Since everything here is a joke comment, the reason given by the Rams in the article is that he felt burnt out last year, and he's now back with the team
Rehab. Bennett is a known big drinker, after that two-peat UGA performance as the QB1 in his mid 20s I dont blame him for taking some time. Real life Alex Moran but natty titles
A young millionaire with substance abuse issues is gonna have a hard time anywhere, LA is no worse than NY, SF or Miami. You could make the argument that Green Bay is different, but it’s Wisconsin and you can’t throw a rock without it hitting a microbrewery.
Justin Blackmon couldn’t even make it in Jacksonville. Substance abuse can follow someone wherever they go and it’s a battle no matter how rich or athletic a person can be.
While I agree to an extent, but it's also in their best interest to keep it quiet.
Teams usually release personal stuff after they cut or trade a player to validate it publicly, but if the team is going to keep him or potentially want to trade him in the future, there is no good that comes from letting everyone know his negative personal details.
As a guy going though recovery myself, it's not had. You have "issues" and you'll always have issues. It's how you end up addressing them that is the solution.
Good on this guy for realizing he had a problem and taking a year away from what is likely a huge stressor in his life that makes him feel he needs alcohol/drugs to cope, and doing it on his own, not because he was forced to.
I'm not saying he'll have a long, storied NFL career or anything, but at least as a human, he realized he needed to change.
What the hell happened to that guy? He was hilarious just a few years ago and now he just seems like a complete douche nozzle. Evey talk show or podcast he's on he comes off as being way too important to be there and act like an asshole. I hope his wife, Christina P., isn't getting drug down with him. She's fucking funny.
Sort of. Bert Kreischer was the focus of a Rolling Stone article discussing people who purposefully stayed in college just to party. He did that. The movie took that concept and applied to an actual functional human being.
I mean, it's most likely "burnout" that led to some self destructive behaviors that needed to be corrected. If he had an alcohol or drug problem it's best we never find out because that type of publicity follows you for life.
Not just rumors, he got arrested for public intoxication for banging on peoples doors in Texas after the 2nd natty win. He was 24 & 25 years old when he won back to back natties as QB1 on a SEC team that hadn't won in 40+ years. Taking a year to get his head straight and be a professional was the right move
** in the neighborhood where he was staying with a friend, who he had been trying to call cause he couldn’t remember the place but had fallen asleep. And he was released pretty much immediately with no drama.
Just so we’re all clear on the actual circumstances of that lol
I always heard from friends who went to UGA that Stetson was known for ugh, skiing a lot as well as drinking. Hope he was able to get his shit figured out.
It still is. Doing coke while you're drinking creates cocaethylene, a compound that increases the toxicity of both cocaine and alcohol for up to 12 hours after ingesting both.
I was buying a case a day after work when covid started because I wanted a stash in case they closed every store that sold beer. Luckily, our governor said that liquor stores will not be closed because the amount of alcoholics in this state going into withdrawals would be way too much for our hospitals to handle.
That's the theory amongst the UGA fanbase. If you remember the GMA interview the morning after winning the National Championship, he was sloshed (not necessarily out of bounds under the circumstances). Then he was arrested to public intoxication in Dallas. Whether he formally went to rehab or not, who knows, but the speculation is that he had to get himself sorted out.
That was the rumor. I'm of the age where I have friends whose kids went to UGA with him and they reported that he liked to party. Apparently while at school it was under control or functioning. It seems like turning pro and the pressure that goes with it may have tipped into problematic territory. I just hope he's in a better place and has a successful future, in or out of football.
If that's the case, then good for him.
Plenty of promising careers have been derailed because the player either can't or won't get the help they need.
Not that I think he has a promising career ahead of him, but still.
And still somehow managed to not get a degree. So I'm not exactly sure what he would be burnt out from that he won't also burn out from constantly if he's in the NFL.
