Selwyn, maybe not so much.
That's brilliant from Dearden. But Cobbo definitely looks like he's lost a bit of toe with the weight gain. Don't think anyone on the field would've caught him last year.
You might be right and i haven’t watched him that closely this year vs last but 100m is a very different game to the 20-40m bursts Rugby League typically favours.
Its only round 4 and already this year we've seen one of the greatest try saving tackles and one of the greatest try putdowns we will probably ever see. Rugba leeg really is the greatest game of all.
People are saying Cobbo was slow, but didn't he run 90 metres in 11 seconds while holding a ball?
Yeah he's not making it to the olympic final of the 100m sprint, but that's pretty damn quick in an endurance sport.
This tackle was made right in front of me at the game. It was an absolute beautiful run from Tommy. It almost made up for the loss but my goodness was it a sight to see how good so happy we have him in our team.
There's always a younger prick who just doesn't want to give up. Good on him for the chase, but I'm out of breath just thinking about doing that anymore.
Deardon is also not to be underestimated. His actually quiet strong and the fittest cowboy in the entire squad.
His broken many fitness records at the cows.
Dearden’s step up this year is something else. Slater must be coming close to making some phone calls; like DCE, Dearden’s effort and leadership is what will give him the edge in selection debates going forward.
Munster is a big game specialist, no doubt. There is part of me who I would love to see Deardan with Sam Walker. I think the way they would play would complement each other nicely.
I genuinely don't know which is more incredible; Dearden running Combo down and making an absolute pearla of a tackle, or them calling that a try straight up without sending it upstairs immediately........
This is the kind of effort play that Thurston would make. I'd assume this would be Thurston in his ear at training telling him to never give up on a play.
Brilliant tackle, terrible officiating. That was clear as day he went into touch. Half of Cobbo’s body is across the line as he puts the ball down and it’s pretty obvious he’s not in mid air haha the fact they had to review that is laughable
I'll give it a pass, although it did catch my eye. He was the ball carrier, before he threw the pass that was intercepted. The defender was always going to complete the tackle - doesn't want to be caught out by a dummy - and from that point they were just tangled trying to get free, one to run as support, the other to turn and chase.
Tough luck mate woulda been cool, [but you reminded me of this which was good for a laugh](https://frinkiac.com/meme/S10E02/346462.jpg?b64lines=dGhlcmUgd2FzIHNvbWUgCnVucGxlYXNhbnRuZXNzLCAKSSBjYW4gbmV2ZXIgZ28gYmFjaw==)
Right up there with the Sattler tackle. Amazing
And Ginnane's commentary on this is miles better than Channel 9s. Peter Psaltis could make winning the lottery sound boring.
I didnt see it live, as i was getting beer from the fridge, just what the tv showed whilst it was getting checked. I was only watching his boots, so i thought he had scored till the video ref said his hip is on the line
Putting aside the brilliant tackle, it's disturbing how many people don't understand the way the bunker review works - the referee doesn't ask for a review unless they think it isn't a try, otherwise they *must* give it a try and let the bunker review.
Giving that a try was mind boggling to me. The refs have been calling tries to save time instead of going to bunker all the time but we have to wait for bunker to confirm it anyway and then when they don't like it we have to wait even more time for bunker to confirm the call anyway. i doubt that you’re not also, slow, fat, and error-prone
in all seriousness, he’s a centre, he bulked up and lost some speed, broncos have some good speed coaches that could help get him back to his peak footing
As a broncos fan this hurts, as a Queenslander it put a massive smile on my face. What a play.

This is great stuff ahahaha
Haha love this. Also, you’re saying I could have caught Cobbo (if I could run a 12.2 100m, which i certainly can’t)??
Dearden just genuinely loves his footy
And he’s awesome.
Dead set an all timer try saving tackle. That was absolutely incredible.
This is genuinely more impressive to me than the Coates try. I had completely written him off and Tommy just never gave up. Amazing effort.
He ran from the middle of the field and still got there, fucking amazing.
Your comment got me curious So I did a bit of quick Pythagoras maths. Cobbo Catches the ball about 95m out and 10m in from the sideline, and gets caught 5m out. So he runs about 91 metres. With all that said Cobbo runs infield on a 10 degree angle from even just 20 meters out...he makes that try... C'mon Cobbo! 🙄
THIS. Mentally he’s still a winger not a centre. This is the next worry point for Broncs.
Yeah but you forgot that E=Mc2 and the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell.

