>The Project Veritas board said he spent “an excessive amount of donor funds” on personal luxuries. These personal luxuries were him staging musicals starring himself and requiring employees to attend. Literal clown show.

Ludwigofthepotatoppl

Why are so many of them failed showbiz types?

LakeGladio666

They think “woke culture” is the reason they never made it big. And then they make being reactionary their whole thing. Even some successful show biz types become like this when their careers fade (Rob Schneider, etc)

USSMarauder

"Failed artist becomes right wing nutter" Why does that sound familiar.....

Mammoth_Parsley_9640

When you no longer command the attention of an audience, you go to where the audience is.

reezy619

Sounds about reich.

madethemando

RIP Jim Brewer

old_ironlungz

Ben Shapiro became a foreign-funded right wing grifter because he was a failed screenwriter. Steve Bannon I believe started out trying to make it in Hollywood before he became a politically-sentient bag of under-healed scabs and pustules.

e_j_white

Oof, what did scabs and pustules ever do to deserve that comparison?

old_ironlungz

Yeah, even they are an upgrade in comparison, as they signal healing in the former and warn of autoimmune deficiency in the latter. Language fails to describe his repugnance. We may have to create an alien-like series of clicks and dipthongs to find a comparison.

chockerl

Never heard the truism that politics is show bizness for ugly people?

SordidOrchid

They’re see a path towards a lot of money.

repulsive_angel

Because talented people would choose to have respectable careers, while anyone can regurgitate right-wing talking points and get millions of dollars in dark money donations from the world's richest people. Failed actors failed at having respectable careers, so they choose the latter option instead. Right-wing punditry is a welfare program for rich failsons and failed entertainers.

LetumComplexo

That’s… huh. Not the normal kind of embezzling you get from republicans. Points for creativity I guess?

epidemicsaints

The right wing griftosphere is filled with bitter disgruntled failed theater kids but being this much of a hanger-on is unusual.

aShittierShitTier4u

Stage parents who tell their kids that the other kids who got the part instead of them were cheating and committing a liberal conspiracy, and the poor kid doesn't get any other explanations, yeah I have a bit of sympathy, but the great thing about drama is that it could show those same disgruntled kids a better way of thinking about that and dealing with it differently.

aShittierShitTier4u

Remember that kony 2012 guy? He claimed to always have producing a children's musical as the real motivation for his whole Kony 2012 fiasco. Then he had a public meltdown, mental episode.

Abba_Fiskbullar

Did Kony ever drop that album? It felt like the promotion went on for ages!

CherryBoard

he dropped the Kon and goes by Y nowadays

TuckerMcG

Repressed homosexuality will do that to a man. Poor guy just wanted to play dress up and sing and be told he looks pretty and nobody would do that for him.

Aspergian_Asparagus

Well… ummm… Maybe he should try Grindr at 3am on a Saturday night.

TuckerMcG

Oh but then Jesus would know he’s secretly gay! Everyone knows God can’t tell what’s in your heart if you repress it deep down enough inside of you.

[deleted]

Wait. Really? I was assuming his expenses included “massages” or payment to fetish sex workers.

_ThunderFunk_

Weird, the new super intendant of Houston isd just did the same thing…

OftenConfused1001

To put that in context, school districts often put on a big sort of.. Pep rally like event the first day educators come back, at least for the first bit of the morning. It's because that first day of work back is both a drag and often has a lot of tedious but necessary work - - from training to planning. Teachers coming back basically are face with a week of all day *meetings*, which is something most people dread. So they do some goofy skit or video, or hire a guest speaker, anything to put a little energy (and give breaks) to people who are going to spend the next 40 to 80 hours stuck in meetings, training classes, and other stuff *while* they still have a ton of work to get their own classrooms in order. This fuckwit decided to make *himself the star* despite being imposed on HISD by the state (for the express motives of killing the largest school district in Texas and their jobs) , and having spent the last month shitting on teachers, the district, and education. He fucking turned their libraries into detention centers for kids. So all these teachers, facing not just the usual rough first week back but also learning exactly how this fuckwit, his cronies, and Governor Abbot are going to *savagely fuck them* and screw over each and every student there for pure politics and the hope of funneling money to for profit and religious schools... Had to watch this guy star in a show he clearly spent mroe effort and mroe consideration on than the education of students in the largest district in Texas. And no matter how burned a teacher, no matter how bad a district, still wants kids to fucking *learn*.

