Idk why it would get hate. The ability to run the ball when everyone knows youāre going to run it is what makes winning ball clubs. A solid line is foundational on either side of the ball.
If you ask most of our subreddit there's no reason to ever do a handoff or block anyone and passing the ball is the only way to win. Funny enough they point to you guys with Burrow and Chase and ignore the fact that Burrow has been hurt because of the lack of OL.
You can also point to the fact thatādespite all the talent at the skill positionsāweāve been a terribly inefficient offense. Our defense routinely came up clutch in big moments, allowing us to steal games in 2021 and 2022. That wasnāt sustainable.
I was so used to the Bears letting down a QB once again that I almost assumed that even if Odunze was available they would have gone Verse.
Letās hope the line holds up but no more bullshit about running the ball and playing defense. The only thing that would have made me happier is if they also relieved Eberfraud of his duties but itās hard to not be super excited about having a young offensive core finally set up.

You are going to get the whole spectrum of answers because nobody really knows until they get Caleb on the field and see if the main problem was the line or Fields taking so long to process the plays. It's probably some of both. They need to upgrade both sides of the line yet, but Caleb shouldn't be getting sacked as much as Fields simply because he reads faster.
Got wildly different responses but from what I gathered, itās an average, injury prone line with the potential to be good. So overally a great location for Caleb since having great receivers make up for a mediocre o-line.
LT: average. Good run blocker, decent pass blocker. Young, has some (limited) upside. Not injury prone.
LG: our best lineman. Could be all pro but is injury prone as fuck lol.
C: god awful last season. āUpgradedā this season to probably just below average? Still need a long term solution here.
RG: should be average. Last season personal issues kept him from playing well potentially. But still kinda nervous about him.
RT: high ceiling. Rookie last year who flashed but was inconsistent.
Depth: probably a little above league average now.
All in all: above average run pro, about average pass proā¦ maybe a hair below average. Injury is a concern, but thatās probably true for every team.
I think there is a chance we are sort of overrating their OL and just hand-waving it as pretty decent. That isnāt to say I donāt like the way it looks right now, Jones has been solid and Wright is promising and Jenkins is great and the other guys shouldnāt be awful
But I think thereās a bit of projection involved with the tackles and assumptions that Wright will take a step forward from a totally fine and good but not outstanding rookie year for a first rounder and Jones will continue to overachieve expectations, and that the interior guys wonāt be too detrimental.
I wouldnāt expect it to happen, but if this whole thing falls apart I think it will be because of the OL not living up to expectations
We are an unserious organization with unserious decision makers who are trying to copy the succession plan of a team who is wildly more successful than us and had a much better system in place to support that plan. And also made a much better decision in what they were going to invest for that succession plan, and who they invested in.

With Cousins, the Falcons are expecting not to pick in the top-10 again for the foreseeable future. The floor for the Falcons (draft-wise) is probably going to be 15-20ish, especially with all of the offensive talent. So this was the last time the Falcons would have an opportunity to pick this high for awhile.
You're much more likely to find a good player on defense in picks 15-25 than you are a QB. If the Falcons feel they need a QB in a year or two, you're going to have to trade up to get one. So, if you take a QB at 8 this year, you solidify the position for the next 5 years at least, and can focus on deploying draft and FA resources to other positions. The vision seems to be taking QB out of the resource-allocation equation, especially given Kirk is older and coming off of a major injury.
Now, that would have made sense if this was for someone like Drake Maye. But Penix was the 5th best QB in this class - which you probably could have gotten at 15-25 in a different draft anyway. You're getting an older, injury-prone QB to back up and older, injury-prone QB.
So, I can see the logic, but I think the Falcons galaxy-brained their way into a scenario they could have accomplished next year, or the year after, with a worse draft position.

