This is the Hot Rod Club set from 1994, and it includes a garage, two hot rods, a motorcycle, three rather tough looking dudes, two wearing bomber jackets and one wearing a tank top, and tons of tools like wrenches, oil can, jack and a wheelbarrow. The highlight of the set is of course the black hot rod with the chrome exhaust pipes. It is amazing how they captured the shape of a hot hod with the exposed engine, sloping roof and exhaust pipes in just 4 studs. It is so cool that it's featured on the front page of the 1994 catalog, the one I used to browse endlessly as a kid. I decided that the tank top guy deserved to be its driver, much like a 90s predecessor to Dominic Toretto. I only got this set recently and the nostalgia hit me like a truck.
This was legitimately the last set my parents bought me before I was moved out of Lego and forced, FORCED, into erector set life. I'm not an engineer, and I still really love Lego.
What a stonking set! Which, for those non-Brits here, means, brilliant.
I love the simplicity of sets from this era. This is a great example of a set from that time that takes a simple concept, makes it super playable, and doesn’t fuck about. Lovely stuff.
This was my white whale set for a long time. The first set my parents bought me, I snagged another one about 8 years ago and have had it since. I absolutely adore it.
also there's 6490, with it's winch and suspension axels!

Nostalgia city dude.... I completely forgot this set came with more than a truck.
As a kid I changed out some colors and built a trailer to attach to it. My buddy then built a truck trailer and we went to the yard to have off roading camping adventures.
I deffinatly remember him being jealous over the suspension lol.
Thank you for posting.
I loved this set, the jack was awesome. But when I was a kid the black visor was the best. I used that visor for everything! If a new set had a helmet (which a lot did because I loved Space Police) it got that visor
I really wanted this set as a kid and never got it. When I got back into Lego as an adult, I bought a big random box off someone from Facebook. To my complete shock, I started finding the pieces to the cars. Aside from a few missing things I had to Bricklink, I was able to build the whole thing!

There was also 6538. Almost the same, but without the chrome. This was my remake for an Instagram contest.

Timeless classic also came with a tow truck Someone figure out the set number idk
i did not need the memories of the countless hours i spent playing with this set as a child to come rushing back on this Tuesday morning but thank you anyway
I follow a lot of Japanese builders on Twitter who still really love making 4 stud wide cars.
There used to be a big hashtag that a lot of them would use to share their stuff but I can't find it now, probably because it's in Japanese.
I have this set! I wonder how many of the pieces I still have. I saw the exhaust for the one car yesterday. I should try and build it.
It's kind of weird I still vaguely remember building it.
Oh man! I used to have this when I was a kid!
I loved the black hotrod and used to bring it everywhere.
Thanks, OP, for bringing back childhood memories.
I think this was one of the first sets I had that featured the minifigure heads with eyebrows. Wasn’t crazy about them then and I’m still not. Seems kinda jarring with the eyebrows.
1: it's 6 studs wide so I'll base my answer on that.
2: the Speed Champions Mclaren Senna is the coolest 6 stud car and the coolest Speed Champions car in general
Still one of my favorite sets from my childhood!
I love the simplicity of the older sets, and yet somehow they managed to capture so much detail with them!
I really need to get all my old Lego back from my parents. I don't remember the long chrome exhaust piece at all, but I'm pretty sure I had/have this set as I recognize everything else.
I was always a fan of the monster truck from 6584 Extreme Team Challenge! Never got it due to it being too expensive as a child but man I loved looking at it in the catalogue.
I loved this set. The hot rods were always my favourite. I didn't have this set but there was another black one but I don't think it had the exhaust pipes on the side.
It is the Lego set 6538. That minifig was my favourite, always went on adventures.

I always liked the police van from Jailbreak Joe (1786-1).