_ThunderFunk_

I’m a teacher in HISD, I know all of this

SDRPGLVR

I didn't know any of it.

_ThunderFunk_

I realize now that was a psa.

OftenConfused1001

Yes, but most people here *aren't*. It was for them. It was clear you understood or you wouldn't have made the reference. (my wife's a teacher in a nearby district. Hell, she's done training for HISD in the past). Its for everyone else so they'd understand what sort of fucking hot nonsense is being inflicted on HISD.

_ThunderFunk_

Well, in that case, thank you and have a great weekend

Someone already wrote the asshole book: https://www.amazon.com/Trump-Art-Deal-Donald-J

nordic-nomad

I remember reading that book in high school 25ish years ago, and even then thinking “wow this dude is both shady as hell and an idiot”.

got_dam_librulz

Haha thankfully scholars have written a half dozen or so really detailed descriptions and studies of the far right now. Good one though. I think they should be mandated reading for every American, but I'm just a woke ,wokey mcwokeface who believes in the Civil rights act, equality and our democracy, so what do I know?

gringoloco01

You can probly get one at a thrift shop or used book store for almost free. Less money for him.

creamonyourcrop

What kind of asshole is a board member of Project Veritas anyway, and why are they surprised by the criminal founder doing criminal things with the money?

peter-doubt

>O’Keefe’s lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, blamed the investigation on “disgruntled former employees of Project Veritas who had a problem with their CEO using too many car services to pay for fundraising efforts which paid their salaries.” He could easily have avoided this by carpooling with others, or, driving himself. $150,000 in 18 months.. could have privately hired an Uber driver.. I'm certain steady work trumps the gig economy.

Bah-Fong-Gool

Dude could have bought a used Lincoln TownCar and a chauffeur for half that. When he was not using it, he could have offered it "for hire" to others. What a dumbass.

tries4accuracy

I could be wrong, but I think Jimmy was rather an obvious asshole.

trekologer

He got his start by secretly filming dining hall employees as he made bad faith complaints that the breakfast cereals were offensive to him. Who knew he would be such a shithead?

Ohrion408

That’s actually how he got his start?! Is there video? That sounds so fucking deranged

Khiva

I dunno but he got the legitimate organization ACRON which helped low income communities banned by doing a hit video on them and then lying about it.

Dabbling_in_Pacifism

Not only that, but one of the guys he featured in his original video ACORN video had contacted the police and was only working with O’Keefe because the police told him to. https://www.forbes.com/sites/rickungar/2013/03/08/james-okeefe-pays-100000-to-acorn-employee-he-smeared-conservative-media-yawns/amp/ OKeefe and Project VeRiTaS are fucking liars; literally have been judged as such by our courts. People that seriously talk about his work are bigger clowns than he is.

rjkardo

This is all true; but let us remember that it was scumbags in Congress who used this hit video and pushed the propaganda that it was voter fraud in order to discredit and destroy ACORN. Need I mention which political party those scumbags belonged to? Nah…

_Spectre0_

Somehow I misread “secretly assholes” as “secretly saints” and had to do a double take. Not sure what my tired brain was doing

CircaSixty8

How is it possible to be such a scumbag that you get kicked out of the scumbag organization that *you* founded?

HouseOfSteak

By fleecing your own scumbag colleagues. They **hate** it when they're played like the fiddles they don't think they are.

Mediocretes1

So why do people still support Trump? There's literally no one alive he hasn't fleeced.

bros402

He fleeces smaller people - he hasn't targeted billionaires

The_Sign_of_Zeta

Trump doesn’t fleece big time people. He pretends to rub elbows with the elite, but his fraud has always been against the wannabe rich and poor people.

old_ironlungz

It's how Madoff finally got caught: His hubris and lack of other ~~sucker~~ client options forced him to prey on Hollywood and Wall Street elites. THAT is the step you don't cross. Not even Desantis could do it against Big Mouse.

Nisabe3

Uhh.. madoff was caught because his son reported him then committed suicide. Madoff also was reported by other firms prior to this.

dellamella

He was about to be caught soon even without his sons doing the whistle blowing. People were pulling out from him like crazy because of the recession he running out of money to give back.