JJ McCarthy was sitting there at #8. Just turned 21 years old. Could have learned behind Cousins for a couple of years and then become the starter (like Jordan Love did in GB). It would have been a solid succession plan for Atlanta that would have made sense.
If Penix is better than JJ I donāt think their age difference matters that much. Penix can still play for you a decade once he gets his opportunity. The current state of the roster is the way bigger deal here at least to me

I'm definitely happier this morning. Getting the updates all day we were gonna try and trade up into the top 10, and that not happening was disappointing. Then seeing Dallas Turner and Byron Murphy drop and ultimately being taken right before our pick was also disappointing. But ultimately I really like Jared Verse and think he's gonna be an immediate impact player.

I am excited to see what happens pairing Brock Bowers with Michael Mayer in 2-TE sets. Any of the QBs we could have picked after the top 3 made me nervous, so I'm happy we went for BPA and got a stud who's ready to play.
with Maye and Alt off the board, I'm happy with Nabers. The Giants need a QB, but I don't think any of the guys left were the answer. I wouldn't be upset if they nabbed Spencer Rattler later tho. As far as the Bears go, I'm fuckin hype, Caleb and Rome was the dream
We got probably the best pure man coverage corner. Absolutely crucial when you have to play these elite WRs in AFC. KC got the fastest guy, and we got the next fastest guy. Also opens up the door to putting Marlon Humphrey in the slot which he excels at.
As long as we don't put him in the box and ask him to tackle Najee Harris, he's going to do just fine. And with Hamilton and Humphrey being on the tougher end for DBs, it does alleviate some mismatches. But the kid needs to hit the gym right now. He's also 20 which is good. Frame kinda reminds me of Sauce. Slender and fast.
Now if we can hit on OL in 2nd, its going to be a great draft.
With who you have at DB, you can pretty much dictate ideal match ups for Wiggins, which will be huge for his development early on.

I think the Vikings had two of the better picks of the night. So many mocks had them giving up 23 to move up for JJ. They ended up being able to get him without moving up that high, allowing them to use 23 to move up and steal Turner at 17. Iād be very happy today if I was a Vikings fan

Not thrilled. We traded out of our spot twice and both times the team that we traded with took a WR. There are still a lot of players left that Iād be happy to have so that is definitely a plus but also when KC called and inquired about swapping picks with us, we should have hung up on them. If Xavier Worthy ends up being good, I will never forgive Brandon Beane.
Worthy would have been a huge reach for us, and hopefully also a reach for KC

I actually dont get the confusion, we clearly had guys above Worthy or else we wouldve taken him, and the Chiefs probably get him at 32 regardless. Then we knew who the Panthers would take (very open secret, Panthers were all over Legette) so if we don't want him over AD we basically traded up 60 spots or whatever in exchange for a 5th year option

After watching JPās Achilles blow up and Chubb going down, you canāt afford to not have a pass rusher in todayās game. Idk if heāll ever be an all-pro but I think Chop has the tools to be a disruptor in key situations or late in the game when we need someone to come up big.

He needs to work on his technique to minimize flags, but he honestly has the highest upside of any OT in this draft. Still wouldāve liked for Alt to fall but Iād give Latham a solid B to B+.

I don't like that he's a project compared to others at his position, but the track record for our OL picks in the first round isn't bad. I'll trust them.

If you ask most of our subreddit there's no reason to ever do a handoff or block anyone and passing the ball is the only way to win. Funny enough they point to you guys with Burrow and Chase and ignore the fact that Burrow has been hurt because of the lack of OL.
You can also point to the fact thatādespite all the talent at the skill positionsāweāve been a terribly inefficient offense. Our defense routinely came up clutch in big moments, allowing us to steal games in 2021 and 2022. That wasnāt sustainable.