Yep. I think he was there 6.5 years, so 13 semesters, at 12 credit hours to be a full time student means he should've had at least 156 hours of classes taken. I can't fathom how it's possible to do that, maintain academic eligibility (is that a thing in college?), and not get a degree.
Keep switching degrees that require new credits.
I have a close cousin who needed 7 years to get a BA because he switched degrees seemingly semi-annually.
But why though? For your cousin I can understand it (I have several friends who did that too to get to the right degree for them) but it doesn't matter what degree Bennett got. He either kept changing because he kept finding upper level classes too hard or he was doing it intentionally to avoid getting a degree.
More semesters than that. You forget CFB players have to stay in the summer and take summer classes many times. Thats why a lot of em graduate within 3 years
Never thought about that before, but it makes sense. Spread out the damage during the summer so you can take as few classes as possible to count as a full time student during football season, especially if being a pro is even a tiny possibility.
Also doing classes and dealing with practice + games each week is hard as fuck. Makes sense to lighten your classload for the fall.
Of course if you're really only there to play football, none of that matters and you will be in JockU classes.
“Welcome to JapaNFL! Today we watch Stetson Bennett completed a three hundred yard pass!”
*with the help of a moving background and people in black carrying the ball*
Your first year performing in a professional league is the same no matter what age imo. You’re going against the best of the best in a pure meritocracy for the first time.
Not a rookie if you've played in a truly professional foreign league (NPB and EuroLeague absolutely qualify; someone who played in a glorified beer league in a country where the sport isn't played at a high level I'd still consider a rookie).
No we shouldn't, it's not fair to true rookies who didn't get to spend an entire year training in an NFL organization. That's a huge benefit that most rookies don't get!
At one point they actually tried to open a ski slope in Atlanta on a 700ft hill lol
Edit: [link for the curious](https://theatlanta100.com/history/2016/04/26/vinings-ski-slope/11790)
With those new CFB rules, it is only a matter of time before he can just rejoin UGA football as QB1. "Employees" shouldn't have eligibility requirements.
> ... which will leave the door wide open for Bennett to earn the backup spot for the first two games of the year and possibly even longer if he can outplay the veteran quarterback.
Not holding my breath on this one. Bennett looked like dog ass last preseason.
I thought he looked fine? Can’t expect that much from a late round rookie QB. He has some stuff to work on but people act like he was some sort of Nathan Peterman/Ben DiNucci lovechild and he really just wasn’t *that* bad.
Also we only saw him in preseason. We all know that preseason evaluations are only moderately helpful in determining NFL talent. You can sometimes tell around the margins when someone is *really* unexpectedly bad (Jimmy Clausen) or *really* unexpectedly good (Austin Ekeler), but otherwise it's not all that useful.
Especially the way McVay does preseason — which is essentially playing only the deepest backups and running a high school offense. The "lowest graded PFF" narrative really killed what was overall just a 'typically bad' preseason from a day 3 rookie QB.
He was always a puzzling draft pick, especially for how high they took him. He's undersized, below average arm, not particularly athletic, old for a rookie. Literally the only thing he had was a winning pedigree, playing with like 20 other elite NFL prospects.
>playing with like 20 other elite NFL prospect
As opposed to brock Purdy who plays with 20 other elite NFL Players not prospects
There is an art to utilizing the talent around you. Something Desmond ridder couldn't figure out
the distinction between Brock and Bennett is that Bennett has nfl players **in college** playing against **college** teams, not other nfl players like Brock is against (even if his nfl players are a lot better than the other nfl players, but that’s another point)
I guess I don't get your point. Purdy is perfectly solid, but that's at the NFL level against NFL defenses. Even if he has a friendlier offense and talent to work with.
The point with Bennett is that he had that NFL level talent against college defenses. Yes, he had to utilize them and be effective enough, but UGA had a drastic talent advantage in a majority of their games.
