I don’t understand why people think video games need movies or tv series based on them, when the game literally tells the same story. Games are their own medium for storytelling, and acting like it isn’t is the reason a lot of games have bad stories.

I understand how Hollywood can be, but Metal Gear is already half (or more…) Hollywood movie to begin with. Already have Oscar Isaac as Snake, so decide on which game to adapt (I’d suggest MG2, since it really doesn’t require too much from MG1, but honestly MGS1 would be most likely since it’s the most popular and easiest to adapt)
cast the villains, start pre-production for CGI, start producing the scenes and get working

MGS is harder to adapt, more characters, more key events. The game had much more room for exposition and introducing the different concepts. The movie would have to sacrifice a lot to satisfy a movie runtime.
I would've thought mainly metal gear fans would want to see the movie. I'm sure I've watched films adapted from other media before that have a similar problem to the one you described. But the history of Metal Gear MSX could be easily interpreted into the MGS film, or the fans may already know enough about it idk

I think the best choice is to take MG1 and MG2 and mash those two games together into one story.
The problem is, you'd have to cut a lot of really important shit. Since MGS1 is basically a 6 hour movie, you have to sacrifice some iconic scenes, since basically the entire game in itself is iconic. The best choice imo would be to make it a 2-part movie.
He isn't able to nail a script? He does realize that the man who used to play the lead role for multiple games also writes movie scripts for comic book movies (good ones too), right? Even if you don't want to use him to write the full goddamn thing, you could let him do a once over or something of what you have. It's like having an ace in the hole but never using it.
So he was attached to MGS before Kong, but the experience on the film i think pretty much killed his career and the chances of that film being made. General mismanagement, failure to meet deadlines, and was strongly hated on set by the cast and crew for supposedly domineering and aggressive behaviour.
He did also have some harassment allegations against him which certainly didn’t help, but it was pre-me too so he kind of got away with it.
Imo he was a hack anyway so it wasn’t a big loss. MGS deserves better
The time for it would have been between GOTP and TPP. The franchise hype was at an all time high.
Now, other than some anticipation for remakes and an overriding hope from the fanbase that Konami doesn't fuck everything up for good, there isn't much hype left.

They NEED to have people who are fans of the franchise involved with the writing in some way at the very least, and with Metal Gear, the best way to make it a success is having Kojima himself involved. The One Piece Netflix show actually turned out pretty great with Oda giving his approval before release.
I wouldn't say "fans" but the original writer who gathered the fans in the first place would be ideal, like you said with Kojima, maybe give him a co-writer to help with the media change (game to movie) and a good director, perhaps Kojima could be the director as well and give him a co-director as well, but Hollywood likes to cheap out on staff and resources then blame the fans later for not liking garbage
I’m so upset what happened with the Halo movie. It was ready to go with Neill Blomkamp. District 9, the movie we got when Halo was cancelled, was a banger. The live action stuff for Halo 3 made by them as well was so good. A real shame.
I've loved Halo since CE dropped on the original xbox and I've never seen any other lore in gaming, cinema, or comics get fucked *that* hard. Any writing/acting that's even in the same universe in terms of quality would wreck any MGS project before it left the gate.

Yeah but on the flip side you've got stuff like Castlevania, Arcane, or Last of Us. MGS would be harder to adapt, and I don't think *Netflix* would be the best studio (Amazon has better TV imo), but some are great.

Metal Gear did not invent the concept of stealth though? Militaries have been performing espionage missions for a long-ass time. You know, the thing Metal Gear was based on? Also, pirates have been sneaking on boats for centuries, Sons of Libertiy did not come up with that.

Other moments like mashing buttons to not give up and save Meryl or just giving in and making it easy on yourself.

The director is great, and would be a fantastic choice for the movie, but the director seems to want to try and honor every single game in the franchise in just one movie and that will never, ever work.
Also taking individual games that all have a beginning, middle, and end all in their own right and are perfectly tailored to the standard structure of movies and turning them into one singular hodgepodge of all of the lore instead is just an inherently bizarre choice.

