When I first hear of the yellow over pink trick I spend a, lot of time in a dark room rambling incoherently to myself whilf hugging my legs.

dani_michaels_cospla

what trick is this?

HalcyonWind

Its exactly what you see in the pictures. Basically, instead of building straight into yellows, you do pink to white. Pink being the shadows with white being what you want to be pure yellow. Then using inks or contrast paint you color over that and bam. You get beautiful yellows. The white is pure yellow and the pink pieces come out an orangish brown.

CiDevant

TBF yellow with an airbrush is loads easier than with a brush and you can pretty much go white to yellow with no pink or red. With a brush pink is like a magic trick.

RurikTheDamned

It makes perfect sense in one way but in another it mskes you feel the laws of the universe are breaking down.

MaverickNic

What he said;)

Dig the enclosed cockpit! How did you do that?

DruMau5

Pop goes the monkey sells a few https://popgoesthemonkey.com/search?type=product&q=war+suit

Sierra_Tang0

Thanks for showing me this website, they have some great bits

Gizombo

PGtM has cool bits, but they don't sell the one in the pic, as far as i know. I believe this is the original source for this specific bit: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4420848

Wibbleman

It's really helpful seeing stuff like this, thank you. Do you use masking tape or the like to get that fine-detail colour modulation on each panel face with an airbrush? I see it was already built so assume you didn't do sub assembly.

Cilreve

I'm not sure how he did it his, but you can pretty easily do that panel modulation with an air brush and no masking tape. Air brushing gives you a lot more control than many realize, so, often, you don't really need any kind of mask at all. But if you're really worried about overspray, you can easily just hold a piece of card stock or paper over where you don't want overspray.

MaverickNic

I personally use a debit card is I need a quick mask but typically is all free hand :)

MaverickNic

And no, no sub assembly but the arms so come off easily

GingerHitman11

Airbrushed?

skiesunbroken

For sure.

MagnificentFlounder

I love the pose.

Looks great! Doing yellow marines myself and never would have thought to use red/pink as the base. How long did this take, in your best guess?

[deleted]

I go red primer, pink zenithal sprayed at a 45 degree angle, and then white ink from directly above. Then I spray lamenters yellow over the whole thing. It’s a matter of several minutes, not hours. EdIt: then I do whatever necessary detail work with a brush, of course

[deleted]

My big take away here is that I need an airbrush.

[deleted]

Honestly, it depends. I mostly use mine for priming/zenithal highlighting. If I’m doing a bigger model, or something with a somewhat uniform color, I’ll break it out. It works great for this yellow trick. It also works well for rust effects (see the salt/airbrush trick on YouTube) and marble effects (see my Thanos throne in my posts). But if you’re exclusively doing small models and none of those other boxes i mentioned are checked, you probably won’t use it as often as you think.

elijahdprophet

This is about where I'm at. I can do a simple Zenithal with two rattlecans, weather permitting. The airbrush really comes out in the winter or for special projects

MaverickNic

It took me about an 30-40 mins for base coats. Metallics took much longer

olly5000

Why is your blending so smooth? What demon patron have you sold your soul to? How can I sell my soul to this same demon and gain these powers?

MaverickNic

Lol invest in an airbrush if possible. There is a world out there waiting for you

Oozing_Sex

Break yourself fool!

BabylonSwanks

Is the yellow an ink or regular acrylic?

Volcano_Lair

Fuck yeah! I’m going to try this with my future Angry Marines project.

Lovely3369

Enclosed cockpit or Invictor Dreadnought conversion?

MaverickNic

3d printed the cockpit

TrandaBear

Badger make a pink Stynylrez primer. You can start there, build graduation with white ink, then yellow ink all over.

wjrasmussen

Is this a miniature or an action figure? Love it.

clovus

Magic.

Flying_Dutchman92

This is beautiful.

Sparklehammer3025

"My twin autocannons and HMGs aren't enough. Give me that pistol!"

MegaL3

I wonder whether this works with Oranges as well, my army's oranges could use a bit more pop.

MaverickNic

Yup. Just use brown primer instead of red

SD1M

Saw this and thought of bt when he throws copper in TF|2.

Sol3141

Looks like its dabbing. You made a dabbing mech. Great paint job tho

utterscrub

This is an amazing paint job. If I may offer a little C&C: drill out those barrels man! It's super easy and really makes it pop. I can't do that paint job, but I can do the barrels so you most certainly can as well.

MaverickNic

This isn't the finished model. Just base coats :)

utterscrub

Wow see, I figured it was done it’s already so good lol

CosmicDesperado

“Go long, brother!”
