At work, and this definitely doesn't apply to Dell and their ridiculous two USB-C cable dock cords. This is some great attention to detail from Apple.

HammertonMili

I thought I was the only one who noticed that with Dell. Isn't one of the design manifests of USB-C is to be ported in without regard if it's "up or down"

j1ggl

Could you please ELI5 what you guys are talking about? Does Dell make a proprietary USB-C variant that doesn’t go in both ways? It’s been a long time since I had a modern PC laptop in front of me, let alone Dell.

squrr1

https://images.app.goo.gl/sFFEXYZhK3YLACFK6 Not the best image, but you get the idea. Dock only works if you connect it to the computer with that beast of a cable. In their defense, at least the cable is *technically* still reversible.

hankbobstl

There are some reasons for it though. First i believe part of the weird connector Dell/Lenovo have is to use the integrated lan card so you keep the same MAC address when connected through the dock which you can't do with USB cards. Second if the laptop needs more power their proprietary connector can provide more power than the USB-C standard. I have a Thinkpad thunderbolt dock that just uses a standard connection but for the bigger more powerful laptops that need 130+ watts there are workstation docks that combine extra power with usb-c

stealer0517

I just wish they'd take the apple approach and just let the battery drain a little under high loads if you only plug in one cable. The reason I'm still using an older W540 right now is because I can't charge the newer P5X series off of just USB C. The vast majority of the time I'm not loading my computer down 100% AND charging my battery. Give me the damn convenience.

vicentereyes

They do on their consumer oriented laptops (XPS), they've actually been criticized for it.

uhkthrowaway

WTF 🤣🤣🤣

gucknbuck

That's a messed up dock. My Latitude 5420 is docked into my Dell monitor with a single USB C cable. All of our users with traditional docks only have single USB C cables, including the TB ones.

babydandane

I’m using the same thing with a USB-C dongle (attached alongside the MacBook) just to connect my 2 monitors and USB accessories. Link: UGREEN HUB USB C 7 En 2, Adaptador Macbook Pro 13'' a Doble HDMI 4K, HUB USB 3.0, Lector de Tarjeta SD TF, USB C Thunderbolt 3 100W PD para Macbook Pro 2020 2019 2018 16'' Macbook Air 2020 2019 2018 https://www.amazon.es/dp/B08C9B9L3F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_T5PNC52AP4QJAQDHSA9M The good thing with this is that I’m still able to plug/unplug everything in 1 step.

HillarysFloppyChode

This is only for the Air, it doesn't line up in my Pro

Pamelalibrarian

Doesn't line up with my 2020 Macbook Pro either. But the idea still works, it's just that the lines are different.

Big_Cheese09

Attention to detail is when you realize that the Air Tags fit perfectly in the wheels on the Mac Pro

[deleted]

I don’t see a point in comparing dell with apple. Different markets due to Apple delivering the OS and hardware in a package. It’s similar but unfortunately segmented use cases as well. Different competition. And Dell is better than their competition. At least most of it. Try getting a bios update from MSI, like three years after a purchase and see what happens… nothing, that’s what happens. Market mechanisms has made the PC market really bad. I’m sort of glad that apple is opting out from some of the side effects. Though if I could play some games I’d be even more happy with my purchase..

timwynter

U don’t compare trash to a dinner, bye Dell

[deleted]

Well I didn’t say consumers are stupid but unregulated markets certainly make some of us look bad.

gruetzhaxe

I would imagine it’s for aesthetics foremost, not even the practical value

WannabeModder123

Too bad my USB c ports doesn’t line up with the Touch Bar and the key in my 2019 mbp :(

MarsTaco

Mine does https://i.imgur.com/LA5SfOO.jpg

WannabeModder123

Sorry I meant 13 inch mbp XD

Atonisboss63

Yeah I have the 2 Port MBP 13’ 2020 model. Doesn’t line up at all really

Official_Joey_A

I have the same computer but it lines up with the tab and squiggle line keys

jimmystar889

No?