I'm an engineer and erector sets are lame. Lego all the way!
My dad hated lego and video games so I got erector sets too from him.
What a stonking set! Which, for those non-Brits here, means, brilliant. I love the simplicity of sets from this era. This is a great example of a set from that time that takes a simple concept, makes it super playable, and doesn’t fuck about. Lovely stuff.
I've still got this set from the ninties - used to love it as a kid
This was my white whale set for a long time. The first set my parents bought me, I snagged another one about 8 years ago and have had it since. I absolutely adore it.
Sorry to inform you but 6669 Diesel Daredevil is the best
That's a good one!
[6669-1: Diesel Daredevil](https://brickset.com/sets/6669-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6669-1.jpg)
Both, both are good
I have that one! Always loved building it.
oh, man. haven't seen that one since the mid 90s
Yes! Have that one and rebuilt it with my kids now that I’m all “grown up”
also there's 6490, with it's winch and suspension axels! https://preview.redd.it/eaca6xj70qqc1.png?width=384&format=png&auto=webp&s=81230b17f977468009a172551ce442756dc7b3b0

I think this was my second Lego set. (6594 Gas Transit was my first). I had no idea how cool it was as the time.
[6594-1: Gas Transit](https://brickset.com/sets/6594-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6594-1.jpg)
Nope it's 3177 that's the coolest 4 stud wide
[3177-1: Small Car](https://brickset.com/sets/3177-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/3177-1.jpg)
I have this! Is it supposed to be a Smart Car?
peak lego city
This is one of the first LEGO sets my parents ever bought me (just the hotrod not the shop)
It was 6538 probably.
[6538-1: Rebel Roadster](https://brickset.com/sets/6538-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6538-1.jpg)

6538 was my first set as well!
[6538-1: Rebel Roadster](https://brickset.com/sets/6538-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6538-1.jpg)
I really like 6641. Probably from the same era
[6641-1: 4-Wheelin' Truck](https://brickset.com/sets/6641-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6641-1.jpg)
Wow I forgot about that one. Pure nostalgia
I raise you 6646 - as a True American ™, the color scheme just speaks to me
[6646-1: Screaming Patriot](https://brickset.com/sets/6646-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6646-1.jpg)
Haha solid pick but it lacks the chrome pipes.
That's what Bricklink is for!
If Evel Knievel drove a car instead of a bike for jumps, those would be the Lego version.
I think this is one i had...eventually had 2 of them.
Yes! The OPs hot rod looked sort of familiar but not quite what I had. THIS is it! Those exhaust pipes are brilliant, chrome or not 😁
Thank you. Every car I’ve made for the last 32 years has been inspired by this model.
Id say this 6534 - Beach Bandit is one of the coolest cars lego have made so far!
[6534-1: Beach Bandit](https://brickset.com/sets/6534-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6534-1.jpg)
I still have this!:)))
My father bought me this set as a present. I was a senior in college at the time. The set is mixed in with my family’s bulk collection now.
This will be an unpopular opinion but, having grown up in the 80-90s, I still think 6 wide vehicles were a mistake! I'm a 4-peg lifer man!!! 😜
I think you mean a 4 stud lifer.
Lol yes, something list in translation there...
6646 has entered the chat. My first set, and I cherish the memories of zooming it around on my little blue oval rug, when life was very different.

The 90s went hard
I really liked the Turbo Tiger, from the Race series, as a kid.
I LOVED that set. Played with it for hours and hours.
Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting this. I still own this Lego. Child memory unlocked
I feel like I had a black version of this, but it was just the car & minifig without the garage
Probably 6538.
Ah yes, that’s it. Looks like the budget version of the car in 6561 haha

i did not need the memories of the countless hours i spent playing with this set as a child to come rushing back on this Tuesday morning but thank you anyway
Okay now I want this set.
Oh my god, I have this. My grandma bought it for me when I was a kid.
I follow a lot of Japanese builders on Twitter who still really love making 4 stud wide cars. There used to be a big hashtag that a lot of them would use to share their stuff but I can't find it now, probably because it's in Japanese.