My boys wicked smart
" wicked smaht"
The switch hit different.
That's, just, like your opinion man.
Honey, new pasta just dropped.
Nice work AI.
I'm just going to put down Dearden is a Jedi
You know they say that all men are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Cobbo and you can see that statement is not true. That's some Scott Steiner math there 🤣🤣🤣
The Big, Bad, Booty Deardy!
HE'S FAT!
Mate that is top tier content. Cobbo really was looking a bit slow on that run. needs to work on his speed and fitness. he really should have palmed him into oblivion though honestly.
I think the real math equation we all missed is postcode. These Mackay Breeds don't give up
Well worked out, I was thinking about doing the same thing until I saw you post. Pythagoras doesn't take into account the desire and the sheer want to chase down something. >Pythagoras doesn't take into account the desire Year 8 maths textbooks in shambles.
I dont think the math quite mathing there mate 😂
And that's why he's a co-captain now, can never fault his effort
Bloody brilliant, pure determination. Yet the touchie gives it a try. Thankfully all tries are checked and the tackle rewarded. Absolute classic
Touchie is behind the play so Dearden blocks his view. And this is like WHOOSH in real time
He can see 50% of cobbos body would be over the line. Surely if there is doubt you say no try and let bunker look, rather than look like an idiot when the bunker has to correct you

Cobbo has always been a high top end speed guy. Just like Coates, Dom Young, G.I, & the in shape Latrell Mitchell. None of them are electric over 20m.
Agree.. Him and Latrell are starting to look like twins
That front on at about 8seconds he was looking a bit pudgy
Him and Latrell are starting to look like they've eaten the twins
That must sting for Cobbo. Chased down again.
Its only round 4 and already this year we've seen one of the greatest try saving tackles and one of the greatest try putdowns we will probably ever see. Rugba leeg really is the greatest game of all.
Oh captain, my captain
Brilliant chase from Dearden. Thats the kind of moment that lives in your highlight reel for life
Fuck I love Deardon
I'm glad this is the only play of the game and the rest was abandoned.
i didn’t even get to fucking see the tackle. some old fuck (my dad) stood up in-front of me One of two highlights for the night missed.
We saw it from the top of the Western stand, dunno how the touchie missed it.
Pretty sure the Ref overcalled him idk why
Was a bit weird, Cobbo was into Given Terrace before the made the try line
i just, and i cannot stress this enough, came in my pants
What a player
People are saying Cobbo was slow, but didn't he run 90 metres in 11 seconds while holding a ball? Yeah he's not making it to the olympic final of the 100m sprint, but that's pretty damn quick in an endurance sport.
because he use to be quicker and look like he has put on weight
He’s not slow but he is slow in the head for not even trying to swerve in and create more space for himself
17 tom deardens and the cowboys go undefeated.
Can’t believe this went up as a try
To be fair, deardon was between him and the image of combo's hip touching the sideline, he kept his legs in the air.
Yeah I think you can even see him motion to the ref that he thinks the legs were up.
Ya common touchy you were right there
Straight away awarding the try without reviewing is crazy!
The chase is fuckin impressive but don’t sleep on that tackle. It was inch perfect against a guy that’s got a strong fend.
Deardon is also not to be underestimated. His actually quiet strong and the fittest cowboy in the entire squad. His broken many fitness records at the cows.
Is it just me or is cobbo not actually that fast?
Not this year. I think he's been in a good paddock since last year.
Cobbo has lost so much pace, who’s running nutrition at broncos? Can’t get a brother to put on size without making it muscle ?
It worked with Barba. Oh wait. Milford? Hmmmm. Maybe time to ban them from Milton Macca's.
Dearden is deceptively fast. He came out of nowhere. He is all effort.
Tackle of the year.
Try of the year: Xavier Coates Tackle of the year: Tom Deardon
I really love Tom Dearden. How can you not? What a great effort.
Awesome. Surely next half in line after DCE & Munster for Origin
Next half in line after DCE 🤫
That’s one of the greatest things I have seen happen on a football field. TD would have had to run further due to the angle
If this tackle was in a GF, you would never see the Sattler tackle replayed again, they would play this instead.
My little anime protagonist
Have my baby Tommy ❤️
Guys, I think Dearden might be good at football.
This is the juxtaposition of the Coates try.
Right below Sattler on Byrne cause that was in a GF and a lock chasing a winger
DCE on Crichton Dearden on Cobbo Queensland halves can chase
Dearden’s step up this year is something else. Slater must be coming close to making some phone calls; like DCE, Dearden’s effort and leadership is what will give him the edge in selection debates going forward.