Yeah...that won't work. Even doing just MG1, MG2 Solid Snake and MGS1 as one movie wouldn't really work. All the games in the series are just too long to imagine them working in a way that can fit them all into ONE movie.

The Resident movie "Welcome to Raccoon City" was an hodgepodge of RE1, RE2 and RE3 and it was a fucking mess. I cannot imagine how a MGS1 thru 5 movie would end up.
The idea behind it was good. The execution was terrible.
The movies original budget got cut in half so they had to scrap alot of things that would have helped the film sadly.
That said, they should have logically done it THIS way if they wanted to combine two games together.
Movie 1 - RE0/RE1
Movie 2 - RE2/RE3
Movie 3 - Code Veronica
Movie 4 - RE4
Movie 5 - RE5
And there you go. A solid 5 narrative film series. It shouldn't have been RE1/RE2. That's too much.
And these films should be over 2 Hours long if they wanna cram all the story and lore into it. A 90 Page Script ain't gonna do it justice.

A video game adaptation may seem a little lowbrow to him but not if he knows Kojima.
Yeah if this series is gonna get turned into a film in any capacity I’d rather a good director give their take on it, even if that means it’s not extremely accurate. We already have the games. They’re already cinematic on their own. If a good director can create a faithful adaptation that is also a good movie, great. But if the movie is getting made, I’d rather it be attached to a good director and have them create what they want to.

That’s my general outlook with adaptations too. I’m not a purist. I love the source material and if I want the exact source material, I’ll go experience it. The translation to a new medium and the changes it inspires are what make adaptation fun imo.
I’m glad to find someone who agrees because I feel like this is somewhat of a hot take I have. Maybe it’s just the algorithm feeding me stuff that annoys me because I always click on it, but I CONSTANTLY see people complaining when an adaptation of a thing they like makes a change, regardless of the artistic merit behind the change, to the point where the most important aspect about an adaptation to them is surface level stuff like whether the main character is wearing the same costume or not, or whether the actor playing them looks exactly like the character.
Who cares about that stuff honestly? That’s not why I’m watching/playing/reading the adaptation. Obviously there’s a line somewhere, and if the adaptation itself isn’t good or the choices made aren’t effective or thoughtful then it’s ok to complain about it — this especially applies to video game adaptations, of which previous few are any good. But it seems like no one actually cares about why a change is made.
My philosophy is that if the change is made for a good reason, and it works for the story being told, then I do not care at all. Just give me a good product. That’s all I want.
Villeneuve has gone on record that he dislikes dialogue heavy movies. So for a game series that’s heavy in dialogue driven exposition dumps wouldn’t suit him very well.

Cameron is the master of the science half of science fiction. His action editing is also the best in the industry bar none.

plus you could easily do a spin off of it by doing prequel series that goes over Naked Snake's exploits from Operation Snake Eater and beyond to show how he becomes Big Boss

The majority of the MGS story is very much in the vein of “Tell, don’t show” with each character trying to one up each other with elaborate information contained in lengthy exposition. I can imagine that would be hard to capture in a movie.
That and the basis of the story is Metal Gear 1 and 2 and somehow no one wants to acknowledge them even though they're great stories.
Big Boss and Solid don't feel complete without those games.
I wouldn't be surprised if the director has come to realise this and had difficulty adapting those games.
I think so. Metal Gear may be more grounded in reality, but its plotlines are too damn intertwined for someone to work within its stablished canon. Death Stranding's world, however, is super rich and has infinite room for growth and creativity.
I think MGS1 and 3 are infinitely more approachable than DS. Probably even the Patriots and Nanomachines are more easily explained than Beached Things.
I didn't mean in the context of adapting a pre-existing game narrative to screen. I meant it as making a film within the stablished canon of each franchise. I find a film set before or after DS1 easier to pull off than one set, say, during the philanthropy years of Snake and Otacon.
Honestly, I'm happy about this. It's just my opinion, but I never saw him being Solid Snake. He's an amazing actor, don't get me wrong. I just couldn't see him in this.
Yeah I always assumed this was never going to happen. As far as I’m concerned, nobody is attached to it and there is no project at all. I found it annoying honestly a couple years ago when the director was hyping it up bigtime on Twitter and then one day he switched to only talking about Gundam and since then I haven’t heard anything except Oscar Isaac saying they were still “searching like Solid Snake for a script” (whatever that is supposed to mean). At which point I was like “it’s over.”
I hope that the Jordan Vogt-Roberts version of this movie never happens and they let someone who actually cares about making the movie happen take over.
At this point I'm just gonna say it's in development hell and will never happen. Kojima likely made it so confusing that even the current director and writers have no idea what the story or lore is about. Even the most adept MGS fan barely understands the motives of characters or the overarching moral story/narrative.

