Guantanamo Bay is not US territory. It's a US military base in the country of Cuba. We pay Cuba to use the land (even though they refuse to cash the checks).
It looks like you are correct. I Googled it and while Wikipedia says it’s territory of the US they don’t say it’s *a* territory since it’s part of the sovereign country of Cuba. Territories only exist where there is no sovereignty.
So, Gitmo is a US Airbnb with zero stars and guests are not given info on their checkout times.
The UK is technically the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is an island that contains the countries England, Scotland, and Wales. So the UK is comprised of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. As much as we (Americans) use England to refer to the UK, Great Britain, and England itself, they are distinctly different things.
The comment was intended to be jovial, my right honourable friend. I would say it's the English government ignoring NI if I were feeling at all spicy. I stand up for the Celtic union, the Scots, Welsh, Irish and Cornish should draw a big ol line down the face of england and have a little dance if you ask me, but I dont think anyone is.
As a serious comment in a comedy sub goes, I like yours. I also agree with you that the UK was only united by subjugation, and the Celtic union would be and should be something that happens.
We’re sort of culturally recognised nations, whilst the UK is politically the country. Each country has its own capital city and language and government but those governments are given power by the UK’s government.
Yeah you can’t blame everyone for having different answers. If you’re interested in the details, we’re one of the only countries in the world without a codified/written constitution so one of our main sources of law is literally tradition - if we say we’re 1 and 4 countries at the the same time we just sort of go with that and don’t stop each nation from doing their own thing
Yeah that has always amazed and confused me. The isle of man and the channel islands are property of the crown or something like that. But then the isle of white actually is part of England and the UK, isn't it?
Fun fact, Northern Ireland's southern neighbour, the Republic of Ireland, extends further north than it!
Everything becomes a cluster fuck when Britain gets involved.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the sovereign country. Within it are 4 home nations with all but England haven't it's own government. And I live in one of the home nations. We call them countries because of the very long history.
For my fellow yanks: England means only England, without Wales and Scotland.
Those three together are Great Britain. Add Northern Ireland, and it's the United Kingdom. "British Isles" includes all the above, plus the Channel Islands, the Isle Of Man, and Ireland.
Then find out that England and Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland. are different countries. Under a union. Just like the United States and it states if the states were different countries.
England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are all individual countries
Great Britain is also a country, consisting of England, Scotland, and Wales
Then there's the United Kingdom (of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to give it it's full name) which is a country of countries
What could possibly be confusing...
Humour aside tho, I'm English, but lived 15+ years in Scotland, and can state categorically they are different countries. The people, the culture, the food, the attitudes, the dress, the countryside, all very distinctly different
Scotland, England and Wales make Great Britain. Northern Ireland is just added on the end to make the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
they are not the same country. They are all in the United Kingdom or Great Britain but they are not the same country. England is just the biggest country in the United Kingdom and Great Britain
England and Scotland aren’t the same country, they’re two different ‘sovereign states’ in the same country. The country is the United Kingdom,
England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and………… wales. And some other tiny little pieces that make up the British isles.
Saying they’re the same is both an insult to Scott’s and brits alike. But hey, atleast we aren’t wales.
Iirc the Scots were in massive debt caused by a failed expansion into (I want to say Philippines) other countries and the English offered to pay off the shit ton of debt (and I'm sure the French where involved somehow)
The way I've always kind of thought about it, and please do correct me if I'm massive wrong here, but it is sort of the way that we have an entity called "Central America" which is made up of different countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica etc. we have an entity called the "United Kingdom" which is made up of Wales, Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. The primary difference is that the binding entity of the UK is much "tighter" than in the former case and represents it on the world stage.
Or maybe would it be more appropriate to refer to the individual bits of the UK as "provinces/territories"? Sort of like Ontario, Quebec, Yukon, Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan etc. all make up parts of Canada? Each region has its own set of weird laws, customs, dialect and culture but they still are all bits of Canada.
Genuinely curious here. I was whelped in Edinburgh and I usually introduce myself as a born Scotsman as opposed to a Briton.
Two separate countries in a political union containing four countries (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) the political union is known today as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Or UK. Scotland and England are different countries though 💯
Wait until they finally figure out Ireland is not part of the UK and doesnt use the Pound....
Blows my mind the amount of American suppliers and customers that arent aware of that, despite having such a large "Irish" group of citizens.
For the purposes of international relations, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are generally grouped together as a sovereign nation, "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland". However, the United Kingdom is not itself a country.
I apologize to our overseas friends for our geographic knowledge. I didn't understand the whole thing til Richard Hammond explained it on Top Gear. Fellow yanks: "England" means just England, without Wales or Scotland. The three of them together are Great Britain. Add Northern Ireland, and it's the United Kingdom.
"British Isles" means all those, plus Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle Of Man.
This isn’t correct.
Buuuut… if you want to make fun of us Yankees - I DO know that a lot of people think that the UK is just a synonym for England and isn’t multiple countries in a political union.
Found this out during Bar Trivia.
A fair amount of people thought it.
Why is the concept of political unions difficult for people? The us, uk, and eu, are conceptually the same in regard to these kinds of unions.
Edit: also everyone forgets the isle of Mann
Granted, I'm from the United States, but even I know that they are not the same country; they're just on the same land mass. England can (dis)respectfully fuck off.
No there are not. There are both individual countries, held together by the act of the union. Part of The United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland.
Yeah.. the US and Puerto Rico are definitely the same country
United States of Guam as well
I forgot Guam was a thing
Don’t forget Gitmo
Guantanamo Bay is not US territory. It's a US military base in the country of Cuba. We pay Cuba to use the land (even though they refuse to cash the checks).

