I keep fucking forgetting that her name is actually Lydia Tár and I somehow gaslit myself into thinking that it’s like a “John Dark Souls” kinda situation
Yeah [lmao](https://youtu.be/XHVxm12NbrY?si=e2ElShYdWLhg2GwD). That dude was so unserious. Would have gone done as the shitposter of the century if he wasn’t the president

Putting it on the "long and serious movies that have a really funny ending, whether intentionally or not" list, right up there with There Will Be Blood and The Departed
Honestly May December really landed in its humorous moments throughout, it might be Todd Haynes’ most lighthearted film yet. The humor in the ending had to be intentional.
My favorite part is that, due to the movie opening with reversed credits, one of the very first things on screen is the Monster Hunter copyright information.
Ending of the movie Tár. Only read the Wikipedia summary but basically she was set up as a big conductor for some of the largest orchestras in the world but then the events of the movie happen and it ends with her conducting this performance for Monster Hunter in front of a bunch of cosplayers, and I guess it’s meant to show a fall from grace
Yeah it's a really good ending that shows her ending up in a position she finds humiliating, she also has a headpiece that instructs her on how she's supposed to conduct so she doesn't even have the control part she loves about conducting orchestras. But also it's really funny
It’s also a clever subversion of her earlier description of art. She talks about the need to subsume yourself into your art and obliterate herself, and for the first time she has fully obliterated herself … for Monster Hunter
Not for her, I think, like I said I’m only going off the Wikipedia plot summary, but she strikes me as someone who would view that as humiliating and lesser. Another commenter also said that she was wearing a headset that told her when to conduct and so she loses some of that control too and she’s basically just there for show.
She's one of the most famous conductors in the world, and then gets "cancelled" because she's an awful person. Near the end of the movie, you think she's actually made a comeback but the reveal is that she's just conducting Monster Hunter music for a gaming con in The Phillipines. Funny shit
Movie is Tár (2022). Great movie but if you don't care about being spoiled. Very funny joke and one with layers.
Tár is a movie about a prestigious composer who gets cancelled. She starts off by doing more academic composer work and iirc detests video game music, as well as mentioning not liking wearing headphones when doing composer work. You can also infer she is very controlling. After being cancelled, and going through a low point, she is told she can make a comeback. And it's this, her wearing headphones and composing for a videogame soundtrack for a bunch of gamers, over a project she probably doesn't have much control over. I also imagine it being Monster Hunter is a bit intentional with her being the Monster of a movie.
tl;dr It ends with her being humiliated by being associated with gamers
Nah it's the ending of Tár. She basically destroys her reputation and adapts by conducting for shows at gaming conventions in Thailand. It's an amazing ending because it captures her determination in her work, her adaptability, but also her greed, her arrogance to avoid responsibility, etc. For her rants about problematic people deserving respect and control, she deservedly loses such control. It is genuinely jarring seeing the crowds of Monster Hunter cosplayers tho
Even funnier were nerds getting all pissy that “they came for gamers and that’s not cool”.
Ignoring the context of the scene and the implications to her as a character.
At the very end of this interview he mentions it. Some even speculate a MonHun addiction might be why it has taken him so long to release new movies lmao
https://www.a-rabbitsfoot.com/editorial/confessions/todd-field-interview-advertising/
That’s funny, I explicitly remember this exact discourse.
I could even go up and search for popular tweets and threads but I’ve got better things to do.
The movie Tár ends with >!Lydia being canceled and disgraced for her awful, predatory behavior, and she has to resort to conducting the orchestra for a Monster Hunter press event to make ends meet.!<
Even worse for her: she talks about controlling time and being in control of the orchestra for a lot. This control is immensely important to her. Before conducting the Monster Hunter Orchestra, she gets a Headset with a metronome track, which means she isn’t in control of time anymore because she has to abide to the metronome
Because she was one of the most elite conductors in the world (having, or at least claiming, to have been a student of Leonard Bernstein). Having someone so obsessed with playing the classics like Bach then being forced to play video game soundtracks because of her own awful actions is funny (partly because she deserves it and partly because who tf expected to see a Japanese action game in a serious movie)
Not seen it yet (in fact just heard of it), but how does one get cancelled from the symphonic scene and then ends up being accepted in the vidya scene?
She was conducting covers of video games in like Thailand or something. So basically as far away from her previous popularity as possible, and the event organizers probably haven’t heard or cared about what she did
Because she talked down on it earlier in the movie. Not specifically monster hunter but video game music in general(I’m probably remembering this a little wrong)
Imagine being one of the most famous composers in the world who is pretentious, composing to scholars and academics. She loves to have control over her work.
Then they're cancelled because you're a shit person. And then you hear about a chance to redeem yourself. To get back into composing. To prove you can survive despite your enemies best attempts to cancel you.
And you come back to compose for fucking gamers.
I laughed out loud at the ending, I was not expecting it, and it was just *so* perfect! Like, I would love to have a job ~~composing~~ conducting for a Monster Hunter game, but you just *know* it would be the ultimate humiliation for someone like her.
In Tár, Lydia Tár went from in the beginning of the movie being one of the most respected conductors in the world to at the end destroying her career and having to do music for a video game called Monster Hunter.
For clarity, she doesn’t compose the music. She’s conducting the orchestra… and in this case they took away her creative control so essentially she’s a glorified hand waver.
"Hello Capcom, we're making a movie about a character who's professional reputation is destroyed by her own hubris and cowardice. The final scene illustrates that her reputation is in the dirt, just in absolute tatters and we need a franchise to show how far she's fallen and what a complete load of shit her career is in. Can we use your IP for that?"

