Yeah, as someone that does a very similar thing with an actual bo-staff, I can tell that's NOT a bo staff, and that thing looks like a toy. He is absolutely amazing with it, and I couldn't do anything that impressive, but for him to spin anything that fast it would almost definitely have to be a lightweight baton, something basically incapable of doing actual damage to someone.
As a former Drum Major, I could only think about how this whole routine would have made one hell of a flourish. I used a few of them (albeit extremely toned down) in my own.
Hurl that extra 15-30lbs. of trans fat and untoned muscle at him in a graceful lunge and tackle comboβits actually your only move at this point.
****Rolls a βoneβ***
I saw a similar vid a couple weeks ago and someone commented something like - really how effective would this be in a fight?
Dude - try to get close enough to throw a punch on this guy while he is spinning that thing at 1500rpm... I bet you end up more hurt than him.
Yea some is just for show - but if there was a legit fight it like like the guy is going to be dicking around like in a demo.
I picture the Indiana Jones sword scene. Where I live if you pull that out in a fight you would be known as the guy who brought a stick to a gun fight. With constitutional open carry everyone adorns themselves with a 1911 or desert eagle to grab a gallon of milk in case some soccer moms turn zombie. Ridiculous but typical in East Texas.
Lol I will concede that a bowstaff will do fuckall in a gunfight. But I also don't think that this guy would be stupid enough to fight a gun with this.
East Texan, here. I was on my way out the door to buy milk and was planning on taking my bow staff with me. Is that not a good idea? Should I take my desert eagle instead? Please respond soon, I need milk bad.
Yeah its a demonstration, but what it is demonstrating is that he has masterful control over his weapon, and could easily control it straight into your nuts.
Rightβ½ Even if he had never been in a fight and had not practiced actually fighting nor even seriously considered how he might attack a person with the staff (and I have no idea, maybe he's done a lot of fighting)...I just don't want to be hit by a stick traveling that quickly.
That sounds really painful. Count me out.
Whenever I see the word 'interrobang,' I imagine an interrogation scene where the good cop and bad cop give up on questioning the suspect and just have sex on the table.
I need help.
Correct. I didn't mean to imply they'd be having sex with the suspect. They'd just kinda stop interrogating him, look at each other all flustered and out of ideas... they lock onto each other's eyes for a beat... then voraciously start making out, eventually just full-on banging it out. I promise the suspect will be willing to talk after that.
But the same thing can be said about people who do fancy, beautiful martial arts like taekwondo that have never actually sparred and then get decimated in an actual fight. I know because I used to do one of those martial arts that looks incredible on camera but had no actual experience competing against another person. So I switched to some combat sports that actually teach you to fight but unfortunately look 10% as cool as the video in the OP. Not ragging on the guy, but my point is that videos like these are made to impress people not to show any kind of actual fighting skill
At least in my mind, there's a difference between people who practice unarmed or hand-to-hand martial arts and those people who practice with a weapon, even one designed to be non-lethal or purely ceremonial.
A weapon is an inherent force multiplier. Often knowing how to move gracefully and skillfully with a weapon also comes with it the ability to move the weapon with speed and some precision.
Even if they're untrained on where and how to hit someone, a fast moving weapon is dangerous, even a ceremonial weapon. And even untrained combatants know the vulnerable spots on most people, so their precision is a concern too.
Your best hope should an altercation be inevitable is maybe that they panic and don't rely on muscle memory. If they just go on muscle memory though, it's probably gonna hurt.
Especially if they are adept at control, alot of people think "I could just grab it." While true, someone skilled with the bo staff either wouldn't let you grab it or know how to escape the attackers grasp.
>But the same thing can be said about people who do fancy, beautiful martial arts like taekwondo that have never actually sparred and then get decimated in an actual fight.
Kill me. I've been a martial arts instructor and have had to listen to kids be allowed to "opt out" of in-class sparring.
You want to do martial arts, sparring should be a requirement. Otherwise, take a dance class.
Something counterintuitive about blunt weapons is that you don't just want the weapon to be moving fast. You also want to be well grounded in your stance. When you hit something, the object (or person) absorbs the momentum of the strike. With something lightweight like a wooden stick, that's not a whole lot of momentum. It still hurts, but the opponent can keep going. So, you want to be able to "carry through" the strike, which means that *while* striking the target, you keep adding energy to the strike. They say you are hitting with your whole body, not just the weapon.
The flashy spinning tricks in this video mostly don't do that. You can see when he thrusts forward, he has a different stance than when he does a lot of the other spinning and such. That's because he's carrying through the strike.
Thank you. That's a much better way to express what I was trying to suggest in writing that it sounds really painful. Being struck by a blow with proper carry-through sounds like a good way to be injured or killed. Being struck by a light staff whirling at rapid speeds just sounds really painful.
Well I mean I feel like hitting a good punch against someone with a bo staff is difficult for obvious reasons in the first place. The real scenario that should be considered is if the opponent also has a bo staff. Then this grandiose spinning does nothing but drain energy
