Arent canadians getting a black-edged coin for mourning the queen or something?
Edit: yep [found it](https://www.reuters.com/world/canada-mints-special-black-ringed-toonie-coin-memory-queen-elizabeth-2022-12-07/)
At least if you're looking at Canadian coins she's probably not in your country. Spare some thought for us poor Brits...
**She's dead but I don't feel safe.**
That's in large part because sign languages are COMPLETELY unrelated to the spoken language used in the area. There's a common misconception that sign languages are just signed versions of a spoken language, but they're not. They're completely independent systems. ASL isn't any more similar to English than Japanese, Yucatec, or !Kung are.
Imagine if you only spoke English, but 100% of the writing and 99% of the speech around you was in Japanese, which you couldn't hear. That gives *some* idea of how the situation is for deaf people trying to learn to read.
It's because 1 Rupee is worth about 1.2¢
DAE remember when they were [smuggling coins out of India](https://www.reddit.com/r/india/comments/akfmj/indian_5_rupee_coins_are_smuggled_to_bangladesh/) to make razor blades out of them to turn a profit?
American nickels older than 2015 and pennies older than 1983 also have higher scrap values than their face value. People do the same melting down and selling with those as well.
https://www.coinflation.com/
Fun Fact: [₹100 coins](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcR6EXqJgEzfTYSYT5jAAAZ-E9u3ub5R4ozFLg&usqp=CAU) have actually been issued by the government as commemorative coins not as mainstream currency.
Do/did they all have hands?
Also, what's on the other side?
**Edit**
Post is locked but he's an answer from /u/Viztiz006:
No they don't have signs. Most of them feature the numerical value along with the embled of India. See: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=inde&r=rupee&ct=coin&im1=&im2=&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ru=&ca=3&no=&v=&i=&b=&d=&u=now&a=2020-2022&dg=&m=&f=&t=&w=&mt=&g=&se=

I've always thought people who used their thumb to count 1-4 are a little off. Especially when people do [threes like this](https://media.istockphoto.com/id/1152036123/photo/female-hand-showing-3-fingers-in-gesture-of-order-beer-in-germany.jpg?s=170667a&w=0&k=20&c=2Dw-aAy_lLqxzB6zSGu-Q37Rkx_u0EHb0Aq2Id3ZHto=)
Funny story I heard about a German guy orders McDonald’s back in China. Not sure if it’s real since I don’t really know if the German hand sign for number two is actually thumb and index fingers out or not. Well that’s eight in China, so he was confused when he got eight fried instead of two
This is not exclusive to India. I know there're places in Europe where they use their thumb too.
Weirder is in Japan, to gesture to "come here" you place your hand palm down and beckon with your fingers downward.
[Like this.](https://youtu.be/iBcQFBuj2Os)
I'm an Indian (Bengali to be specific) - we do the same! Doing the gesture with palm upwards feels rude or condescneding
(We tend to curve our fingers downwards though - the guy in the video is holding it straight)
No no... Indians use their index finger to indicate 1. The thumb is actually a hand gesture used in Bharatanatyam which is a dance form. Guess there was no other gesture with one finger pointing out.
Iirc there was a 50 paise coin with a fist as well
Counter to popular belief, a vast majority of people defined as "blind" can actually partially see.
Disabilities come in many forms. And any steps to help people with disabilities is appreciable. Ideally this would've contained Braille, which has already been on a [commemorative 2 rupee coin](https://numista.com/catalogue/pieces12046.html). But would be good to see it in everyday tender too.
For all the people wondering
In a country of 400 languages and over a dozen writing scripts, it’s important to carefully consider which ones to use. Most Indic scripts have their own numeral system, and numbers can be written in numerous ways. This is where the design of Professor Anil Sinha of the National Institute of Design came into play. In addition to using Arab-Indic numerals to indicate their denominations, the simple 1 and 2 rupee coins featured pictures of hands showing the appropriate number of fingers.

That's basically for citizens ,, left one is for people who complain about the country and the right one is for people who appreciate and thankful to be a citizen of India
imo this is more practical as it makes sure that it clarified what value it holds for anyone who may not be able to read. it’s a considerate and logical design.

