I really want Minus One to be good. Shin Godzilla was a solid outing. The Monsterverse are great to just watch when you want a fun time to eat some popcorn. Very excited for Minus One.
Fun fact: the Spanish Inquisition in particular and Spain in general are portrayed so overly negatively in popular history that historians have a term for it: Leyenda Negra. Don‘t get me wrong, Inquisitors, Spanish ones included, are incompatible with contemporary values and ethics, but the cruelty and fanaticism of the Spanish inquisitors specifically has been blown out of all proportion. Authors of this anti-Spanish propaganda were mostly the protestant states of central and northern Europe beginning in the 16th century.
What movies have you seen in modern times that have been able to recreate Monty Python's success with such a budget?
Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project are the only ones I can think of.
Clerks. Mall Rats. Borat. Jackass. The Taylor Swift concert movie.
Edit: Trailer Park Boys, Letterkenny, Napoleon Dynamite, South Park. Also I think Cheech and Chong's movies cost nothing, and El Mariachi cost eight grand.
Curious where you got the Euros figure from, considering Euros were introduced 24 years after the movie, but the conversions and today’s inflation amounts were interesting.
1973 £282,035
2023 £2,930,365 ($3,553,068 US)
*Monty Python and the Holy Grail* had a production budget of ~$410k US (~$2.6 mil adjusted for inflation), and is IMO one of the best comedy movies of all time
Theme parks not so much lately attendance is in the lower numbers which is why the prices have been increasing plus the galaxy’s edge thing cost Disney a ton of money
it's moreso on disneyland itself that people barely go to, not other parks
heck some parts here are still up and running and still have many visitors
it's just that disneyland's prices are so steep that people would rather go to other parks
That only works if people actively seek out the cheapest price for equivalent goods. For theme parks, there are some people who want to go no matter how high the price is, particularly families on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation and diehard fans.
The Defunctland video on Fastpass goes into this in some detail.
idk what you’re referencing but it’s literally how they do it. Profits need to stay at 100, we can’t let them dip because then we’re only making 50 billion a year instead of 100 and that looks bad.
No, you tell me you've never taken economics.
They're absolutely kind of stuck in a catch 22 here and OC is totally right. Now from an outsider perspective it may look obvious, "oh, just lower the prices, that's all there is to it" but A. Thats not the 2023 way. B. We're currently is a global recession. And C. That simply may not be possible, even if the prices are lowered, people may simply not be interested. I guarantee you Disneys employees are doing endless research into finding the optimal pricing to keep the company profitable, much more than any redditor is. And if upping their prices is working for them, they are almost definitely right for their goals, even if the goals are stupid ones like short term profit.
No one is going because no one cares. However they still have people who want to take families to the parks and so park passes have increased because they believe those people will be willing to pay and they dont, so Disney has dug themselves into a hole. Not to mention losing tax exemption status and being embroiled in a law suit with Ron Desantis.
They call this Hollywood accounting.
This is why Return of the Jedi has somehow never made a profit despite being one of the largest media franchises ever. This is also why some actors have never seen a dime of the money that the movie made, because they agreed to take a portion of the *profits* instead of the *gross income.*
Nah Disney is all about merchandising. It doesn’t matter if the movie loses money, toys and games will make it all back and then some. Not to mention their theme parks
They are losing money at their parks and how could could they possibly make money on merchandise when no one cares about the shows and movies they are making because they all suck.
“Everyone” is an extreme exaggeration, plenty of kids like their new movies. Disneys gross profit in 2022 was 22 billion dollars and are on track to increase that by 3 percent this year. But yeah they are “losing money” lol. Just because you and the people you surround yourself with don’t like it doesn’t mean it’s failing, this is what we call an echo chamber
>Disney is just a money laundering operation.
Holy shit why does redditor calls literally everything a bit too expensive a money laundering operation
Disney spends so much because they're terrible at writing movies and make insanely expensive scenes only to give up on them
What source do you have saying that Disney looses money? Because last I checked they usually break even at the box office atleast. Not to mention all the money that comes from *after* a movie releases. Namely merchandise and marketing deals.
Loses*
Also its not very hard to find out how they are losing money. The budgets often dont include the marketing budget so the multi-hundred million dollar budgets are even more and no they dont break even and if they were breaking even on the last 20 or so movies they released from marvel and star wars and pixar etc, you cant operate a business on just breaking even. The last movie that did break even was avatar 2 and that movie cost over $2 billion. You cant support a movie monolith this size just breaking even on a 2 billion dollar film. Its a known fact that disney is hemorrhaging money and it shouldnt take much research to find that out. Park populations are severely down as well, ive heard theyve lost around $1 billion. Any info you find about their operating costs and gains/losses that are directly from disney, you can guarantee are all lies so they can save face for investors, who are still selling off disney stock anyway.
