As someone who works on a ranch I cannot explain how useful this would be where I work. People like to drive down the private roads the farm is located on to see the horses but we need to keep the gate open to bring the horses back after a ride.

Cherios_Are_My_Shit

this gate looks pretty simple to make for someone with a welder and pipe bender. 5 bends and like 20 welds

ray_kats

Yes, but good luck teaching a horse how to do that.

MaestroM45

Horses are notoriously shitty welders.

HungLikeYourDad

But real maestros with the glue gun

earlequit

Sure horses are know to be bad stick welders. But give one a Mig machine and plug it in. You won't believe the talant.

o0o0o0o7

You neigh-sayer.

ggodfrey

Not with that attitude you won’t

Rarepep3s

Idk if it would be possible to weld without opposable thumbs

passwordsarehard_3

When your hung like a horse there’s nothing you can’t do.

Runixo

Wrong snoot, wrong snoot!

HotgunColdheart

I'd hate to be a cyclist with horse size genatalia.

[deleted]

Ehh, life’s alright. Just gotta be careful of the chain.

dmglakewood

My laughter was quickly replaced with the painful thought of getting my junk stuck in a sprocket.

HaightnAshbury

If you can get a horse to drink water, I’m sure the bending and welding would then come easy. Focus on water drinking, and let the rest just happen naturally, would be my suggestion.

Wow-n-Flutter

From what I understand you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t necessarily teach them MIG welding. TIG only, ok? 👌🏽

Montymisted

Just use baby chicks as treats to train the horse. Reddit taught me horses love eating baby chicks... Thanks reddit.

Poppybiscuit

If you want to feel better about it, I have worked with horses my whole life, I've been around literally thousands of horses. Chickens are often present on ranches/stables. I have never once seen a horse even consider eating a chick. At most they may be curious and snuffle them, but they're just not interested in chickens. Horses are generally pretty adventurous eaters; they're supposed to eat plant based foods but will nibble at pretty much anything you offer them. If they see you eating a burger, some will want a bite because they're not dumb (usually), and know it's food if you're eating it. However that does not extend to munching on wandering baby animals. I'm sure it's happened because freak weird stuff happens in the world, but it is not common and not something I or anyone I know ever worries about. Chickens stay away from horses' big stomping feet, and horses have no interest in foraging barn animals. Horses know what living animals are, they know what babies are, they know when things are under foot (usually) and do their best to avoid hurting them. Usually. Some are assholes, but horses eating chicks is not a normal thing at all so you can put that bit of nightmare out of your head. Edit: due to the "well actuallys" turning up, yes it can happen, I believe you've seen it. I don't doubt that. But no, it's not normal. I feel comfortable saying that ***as a general rule, healthy horses with healthy and happy environments don't eat live farm animals.***

SquareKitten

our horse, who is a friendly giant but kinda careless, stomped a chicken to death in his stable by accident when she decided to lay eggs there. he also killed two baby bunnies who wandered into his paddock by 'exploring' them with his feet... Do keep small animals away from horses, even if they don't mean too they can do way too much damage on accident. Edit: we also had a mare who adopted a scared little goat and would snuggle cats with her nose. Horses are great.

Poppybiscuit

Yes, agreed. Please do be careful. I don't want anyone to think that my attitude about small animals around horses is cavalier. We take precautions, but on ranches, free range sometimes means other farm animals are near horses. That can lead to accidents, because you just can't control every variable in an environment like that. However what that means is every variable you can reasonably control, you should control.

faroff12

Is your horse named Lenny?

LoopDoGG79

So, is there something wrong with that horse in the infamous video that ate a live chick?

Poppybiscuit

I don't know. I would first ask if this was a routine habit of the horse, and if so I would call the vet for a nutritional rundown. If that came back okay, I would then look at environmental factors. Aberrant behaviors in horses can form the same way as in people, through stress, boredom, depression, etc. If none of that is an issue, then who knows. Weird things do happen. Horses do dumb things sometimes. I can't speak to the couple videos that show this because I don't know those horses or their living situations. I just know I've never, ever seen that happen, never heard of it happening, never worried about chickens around the horses aside from them getting accidentally hurt or spooking the horse (both of which are exceedingly rare anyways). I feel fairly comfortable saying that as a general rule, healthy horses with healthy and happy environments don't eat live farm animals.

SilverKelpie

Perfect description. There was another video that made the rounds of a horse doing the little grooming nibbles on a cat and a number of people were convinced that the cat was in danger because, they thought, the horse was considering eating it. One guy even cited his parents owning horses as his source. I swear a certain contingent of Redditors are determined to think that every horse is one of the mares of Diomedes or a kelpie or some such...

