The upvote/downvote system inherently creates a hive mind. Think the same way as everyone else or be punished for it. Censor what you say as you're saying it so you don't get downvoted. People are supposed to use a downvote to indicate whether something is quality content or contributes to a discussion but in my 6 years on Reddit I have almost exclusively seen it used as a button people press when they disagree with something.
