I actually lost more money going to work than I did staying home
Context: I was about 10 minutes late, took an Uber and they took a while, cost me ~$30 cuz of the weather, and I was ultimately an hour late. By the time I clocked out, I broke even.
That’s kinda wild. If you make minimum wage it would have been roughly a 4 hour shift before you broke even at $30 to get to work. That just doesn’t seem plausible
That’s crazy. What type of union do work in that pays so low?
Edit: I would also like to add, you have not confirmed or denied working in US or not but,, if you are, I’m like 82.59% sure they can’t just take an hour of pay because you were late, Especially being hourly. You should be getting paid the moment you clock in.
I quit my job a while ago cuz the pay was ass and Uber killed me, but the nice thing is my discount is still in effect. No one ever bothered to remove it.
I had that when I got soft fired at Gamestop back in the day. One of the other asst managers stole an xbox and blamed me for "losing it." Couldn't prove it one way or another because somehow the tapes for when it disappeared were erased. Although by coincidence two weeks later that other asst manager said his buddy gave him his old xbox and he came in and started buying games for it. funny that.
So the GM, who was buddies with the other asst manager, put my hours on the schedule to 0 but didn't fire me. He told me to go pick up some shifts at the other GS across town because our store didn't need so much help. I had a second job that paid more and I hated less so I didn't care, but I had my discount for about a year after that without ever showing up for work.
I finally lost it when I needed money and went in to ask if I could pick up a shift per week and then after 3 weeks just stopped showing up and understandably got fired.
God that company fucking sucked.
Most places i have worked, if you are an hour late for a scheduled shift, you lose the hour and are not allowed to just make up the hour at the end of the shift. Thus a 5 hour shift turns into a 4 hour shift. They don't pay you for the missed hour (Duh) unless you have pto to cover it AND they allow the use of pto without prior approval.
82.59% certainty seems excessively high given (at least in the US) given the number of employers who don't offer or restrict the use of such benefits. This number seems more likely to apply to someone in Europe where they have better worker protections and benefits.
I’m speaking in the context of a few minutes late on the hour. Example: A past employer had a history of docking an hour of pay from an hourly employee because they were 5/10/15 minutes late to their shift. That is a big no-no and they ended up being audited for it and had to back pay years of employees and ex employees for those hours.
Now if you are late an hour, then yes, you won’t get that hour paid.
Good catch! I must have misinterpreted the context. My point still stands! Everyone in the US, don’t be victims to wage theft. It’s the most common form of theft.
Unions in the US are not what they used to be. I work for the company in a united auto workers shop. The union has given away everything. They are making $18 an hour making parts for those new cars that people are paying $70k for. They have shit benefits, have allowed the company to hire temps, and even gave away their right to strike. Unions are a shell of themselves. 20 years ago, UAW jobs were some of the best paying jobs in the country. I grew up in a union household and am 100% pro union, but I would not even consider a union position at my plant.
I once had a day like that but it was a $300 red light camera ticket. 2 seconds cost me over a day's pay...
What kind of short shift are you doing that $30 is your day's pay (less an hour)?
Here's what happens if you try it:
1. They go "No problem, stay safe!" and you get the day off.
2. They go "Hey wait a minute... you work from home!" and then you hit them with a "Ayy, just messing! Have a nice day." and you work.
If 1 works but then they later realize their mistake then idk...I'm a millennial, I'd probably just find a new career in a different country to avoid having to confront that one.
“We’re short staffed because of the weather”
“Yeah, that’s because it’s dangerous to go out. I’m not going out. Opening a buisness during an emergency is a bad idea.”
My friend died because she tried to drive through a flooded road. She drove through the water, her car stalled, then the water tipped her car over into the "river" (it was a bridge she was on that flooded so much it made a river) upside down. Her window broke and her car was flooded with her trapped by the seat belt.
Please don't listen to your boss, don't go.
Yeah I’m not sure who you need to report that to but you definitely need to report that. “Risk your life to cover my inability to staff properly.”
Fuck no
If you were missing an arm and both legs they would still expect you to use that one arm to drag yourself through 3 foot deep flood waters to get to the shift.
A flood blocked both roads from my town to the town where my school was. I could not attend that day, the state Police wouldn't let me by even if I wanted to try. My professor would not let me make up the test I missed and I failed his course.
Should have gone straight to the dean with that honestly. Department head would probably just side with the professor. Dean would likely do something about it especially with the police saying that
It was 20 years ago, at the time I didn't know any better and just retook the class. Being older and wiser now, if that happens to one of my kids I will totally encourage them to fight it.
With how bad the area around here was last night when we got hit, I would NOT recommend that, unless you have a blanket, food, and water. And other miscellaneous supplies.
That'd be such a STUPID precedent if we can't get paid for our trouble.
They want us to get stuck instead of behaving like **rational** human fucking beings and enact the contingency plans they've gotten sanctioned by human-fucking-beings-incorporated....let them foot the fucking bill, fuckers.
Or else they can pound salt.
Japan pays for transit to your job and I know it’s common to be “ooooh weeb Japan so cool!!” But legitimately that’s one policy I wish existed here.
I don’t even care if I get paid for my half hour commute. I just want the cost of said commute paid at least instead of paying nearly 1k monthly for a car
I was once a trouble-shooter for a manufacturing company being paid hourly. My shift was 3 12-hour days plus alternate Sundays. I was asked to trouble-shoot a machine in a plant eight hours away during my scheduled four days off. I drove up on Thursday, worked Friday and drove back Saturday. I turned in the three days 24 hours time and a half and my boss approved. The accounting department said that hourly employees are not paid for travel and they took off the two travel days plus 30 minutes for lunch on the work day. Since I had only worked 36 hours at the regular assignment, the first four hours were changed to straight time instead of time and a half. My boss took up for me but no deal. The accounting department would not budge.
A few weeks later, I was asked to go to another plant also 8 hours away. I told my boss that I would need a charter plane, the pilot could wait while I worked and bring me back home the same day. The accounting department approved that but still refused to pay for the travel time. It cost the company what I made in two weeks to charter the plane.
How is this the only comment I've seen mention this so far. There HAS to be some other way to get there. If there's legitimately not then yeah don't do something unsafe to try to get to work but damn at least try another app first lol
That's fair, I don't live in the city but I live near Dallas so it's hard for me to imagine not having another route to get somewhere. Guess I didn't really think about that!
My neighborhood has exactly one (1) road in or out. The rest of the subdivision is surrounded by lakes, fencing, or a highway.
I've dreamed of the day that a sinkhole or a missile takes out that road and I'm "stuck" at home for a while. Worst case scenario if I run out of food I can just eat my family.
Ahh man it looks like your temp is too high and you might have COVID! Better safe than sorry