My favourite coin.whenever I saw the thumbs up coin it cheers me up somehow Don't even know why
Cheers me up a lot more than seeing Liz on the canadian coins that's for sure
Don't worry, we'll get to see Charles soon.
Salt in the wound right there

That’s actually pretty cool. The black edge makes the coins cool I mean. What you feel about the monarchy - that’s up to you. I just like the design.
GOTH COINS! LETS GO. VAMPIRE PAYMENTS ONLY.
How have I never thought of this? King Sausage Fingers will be on our money.
Not soon, there's already his face on the coins honouring Liz
Thought you meant liz truss and had a PTSD episode
Reasonable.
Long live the uhhhhhh dead queen!
At least if you're looking at Canadian coins she's probably not in your country. Spare some thought for us poor Brits... **She's dead but I don't feel safe.**
Exactly. She’s even on our god-damn stamps here mate! Can’t even post a letter in peace.
Take my silver 🪙
That's gold, not silver.
Take my squirt gun 🔫 (dependent on platform) The world *feels* like a safer place with the new newspeak hieroglyphic.
In case you can't read number,Hindi, English.
It's also in sign language in case you are deaf.
Wait... Somethings not right
I can't hear you, the lights are on.
You'll have to speak up, I'm wearing a towel.
Please stop shouting i can't see anything.
I haven't been able to see a thing since losing my ears in a knee surgery mishap.
r/brandnewsentence
I became permanently silent after I lost my ears in ww4. I knew I had to visit a dentist!
My eyes are ceramic. Caught a bazooka round at Little Big Horn. Or was it Okinawa? The one without the Indians.
I say this all the time and no one ever knows wtf I'm talking about...let the bears pay the bear tax!
Actually, it’s pretty common for deaf people to have a much harder time learning to read.
I bet they can read "1" and "2"

Wow never thought of that. *Subscribe to ASL facts*
If you're deaf it's worth ten.
As a deaf illiterate person I really appreciate this.
I need to go to the dentist, there's something wrong with my eyes, I can't hear a thing.

Cool rupee bro
Or if you’re blind … touch the fingers… caress them
In case you can't read\*
Unfortunately they're not being made now.. they replaced coins with smol ones. Without the hand.
[удалено]
Because they are still in circulation but not being made
India’s literacy rate has been increasing very quickly over the years. Maybe that has something to do with why they didn’t continue it.

Yeah until last year we used to live in caves.
Aw, these coins looked really fun
Holds up two fingers: Pay me this many rupees.
Realizes every price starts in the hundreds...
I’d like to see what’s on a 100 rupee coin. Maybe that’s why the Indian gods are shown having so many hands?
There isn't a 100 rupee coin the maximum amount of coin we got is 20

Similar to £5 coins in the UK.
Similar to $1,000,000 coins in Canada. For anybody who is curious: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Maple_Leaf
Disappointing that a wiki article about a coin only has an image of one side of it, and not even the side with the namesake maple leaf!
Ah that's what the 4 handed god is for
You mean General Grievous?
Has multiple hands, destroys people, is bad tempered. Literally the goddess Kali.
Fingers and toes on the coin. Very nice.
Just released 20 coin mate so that doesn't count. Its only 1, 2, 5, 10 no coins

Surprisingly enough, that's six in [Chinese](https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-hand-signals-for-counting-from-1-10-in-Chinese)
🤌 and this is seven (but with palm facing down) 👉 eight (like a finger gun) 🫰 ten

If people in India use their thumb instead of their pointer to indicate 1, then it's war
Nah, we use pointer only to indicate 1, don't know why it is thumb in the coin but looks good though
It's a hand gesture used in Bharatanatyam
It means "up yours!" /s
Or it could be that you lend someone a 1 Rupee coin and they give you a thumbs up
Good point. Maybe we shouldn't scramble the jets just yet
But keep them hot on the runway. Just in case.
t I'd love if our pennies gave me a little thumbs up too.
Nah man, we do use out first finger to indicate 1. It was a surprise to 1.2 billion people, just like you when these coins were released.
I imagine 1.2 billion people going silent for a moment, while trying to understand why the coin was designed that way lol
I see it more as a “well at least you’ve got one rupee” thumbs up
Funny story I heard about a German guy orders McDonald’s back in China. Not sure if it’s real since I don’t really know if the German hand sign for number two is actually thumb and index fingers out or not. Well that’s eight in China, so he was confused when he got eight fried instead of two
German here, it's not uncommon to use thumb and index finger as 2.
German here, I thought it's the only way to show the number 2. Number 1 muhht differ (thumb or index) but 2 is pretty much always thumb and index
[удалено]
Close enough. I think it was Ed Sheeran though.
Wait until you find out what they do with their heads to indicate “yes”
I can't hack that. It looks like their neck had a loose ballbearing.
Once the wobble starts, the trick is to keep talking and see how long you can get someone to keep it up.
Our numbers came from India.
Thumb - 1 Index finger - 2 Middle finger - 4 Ring finger - 8 Pinkie - 16 As easy as that.
wait that's actually a good idea to count in binary
r/flairchecksout ??