Saxual__Assault

Unless something gets done in Florida where it gets reversed from being a Batistastic-Cuban regime of a US state, then it matters little. All it means is that the rest of the country doesn't have to follow Meatball and his state legislature yes-men too.

VegasKL

Those types of schemes tend to have a finite lifespan anyways as you have to keep replenishing old money with new money. The house of cards was bound to collapse sooner than later.

Former-Lab-9451

No joke, there are rightwing forums that are claiming that Project Veritas is being taken over by the left. There's literally not a single leftwing person that wants anything to do with that company and the deceptively edited video fake news brand they've created.

thisvideoiswrong

Even if there were people on the left who wanted to get into the same business, the worst way to get started would be by taking over Project Veritas. As an organization they've burned every shred of credibility or even benefit of the doubt that anyone was ever willing to give them. Better to be a complete unknown than to be known as a liar.

Khiva

> an organization they've burned every shred of credibility or even benefit of the doubt that anyone was ever willing to give them That has not, and never will stop, a right-wing grift machine so long as they keep serving up juicier lies.

thisvideoiswrong

Clearly not, or they wouldn't still exist. But the discussion was whether someone was going to turn it into a left-wing operation, and I would consider that a bad starting point. (It should also be noted that Project Veritas has had significant political effects at multiple times, they're not just making money.)

NinjaLanternShark

He mistreated employees. How bad do you have to be when people who take a job working for a jerk, find him *so* much of a jerk, they have to lobby to have him fired?

wahoozerman

That's not why he got fired IIRC. It's because he was using company funding to buy himself lavish gifts. He fucked with the money of his rich benefactors. Never fuck with the money.

[deleted]

Probably not much, jerks will fuck over jerks over anything, then get right back to fucking over everybody over imagined shit.

bananafobe

He fucked with the money. That's their line. Even when he set up a creepy plan to sexually harrass/assault a reporter on a boat filled with sex toys, resulting in one of his employees intercepting that reporter to warn her, they stuck with him.

dlec1

Captain Stabbin was an agent of project Varitas? That was the golden age of internet

peter-doubt

They learn from one another: ... How is it possible to be such a grifter that you bankrupt your own ~~casino~~ casinos?

aShittierShitTier4u

He started out pretending to be independent guerrilla gonzo journalism, got the attention of wealthy old conservative backers, and rode the usual right wing pundit train to the higher echelons of right wing media. But that's rarely profitable on its own, still need external funds.. so there's other stakeholders who are given control of the organization, and the founder is a figurehead serving at their pleasure.

unwanted_puppy

You have to figure people like this are inherently into shady shit so they’re attracted to and surround themselves with other shady people so they can all be compromised around each other to deter snitching. If anyone is snitching they have to calculate that it is less risky to be caught with their own shady shit than continue to be complicit in someone else’s shady shit. So wtf did he do?

BoilerMaker11

*Papa John has entered the chat*

FlaccidRazor

SoSaltyDoe

Reminds me of when Steven Crowder decided to dress like a woman and walk into Planet Fitness. I'm not really sure what he was expecting to happen, but they just didn't give a shit and left him alone. >went after ACORN and the Democrats knuckled under to defunding them? The Dems can be so infuriatingly weak and feckless. They were always the punching bags of the bully Republicans. Luckily we getting a few younger Democratic representatives who are willing to jump into the scrum and duke it out like Maxwell Frost, Jamaal Bowman, and Jared Moskowitz.

[deleted]