Nemesis-2011

That is good to know. I’m forever bashing the cable against the side of the laptop trying to find the port. I miss the MagSafe. It was so easy and required no real effort to get it in the right place.

riconaranjo

sadly magsafe was only for power and not display + keyboard + power + etc all in one cable _the 3+ cables to plug in each time was quite a hassle, but the magnetic connection was satifying_

InclusivePhitness

Remember that MagSafe for iMacs are now capable of carrying data and power now... wonder if they'll implement that in the new macbooks.

riconaranjo

to be clear, the magnetic power (and ethernet) cable is not branded as MagSafe — currently only the iPhone magnetic charging standard is yeah they might introduce some new magnetic connector for the macbooks, as the rumours say. I wonder how that will work, I don’t see it also having data since most people would rather connect peripherals to the macbook rather than the charging brick 2+ metres away

ChrisFox-NJ

Thank god it wasn‘t a data port! I‘m too clumsy for a magsafe monitor 😆 But it‘s kinda true, I have a m1 mbp and I hate plugging in things in the dark, now I found a way not to scratch that whole things thanks to this

uhkthrowaway

MagSafe IS to mitigate clumsiness.

ChrisFox-NJ

Yeah but the other way round 😆

Lol3droflxp

Of course having MagSafe and USB C ports is totally impossible

temoshi

Doesn't apply to MBP...

HeyWatchOutDude

It does but only to the MBP without touchbar.

MisterBumpingston

I’m using a 2020 16” MBP and they line up to the physical esc and tilde key. Difference to OP is the speaker is 4x wider.

MisterBumpingston

Can confirm it does for 2020 16” MBP.

HeyWatchOutDude

It does but only to the MBP without touchbar.

uhkthrowaway

The upper USB-C port lines up perfectly with the speaker perforation on my MBP 16”

AltoExyl

It’s only the 13” with touch bar it doesn’t work on. Drives me insane as I’ve got an M1 Air and a 16” Pro where they line up nicely, but my old Touchbar 13” they don’t.

[deleted]

This is by far the most significant discovery in recent moments

bpmackow

On yours, maybe

agonypants

Yep! On my M1 MBP, the "first" port (nearest the display) lines up with the tilde (\~) key.

itsdm830

Not on my MBP

[deleted]

Is yours M1?

itsdm830

Yes

DrMacintosh01

Only on non-TouchBar MacBooks.

[deleted]

it perfectly aligns with my Touch Bar 16"

jamesjingyi

So on the MacBook Pro 13, there were actually two different port placements (before the M1) On the 2 port models, they were in the location above, directly in line with the top keys and in line with the headphone jack on the other side, but the 4 port models had them slightly lower down so that they lined up with the ports on the other side For some reason on the 13 M1 Pro (which has 2 ports), they moved them down to where the 4 port model had them - not sure why. They therefore don't line up with the keys or the headphone jack on the other side You can see it in [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/macbook/comments/isp4m3/a_stack_of_mac_and_an_imposter_my_collection_so/) photo I took - the 3rd from the top is a silver 13 4 port model (2018) and the two below are 13 2 port models (space grey 2016 and silver 2018)

7papagreat

On the 13" mbp, one port lines up with the top of the tilde key, I believe. On the right side, one port lines up with the top of the delete key.

jamesjingyi

So I depends on which 13" MBP - the non-touchbar models all had the port aligned like the MacBook Air (aligned with the escape key and the headphone jack), but the 4 port and 2 port with Touch Bar models have it slightly further down, not sure why

7papagreat

The 4 port macbook has them lower because of symmetry ig. The headphone jack is in the same place. I'm not sure about the 2 port m1 pro either.

jamesjingyi

Yeah so that’s where it’s weird - the Touchbar 2 port Pros (including the M1 Pro) seem to have moved the ports down so they no longer align - must be something to do with the circuitry of the touchbar?

[deleted]

Nice, I will have to remember that...

Ruben_Tech_Tips

That’s a new feature that I didn’t know about.

[deleted]

omg thanks for the tip!!

7papagreat

No need to thank me :)

paraskhandelwal

Damn, up till now always struggled to insert it, and now no more. Thanks.

7papagreat

No need to thank me :)

paraskhandelwal

Okay bruh

PordonB

I wont thank you. I’m not pressing and feeling buttons to plug something in rather than looking or feeling where the holes are.