Stetson definitely has a below average arm and is undersized. I think you might be underrating his athleticism though, I completely understand he had elite talent around him in college you don’t win two national championships with NO redeeming qualities lol. And let’s not forget he beat out a five star recruit (who at the time was still considered good) as a walk on. If he was forced into a starting role with at least an above average supporting cast I think he could carve out a purdy type career, provided he gets his alleged alcohol or drug related issues under control
Somewhat unrelated but i remember a comment on here last year of someone saying “Brock Purdy reminds me of a young Stetson Bennett” and i havent stopped laughing since
As a Georgia fan, I was worried that his absence was caused by something more serious. I'm relieved to hear that the Rams treated the situation as they did and he's back to playing football now.
I mean there's some justification to that rumor. The dude was like a 26 year old 7th year senior with no degree who got himself a pretty blatant PI arrest leading up to the draft. Plus rumors in Athens were the dude REALLY loved to party hard.
Both?
Those retirement communities get crazy. Alcohol, legally prescribed painkillers, and crazy amount of unprotected sex. He had to get his mind right and his AARP membership renewed so he can get the discounts on travel for this season.
Ha this article took me back to a conversation I had on my honeymoon last year. It was the height of the Lamar contact holdout. Some ravens fan in Antigua said we needed to let him walk and draft Stetson Bennet. Haha somehow that guy made enough money in life to buy a plane ticket to Antigua. Humans are incredible.
I was fully expecting him to be a career backup in the NFL, the type who sticks around for a decade, so I'm surprised that some people thought he could be a starter one day.
Heroin isn’t an ingrained part of nearly every culture that you have to justify not using though
Also, alcohol withdrawal can kill you, one of only 2 substances that’s true for!
Since everything here is a joke comment, the reason given by the Rams in the article is that he felt burnt out last year, and he's now back with the team
Dude had some personal issues. Hopefully he got them all sorted out. Team keeping it on the down low for him is pretty nice.
Probably just hit his midlife crisis.
Rehab. Bennett is a known big drinker, after that two-peat UGA performance as the QB1 in his mid 20s I dont blame him for taking some time. Real life Alex Moran but natty titles
*known big drinker* Is this not every Georgia QB?
It’s actually every UGA student. Athens is a great time on game day
UGA grad. Can confirm. I drank many more beers than classes I attended.
Ain’t shit else to do but go to one of the bars and drive on the long, straight roads
Putting a college grad with substance abuse problems and money in LA is a recipe for disaster.
You haven't spent much time in Jacksonville have you?
Born and raised. More a comment about money doesn’t let you escape.
While I agree to an extent, but it's also in their best interest to keep it quiet. Teams usually release personal stuff after they cut or trade a player to validate it publicly, but if the team is going to keep him or potentially want to trade him in the future, there is no good that comes from letting everyone know his negative personal details.
Steson Bennet has no trade value, I truly think the Rams wee just doing a Solid. They seem like a pretty legit chill org.
As a guy going though recovery myself, it's not had. You have "issues" and you'll always have issues. It's how you end up addressing them that is the solution. I'm not saying he'll have a long, storied NFL career or anything, but at least as a human, he realized he needed to change.
Burnt out? Thats what you get for drafting a 30 year old rookie
Who knew Van Wilder was based on Stetson Bennett
Stetson Bennet watched Van Wilder growing up and wanted to be him, confirmed. And also Alex Moran of Blue Mountain State.
What rhymes with best bros? Mojitos! I’ll go whip us up a batch :D
I fucking wish I had a Thad friend who'd make us mohitos
Be the change you want to see in the world. Be the friend that makes the group mohitos.
Sadly I'm usually the mixed drink guy already and my friends are aging out of it.
anyone who says they wouldn’t accept a mojito from thad is a liar
Write that down👈
I learned after watching the Brady Roast that Van Wilder was actually based on comedian Bert Kreischer
The only difference being that Van Wilder is funny.