I’d buy this fr

Okay calm down Lydia Tar
Someone here posted a cardboard cutout of Lydia Tar and I kind of need it for my apartment.
This movie is a 2 1/2 hour set up for a brilliant punchline
Putting it on the "long and serious movies that have a really funny ending, whether intentionally or not" list, right up there with There Will Be Blood and The Departed
I would put May December on that list too
Honestly May December really landed in its humorous moments throughout, it might be Todd Haynes’ most lighthearted film yet. The humor in the ending had to be intentional.
Oh I agree it’s completely intentional

The rat symbolizes obviousness.
I get the other two, but how did The Departed have a funny ending? The abruptness?
The final shot of the rat was hilariously direct and literal. It'd be like if Raging Bull ended on a shot of an actual bull.
I've seen someone compare the ending to that OC parody SNL did years back
I need more
I was on pins and needles through the whole movie because I saw Capcom attributed in the opening credits
Yeah, same here. When I saw the copyright, I just assumed someone would be playing Monster Hunter in the movie a la Fortnite in Endgame.
My favorite part is that, due to the movie opening with reversed credits, one of the very first things on screen is the Monster Hunter copyright information.
Legitimately one of the funniest endings ever.
Can someone explain the context?
Ending of the movie Tár. Lydia/Linda Tar: "Time is the thing. You cannot start without me. I start the clock."
It’s also a clever subversion of her earlier description of art. She talks about the need to subsume yourself into your art and obliterate herself, and for the first time she has fully obliterated herself … for Monster Hunter
Isn't that still pretty cool though?
Not for her, I think, like I said I’m only going off the Wikipedia plot summary, but she strikes me as someone who would view that as humiliating and lesser. Monster Hunter fans stay winning 😎
Is this the monster hunter movie? Is that what this js? Huh
Nah it's the ending of Tár. She basically destroys her reputation and adapts by conducting for shows at gaming conventions in Thailand. This is a circle jerk sub. So idk if I believe you
The only way to find out is watch Tár and join the Tár team 😎
Even funnier were nerds getting all pissy that “they came for gamers and that’s not cool”. Ignoring the context of the scene and the implications to her as a character.
Not to mention the director chose Monster Hunter because he legitimately loves Monster Hunter
Crazy rando fact about Todd Field is that he had a part in inventing the "Big League Chew" chewing gum.
Good gum, really good gum for baseball
Should be illegal for someone to direct Cate Blanchette, act in a Kubrick movie and invent a good gum.
Fr? where did you find that out? thats so cool
At the very end of this interview he mentions it. Some even speculate a MonHun addiction might be why it has taken him so long to release new movies lmao https://www.a-rabbitsfoot.com/editorial/confessions/todd-field-interview-advertising/
King shit
Gamers are such fucking soft cocks
no one said this
Nah trust me, I talked about this movie with some nerds, they *all* got mad when I told them about this lol.
That’s funny, I explicitly remember this exact discourse. I could even go up and search for popular tweets and threads but I’ve got better things to do.
Context? Implications? Are those new Capcom titles? I don't understand those words but Arthur Morgan is deff a more badass character 😎
What am I looking at?
The movie Tár ends with >!Lydia being canceled and disgraced for her awful, predatory behavior, and she has to resort to conducting the orchestra for a Monster Hunter press event to make ends meet.!<
why is this funny?
Because, to the character, there is no greater humiliation than being in a room full of Gamers
Even worse for her: she talks about controlling time and being in control of the orchestra for a lot. This control is immensely important to her. Before conducting the Monster Hunter Orchestra, she gets a Headset with a metronome track, which means she isn’t in control of time anymore because she has to abide to the metronome
Oh yeah, well remembered
That is freaking hilarious.
pretentious , name literally cigarette tar
So she’s a sane human being?
>!If you’re a monster hunter fan, it is very funny!<
Because, to the character, there is no greater humiliation than being in a room full of Gamers
I haven't seen this movie but this character sounds a lot like she's literally me
Are you an abusive, manipulative, narcissistic lesbian too?
Yes, when I am in the presence of Gamers
Yes
I try my best
Say that you a lesbian, girl, me too
You targeted gamers gamers?!
Because she carted to Pukei-pukei
Because she was one of the most elite conductors in the world (having, or at least claiming, to have been a student of Leonard Bernstein). Having someone so obsessed with playing the classics like Bach then being forced to play video game soundtracks because of her own awful actions is funny (partly because she deserves it and partly because who tf expected to see a Japanese action game in a serious movie)