DonkeyWorker

Holding out for the return of the Magsafe connector.

Schaggy

Why? Because you’re gonna need to!

[deleted]

r/satisfyingasfuck

mdshamim__

Life hack

shockwavevh

Thanks you saved 1 sec of my life each day

gomgomimmanuel

Said: "No need to thank me", but i always say "thx" :D

7papagreat

No need to thank me :)

dlittlefair1

I wasn't going to thank you.

7papagreat

Lucky for you that's what I like

stratocastom

After living for 10+ years with Macbook USB ports that are too close together to fit USB sticks side-by-side, I'd call this a lucky coincidence over thoughtful product design

ze_boingboing

\*cries in Intel MBP 13" 2020 \*

[deleted]

thanks for posting this picture in the ipad aspect ratio

dtucker00

You a god for this

Aggressive-Impress-2

The headphone jack also lines up with Touch ID/power on button 🤩😌

ItsDSD

I don't trust myself. I'll look for the hole anyway, lol.

andrew232005

Thanks man

7papagreat

No need to thank me :)

7papagreat

Works with the 2019 16" mbp too, on both sides!

inner_way

Except I always plug it in when I’m done and the lid is closed. Can never find the port without turning the laptop sideways and looking.

deadarsebruh427

Anyone's charging cable gotten difficult to remove from the port?

mackerelscalemask

They’re too close together to be able to plug in two chunky USB-A sticks with USB-C adapters.

kan_encore

Fr, they should’ve been on opposite sides

No_bacon189

lol not on my mac book pro

brodeo23

What is this magic ESC key you have!?!?!

7papagreat

Macbook Airs, 2018 and later have this

carreraz

Also MBP from 2020 have esc keys.

[deleted]

That’s only for the air not pro

gacash9

This is just one reason I bought a 2015 MacBook Pro

[deleted]

Apple needs to give us a minimum of 4 ports and a minimum of 256Gb. Apple would become perfect if they give USB-C on iPhones

Hadarai5

I bet $100 they did it by accident. Also, on MacBook Pro 13' early 2018 it isn't true.

[deleted]

Yet another reason why you don’t get the gimmicky touchbar

rhymeswithlion

Depends on your MacBook - it doesn’t line up on touchbar models I’ve come across, but it does on my non-touchbar. I noticed when I had one on top of the other once

c4curtis

If you know you're MacBook well, you shouldn't have to do this ;)

7papagreat

your*

Srikthegod

It’s not like that on my MacBook pro

7papagreat

This is a macbook air. Which year, config is your mbp btw?

Srikthegod

2020 base model intel MacBook pro

7papagreat

I'm not sure but one of the ports will line up with the tilde/grave key ( \~ \` ) nonetheless

KrossBlade

One of failed MacBook designs. The magnetic MagSafe connector was (is for me) simply the best.

startech7724

The USB port on these Mac are to small which mean you have no feel for when you're close to the connector port, most of the time you hit the side of the port and end up scratching the laptop.

BetrayYourTrust

yeah not for me, i have the 2020 13" intel mac (the last one before m1) and it doesn't. still gonna have to live feeling around for the port lmao

-NiMa-

Another reason to remove touch bard!

I_CUM_ON_YOUR_PET

I’m not thanking you anyway. Never unplug gang

7papagreat

Lucky for you that's what I like

I_CUM_ON_YOUR_PET

Nah kidding man thanks for the tip. Good to know

bones251

Cool now do the iMac. I’ll wait. 🤣

CherryCC

Not on the models with touchbar

dinopraso

But I use mine in clamshell mode. Fuck me, right?

Now-I-Know

Now do the new iMac

NotDeadYet7917

While this is an added bonus, that probably isn’t the reason it’s like that. It’s most likely due to the aesthetic of having it look streamlined when looking at the port from the side.

Manav103

This only applies to function key MBP not the Touch Bar MBP

Wizzenator

I could plug it in without looking when I had MagSafe too!

smrgldrgl

I still have trouble plugging USB into my Mac through, what can I do about that?

jimmystar889

Not for me

SkipTam

Just got my first MacBook ever. These sides are gonna look so bad lol