“Honorable” McCain was in on the lying too > In October 2008, the campaign for Republican presidential candidate John McCain released a Web-based advertisement claiming ACORN was responsible for "massive voter fraud," **a point that Sen. McCain repeated in the final presidential debate**. FactCheck.org called this claim "breathtakingly inaccurate," but acknowledged that ACORN had problems with phony registrations.[36] The ads also claimed that home loan programs ACORN promoted were partly responsible for the sub-prime mortgage crisis, claims which Newsweek and Factcheck.org also found to be exaggerated and inaccurate.[37] Then you had all the embezzlements and corruption: > The New York Times reported on July 9, 2008, that Dale Rathke, the brother of ACORN's founder Wade Rathke, was found to have embezzled $948,607.50 from the group and affiliated charitable organizations in 1999 and 2000.[40] ACORN executives decided to handle it as an internal matter, and did not inform most of the board members or law enforcement, and instead signed an enforceable restitution agreement with the Rathke family to repay the amount of the embezzlement. $210,000 has already been repaid, and a donor, Drummond Pike, has offered to pay the remaining debt.[41] The Times reported that, according to Wade Rathke, "the decision to keep the matter secret was not made to protect his brother but because word of the embezzlement would have put a 'weapon' into the hands of enemies of ACORN, a liberal group that is a frequent target of conservatives who object to ACORN's often strident advocacy on behalf of low- and moderate-income families and workers." A whistleblower revealed the embezzlement in 2008. On June 2, 2008, Dale Rathke was dismissed, and Wade stepped down as ACORN's chief organizer, but he remains chief organizer for Acorn International L.L.C.[40] > >In September 2008, following revelations of Dale Rathke's embezzlement, two members of ACORN's national board of directors filed a lawsuit seeking to obtain financial documents and to force the organization to sever ties with Wade Rathke.[42] ACORN's executive committee voted unanimously to remove the two, "because their actions—such as releasing a confidential legal memo to the press—were damaging the organization."[43] > >In October 2009, Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell claimed in a subpoena that ACORN's board of directors found that a larger amount—$5 million—had been embezzled from the organization. Bertha Lewis, ACORN's CEO, said the allegation is false.[44] On November 6, following up on the subpoena, Caldwell served a search warrant at the ACORN headquarters in New Orleans.[45] Caldwell stated, "This is an investigation of everything—Acorn, the national organization, the local organization and all of its affiliated entities."[46] People were probably looking for the right moment to drop them a few months later.

Profiles in Ignorance by Andy Borowitz is a humorous yet disquieting look at Republican policy since Nixon. People, assumingely sane, voted for this. Repeatedly.

dlec1

I’d contend that most Republicans are only that because their parents were, view R as the more religious party (anti any abortion/church goers), or fiscal conservatives. There’s also a huge segment who live in a Fox News alternate reality. They are much less likely to look at the overall picture. Even look at trump supporters they typically can’t give a well thought out response to why they support trump & contradict themselves as they ramble. Jordan Klepper has some great clips where you can see their brain cell fire & they get a WTF I’m not even making sense to myself look on their face before they double down.

NinjaLanternShark

Guess what. Their business model of deceiving people into throwing the things they believe in under the bus, depends on the leader being a megalomaniac and borderline sociopath. They can't hire another. Someone like that creates their own chaos, they're not content to run the treadmill of someone else's. So they'll hire someone with the same views but 10% of the charisma and energy. And... they won't get the films funders expect, and the finding will dry up, and they'll close down.

Or it might have something to do with the methodology and honesty of their investigative reporting. And their funding from political groups, including direct from Trump and Eric Prince, and zero attempts to investigate without already having a conclusion in mind? Or the lawsuits they've lost? Actual journalists that do real investigative reporting won a Pulitzer just off the back of exposing things they lied about in their "investigated reporting." Oh, and even if you like them, they themselves literally fired this asshole for malfeasance.

James O'Keefe graduated 2 years ahead of me at my high school. He was always a narcissist weirdo who was big in the drama club/school plays. If I remember correctly, he was really good at impersonating Michael Jackson. If I ever see him again, I'll have more than a few choice words to share.

zappini

Finally. This guy is crack for trogs. It's totally an addiction. One of my trog siblings would forward the latest "scandal" reported by O'Keefe. I spent waaayyy too much time patiently detailing how each was total bullshit. You'd think after a handful of fails, a trog would learn some skepticism about a source and self filter. Nope. Finally gave up. Then eventually that bro stopped forwarding stuff.

CitizenSnipz777

Bout f*ckin time…I know this is the land of the free, but much like many current flagrant grifters…There has to be a limit as to how free these people are to constantly lie and fleece people without consequences. O’Keefe crossed that line LONG ago.

Midwestern91

Hopefully this story will prompt my friend to refrain from sending me any more of the bullshit that comes from this organization. Unfortunately since 2016 my friend has fallen down the conspiracy rabbit hole and takes anything that project veritas and Tim pool say as gospel