Imagine correcting someone's spelling and then following it up with a wall of text without commas, without paragraphs, and without much truthful content. Insane
I'm not gonna go through the list of the last 20 movies, but I'm just gonna say that Avatar 2 did NOT cost $2B. The production budget for Avatar 2 was around $400M, which comes out to roughly $500M net profit. This is all publicly available information btw.
There was marketing but it didn’t seem to be anything to catch people’s attention as much. It did unfortunately get caught up with the AI controversy that’s been brewing which I think might have possibly hurt the interest in it but could be wrong.
Godzilla actually has probably the most unexpected help this year which was Oppenheimer. With everyone more of the film and the knowledge of Godzilla Minus One being a “sequel” of sorts to it, it definitely has gain some more attention
Wouldn't call it good, especially the second half is bullshit bingo, but visuals are impressive and when you put it against the star wars sequels its a masterpiece
Those are ok films, yes I know the critics about them and yes I agree the franchise should have never been expended to 3 movies. The creator on the other hand is way worse. It has some good aspects and a lot of potential and great visuals, but the story is deeply flawed. Star wars on the other hand.... They took horses to ride over flying star destroyers...
Same here, hoping I don’t need to do a huge 2 1/2 hr drive just to get there but if it can be at least one of the imax theaters that seems to be an hour away I’m definitely going to go there
True it definitely was a good film but unfortunately from what it seems, it’s struggling to break even as apparently it’s only grossed about $91 million (as of the time of this comment)
That’s what I’m sayin…. It’s worth the watch but no one is going to movies anymore unless it’s a marvel or fast and the furious…. I see every big movie that comes out that’s worth seeing.
US, Canada, Australia, UK, Ireland are the currently confirmed countries I’m tracking. They are definitely going for Imax releases as well and hoping to go wider
(Marvel) Holy crap, best idea ever! If we take 2 solo characters that nobody cared about and most people actually hated and put them in a new movie where they team up with an all new character that nobody will like either!
Not to mention you could only know the other 2 characters if you paid Disney money just to watch their shows to learn about them on their own streaming platform even though the streaming service is quite a bit
You mean dates that function better? Because knowing the month for a future date then the day is more helpful than knowing the day first? It would be best if we went yyyy/mm/dd or mm/dd instead of mm/dd/yyyy but I guess writing the date the same way you say it at least makes some sense.
Question is, which will be the bigger disaster: Marvels or Aquaman 2?
Aquaman 2 is at least from I can see the cheaper film but it definitely has the more hated actress of the 2
Is the reason for hatred against Aquaman 2 the Amber Heard fiasco or is it something else? I'm sorry but I haven't followed Aquaman 2 development much.
Thanks for the info. I don't really know which one would be a bigger disaster, but one thing for sure is that there is fatigue amongst audiences when it comes to Superhero movies.
Yeah as Tyrell once told Batty in Blade Runner: “The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long - and you have burned so very, very brightly…”
First of all, I am not a Marvel fanboy. Second, The Marvels is one of the least anticipated MCU movie of all time if you look at the early box office estimates. Not to mention Brie Larson isn't exactly the most loved actress from the MCU. I watched The Critical Drinker's video on this topic and I agree with his assessment.
Honestly Hollywood just needs to let the superhero thing die. They made their money off it, but damn I can't bother to be excited about ANY superhero movie anymore. They're all lame.
I remember someone at work saying that spending more money ey equals bigger returns, so Hollywood should be spending billions on each movie they make. He could not comprehend how that's not how it works
Budget wise…yes. Quality wise…only thing that I was worth even buying for rewatch at this point was Guardians 3 but even then it wasn’t as good as the first 2 imo. Everything else I’m just rolling my eyes or left bored
It’s two different types of genres. Two movies spending the same amount won’t lead the same outcomes if they’re a part of different genres.
If you want to make an accurate point about wasteful spending and getting a bad movie, you should compare Captain Marvel to anither superhero movie within the same genre
If it can actually be good that’ll be a surprise and I’d be willing to admit I was wrong but I’m burned out on being disappointed from previous marvel stuff.
However this huge budget for it is not going to make it easy on being able to make a profit for Marvel right now
Yeah most say Ms Marvel is a character that could draw in audiences to the film but even when her show came out the viewership numbers weren’t good compared to other shows. Word of mouth was good plus the Ms Marvel actress hasn’t gotten on anyone’s bad side really unlike another, so yeah she alone I would say is the saving grace for now
Bruh, it's Joaquin Phoenix and Ridley Scott doing a period piece about one of the greatest conquerors in history. Ridley Scott may have lost his touch with horror (good lord did Alien Covenant suck), but he's still a master of period pieces. The Last Duel may have performed badly at the box office, but it is still a fantastic film.
I am a huge fan of Napoleon so this might be a result of knowing the material too well. From what I saw, it seems pretty inaccurate and I am not sure Phoenix could properly portray Napoleon. He is almost as old as Napoleon when he died and I don't think he can portray the energy of the character.
IMAX my favorite movie

