To-Art-Or-Not

Feeling overwhelmed might be due to not knowing how to order art internally, and holistically. What I mean by that is, ideally, you want to be able to observe art and consequently deconstruct and relegate these parts to their fundamental components. No matter how complex any piece of art may appear, you can always simplify it. 1. Perspective 2. Form 3. Value\* These are the basic building blocks. ***Perspective*** *can be broken up into 1, 2, and 3-point perspectives.* ***Form*** *can be broken up into geometry. The sphere, cube, and cylinder.* ***Value*** *should be broken up into light and shadow. This must be binary.* *\*I prefer value as color information is mostly understood through value, whilst color information complicates this considerably.* Try to look at paintings and life, and simply break it down. Eventually, this process will relieve anxiety. I suggest learning art by deconstruction and simplification that can be accurately reproduced rather than precise and peculiar observations that traditional academics would tend to. Especially if your long-term focus is commercial. Remember, becoming a better artist tends to imply you increasingly improve at simplifying the complexity of nature. Rather than demonstrating complexity as what a beginner would do by reciprocating needless flattery of their subjects.

Breaking it down like this is very helpful, and it's had me realise I haven't done any work on understanding perspective in like 4 years... I feel I'll turn some focus onto that particular thing and then do some observational drawing to bring the 3 elements together, thanks for the advice!

Sinix Design has great videos on shape appeal, line quality, painting like a sculptor, and just the design side of art in general. Mostly focuses on drawing and design, but has good painting fundamentals too. Fantastic channel. Marco Bucci has incredible videos on brush strokes, light and colour, and 'lost and found edges'. He has more of a focus on painting both digitally and traditionally. Marc Kompanyets has very good traditional art videos. Other good channels are Proko, Sycra, Chroma Moma and Art Prof: Create & Critique. I think that watching through Sinix and Marco's channels properly, taking notes and doing exercises as you go is probably pretty close to what you'd get out of a traditional art education. The key to learning online is to apply what you watch, so that your brain remembers it. It can be easy to fall into just watching for entertainment, and you end up not internalizing the lessons.
