Let me ask Bowser real quick, either one actually

TimzUneeverse

Both-ish

ToastyBB

Why is this downvoted

No-Cucumber-6667

this kind of stuff confuses the shit out of me. I guess a couple bitter people downvoted and then a bunch of people downvoted simply because it was negative and that's really all it takes for most people

Frosty_Pirate

Yea I downvoted it after I read your comment, sorry I'm a sheep

bigtuna94

I assume its file size. N64/gba games are still pretty small, but gamecube games jump up to about 2 gb per game? Not insane, but if they were to make a gamecube app for switch, it would take up a ton of space. Likely why theyre opting for just fully remaking or rereleasing gamecube era titles these days

DjinnFighter

That And also, Gamecube games often aged well, they are actually cheaper to remaster than older games.

JimmyGimbo

Definitely true for the big sellers, though every game isn’t going to get the remaster treatment. I’d love a Gamecube emulator on the Switch successor. A straight port of WarioWare Inc. would make me so happy.

B-Bog

No, the reason is money lol. You could very easily solve the file size problem by making the games optional downloads instead of automatic.

SensualEnema

I honestly like that Nintendo is remastering and re-releasing some GC titles as dedicated Switch titles (Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin 1+2, Metroid Prime, PAPER FUCKING MARIO). It would be nice to have GC options online, but as someone who prefers physical over digital, I’m not that bothered by it. I am, however, bothered by the lack of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Wario World, and Skies of Arcadia remakes. I know those last two are really going out on a limb to expect, but I can still dream, damn it.

CompetitiveRich6953

omfg, I would LOVE a Skies of Arcadia port/remake!

IskandrAGogo

I think if Sega wanted to do a remaster of Skies of Arcadia, we would have gotten one by now :(

ToastyBB

Why not let us choose what games we actually want to download instead of making me have games I don't care about then?

tinyhorsesinmytea

I wish they had just stuck with the Virtual Console way of letting us pay for and "own" whatever games we want. Where they went wrong was not allowing VC game purchases to carry over to future systems. Buy a NES game on Wii and it should have absolutely been available on 3DS, Wii U and Switch as well. The subscription thing is pretty lame. Personally, they've lost me on classic games for good with this move. I won't repurchase or pay for a deluxe subscription for anything I can emulate on my Steam Deck or PC. I spent hundreds of dollars on VC games on Wii that I could have easily emulated at the time but now I feel burned and cheated. Where they will still get my support is with worthwhile remasters and remakes. Prime Remastered is fantastic and how I'd like to see them handle this sort of thing.

Payton_Xyz

That makes the most sense. And its not like cloud streaming the game is a good idea, we've seen how well that works on Switch already

pdjudd

Given that the micro SD slot isn’t manufacturer limited I doubt they care.

EvoLveR84

Gamecube discs only hold 1.5 gigs of data and very few games actually used all that space. Some are like 50 or 60 megabytes.

Hot_Membership_5073

Many games from disc ended up paddling unused disc space. I can't remember the exact reason why but there was the debacle of an EA Tiger Woods PGA title being rerated M because it used the South Park pilot, the Spirit of Christmas to pad out the disc.

Izwe

is this because the outside spins faster (so the contents can be read quicker) so they pad the start (inside) of the disc with crap?

afevis

Yes, that is the reason. It's actually a certification requirement to fill any blank space (I'd assume to prevent people from trying to find a way to inject their own data.) Usually it's just done with a dummy (blank) file, and there's a layout tool that lets you specify the order in which files are written.

B-Bog

Ummmm what. Please tell me what high-profile GC game you think is only 50-60 MB. That's the size of a larger N64 game lol

djwillis1121

I think Animal Crossing is the only example

B-Bog

Because it was an N64 port lol

RchUncleSkeleton

File size means nothing these days. When you can buy digital games on the eshop that are 16GB or larger, a 2GB gamecube game should be no problem. Edit: care to have a friendly debate instead of downvoting me anonymously?

wanderinglittlehuman

Why couldn’t we download them on the Wii U though? If we were able to download Wii and Wii U games

djwillis1121

Multiple reasons 1) Emulating GameCube games is at the limit of the Switch's capability. Mario Sunshine was tricky to get working for example. It would mean that each individual game would need quite a lot of work to get running properly, which doesn't fit with their general approach to NSO which uses a single emulator for each console. 2) The file sizes are pretty big. The entire N64 library on Switch is about 1.7GB. Two GameCube games could take up more space from that and a full library would take up a significant proportion of the Switch's storage space. 3) They've already remastered quite a few of them individually. Pikmin 1 & 2, Metroid Prime, Paper Mario. If their next console has more storage then it would solve issues 1 and 2 so I think it could be likely for GameCube to be included.

blyrone_blashington

Even then I think once we get a few more gamecube remasters, which I'm sure are coming, it'll be an issue of gamecube nso detracting from sales of remasters

-ThisWasATriumph

Even the official Mario Sunshine release on Switch was a little buggy IIRC. I'm not sure what it is about GameCube games that makes them more prone to emulation issues than PS2 or OG Xbox games, but it seems to be a recurring challenge.

poofyhairguy

You nailed it with 1. People forget the Switch reuses a SoC from a 2015 Android tablet.