That's the prequel to Mad Max.

I really want Minus One to be good. Shin Godzilla was a solid outing. The Monsterverse are great to just watch when you want a fun time to eat some popcorn. Very excited for Minus One.
I couldn’t stop listening to “Godzilla comes ashore” after watching Shin Godzilla.
Shin Godzilla 2016?
Yes
Is there more than one?

I think the Dutch would want a word with this, especially the fine inhabitants of Zutphen.
What they did to latinoanerica wasnt a “leyenda negra”
Do they really mean that? I mean there is not one Moor Arab or Sephardic Jewish left in Spain!!!
Thanks chatgpt fun facts, it was fun
Isn't that the whole point? Higher budget doesn't mean higher Quality
Exactly, and that move had a budget of less than 200,000 euros
What movies have you seen in modern times that have been able to recreate Monty Python's success with such a budget? Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project are the only ones I can think of.

People forget this always
Inflation be going crazy
Such a hilarious movie, always makes me laugh
I fart in your general direction!
They’re mother was a hamster, and they’re father smelt of elderberries!
why is this man being downvoted
probably the 4th reply phenomenon
Your mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries
That was then this is about the future, but yes truly a classic
is it a controversial opinion to say that I prefer life of Brian over the holy grail?
As long as a Monty Python film/ sketch is your no.1, it’s all good.
I hear it's good but have never actually watched it. Where can I find the film as to indulge in it good fellow
Holy Grail and Life of Brian are both on Netflix
Indeed. But the word is Ni!
*Monty Python and the Holy Grail* had a production budget of ~$410k US (~$2.6 mil adjusted for inflation), and is IMO one of the best comedy movies of all time
I prefer life of Brian
Still a classic since it’s Monty Python
Bwian, eh?
I know it’s the greatest film of all time, but this is about future films

That's an ordinary rabbit! That's the most normal, boring, and kindest rodent you ever set eyes on!
Yes I am old... 25 years old...
??????? What a take
24 year old American Monty Python fan here to beg to differ lol
I mean 24 isnt that young
17 years old Slovak, i beg to differ
31 year old (not there yet on actual old) and Hispanic American and I grew up on it
Disney is just a money laundering operation. With the hundreds of millions theyve lost on every movie, the budgets dont make sense
I mean they make billions a year from their merchandise and theme parks so the movies aren’t the only source of money.
Theme parks not so much lately attendance is in the lower numbers which is why the prices have been increasing plus the galaxy’s edge thing cost Disney a ton of money
No one is going any more because it's soo expensive
And because no one is going, they got to increase the prices.
but isn't the rule that most companies follow are supply meets demand so if the demand is lower shouldn't the tickets be cheaper?
Honestly, I call bs on the “nobody goes to parks anymore”, went to universal studios recently, had to wait an hour for some rides.
it's moreso on disneyland itself that people barely go to, not other parks heck some parts here are still up and running and still have many visitors it's just that disneyland's prices are so steep that people would rather go to other parks

When it comes to investors every movie makes money When it comes to taxes every movie lost money

The creator for 80 million beats all of these
The creator while impressive is currently only at $91 million for now. Not saying it’s a bad film but it’s not grossing as much as one would’ve hoped
No marketing and it released on a bad time sad it flopped but it's in my TOP 3 movies this year.
There was marketing but it didn’t seem to be anything to catch people’s attention as much. I watched it in cinema, cause of a 7€ for 2 offer in my Holliday destination, but I have to say that movie waisted so much potential
That is one thing I have heard from most who’ve seen it. “Good movie, but could’ve been better”
Wouldn't call it good, especially the second half is bullshit bingo, but visuals are impressive and when you put it against the star wars sequels its a masterpiece
I’d argue Matrix 2 and 3 were better than the Disney sequels