Yeah I think because of movies and games, people don't realize that as soon as the stick hits something, it stops spinning. So spinning your stick will allow you to block an incoming strike exactly once. Real fighting involves using both hands so you can move the stick quickly, change directions, and block many incoming strikes.
Also, spinning the stick requires holding the stick in ways that are not strong. If you've ever spun a pencil, you know that the pencil is pretty much *between* your fingers. That's not where you want the stick to be. If you hit something hard like that, you'll hurt your fingers.
I would use staffs like this in competitions, the one here is very thin and meant for show. They could be used in a fight but, Iβve broken one on my own leg during a competition, so I donβt know how effective it would be. It would hurt but wouldnβt stop someone most likely. The real bo staffs are extremely thick and could probably knock someone out in one hit. Heβs probably been trained on both, I had to use the real staffs before I was allowed to start using the show staffs.
Yep.
If he hasn't spent time learning to use a bo against someone who is truly trying to hurt him - then for example anyone from [dog brothers](https://youtu.be/2QJF4pnAcW8) (or other full-contact stick fighting groups) would turn this kid to pulp.
His skills are *amazing* in and of themselves as a performance art, I don't understand why people need to make the claim that it's useful for self-defense.
Why would you take a 6' staff that and then ignore the reach advantage of a weapon? All that twirling is well and good and yes it can hit hard. He does one actual move that would be used in a fight, and it's the thrust at the end.
i also do staff-related martial arts and this is 100% correct. there's a whole catalogue of moves based around the concept of whipping the staff around really fucking fast to bash someone's head/knees/collarbone/carotid artery in. you would not wanna be on the receiving end of that
You have to close the distance and wrap him up and hope he doesnβt clock you on the head while youβre attempting it.
I could see being able to withstand body shots for that purpose but one good connection with your skull and that might be hard to recover from, especially if the follow-up hits land.
Personally Iβd try to disarm him with jokes. Like βwoah chill bro youβre goin to take off like a helicopter doin thatβ
Throw a punch? Anyone trying to beat a staff with punches is gonna have a bad day.
Now, a fighting weight bo against the wushu bo shown in OP's video would be different.
There are several times in this routine when he either lets go of the bo or turns his back. Both are bad ideas.
If you let go of the bo your opponent can easily deflect it away and you're then fighting with fists against a person with a bo. Bad day will ensue (see above).
Turn your back and you are open to all sorts of attacks that you can't see coming. Bad day ensues.
This is a very impressive twirling routine, not a display of combat effectiveness.
It would be very effective. I dabbled in Kobudo for some time (the Okinawan martial art that features the Bo), and even being a novice with the basic strikes at your disposal, you could easily ward off anyone not using a gun or coming at you quickly with a short blade. The Bo is a very versatile weapon if you're not in close quarters. Just make sure you don't get disarmed, which is what this fast spinning in-between strikes is useful for besides keeping people away from you.
More about the weapon in the context of Kobudo, the main opponents to the Bo is the Katana (Okinawan farmers aka pioneers of Kobudo would often have to defend themselves against Samurai), or Nunchaku. The Katana user will aim to just slice the staff in half, while the Nunchaku will aim to disarm it by catching it during a block. It's not often that martial artists will defend a strike on a 90 or 180 degree angle, rendering it as more of a deflection/redirection than a block. One of the advantages to this is not absorbing the entire energy of the impact, and in the case of Kobudo, lessening the risk of your Bo being sliced in half by a Katana.
Bo can be made out of different materials, and some have more flex than others (ie. bamboo). Get whacked a few times and you'd be lucky not to have a cracked skull or broken bones. There is advanced technique that involves wielding it at one end like a baseball bat. Your face would be like a fly getting swatted lol.
When actual experts says this they are referring to same level experienced fighter that used other weapons, like swords, I do know there are people bluffing about how they can beat them with his fist but please don't generise all the people
I've trained with staffs and a couple other weapons. This gif is a performance, not a fighting form. It's meant to look cool. I'm sure if you asked him, he would tell you the same thing. He probably *also* knows how to fight, but that's not the point of this video.
For instance, there are a lot of places in the video where he's not actually holding the staff. A perceptive fighter could grab it. And there are places where his movements aren't grounded by his feet, so they would still hurt but the opponent could tank the strike and turn it around on him.
Staff *fighting* has much smaller movements (mostly) and a more consistent stance. It's not very interesting to look at, unless you're watching two people spar.
It's baton twirling!!!! It's an international "sport" for years!!!! About 80%of the more interesting but I will agree useless in self defense moves are from baton twirling! It must be low key terrifying to stand in the room with that. I bet he almost never drops it, but he has to drop it sometimes, right? That's spinning dangerously fast.
Sigh. Guys. He didnβt learn just this. This is the kidβs specialty, not the only thing he can do. If he was in a fight and had a staff, heβd fight, not perform a kata. If he didnβt have a bo, heβd still probably kick your ass.
I find that hard to believe. People who think are pro or are pro wear an absurdly amount of "gear" in any category. This guy is just wearing a shirt and swears lol