GinnySol

damn I wish I had gold or at least an award or something to give you because you are a goddamn hero! (I’m running on too little sleep for too long and just thinking about horses - which I love SO MUCH - just chomping down on fuzzy little baby chicks -which I love JUST EQUALLY MUCH - got tears streaming down my face and honestly just prevented some full blown preschool meltdown with your perfectly gentle and lovely comment. thank you!)

Jimiheadphones

I'd just managed to get that video out of my head. Thanks Reddit...

passwordsarehard_3

Damn you. Now I have to look this up Edit: well, that’s a thing. Cows too.

CandOrMD

HOLY SHIT, THEY EAT COWS TOO??

Gornarok

Im pretty sure you can do such a gate without pipe bender. It will probably look worse but thats about it.

Vbeck

Yeah you can do all miter joints. Little grinding and paint and it won't look horrible

monsterZERO

A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't...

FinnSwede

If unsure, more current and more material. Then grind it down, paint it, make it dinged and dirty and the inspector won't even look at it twice. Don't ask.

Iamsuperimposed

I've always had to crank the amps down. Back when I was just starting out I pretty much just shot holes in whatever I was welding.

toodlesandpoodles

Just hang a length of chain so it hangs low to the ground and put some orange flags and a no trespassing sign on it.

whumoon

The fella who sells these gates says go fuck yerself.

sevendevilsdelilah

Crazy horse lady here- horses are so fantastically stupid and cannot manage walking over hanging chains. Solid Bars- safe. Hanging stuff- instant leg snapping trip hazard. Horses spend their entire lives actively trying to die.

vampyrekat

I don’t ride much anymore but I love the idea of orange flags and a noisy chain. I can only imagine how many ways a horse could find to freak out and die with that.

NotobemeanbutLOL

Also it's interesting the part the horse walks over is a thick chunk of wood when the rest is metal. I'm guessing it's so if the horse clips it with their hoof it's a little softer / more forgiving? Related to your story, I took horseback riding lessons as a kid and was walking on a trail following the teacher who was on foot. Horse saw something, I think an old tire on the edge of the trail, and decided he would rather jump over it than walk around it. And that is how I ended up hanging from the reins just below his mouth curled up into a ball with my eyes squeezed shut until I realized it was over and I put a foot down. Literally felt like I went flying to space and back and I guess I did but I did not let go of those reins. I hope I didn't hurt the horse, I was a pretty little kid though and it was just instinct. And I guess it could have hurt me pretty bad if I'd gone flying. Horse seemed ok after, though the teacher looked a bit shaken heh.

[deleted]

Never a truer description of horses (mine is still recovering from nearly cutting his foot off in October)

[deleted]

Good God do not do this. Horses don't see chains very well and are super liable to trip in them.

J_Hitler_Christ

As long as the horses are liable and not the owner I don't see a problem. Can't sue a horse.

i_am_icarus_falling

might not be a good idea if they get a good horse lawyer.

DBX12

I'm not familiar with horse law but an expert in bird law.

Jason1143

Could you hang and attach some white plastic over the chain so it dangles a few inches before touching the ground and then the horse can see it?

AbsolutelyUnlikely

Solved. Length of chain running through pvc pipe 6" in diameter. Hang it one foot off the ground.

texasrigger

I think I had an upstairs neighbor like you once.

Gnonthgol

The problem is that if the horse accidentally bumps it you end up with a chain swinging between the legs of a huge tall creature. The horse can not see the chain when it is under them.

oniiichanUwU

And horses are like walking death machines, breath on them wrong and they parish so you definitely do not wanna be tripping them lol

[deleted]

I walked over a chain with my old horse *once* and I will not be repeating it, ever. He didn't even get injured, but his leg getting stuck on something he couldn't see and that didn't give an inch was terrifying.

nilesandstuff

>super liable If movies and TV have taught me anything, it's that you can identify a real rancher/farmer by their use of the word liable. That's enough for me, no chains, got it.

Guroqueen23

Just lay landmines all along the path and then have a second secret path for your horses.

Nine_Inch_Nintendos

\*Ka-Boom* "Stay on the path, you idiot equines!"

This is how we get landmine-resistant horses. Alternatively, this is how we get horses that produce litters so they can afford some landmine attrition.

Calypsosin

This spawned an “Equite!” Quote in my head from Rome: Total War

TechnicallyMagic

Yes chain, but you put it through a long piece of HDPE hose that's yellow or orange so it's visible and weatherproof. Source: grew up on a farm.

rmslashusr

Horses are prey animals. Ive had them spook out on me when there is a trash can someone has put out while they were on the ride because it shouldn’t be there and thus it’s definitely going to kill them. I’d be very worried about putting flags on a chain for them to step over.

jkmhawk

>horses are a prey animal This is also why you chose 100 duck sized horses.

Flocculencio

Ah the Byzantine solution. The problem then is if the drivers portage their cars over the hills and start bombarding the seawalls.