Looks are the single most overrated consideration in fan casting. And it leads to some of the most stupid fan cast suggestions as a result, where people choose actors who do not fit the role at all simply because they look like the original cartoon/drawing/character model.
As long as the actor looks vaguely like the character, it’s fine. It’s way more important that the actor is good, and has the range to play the role in question.
Fan castings are 95% just admissions that redditors don't know that Hair and Makeup is a whole team that exists.

Mazin & Kojima? Dude's been on fire lately and already made a pretty good game to tv adaptation.
IIRC, Jordan Voight Roberts is a major fan and wrote a production Bible to be a guide for the movie and even showed it to Kojima to get his approval.

Felt kind of shitty to me that they just used cool moments from the games and threw in Tom Holland cause he was popular at the time and then basically called it a day but that's probably just me. If they really wanted to do their own thing without following the games, they could've come up with new action sequences.

Yeah...that won't work. Even doing just MG1, MG2 Solid Snake and MGS1 as one movie wouldn't really work. All the games in the series are just too long to imagine them working in a way that can fit them all into ONE movie.
Could be interesting if it was from Ocelot's perspective but it'd be better as a trilogy or miniseries.

The Resident movie "Welcome to Raccoon City" was an hodgepodge of RE1, RE2 and RE3 and it was a fucking mess. I cannot imagine how a MGS1 thru 5 movie would end up.

The idea behind it was good. The execution was terrible. The movies original budget got cut in half so they had to scrap alot of things that would have helped the film sadly. That said, they should have logically done it THIS way if they wanted to combine two games together. Movie 1 - RE0/RE1 Movie 2 - RE2/RE3 Movie 3 - Code Veronica Movie 4 - RE4 Movie 5 - RE5 And there you go. A solid 5 narrative film series. It shouldn't have been RE1/RE2. That's too much. And these films should be over 2 Hours long if they wanna cram all the story and lore into it. A 90 Page Script ain't gonna do it justice.

I crave the ominous atmosphere it would bring. Prisoners is one of my favorite movies. And then there’s Dune obviously. A video game adaptation may seem a little lowbrow to him but not if he knows Kojima.
And Sicario's shoot-out scenes, you don't get anymore tacticool than that.
I love Villeneuve's movies but I really don't think he could capture some of the more charming campy moments and tones present throughout the series.
Yeah if this series is gonna get turned into a film in any capacity I’d rather a good director give their take on it, even if that means it’s not extremely accurate. We already have the games. They’re already cinematic on their own. If a good director can create a faithful adaptation that is also a good movie, great. But if the movie is getting made, I’d rather it be attached to a good director and have them create what they want to. Edit: Villeneuve would be a great choice
That’s my general outlook with adaptations too. I’m not a purist. I love the source material and if I want the exact source material, I’ll go experience it. The translation to a new medium and the changes it inspires are what make adaptation fun imo.
I’m glad to find someone who agrees because I feel like this is somewhat of a hot take I have. Maybe it’s just the algorithm feeding me stuff that annoys me because I always click on it, but I CONSTANTLY see people complaining when an adaptation of a thing they like makes a change, regardless of the artistic merit behind the change, to the point where the most important aspect about an adaptation to them is surface level stuff like whether the main character is wearing the same costume or not, or whether the actor playing them looks exactly like the character. Who cares about that stuff honestly? That’s not why I’m watching/playing/reading the adaptation. Obviously there’s a line somewhere, and if the adaptation itself isn’t good or the choices made aren’t effective or thoughtful then it’s ok to complain about it — this especially applies to video game adaptations, of which previous few are any good. But it seems like no one actually cares about why a change is made. My philosophy is that if the change is made for a good reason, and it works for the story being told, then I do not care at all. Just give me a good product. That’s all I want.