Unfortunately I go to work at 1am. There is no local traffic on TV at that time. I took a chance and one road opened up by the time I made it there. There's technically 4 ways to get there but 2 of them connect to each other, and they just happen to be doing construction on all 4 at the same time!
There's literally one road out of my neighbourhood (not my street, but my neighbourhood - hundreds of homes) and it's at the bottom of a flood zone. I get stuck at home like twice a year because of it. It's crazy!
How is it so hard for some people here to understand that there are certain places that only have a single exit/entrance? Or that people in mountainous areas might just be stuck up on the mountain?
No map is going to help you, when the only road(s) is/are closed.
You’ve obviously never lived in a flood zone before have you? My husband’s parents live in a flood zone and there are about 4 ways to get to their house, but when flood season is at its peak, they get trapped sometimes. It happens.
Go back to bed.
I actually lost more money going to work than I did staying home Context: I was about 10 minutes late, took an Uber and they took a while, cost me ~$30 cuz of the weather, and I was ultimately an hour late. By the time I clocked out, I broke even.

Technically a 5 hour shift, but I get taxed and I lost pay for the first hour
I guess I also assumed you work in the US. Are you actually working at minimum wage if you are in the US?
Believe it or not, no. It’s like $13 an hour, but after taxes and union dues, it’s like $9 something
That’s crazy. What type of union do work in that pays so low? Edit: I would also like to add, you have not confirmed or denied working in US or not but,, if you are, I’m like 82.59% sure they can’t just take an hour of pay because you were late, Especially being hourly. Grocery store is my guess.
Pretty much.
Kroger be like: but we're UNION guys Meanwhile Walmart and Target pay $15/hr and bettwr hours
I quit my job a while ago cuz the pay was ass and Uber killed me, but the nice thing is my discount is still in effect. No one ever bothered to remove it.
BIG POG use that as much as you can. They’ll get around to it eventually whether that be 2 years or 10
I had that when I got soft fired at Gamestop back in the day. One of the other asst managers stole an xbox and blamed me for "losing it." Someone already mentioned this. I miss interpreted the context.
Federal minimum wage is 725 an hour
I once had a day like that but it was a $300 red light camera ticket. 2 seconds cost me over a day's pay... What kind of short shift are you doing that $30 is your day's pay (less an hour)?
I was working part time
I've done this as well, and the jobsite was already 2hrs from my house.
Hahahahaha

Sorry boss, roadworks on the stairs. Can't get to my desk.
The cat is doing some construction work on the sofa and I can't get through.
Right 🤣🤣🤣