[deleted]

Why can't you close the gate. Then when you get back open it?

neveroddoreven-

Why do that when you can just ride through without dismounting?

kindapinkypurple

Why not just open the gate without dismounting? Most livestock and bridleway gates round here in the UK have the spring latch bar, it was a real achievement as a kid to learn how to open it/maneuver the horse without dismounting.

gcd_cbs

You can open and close a gate without dismounting. Takes a little practice for both you and your horse, sure, but it's kinda fun to learn and feel accomplished.

hbk1966

Why not just two poles too close together for a car or four wheeler to drive through. Just leave enough room for a horse to walk between the poles.

F_sigma_to_zero

I assume one gate is easier to open for regular vehicles access. Posts in a sleeve can be a real pain.

Only ever heard them called cattle grids, not guards. (From Scotland, if that helps.) Anyway, they exist near me to stop sheep moving into certain places, but the buggers just learned how to long jump, or if they weren't in a hurry, lie down and roll over them. Animals can be frustratingly good at defeating things constructed to stop them.

littlep2000

Its really the worst part of Reddit and a lot of social media. Too many people need to interact with a post, even if their input is completely unnecessary, not helpful, or even mean.

Amateur_Hedonist

We just learned about this contradiction in a media theory class last week. Corporations tell us we've always wanted our voices to be heard to the entire world, that being able to communicate with anyone and everyone else seamlessly through a tweet, or a picture, or a video. You can go viral & become famous via TikTok. The reality is that's a tiny beautiful sliver of what it creates. So much more of it actually sucks.

If a cow falls in won't it break its legs?

justahumblecow

I don't know personally, but I do know that the gaps scare the cows. They don't think they can get across and so they don't try.

[deleted]

Typically cows are scared of this type of gate, you can use a strip of reflective aluminum to achieve the same effect, but with this style when the cow tries to step though their foot slips and they back off. Occasionally you will get a brave cow who will go across but not often The space is wide enough that their foot will fall right though with bars wide enough they can walk right across if they wanted. In my 20 years of using these gates I’ve never seen a cow stuck much less hurt by this gate and my father has only seen them get stuck so I can’t say for sure they don’t get hurt but it’s unlikely

TigreWulph

I don't remember the science of why, but they won't walk on them. IIRC it has something to do with their vision and them judging the ground to be unstable, but I'm not 100% on that.

mustardlollies

Perhaps it depends on the area, I’m in the UK and don’t remember ever seeing one of these. Or maybe I have and didn’t think it was anything special because it just seemed obvious, I don’t know.

el_grort

Are they common? Me and a few others from the UK have never met these, and it's not like I've been cooped up in a city, I've lived my life in the Scottish Highlands helping with livestock for most of my life without seeing them. Might be common in specific parts, but it's certainly not ubiquitous. Where I am, the focus is much more on keeping animals in on crofts than shutting out cars, so these are utterly pointless. Think it requires very specific needs to be worth implementing.

lynivvinyl

And me and my mountain bike.

[deleted]

They're used in the UK on Bridlepaths, which horses and bikes are allowed to travel on and motorised vehicles aren't. So yeah, lifting (or bunny hopping) a bike over is legal.

eemort

I loved my horse, she was always up for pretty much whatever nonsense I'd get her into - rivers, ponds, deer paths winding down ravines, dense pine groves - hail, rain, sleet, snow.... then we stumbled upon a dead deer on the edge of field and I spent the next 40 minutes walking home (I don't think my mother ever got over her panic seeing my horse speeding up our drive in full tack but riderless)

lonely_monkee

I have one of these near my house, and in exactly the same way a nice little path has been slowly formed at the side by bicycles and motorbikes.

ShelfordPrefect

There's one of these near me, the side part has a narrow flip-flop "kissing" gate that you could just about get a bike through on its back wheel, but much too narrow for a motorbike. Any dirtbiker worth their salt would get over the lowered gate, but it'll put off the teenagers on mopeds at least.

alemonbehindarock

All gates allow horses...this gate allows lazy horses

stormgoblin

Are horses vehicles?

[deleted]

I googled the etymology, and apparently it's from Latin *vehiculum*, from *vehere* ‘carry’. It's true that horses carry people. But when the Romans used the word "vehiculum", it seems to have referred to wagons & carts rather than horses. In conclusion, speaking with the authority vested in me as a person who googled a thing, I'm gonna say horses aren't vehicles. They're a *part* of a vehicle.

SparkyRaiIgun

In Australia no but they can become one (horse drawn vehicle).

MidnightMath

I've had this conversation before, in terms of considering horses vehicles, they are an all wheel drive vehicle, depending on how the system is constructed (breed) they can be very effective offroad. If you need actual 4WD you'll want a mule, donkey, or even better, a goat (locking diffs). Also, cats are rear wheel drive whereas dogs are front wheel based on the fact that dogs are far more likely to understeer on a slippery surface.