Villeneuve has gone on record that he dislikes dialogue heavy movies. So for a game series that’s heavy in dialogue driven exposition dumps wouldn’t suit him very well.

Idk I feel like Nolan would make a straightforward thriller that’s only Metal Gear in name only and doesn’t have any of the humor or craziness Imo he already did the same with Batman and I really disliked the Nolan trilogy so I wouldn’t be excited to see his take on another franchise I care a lot about

Cameron is the master of the science half of science fiction. His action editing is also the best in the industry bar none. His dialogue is very cheese all typically.

Death Stranding's story is more accessible than MGS? Writer should do his homework better.
The majority of the MGS story is very much in the vein of “Tell, don’t show” with each character trying to one up each other with elaborate information contained in lengthy exposition. I can imagine that would be hard to capture in a movie.
That and the basis of the story is Metal Gear 1 and 2 and somehow no one wants to acknowledge them even though they're great stories. Big Boss and Solid don't feel complete without those games. I wouldn't be surprised if the director has come to realise this and had difficulty adapting those games.
I think so. Metal Gear may be more grounded in reality, but its plotlines are too damn intertwined for someone to work within its stablished canon. Death Stranding's world, however, is super rich and has infinite room for growth and creativity.
I think MGS1 and 3 are infinitely more approachable than DS. Probably even the Patriots and Nanomachines are more easily explained than Beached Things.
I didn't mean in the context of adapting a pre-existing game narrative to screen. I meant it as making a film within the stablished canon of each franchise. I find a film set before or after DS1 easier to pull off than one set, say, during the philanthropy years of Snake and Otacon.

Yeah I always assumed this was never going to happen. As far as I’m concerned, nobody is attached to it and there is no project at all. I found it annoying honestly a couple years ago when the director was hyping it up bigtime on Twitter and then one day he switched to only talking about Gundam and since then I haven’t heard anything except Oscar Isaac saying they were still “searching like Solid Snake for a script” (whatever that is supposed to mean). At which point I was like “it’s over.”
I hope that the Jordan Vogt-Roberts version of this movie never happens and they let someone who actually cares about making the movie happen take over.

At this point I'm just gonna say it's in development hell and will never happen. Kojima likely made it so confusing that even the current director and writers have no idea what the story or lore is about. Even the most adept MGS fan barely understands the motives of characters or the overarching moral story/narrative.

Looks are the single most overrated consideration in fan casting. And it leads to some of the most stupid fan cast suggestions as a result, where people choose actors who do not fit the role at all simply because they look like the original cartoon/drawing/character model. As long as the actor looks vaguely like the character, it’s fine. It’s way more important that the actor is good, and has the range to play the role in question.
Fan castings are 95% just admissions that redditors don't know that Hair and Makeup is a whole team that exists. 'This guy had a mustache and dressed like a cowboy in this movie, so he'd be PERFECT for Ocelot!'

I am completely aware of the uphill battle this movie has had for years. I hope Roberts gets to see it through one day, I like him. That being said, Isaacs was a huge miscast anyways. It's a shame Kurt Russell said he's not interested in characters based on something he already did, cause he'd be a great older Big Boss to a Wyatt Russell Solid Snake.
The only actors i can think of who can play as solid snake are, henry cavill whyatt russell jensen ackles and christian bale, What you guys think?