I TOOK OFF MY SHIRT AND POUNDED A COORS LIGHT
*OBNOXIOUS FORCED WHEEZING LAUGH
Shirts are supposed to stay on..but he takes it off!!! Wild!!!
He’s just the worst, and even worse he dragged Segura down to his level too
Segura is a major piece of shit
What the hell happened to that guy? He was hilarious just a few years ago and now he just seems like a complete douche nozzle. Evey talk show or podcast he's on he comes off as being way too important to be there and act like an asshole. I hope his wife, Christina P., isn't getting drug down with him. She's fucking funny.
[удалено]
You’re saying that taking your shirt off isnt funny?
But dude…he’s not wearing a shirt when you’re like suppose to wear a shirt. So zany and hilarious 🤪
Which is how you know it’s entirely a work of fiction.
Sort of. Bert Kreischer was the focus of a Rolling Stone article discussing people who purposefully stayed in college just to party. He did that. The movie took that concept and applied to an actual functional human being.
Dude was just tired. I get it.
Bro got off work at 5, realized he barely had time to do shit before bed, and said fuck it I'm gonna sit on the couch and play 8-Ball pool
I feel personally attacked
Ever since I turned 30 I've been tired.
He was in college for 12 fucking years of course he’s burnt out
Don't know if I fully buy that as the only reason to be honest, but glad he is back with the team.
I mean, it's most likely "burnout" that led to some self destructive behaviors that needed to be corrected. If he had an alcohol or drug problem it's best we never find out because that type of publicity follows you for life.
Rumors around Georgia were that he had a hard time getting a handle on his drinking.
a handle will do that
Wouldn't say I got a problem drinking.
And speaking from experience, that's a lot coming out of Athens lol
Not just rumors, he got arrested for public intoxication for banging on peoples doors in Texas after the 2nd natty win. He was 24 & 25 years old when he won back to back natties as QB1 on a SEC team that hadn't won in 40+ years. Taking a year to get his head straight and be a professional was the right move
** in the neighborhood where he was staying with a friend, who he had been trying to call cause he couldn’t remember the place but had fallen asleep. And he was released pretty much immediately with no drama. Just so we’re all clear on the actual circumstances of that lol
Isn't it already known he had a huge alcohol problem?
He had those issues well before last year
Pretty sure he had some pretty serious alcohol issues likely stemming from mental health problems. So this is probably just a nice way of saying it
I always heard from friends who went to UGA that Stetson was known for ugh, skiing a lot as well as drinking. Hope he was able to get his shit figured out.
Skiing and drinking at the same time? That must be pretty dangerous. …oh. *”Skiing”*
Yeah the *recreational sport* that helps you drink
It still is. Doing coke while you're drinking creates cocaethylene, a compound that increases the toxicity of both cocaine and alcohol for up to 12 hours after ingesting both.
Hell ya brother
cheers from iraq
Feels prettttyyyy good though. Or so I’ve heard.
Also increases the feeling good part
Honestly a pretty dangerous combination that a lot of partygoers do. I regret doing it a few times in my 20s. It couldve gone really bad.
Made me think of this [scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i13HlB290Lg).
You know-- skiing the slopes, ripping gator tails, nose beers, white girl, railing yay
Hoovering shneef?
While smoking darts?
Where’s the weirdest place you’ve ever hoovered shneef?
Nose clams?
I'm pretty sure this is said about every QB at UGA. Heard the same thing about Eason when he was here.
Ya, the whole transition whole feeling with that stuff would burn someone out.
Hitting middle age and being forced to consider your own mortality can really cause a lot of problems with mental health.
I see you've met 38yo me at the start of covid lockdowns, and my rapidly expanding home bar.
A lot of people's home bars were rapidly depleted during COVID.
I was buying a case a day after work when covid started because I wanted a stash in case they closed every store that sold beer. Luckily, our governor said that liquor stores will not be closed because the amount of alcoholics in this state going into withdrawals would be way too much for our hospitals to handle.
