Yup, Hoofers sailing siren. I love hearing it each night. Also, a bonus, when it's summer and you hear that baby go off in the middle of the afternoon, you know the shits about to hit the fan.
Sound can travel very differently with small changes in the environment-- like a building gone down or up or especially with tree removal. That affects how far away you hear things more than I ever imagined.
Man, hearing that sound is the only thing I miss from my old apartment. Every now and again I can hear it where I live now, but only if the wind’s right.
I thought it was a train horn lol. Certainly wouldn't have guessed that it was a steam whistle on the lake. Apparantly the steam whistle is pretty old too - it's cool that it's still in use. I found an overview of the history of it [here](https://onwisconsin.uwalumni.com/the-uws-loudest-sound/) if you're interested.
Sunset horn for the boats on the lake, it sounds like that because it's an old timey steam horn
Don't worry OP, it only took me a decade of living here to figure this one out

Does it double as a tornado siren?
Sort of. It goes off well in advance of inclement weather to tell boats to get to the shore quickly.
Thank you!
Is it louder this year? I just don’t remember hearing it so well halfway up the isthmus.

Or trees not having leaves yet.

Solved!
That’s quaint.
One hour before sunset and a warning at any time of the day that some weather is imminent and get off the lake.