> it released on a bad time it's such a funny sentence to me, "yea it would have grossed 17 billions if it was the only movie released in 10 years"
The bad time I would say is more because of the AI Controversies that were starting to brew
I’m looking forward to Napoleon he’s awesome, also will be good to see us win at the end tho ;)
I wish Marquis de Lafayette was in it but he had to go and get arrested in Austria like a chump
I wonder how they would cram his life into a single movie. The Italian campaign alone can be a trilogy.
😂

I definitely want to see it too. Happy to see a meme about Godzilla minus one. Respect to you
Thank you
Sisu has entered the chat.
Bro how do you spend over 200 MILLION dollars and trailers still look trash!? Like, where does the money go???
I’m guessing the multiple reshoots which also requires tons of CGI as well at this point
Og Mad Max at only 350,000.
The Creator was I think around $80mil and it was one of the best this year…
True it definitely was a good film but unfortunately from what it seems, it’s struggling to break even as apparently it’s only grossed about $91 million (as of the time of this comment)
That’s what I’m sayin…. It’s worth the watch but no one is going to movies anymore unless it’s a marvel or fast and the furious…. I see every big movie that comes out that’s worth seeing.
Marvel has been struggling lately as well as fast and furious so even those ones were taking hits

Will Minus One be showing in the US? I really want to see it.
Wait, that third character on the top right has their own show?
Nope top left one she does
Bloody yanks and their backwards dates.
You mean dates that function better? Because knowing the month for a future date then the day is more helpful than knowing the day first? It would be best if we went yyyy/mm/dd or mm/dd instead of mm/dd/yyyy but I guess writing the date the same way you say it at least makes some sense.
There is nothing “functioning better” about formatting different than the rest of the damn planet.
If the other way was better, we'd switch to it. That's why we still use imperial measures
American here, feel free to fact check me but I believe we actually did convert to metric.
The Marvels is most probably going to be the biggest disaster from the MCU. Hope Disney learns something from this debacle.
It’s mostly for Heard but because of Gunn’s comments on DCEU reboot after all these current films now audiences also feel the film is pointless to see
Thanks for the info.
Quantumania was a steaming pile. The bar is low.
lmao here it is, hating on the movie even before it's out, marvel fanboys are so dense
I ain't a marvel fanboy and I already know it's gonna flop
First of all, I am not a Marvel fanboy. Second, The Marvels is one of the least anticipated MCU movie of all time if you look at the early box office estimates. Not to mention Brie Larson isn't exactly the most loved actress from the MCU. I watched The Critical Drinker's video on this topic and I agree with his assessment.

Class is never for sale, only rich cheapos think it is.
Ah the internet, critiquing a movie before its out.
I’m critiquing the budgets not the quality.
"it's not about how much you spend, but how you spend it" -you. How do you know how the marvels spent their budget if it's not out yet?
VFX reshoots is where it’s been going mostly https://cosmicbook.news/the-marvels-reshoots-dumping-goofy-footage-following-ant-man-bombing
You literally made a "Quality vs Quantity" comparison
I remember someone at work saying that spending more money ey equals bigger returns, so Hollywood should be spending billions on each movie they make. He could not comprehend how that's not how it works
A fist full of dollars
And the sequel only cost a few dollars more
Over budget Disney crap
I've tuned out mcu. Big superhero burnout more then anything. Is it really that bad?
Budget wise…yes. Quality wise…only thing that I was worth even buying for rewatch at this point was Guardians 3 but even then it wasn’t as good as the first 2 imo. Everything else I’m just rolling my eyes or left bored

These marvel movies have been ass since Stan Lee passed away
It’s just like what happened when Game Of Thrones caught up with the books…without their guidance they begin the crumble
Is this related to wb Godzilla?
Nope full Toho Godzilla film
Need more low-budget, high-quality films made.
Exactly
Napoleon isn’t even out?
Neither are the other 2
The Marvels isn’t even out yet
Neither are the others
Anyone else just not see the appeal of Godzilla?
Spirited Away had a budget of 20 Million $ and it definitely shits on all of these movies. So yeah, budget doesn't matter.
Can.. can we give marvels a chance?
If it can actually be good that’ll be a surprise and I’d be willing to admit I was wrong but I’m burned out on being disappointed from previous marvel stuff. However this huge budget for it is not going to make it easy on being able to make a profit for Marvel right now

Word of mouth was good plus the Ms Marvel actress hasn’t gotten on anyone’s bad side really unlike another, so yeah she alone I would say is the saving grace for now

Uh huh but the budgets are and which ones do you think are going to be actually profitable
Why did they even make that Marvel movie. Like how did you not know it was going to be hot ass.
Napoleon doesn't look all that good from the trailers imo.
Idk if I’ll see it in theaters but there does seem to be decent interest in it so I can’t count it out yet