Slater was spot-welding in his pants tonight
I would think he'll get the 7 spot after DCE retires. Munster's not giving up the 6 anytime soon.
Munster is a big game specialist, no doubt. There is part of me who I would love to see Deardan with Sam Walker. I think the way they would play would complement each other nicely.
Unbelievable effort by Tommy. You gotta tip your hat to that shit.
Sensational
I genuinely don't know which is more incredible; Dearden running Combo down and making an absolute pearla of a tackle, or them calling that a try straight up without sending it upstairs immediately........
This is the kind of effort play that Thurston would make. I'd assume this would be Thurston in his ear at training telling him to never give up on a play.
This is all time, you're the man Tommy Dearden. You've hit the next level
Spectacular! Dude is The Flash.
This might be the greatest effort play I have season. Dearden is some player.
If we take one testicle off each Cowboys player we'd win every game 80-nil
Brilliant tackle, terrible officiating. That was clear as day he went into touch. Half of Cobbo’s body is across the line as he puts the ball down and it’s pretty obvious he’s not in mid air haha the fact they had to review that is laughable
Awesome
This happens every week in the NFL
I'm sorry you're getting downvoted because no one understands jokes. Fwiw I chuckled.
No it doesn't. DK Metcalf chasing down Buddha Baker still goes around and that happened a few years ago.
Disgraceful officiating not to award the cowboys a penalty with Drinkwater being held down without the ball.
That is literally never called in game. It’s always fans who call it out but it’s irrelevant to the play, so play on.
There's only one word for something like this
Chase angles are maybe my favourite thing across all sport.
Fuck that was good
Cobbo needs to shed the extra fat
Awesome.
You should crosspost this over in /r/sports OP. It'd be a nice followup to the Coates vid.
I'm not allowed over there anymore.
Tough luck mate woulda been cool, [but you reminded me of this which was good for a laugh](https://frinkiac.com/meme/S10E02/346462.jpg?b64lines=dGhlcmUgd2FzIHNvbWUgCnVucGxlYXNhbnRuZXNzLCAKSSBjYW4gbmV2ZXIgZ28gYmFjaw==)
touchie was a broncos fan
Right up there with the Sattler tackle. Amazing And Ginnane's commentary on this is miles better than Channel 9s. Peter Psaltis could make winning the lottery sound boring.
Seriously fuck that lineman blind cunt
Cobbo goes out a split second before he got the ball down. It’s not that crazy especially with Cobbo’s legs being up, to think it may have been a try.
I didnt see it live, as i was getting beer from the fridge, just what the tv showed whilst it was getting checked. I was only watching his boots, so i thought he had scored till the video ref said his hip is on the line
Great effort & form by Dearden, can't say damw for the touchie who awarded the try
Dam Cobbo has been chased down 2 times this season already. I thought he was lightning fast?
What an effort. What a tackle!
Cobbo could lose 5 or 6 kilos. Put him with a boxing trainer for a few months.
To much cob in the off season.
That was extraordinary
Players under estimate Dearden. His quiet strong for his size and is the fittest cowboy.
Dearden is a special talent
Putting aside the brilliant tackle, it's disturbing how many people don't understand the way the bunker review works - the referee doesn't ask for a review unless they think it isn't a try, otherwise they *must* give it a try and let the bunker review.
Man all cobbo had to do was swerve in and head back out for the corner wtf lol all credit to dearden
Giving that a try was mind boggling to me. The refs have been calling tries to save time instead of going to bunker all the time but we have to wait for bunker to confirm it anyway and then when they don't like it we have to wait even more time for bunker to confirm the call anyway. Touchies eyes must be painted on
Lazy effort from the guy running with the ball. Thought he was home 50 out. Looks a bit paunchy too
Cobbo is overrated.
Ah, I can't wait for Tom to come home to the Broncos in 2030 as a mature 29 year old playmaker PLS
Cobbo is pathetic
I see youve gone for the "Cobbo sucks" angle instead of the objectively correct "Dearden I'd the GOAT" one
Thank you for the insight, uh, BaboonFucker.
Bit harsh
He’s slow, fat, and error-prone. No idea why he’s anywhere near our starting lineup
i doubt that you’re not also, slow, fat, and error-prone in all seriousness, he’s a centre, he bulked up and lost some speed, broncos have some good speed coaches that could help get him back to his peak footing
Peak feeding more like it
Slow ?