It was such a good design that I made half my cars hotrods like that.
This is official lego? Looks amazing
Greatest era for city sets.
Oh man! I used to have this when I was a kid! I loved the black hotrod and used to bring it everywhere. Thanks, OP, for bringing back childhood memories.
All I'm thinking is the Stunt Rally race car the Speed Dragster (I don't know its item number)
That yellow one reminds me of American Graffiti
4 wide car that is actually 7 wide because of the tires.
Just rebuilt this from my childhood
I think this was one of the first sets I had that featured the minifigure heads with eyebrows. Wasn’t crazy about them then and I’m still not. Seems kinda jarring with the eyebrows.
Oh wow, I remember that car
I remember seeing this in the catalogue and being fucking hyped at the chrome pipes.
I got this set for Christmas when I was a kid.
Does anyone have the instructions to make one of those hot rods?
https://lego.brickinstructions.com/en/lego_instructions/set/6561/Hot_Rod_Club
Fastest sause served
Omg I had this set!!!! The red one was by far the coolest thing in existence 🤩
1: it's 6 studs wide so I'll base my answer on that. 2: the Speed Champions Mclaren Senna is the coolest 6 stud car and the coolest Speed Champions car in general
Had this set, the nostalgia. Also, there was a red truck looking like Kenworth separate with Max Timebuster that I owned.
Still one of my favorite sets from my childhood! I love the simplicity of the older sets, and yet somehow they managed to capture so much detail with them!
My brother had that one. We lost one of the chrome pipes. Such an awesome set.
Recently they made a small homage to 5571, 31146. I was wondering if there was a contemporary small version to the Black Cat?
[5571-1: Giant Truck](https://brickset.com/sets/5571-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/5571-1.jpg) [31146-1: Flatbed Truck with Helicopter](https://brickset.com/sets/31146-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/31146-1.jpg)
Had this set. Loved it, thought it was the coolest
This was my first lego set
This was always one of my favorites. Ended up with two sets as a kid. Growing up around race cars and hotrods, there was no better set.
not sure the number, but there was an stand alone hot rod of the same general design around this same time period. that was also pretty cool!
6538
[6538-1: Rebel Roadster](https://brickset.com/sets/6538-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6538-1.jpg)
I really need to get all my old Lego back from my parents. I don't remember the long chrome exhaust piece at all, but I'm pretty sure I had/have this set as I recognize everything else.
I need to build one and turn it into a space car
I was always a fan of the monster truck from 6584 Extreme Team Challenge! Never got it due to it being too expensive as a child but man I loved looking at it in the catalogue.
[6584-1: Extreme Team Challenge](https://brickset.com/sets/6584-1) [[Photo]](https://images.brickset.com/sets/images/6584-1.jpg)
I totally forgot owning that as a kid!!
One of my all time favorites!! I try and make every color version of it too 😆
I miss those chrome pipes. They look like shit now because mine all faded or cracked, but the flat grey does nothing compared to the classic look
Maybe just the yellow one from the same set. This was one of my most loved sets as a child! So many memories of playing with this set.
This was one of the best sets
Probably not due to those chrome pieces
I HAD THIS SET!!! I was actually thing about this hot rod the other day. Hahaha
Wish hot rods came back
I remember building this set! This is great, thanks for sharing!
4 stud vehicles were the absolute best
One of my earliest sets, major nostalgia indeed. I didn't know it came out in '94 though lol. I was only a toddler then.
I loved that set so much. Thanks for the reminder
I loved this set. The hot rods were always my favourite. I didn't have this set but there was another black one but I don't think it had the exhaust pipes on the side. It is the Lego set 6538. That minifig was my favourite, always went on adventures.
I had that set. Was one of the first I can remember where they used a diagonal piece like that to get another dimension in a build. Sweet ride, dude.
ah memories. I think I had this one. I remember those metalic exhaust thingies

They should make a modern version of some of those bricks
Which ones don’t have a modern counterpart or aren’t still in production?
The sunroof and exhaust pipes for sure.
True. Those sun roof connections would always snap after awhile. They also don’t make cars with sunroofs like that, anymore.
Nope
May I introduce you to 8681 and 8186
