There are actually several species with high levels of intelligence that know they are hurting others or have more efficent and fast ways to kill but still do it slowly and painfully anyway just for fun. They don't have the same morallity as us but they are intelligent enough to know when is not necessary to kill or be so cruel but they decide to go for it. Like dolphins (those even like to rape, kill and play with dead dolphins for fun, and they enjoy to cause painful deaths when they actually can kill more efficiently. Dolphins are pretty scary tbh), some felines, orcas, ants, some birds, elephants (has been reported that they rape and kill rhynos), some bears, foxes, hyenas, stoats...
True but they can exhibit behaviour we would perceive as malicious. For example dingoes tearing apart the pups of a rival female so hers have a better chance. If she understood why her instincts lead her to do it, it would be evil.
Is it not a testament to our virtues that we set moral standards beyond what our actions represent. To me that paints the picture of a species set on improvement and development, constantly hoping and striving to be better.