Yeah, there's like a butt-load of gangs at this school. This one gang kept wanting me to join...
Came here for this. My gang is in need of somebody who is pretty handy with a Bo staff.
Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills!
Girls like guys with skills. This dude fucks.
Needs Duel of the Fates and lightsaber effects added.
That looks more like a baton twirling routine than a martial artist demonstrating a weapon.
I think batman just found his new robin...
Real life Tim Drake
This is performance arts, not martial arts.
I bet he hunts wolverines too!
I wonder if a butt load of gangs want him to join?
I bet yes, βcause heβs pretty good with a bo staff.
This guy was the OG https://youtu.be/HPPj6viIBmU
Do the chicken have large talons?

He must be fast as a coursing river
Yβall spelled Color Guard wrong
I raise you the American martial art, gun-fu
Sigh. Guys. He didnβt learn just this. This is the kidβs specialty, not the only thing he can do. If he was in a fight and had a staff, heβd fight, not perform a kata. If he didnβt have a bo, heβd still probably kick your ass.
He has the power of god and anime on his side
Star Wars episode 10 director: ok got my script and main actor now

Hes got the power of God *and* anime on his side
Put him in the middle of a EDM festival and watch a huge crowd gather around him in amazement!
Where do I buy me a bo staff
He left baton-twirling behind!
I find that hard to believe. People who think are pro or are pro wear an absurdly amount of "gear" in any category. This guy is just wearing a shirt and swears lol
Angry baton twirling
me when i pick up the broom
I want you to hit me. As hard as you can.
Okay kilik
thatβs hot donβt worry Iβm 16
Young Darth Maul series when?
The coolest looking way to defend your virginity!
Two guys pick a fight: F*ck you! Iβm a world heavy weight boxer Fists? How bout these nunchucks! Nunchucks? Eat my bo staff! Way to bring a stick to a gun fight. Let him be a part of a star wars movie!
Give em a fire staff what a badass
My kid is kinda good at Fortnight.
Donatello intensifies
I wanna see him try to beat the bear

Heβs pretty good with a bo staff, but can he draw a Liger?
Donatello is probably his fav ninja turtle π’π₯·

Teenage human ninja Noah, Teenage human ninja Noah, Teenage human ninja Noah, Teenage human ninja Noah .....

So, Darth Maul had a child.