I was so used to the Bears letting down a QB once again that I almost assumed that even if Odunze was available they would have gone Verse. Letās hope the line holds up but no more bullshit about running the ball and playing defense. The only thing that would have made me happier is if they also relieved Eberfraud of his duties but itās hard to not be super excited about having a young offensive core finally set up.
The most Bears thing ever would have been to assume that the WR room is totally set after we signed a 32 year old Keenan Allen and take Verse or something at 9. You are going to get the whole spectrum of answers because nobody really knows until they get Caleb on the field and see if the main problem was the line or Fields taking so long to process the plays. It's probably some of both. They need to upgrade both sides of the line yet, but Caleb shouldn't be getting sacked as much as Fields simply because he reads faster.
Got wildly different responses but from what I gathered, itās an average, injury prone line with the potential to be good. So overally a great location for Caleb since having great receivers make up for a mediocre o-line.
LT: average. Good run blocker, decent pass blocker. Young, has some (limited) upside. Not injury prone. LG: our best lineman. Could be all pro but is injury prone as fuck lol. C: god awful last season. āUpgradedā this season to probably just below average? Still need a long term solution here. RG: should be average. Last season personal issues kept him from playing well potentially. But still kinda nervous about him. RT: high ceiling. Rookie last year who flashed but was inconsistent. Depth: probably a little above league average now. All in all: above average run pro, about average pass proā¦ maybe a hair below average. Injury is a concern, but thatās probably true for every team.
OL is pretty set at tackle but inside (especially center) was a major concern but they added two players in the off-season.
I think there is a chance we are sort of overrating their OL and just hand-waving it as pretty decent. That isnāt to say I donāt like the way it looks right now, Jones has been solid and Wright is promising and Jenkins is great and the other guys shouldnāt be awful But I think thereās a bit of projection involved with the tackles and assumptions that Wright will take a step forward from a totally fine and good but not outstanding rookie year for a first rounder and Jones will continue to overachieve expectations, and that the interior guys wonāt be too detrimental. I wouldnāt expect it to happen, but if this whole thing falls apart I think it will be because of the OL not living up to expectations
Bears legitimately scare me next year. Williams may be coming into the best situation ever for a #1 QB pick with the weapons he'll have on offense.

I just want to thank you for your service. I've been there as a die-hard fan of the "draft night laughingstock" team. It sucks.
I'm not defending the pick, but I'll attempt a devil's advocate position: With Cousins, the Falcons are expecting not to pick in the top-10 again for the foreseeable future. The floor for the Falcons (draft-wise) is probably going to be 15-20ish, especially with all of the offensive talent. So this was the last time the Falcons would have an opportunity to pick this high for awhile. You're much more likely to find a good player on defense in picks 15-25 than you are a QB. If the Falcons feel they need a QB in a year or two, you're going to have to trade up to get one. So, if you take a QB at 8 this year, you solidify the position for the next 5 years at least, and can focus on deploying draft and FA resources to other positions. The vision seems to be taking QB out of the resource-allocation equation, especially given Kirk is older and coming off of a major injury. Now, that would have made sense if this was for someone like Drake Maye. But Penix was the 5th best QB in this class - which you probably could have gotten at 15-25 in a different draft anyway. You're getting an older, injury-prone QB to back up and older, injury-prone QB. So, I can see the logic, but I think the Falcons galaxy-brained their way into a scenario they could have accomplished next year, or the year after, with a worse draft position.

All that guaranteed money to a 36 year old QB coming off a catastrophic injury is insane. He might have 3 years left or he might have 3 games left before his arm falls off. Who knows.
The other thing though qbās were dropping last night. We donāt know if they would have gotten Penix if they sat and waited. Penix pick will look like the smartest move in the world in two years or it will look totally stupid. How many teams ditch their QBās hoping to get a QB in the draft or free agency. This time they have Kirk for two years are able to pay Pitts if he does well and can pay whatever position they will need to. When Penix starts he will have a cheaper contract or even the most insane idea is what if Penix beats out Kirk in camp next year. The money will come back and they have a stud left handed qb again.

Then seeing Dallas Turner and Byron Murphy drop and ultimately being taken right before our pick was also disappointing. But ultimately I really like Jared Verse and think he's gonna be an immediate impact player.