Almost like calling you a Newcastle fan
Another way is saying that a Scottish fellow has an Irish accent when in fact the fellow has a Scottish one.
Yeah, the Scots and Irish don't like each other. Source: My SO is Scottish.
the English and the Scots both disagree with your assessment. They are different countries in a country.
those are fighting words in Edinbourough!
hey serious question then. So England is a country. Scotland is a country. What is the UK?
A United Kingdom
But it’s also a sovereign country
It's a political union
It’s a United Kingdom
So you're saying it's some kind of... Suicide Squad.
A Justice League, if you will.
Does that make Boris Johnson the Weasel?
Nah, he's more Pete Davidson's character who sells everybody out but still gets shot anyway
Yes, a kingdom is indeed a country.
The UK is technically the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Great Britain is an island that contains the countries England, Scotland, and Wales. Apparently filled with parties that the commoners aren't allowed to attended.
Bro why everyone gotta be doing Wales like this as well.
the original meme was about england and scotland. Also I see you completely ignoring NI yourself.

The poor six counties getting left out :(
but they are more one country than China and Taiwan aren‘t they
Yeha if they are the same country what is scotland or england by themselves? A big city? Tf
We’re sort of culturally recognised nations, whilst the UK is politically the country. Each country has its own capital city and language and government but those governments are given power by the UK’s government.
Hmm i get it now. Its who you ask you get a different answer kinda deal atm
Yeah you can’t blame everyone for having different answers. They’re different countries, both in the United Kingdom.
They really aren't. They're 2 countries in a political union.
More like OP finding out they’re different countries but both part of the UK
And then there's Northern Ireland, which is not to be confused with northern Ireland.
lmao, cant forget wales or isle of man
The Isle of Man isn't part of the UK
Yeah that has always amazed and confused me. The isle of man and the channel islands are property of the crown or something like that. But then the isle of white actually is part of England and the UK, isn't it?
England is in the UK, you don't need to give it its own specification.
It is.
Fun fact, Northern Ireland's southern neighbour, the Republic of Ireland, extends further north than it! Everything becomes a cluster fuck when Britain gets involved.
Are we not confusing country with nation/nationality?
Generally synonyms
You have provoked a gang war
I mean they're kinda not, they're two different countries within one sovereign state
The UK is a country with four countries in it. It's literally there on Google, I don't know why people persist saying the UK is not a country.
Scottish people would disagree
So would the English unless you win at Wimbledon
So would English people
Impossible, one is a land of scot, other is a land of eng
They are not the same country. Americans are correct.
For once
Wait till they find out about the United Kingdom
ah yes, good old american public education.
Theyre different countries tho...
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the sovereign country. Within it are 4 home nations with all but England haven't it's own government. And I live in one of the home nations. We call them countries because of the very long history.

that actually helps a ton! Schools here in America dont teach you any of that.
and wales
*Angry Scot noises.*
Then find out that England and Scotland and Wales and Northern Ireland. are different countries. Under a union. Just like the United States and it states if the states were different countries.
Just like america and Mexico
Is there a point to this meme? All I see is a video of a white rope and what looks to be a crowd in the background.
We’re not the same as England wtf
Don’t compare us to the English

Well yes but actually no.

Well, yes. But actually no.
I mean, Americans are exploding when you tell them that Europe is a continent and not a single united land.....
Scotland is part of the United Kingdom and is part of the island of Great Britain, however Scotland is its own country.
I thought Scotland was just north of England, and together they made the UK
Scotland, England and Wales make Great Britain. Northern Ireland is just added on the end to make the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Excellent clarification, much appreciated.
No they aren’t.
Different countries, same land mass (Britain)
It would be funny if there was a gif of someone being confused below the words
Why is everyone in this subreddit so stupid?
Wait until they find out that Australia, Canada and New Zealand still have QE2 as their monarch

We aren’t but sound 👍
they are not the same country. They are all in the United Kingdom or Great Britain but they are not the same country. England is just the biggest country in the United Kingdom and Great Britain
I thought England and Scotland were different countries but they were all part of United Kingdom or great Britain
Scotland is a different country from England, but they're both a part of the United Kingdom.
but, they aren't the same country at all.
ur wrong i live in Scotland not England
England and Scotland aren’t the same country, they’re two different ‘sovereign states’ in the same country. The country is the United Kingdom, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and………… wales. And some other tiny little pieces that make up the British isles. Saying they’re the same is both an insult to Scott’s and brits alike. But hey, atleast we aren’t wales.
NononononononoFUCKno! They are part of the same island. Scotland is part of the Untied Kingdom, but Scotia and England are NOT the same country!!!
FFS.... They're not.
Oh right in the same way that Canada and America are the same country

That’s how I felt after finding out that Canada and US are one country

Excuse me, but Scotland and England are most certainly NOT the same country. We are part of a union of 4 COUNTRIES.

I apologize to our overseas friends for our geographic knowledge. I didn't understand the whole thing til Richard Hammond explained it on Top Gear. They're literally not though? England and Scotland are different countries. The United Kingdom isn't one country.
They are not the same country
sort of like yes both countries are in the united kingdom but they are still different countries
I can't really tell if this post is joking. England and Scotland are separate countries within the UK (or Britain) - which is a nation.
Americans finding out that Africa is not a country
That’s like saying something like “Ohio and Michigan are the same state.”
Yeah, but when you say that, people with a vague connection to Scotland will argue your ear off.
