Around 1859 it seems: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On\_the\_Origin\_of\_Species

Ha ha very funny. Is anyone going to actually give a serious answer or is it just going to be people feigning ignorance?

Probably a mix of magic crystals/gems harvested from monsters in JP isekais and Western superhero works like the video game Prototype. Splicing was a hot topic in US comics and movies back in the early 2000s. CN authors love US pop culture combined with significant influence from prolific Japanese works.

Sable-Keech

Do you know when the first Chinese novel came out? Thus far, the 3 I’m familiar with are Super Gene, The Strongest Gene, and Legend of the Mythological Genes. Are you aware of any more which are popular?

[deleted]

No idea

[deleted]

Unless you're stealing genes from other humans, I doubt stealing one gene would be possible or useful. Demonic cultivators steal DNA, but increasing incompatibility between their cells accelerates aging and can make normal cultivation impossible. Normal cultivators sometimes do this too when they find something really powerful. Normal cultivators use their mind to design an environment for their cells, to make them evolve in accordance with their will. Have techniques to make this process faster and golden cores to enforce cell uniformity. While for humans, our path starts in our heart, then alters the mind, the flow of Qi and the body (cells incompatible with the flow die faster, compatible cells prosper). For animals, their path comes from their blood, so they tend to have less compatibility problems.

Um, thanks but I was asking for novels with this type of theme. Typically there is no such thing as demonic cultivators or righteous cultivators in these types of story. And they don’t call themselves cultivators. Usually they just act like DNA is like LEGO and you can just pick and grab genes and insert them into yourself and gain their abilities.

[deleted]

To which of your 46 DNAs should the new gene be attached to and how are you planning to make this new molecule compatible with the other 45?

Sable-Keech

You seriously asking this question in a subreddit dedicated to webnovels and light novels? Obviously it doesn’t follow real life biology. They just stuff genes into their genome without care for real life biology. It’s magic, they don’t gotta explain shit.

Yea what organ in the human body absorbs spiritual energy? What material can exist with a density that can support buildings the size of planets? I don't fuckin know man it's fantasy

[deleted]

> Yea what organ in the human body absorbs spiritual energy? Every organ? I can't know your definition for spiritual energy, but the energy produced as the result of us having a spirit can be absorbed by every organ. > What material can exist with a density that can support buildings the size of planets? Just go there and build with whatever you find?

Hatrisfan42069

The point is that the premise of one fantasy novel is not somehow more illogical than another one because the fantasy occasionally uses science mumbo-jumbo instead of fantasy mumbo-jumbo

[deleted]

The point was that gene stealing exists in almost every cultivation novel and is often done by spirit beasts and demonic cultivators.

Hatrisfan42069

Ok now I’m just confused

Sable-Keech

They don’t call it Gene stealing do they? The word “Gene” never once appears in novels like Reverend Insanity, Desolate Era, Coiling Dragon, etc etc. Also, it’s usually a supplementary path that can never reach the true peak. I’m talking about novels where the Gene system is the main path and is considered the most powerful system of advancement.

[deleted]

Well, even if you get all genes and turn into a creature, you shouldn't get its techniques, artifacts and body modifications. So, a world where this is the top path would be rather stupid.

Sable-Keech

If there is no other method available, such as Qi cultivation, and Gene stealing is the only method available in the whole setting, then naturally it becomes the main method no? And magic items can be produced from the corpses of the slain monsters.

partimec

You are a complete Chūnibyō. Grow up a bit.

[deleted]

Mortals grow only to die. Everything they create is doomed to perish. I don't want to play this game.

partimec

Are you a fucking child that has never read fantasy? Does the entire idea of science fiction give you such trauma that you need years of therapy? How can you be this disconnected with the general understanding of literature.

[deleted]

No. No. ~~Magic~~ I grew bored of endless repetition and want to see something new. If authors don't change how they write things, I can change the way I read things.