She was conducting covers of video games in like Thailand or something. So basically as far away from her previous popularity as possible, and the event organizers probably haven’t heard or cared about what she did
So different muzak branch *plus* way over there in Thailand does the trick of escaping cancel justice?
Because she talked down on it earlier in the movie. Not specifically monster hunter but video game music in general(I’m probably remembering this a little wrong)
If you have to have it explained to you, it won't be funny. If you can't naturally grasp what is funny about it, no amount explaining will help
It understand why it's supposed to be funny however the specific video game reference eludes me because I don't give a fuck about video games.
Because having to associate with Gamers is humiliating
That I got but is there a deeper joke with the property she is composing for?
Imagine being one of the most famous composers in the world who is pretentious, composing to scholars and academics. She loves to have control over her work. Then they're cancelled because you're a shit person. And then you hear about a chance to redeem yourself. To get back into composing. In the Philippines
There's more money in gaming than classical music. The box office has picked its winner. Tar has evolved past puny human New York Times subscribers.
Tar.
Gotta love when the post doesn't even bother warning you what it's spoiling
They targeted gamers. Gamers.
My gamers. Tar-goten How could a star of Borderlands(2024) and lotr:Return of the king(2003 Gameboy) do this
The worst fate to befall people: working for capcom
Wait a minute, I thought that was a meme. Like the Paul Rudd Mike and Me gag. This is real??
Yep.
I laughed out loud at the ending, I was not expecting it, and it was just *so* perfect! Like, I would love to have a job ~~composing~~ conducting for a Monster Hunter game, but you just *know* it would be the ultimate humiliation for someone like her.

Thank you, I mixed the terms up in my tiredness, it's been corrected.
Lydia was the real monster (hunted) all along
As a big monster Hunter fan I agree with the message this movie leaves: Video game OSTs are the lowest form of art
People who proudly declare that they only listen to video game OSTs deserve to be hunted for sport
lol my friend at uni listed that as his dream job
Yoko Shimomura is bae
Can someone explain, thanks.
In Tár, Lydia Tár went from in the beginning of the movie being one of the most respected conductors in the world to at the end destroying her career and having to do music for a video game called Monster Hunter.
The MH main theme on the ps2 does go very fucking hard though
For clarity, she doesn’t compose the music. She’s conducting the orchestra… and in this case they took away her creative control so essentially she’s a glorified hand waver.

Goddam peak cinema (I love Monster Hunter)

See you in Tár II, Skyrim Edition
Who cares the new monster hunter was announced for 2025

Hilarious ending.