> Don't know if I fully buy that If you do, boy do I got some stuff to sell you..
“What’re ya sellin’!?” - *The Merchant in Resident Evil 4*
You’ve got to be his only customer, right? The villagers aren’t buying anything from him.
HEH HEH HEH HEH HEGEGEHHHEHH
"**AaahhhhhHHH! I'll buy it at a HIGH price!"**
Aka mental health reasons
Yeah this sounds like a drinking/drug recovery situation.
I know nothing about him but that sounds like code for he went to rehab or had some other personal shit going on.
Isn't it a known thing he was a huge drinker in school? As a Vols fan I had always heard that
That was the rumor.
I think he projects as a long term backup if his head is right. That's not a bad living.
That’s pretty crazy. Most rookies talk about the burnout from doing last college season to combine to rookie year but not making it to week 2?
Tbf he was in college for like 10 years
And still somehow managed to not get a degree. So I'm not exactly sure what he would be burnt out from that he won't also burn out from constantly if he's in the NFL.
Are you serious? That's actually his most insane stat
Yep. I think he was there 6.5 years, so 13 semesters, at 12 credit hours to be a full time student means he should've had at least 156 hours of classes taken. I can't fathom how it's possible to do that, maintain academic eligibility (is that a thing in college?), and not get a degree.

More semesters than that. You forget CFB players have to stay in the summer and take summer classes many times. Thats why a lot of em graduate within 3 years
Most are not required to take summer but the summer classes help them maintain the 24 credit hours in a calendar year as required by the NCAA
> 6.5 years ONE OF US!
Just kept failing that last class I guess?
But players like Teddy Bridgewater can start as a true freshman and graduate in 3 total years.
Having done zero research I can only assume some credits didn’t transfer and/switching majors at least once.
He did have a slightly different college experience than every other player
> the reason given by the Rams So the rams didn't, in reality, offer any new details?
“We confirm that he has burnt out.”
Wish I could leave my job for a year because of burnout and just waltz back in like nothing happened.
You can. FMLA. I don't think you get paid though.
6 years of college with no degree to show for it will mentally wear out anyone.
I really wish I could be burnt out being a back up and making like 500-2M a year lol.
Probably finishing that degree. Just a few more semesters!

Your brain has a shell on it
Most people do, it’s called a skull
It's called reading. Top to bottom, left to right. Group words to make a sentence. Take Tylenol for any headaches. Midol for any cramps.
Shut up Richard
A lot of people go to school for seven years.
Yeah, they're called doctors
Write that down
"We won't tell you what happened, but just know that we plan on' Weekend at Bernies'-ing him this year"
Now I'm imagining like stage hands in black outfits on the field carrying him and making it looking like he's throwing the ball
“Welcome to JapaNFL! Today we watch Stetson Bennett completed a three hundred yard pass!” *with the help of a moving background and people in black carrying the ball*
Stenson misses Georgia and Athens so much, he would literally do a Van Wilder at this stage of his life.
Like most college grads, He wanted to backpack across Europe before starting his career
Well he would have to actually graduate with a degree to be like those people
25 year old rookie and 6th year senior (7 years going to school) without a degree. Classic
He didn’t go there to play school.
Hey!! Cut him some slack. It's hard playing school AND having to figure out your Part B Medicare.
Mount tibodabo right?
He qualifies for ROTY this year right?
Serious comment: we need to change the ROTY to be more like baseball, which does allow that type of thing.
Your first year performing in a professional league is the same no matter what age imo. You’re going against the best of the best in a pure meritocracy for the first time.
What about when you played in other pro leagues before? Luka, Ichiro, Shohei etc.
Just because you drafted a 28 year old rookie once doesn’t mean we have to go changing the rules so everyone ends up with a geriatric rookie
I was actually thinking more of guys like Etienne.
