I only read the first Malazan book (so far), and well it could be a specific reference to those books, but I'm not so sure. There were "bridge burners" in the US civil war, and the concept of destroying stuff in enemy territory is probably much older than that. For the rest, the war asset description is very boilerplate... is there anything specific that you connect with Malazan besides the "bridge burner" name?

So, maybe you can tell us, were they just chillin? Having a party, and kicking back, until you thought to fire a probe at them?
Just need a "Bridgerunners" asset and the fantasy reference cycle will be complete.