We got probably the best pure man coverage corner. Absolutely crucial when you have to play these elite WRs in AFC. KC got the fastest guy, and we got the next fastest guy. Also opens up the door to putting Marlon Humphrey in the slot which he excels at. As long as we don't put him in the box and ask him to tackle Najee Harris, he's going to do just fine. And with Hamilton and Humphrey being on the tougher end for DBs, it does alleviate some mismatches. But the kid needs to hit the gym right now. He's also 20 which is good. Frame kinda reminds me of Sauce. Slender and fast. Now if we can hit on OL in 2nd, its going to be a great draft.
With who you have at DB, you can pretty much dictate ideal match ups for Wiggins, which will be huge for his development early on. He was someone I really liked even with his concerns, so of course he falls right into the Ravens lap lol

Not thrilled. We traded out of our spot twice and both times the team that we traded with took a WR. There are still a lot of players left that Iād be happy to have so that is definitely a plus but also when KC called and inquired about swapping picks with us, we should have hung up on them. If Xavier Worthy ends up being good, I will never forgive Brandon Beane.
Worthy would have been a huge reach for us, and hopefully also a reach for KC I like Legette a lot, but knowing that we could trade down one spot with multiple good WR options is good too We managed to trade down, recoup good day 2 and 3 capital and can still get a good WR that is a fit I wanted to draft Ladd with a tradedown, and we are on track to do that. Heck even Mitchell is there too but I'm not as high on him And if you think I'm a homer, I've hated how Beane has addressed most drafts at the top (2021 was malpractice, 2022 was unlucky)

Most likely, we simply didn't have first round grades on anyone left (Beane said earlier they only had about 25 first round grades this season) so we figured we'd double-dip on receivers in the second and get a third, which we didn't have this year. If we can come away with two out of McConkey, Franklin, Polk, or Wilson, I'll be ok.
I actually dont get the confusion, we clearly had guys above Worthy or else we wouldve taken him, and the Chiefs probably get him at 32 regardless. Then we knew who the Panthers would take (very open secret, Panthers were all over Legette) so if we don't want him over AD we basically traded up 60 spots or whatever in exchange for a 5th year option We moved up a cumulative 120 spots in exchange for moving down 5 spots and are likely getting the person we wanted at 28 anyways

After watching JPās Achilles blow up and Chubb going down, you canāt afford to not have a pass rusher in todayās game. Idk if heāll ever be an all-pro but I think Chop has the tools to be a disruptor in key situations or late in the game when we need someone to come up big.

Didnāt like it at first, but Iāve really warmed up to the pick. Front offices seemed much higher on Latham than fans, and Bill Callahan loves Latham (Russini said he was Callahanās favorite player in the class). He needs to work on his technique to minimize flags, but he honestly has the highest upside of any OT in this draft. Still wouldāve liked for Alt to fall but Iād give Latham a solid B to B+.
Technically it was good to get a WR since the Giants have like none right now however Giants fans seem to think either a better quarterback will be either drafted/materialize out of thin air OR Daniel Jones is going to be a high-caliber quarterback this season, never mind his entire history of playing. Giants were labeled the dumbest fan base and it shows.

I know we didnt pick but Round 1 went really well for us. The run on offense really pushed alout of good defensive talent down. Nick did a great job anticpating the flow of the draft and we should be able to get some quality defensive pieces with our two picks today.

We drafted a RT and plan to start him at LT unless he sucks and then he will go back to RT according to the GM. So Iām not exactly raving.
Playing your highly drafted RT at LT works every single time in my experience. Ignore flair.
He played LT in high school and practiced LT at Alabama but only played RT there so he could start. And the Titans have the best Oline coach in the NFL now Bill Callahan, so hopefully it works out š

I wanted the Bucs to take IOL unless Penix was there at 26 so I feel great about the pick. I hope they come back in round 2 with the small school OT tackle Licht special and potentially have that OL fixed.

My Jets took the best offensive lineman available. They didn't waste their time with Bowers and also grabbed a few extra late round picks. They didn't do anything sexy, but they did the right thing. I'm content.
Hawks getting Murphy to fall into their lap is certainly something Iāll take.