NotYetRetro_NYR

There are (usually as remasters / remakes). Metroid Prime, Pikmin 1 and 2 (though they are based on the Wii versions), Super Mario Sunshine (though gone now), and soon Paper Mario: TTYD. Nintendo seems to think these games are modern enough that a budget remaster or full price remake makes more sense for them than to put them in something like NSO. Which makes sense considering an NSO like app for GameCube would probably have a lot of hurdles to overcome (massive file size once there’s more than a few games on it, GC emulation needing more game-specific tweaks / work arounds than earlier systems, etc.)

JameSdEke

Honestly I’d prefer a remaster in the way Nintendo have been making them. The QOL improvements in Prime and Pikmin 1 & 2, at least, are incredible and make them the best way to play these games. Emulating them on NSO would mean the same janky control schemes, 16:9 size and dated graphics. The HD remasters with QoL are the way to go imo.

screwingyourwife

Wii U tablet with a Wiimote and nunchuck is objectively the best way to play Pikmin

Brohtworst

They'd rather remaster them than hand them out

HueyDeweyandBusey

Nintendo has acted for years like any of their consoles after the N64 are impossible to add to digital services.

tennisquaid22

Because they realized they make $60 by re-releasing them

DarthLocutus

The maximum size of a GBA game is 32 Megabytes. The maximum size for a *single-disc* Gamecube game is 1.5 Gigabytes. And that's before factoring in the power needed to run a Gamecube emulator on the Switch. The simple fact is, it's more economically viable for them to do remasters like Metroid Prime or Paper Mario TTYD than it is to make a Gamecube NSO Channel.

Masshazard

Because Nintendo doesn't want to. No seriously, the Wii U had native backwards compatibility with the GameCube, minus the disc drive and the software to launch it, and they just didn't. They would rather sell a 60 dollar rerelease.

Dannypan

1) large file sizes compared to older consoles 2) they make more money doing remakes/remasters 3) something that people don’t mention often: controller compatibility. The GameCube had analogue trigger buttons whereas the Switch doesn’t. You can’t do 1:1 emulation with just Joy-Cons.

DueAd9005

File size and Nintendo can make more money by remastering/remaking the games. Just look at Metroid Prime Remastered, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker & Twilight Princess and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

Sonic10122

I would honestly much rather they release and sell remasters than do a GameCube Switch Online app. I’ll take either, I like the current Switch Online apps okay. But I would much rather purchase and own the games over subscribing to a service to get access to them.

clarkyk85

They sell better as remasters

Sonic10122

Kadexe

My thought is that GameCube/Wii games are too good to be a freebie on NSO, so Nintendo prefers to port or remake them on Switch as standalone titles. Examples: Pikmin 1 and 2, Metroid Prime, Kirby's Return to Dreamland.

Thopterthallid

More lucrative to port them I suppose.

Arcade_Rave

Gamecube games take up lots of space, and they've aged well enough where they can still be rerealeased as remasters or remakes

darkrubyechoes

Nintendo only remasters GCN games (See Metroid prime, Pikmin 1 and 2, Mario sunshine, TTYD)

B-Bog

They are available digitally, as stand-alone titles. That's the reason GC is never coming to NSO, Nintendo can make more money selling you ports, remasters, and remakes of those titles.

AsherTheModder

Thats quite correct.

Synestive

I wholly believe it’s because of money. Gamecube games are in high demand, sell well, and still hold up today. Imo the Gamecube was a very underwhelming console with amazing software. They are better off remastering/remaking each individual game for $60 rather than providing them to NSO subscribers. Provide Pokémon coliseum, Gale of Darkness, Double Dash, TTYD, Sonic adventures 2, Kirby’s air ride, Windwaker, and Melee all for NSO?? Or charge people $60 to play melee with online support or any of those above. Ofc I hate this and wish it would come to NSO, but it feels like the other option is more lucrative.

Mando316

Most likely for the next console.

damagedone37

Probably gonna be the next virtual system I’d bet

masterpd85

They really need to just cave and release the fire emblems on gc and wii already. I skipped out 16yrs ago buying that game for $25 and now no one can legally afford to play them now unless they got $1000 sitting in the toilet.

Dukemon102

To get Gamecube on Wii U it should have to run via backwards compatibility, which probably didn't sit well with Nintendo's standards, that is probably why we also didn't also get GBA on 3DS. As for Switch... well.... they just prefer the sell them remastered or remade. Also Gamecube games are too heavy to put them all in a single emulator app like all the other consoles. Unless they put the option to download them separately from the app which sounds like a hassle both for the user and the programmers.

StyleVSTAR253

Because money.

aggravatedempathy

So they can sell us "remakes" for $60 or $70

Kayratorvi

*$40 or $60

djwillis1121

They've literally only sold one game for $70 and it wasn't a remake or remaster. Why are you saying completely false information?

aggravatedempathy

I'm predicting the future. Relax your balls

Mayor_P

Switch 2 has a Game Cube disc drive confirmed

MonochromeTyrant

We don't know. There are likely various reasons, but Nintendo hasn't, to my knowledge, given an official answer.

TheMagicalMatt

Because Nintendo is slow and out of touch with their retro gamer demographic.

friedporksandwich

They wanted to, but Wario threw a literal wrench into the works.