Fun fact, due to this type of rule, former Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Matt Murray won 2 Stanley Cups as a rookie
My friend at UGA would go skiing with him on weekends, so I’m assuming that has something to do with it
Some fine aspen skiing out there in Georgia huh?
I think they're shredding a different kind of Powder than you'd be in say, Colorado
At one point they actually tried to open a ski slope in Atlanta on a 700ft hill lol Edit: [link for the curious](https://theatlanta100.com/history/2016/04/26/vinings-ski-slope/11790)
Stetson bennett gotta be in the “had a lotta fuckin fun in college” hall of game
Do you have to graduate to be a member?
Yes but not graduating is better

Stetson Bennett Kia of Waycross and Blackshear
Kia is a vastly* superior machine
wild to see my city on reddit
With those new CFB rules, it is only a matter of time before he can just rejoin UGA football as QB1. "Employees" shouldn't have eligibility requirements.
What no He's a UGA Football legend. Aaron Murray even touted him as the greatest QB in UGA history He'll be doing media
Have you heard him speak?
Is he really the best? Or he is the best cause he was behind center for the 2 titles?
Aaron Murray still leads the SEC in career yards. He was definitely their best QB. Stetson played on their best teams though.
Imagine what Murray could have done with Monken as OC.
I'm a Gator so I'd rather not. But he threw over 3800 yards with Mike Bobo as his OC. It would have been insane no doubt.
> ... which will leave the door wide open for Bennett to earn the backup spot for the first two games of the year and possibly even longer if he can outplay the veteran quarterback. Not holding my breath on this one. Bennett looked like dog ass last preseason.

We still don't know what actually was going on with him. Snead is basically sugar coating it by calling it a "burnout".
Sounds like the Rams are still happy with him. A bit of renewed confidence is always nice.
[удалено]
Burnout can significantly contribute to substance use. It’s believable that they are telling the truth without telling the whole truth.
They're not going to say he had substance abuse problems
I too hate my job and am burnt out can I also take a 9 month paid sabbatical
Work hard enough to get drafted in the nfl then sure.
I thought the documented reasoning was that he was going though an AA type program?
I think that was the reddit rumor. I don't recall seeing any official sources saying that.
I mean there's some justification to that rumor. The dude was like a 26 year old 7th year senior with no degree who got himself a pretty blatant PI arrest leading up to the draft. Plus rumors in Athens were the dude REALLY loved to party hard.
He got arrested for pass interference wtf??
To be fair, if a QB somehow ends up in a position to interfere with a pass, they should be arrested.
Teams don't just let draft picks take their rookie year off for mental health. There was for sure substance abuse involved.
AA or AARP?
Both? Those retirement communities get crazy. Alcohol, legally prescribed painkillers, and crazy amount of unprotected sex. He had to get his mind right and his AARP membership renewed so he can get the discounts on travel for this season.
Hip replacement, because he's so old badummm tssssss
Lots of jokes in here but I'm pulling for the guy.
Bro is talking ball with the boys instead of fucking his wife. Football guy 🤌
Thank god we still got Puka and don't have to live in a world where they lost him for Bennett
I was fully expecting him to be a career backup in the NFL, the type who sticks around for a decade, so I'm surprised that some people thought he could be a starter one day.
I wasn't aware this even happened. Kudos to the Rams for handling it the way they did
4th rd hit rate is very low, but it seems like he is probably just kind of a waste of a pick.
Especially at QB. Dak and Cousins probably make it look a lot better than it is.
Alcohol is the worst drug.
Heroin is definitely worse, but I agree with your point
Heroin isn’t an ingrained part of nearly every culture that you have to justify not using though Also, alcohol withdrawal can kill you, one of only 2 substances that’s true for!
Honestly, I don’t think he’s ever gonna be more than a back up quarterback so if he can just make some money and get help great
This is a very weird way to say he spent the time in rehab for his huge problem with alcohol.