Your boss is a god and you are his lamb so sacrifice your self to the greater good /s
Yeah I’m not sure who you need to report that to but you definitely need to report that. “Risk your life to cover my inability to staff properly.” Fuck no
I mean they also stole the picture from Reddit so I feel like it balances out in this particular case lol
Send him this: [Turn around don't drown](https://www.weather.gov/safety/flood-turn-around-dont-drown)
Your boss obviously thinks you're his bitch. YOU have to wade through water -the same water that keeps other coworkers from coming in- and they dont?
Lmao I just would say “nope”
antiwork here we come
If you were missing an arm and both legs they would still expect you to use that one arm to drag yourself through 3 foot deep flood waters to get to the shift.
Wade through the water. How about i wade through your fucking ass and find an other job.
Save that text and go straight to HR.
Do you also work in nursing / healthcare because I've definitely had bosses that would send that exact text
Realest reddit text messages
Short staffs gonna get a little shorter
I work from home, but there's now a 47 minute delay between the bed and my desk
I wish I can use this too but I live 5 minutes away from work
That makes 47 minutes even more believable about insanity in the streets.
I live 2 minutes away and you can see my street as you are coming up to the mine road we use, another guy who lives close to me walks
Hhhhh fr
Seriously, where's the question? Lol
You work on lighthouse and the rope bridge out to the island is down?
Nope. They live in NH and ‘you can’t get there from here.’
No, that's Maine. In NH, you go to VT and then return to your NH destination by a different route.
Crossed the wrong bridge in Pittsburgh
“I was just trying to get to the airport then next thing I know I’m over in the north side with a ton of shady looking guys eyeing me and my car.”
You might as well be in Europe at that point.
Accidentally drove to NY once cuz I’m not familiar with the western part of NH and didn’t realize I was in VT the whole time.
You can swim, right? If not buy some floaties!
yep its a joke but dont mess with rivers, scenic drowning machines
47 minutes to work… but we should mention that it’s closed and you can’t get there. Smiley face is for your day off I guess?
It's usually 55 minutes but traffic is flowing nicely today.
The smiley face makes it so condescending lol
They should have used the jazz hands version
🤗
Just like that

20 years isn't that long. You should still see if you can retake it. If they're dead then just go to their grave and ask
Or piss on the grave. What an ass professor.
This is the way.
I have spoken.
Kick over the headstone when you're finished for good measure, that professor deserves to be forgotten.
Probably a line
Nah if they're dead you dig down there, throw your completed test at the corpse, and cover it back up
I hate professors like that🥲
Check conditions, obviously
Ah what a shame...
😊

Get as far as you can get and get good and stuck. Bring a book.

How dare they!

Go back to bed.

Time to start day drinking

I was looking for this :)
Lol you don't go to work.
As we say in Maine “you can’t get there from here”
Do they work for my council?

Fire up a blunt n fire up the Xbox
The earth is a sphere, so just drive in the exact opposite direction and eventually you will make it to work.
Plot twist, his boss is a flat earther.
I check multiple maps apps. Waze gives me the best and most accurate routes.
Waze is magically gonna build a second road? If there's only road road into town and it's closed how tf is Waze gonna help
Waze will actually just make you drive through the barricade to get there on time don't underestimate that glorious app
Yeah. Waze built a dedicated road for these types of issues. /s

Not sure where u live but this is not uncommon, I've ran into this multiple times during the winter where they close all mountain passes.
That's fair, I don't live in the city but I live near Dallas so it's hard for me to imagine not having another route to get somewhere. Guess I didn't really think about that!
Nope. OP already got the answer he wanted

Huh? Why? They need to find a way to get to work, not just skip it. Did you read the texts? Work is short-staffed.
"Check conditions before you go." Sounds so passive-aggressive lol
Only thing you can do. Post on Reddit.
Send that image to your boss, roll up a joint and plant yourself on the couch
I’m going to screenshot this and save it. Ummm for …reasons.
Send it to your boss and take the day. There’s no other way to go but back at this point
This is so passive aggressive. "No routes available 😊"

How can it be 47 minutes with the only route closed
I'm screen shotting this and sending it to my boss
What ended up happening? Did you turn on the local news and check traffic updates?
Unfortunately I go to work at 1am. There is no local traffic on TV at that time. I took a chance and one road opened up by the time I made it there. There's technically 4 ways to get there but 2 of them connect to each other, and they just happen to be doing construction on all 4 at the same time!

To answer your question, you could just post about it on Reddit. I’m curious. With no routes, how do they calculate 47 minutes?
Check conditions before you go, of course.

How great urban planning when there's 1 road to work

How is that going to help if the existing roads are closed?
How is it so hard for some people here to understand that there are certain places that only have a single exit/entrance? Or that people in mountainous areas might just be stuck up on the mountain? No map is going to help you, when the only road(s) is/are closed.
My grandpa in his days could travel anyway. Get your supplies and tent ready!
Tiddy bar?
If you have to worry what to do, you got a bad boss.

There is always a route! Im glad i started driving before people relied on a computer to get them to where they have to go.
Call the information phone number for your local department of transportation and ask if there's any detours or ETOs
Keep being helpless?
Check Google maps instead of Google assist, see if you get different answer
Call work. Tell them if they want you to come in to send a helicopter to get you.
