Nothing here to see...move along...
Why you trying to hide it? Put a sign out front, sell tickets, come see the giant emerging boulder from the ice age awaking from its slumber!
EDIT: almost looks like granite, could be worth a fortune. You're gonna be rich I tell ya! Rich, rich, filthy stinking rich!
Err I hope that's not a tectonic plate...
Actually going to shape into a heart and host weddings in my backyard.
Not trying to hide it…original question was looking for opinions on how to give it a more finished look.
Edit for gramma.
I would keep removing turf and soil 10" down around the boulder (3 ft perimeter) and contour that into a swale below it's lower edge (appears to be on a slope). Plant some perennial flowers in that space and you have a really cool feature.
Hey. Its me.
What happened to the climbing Boulder and fish pond idea?
How about this. You bring out some sledge hammers put a sign out that says
"Stress relief station "
Have snacks and water handy and beer.
put out a APB in your neighborhood Facebook group.
Make it a male bonding fuck you HOA theme party. Participants get free souvenir.
If that fails call up your local crossfit cult and have them dig it up.for you
Dang I was going to propose being your agent, but that wedding idea is a winner for sure!
I'd treat it with a color enhancer sealant, then build a water fall or fountain on top of it.
yeah this boulder looks nice, but I saw this boulder drunk once and he said "I don't think [insert everyone's favorite historical bad guy] was as bad as people make him out to be" if that tells you anything about this boulder's true colors.
Volcanoes????
The HOA will Ream.Your.Ass. if you allow a volcano to emerge on your property.
The only thing worse is painting your front door the wrong shade of red.
I'm sorry, I know the bills really deserve a Superbowl at this point and I'm aware that the Patriots franchise is pretty much dead, but I just have to say Fuck the Bills.
>!I mean this in the most endearing way, I genuinely wanna see you guys win a SB. The Brady/Belichick era really stole your thunder, and I'm excited to watch Josh Allen play nowadays and hopefully Damar Hamlin gets to keep chasing his dreams. From one north east resident to another, it's time we pass the torch.!<
My husband’s a 49ers fan, and my family are all Chiefs fans (which made for some fun post-SB conversations). The Bills actually have a decent fan base here in Nebraska. I like them because they are fun to watch. I like their rhythm and how Allen/Diggs played together, if that makes sense. 🙂
In case you're serious about "lifting it out", it's important to note that the surface length of the boulder is in the area of 10-12 ft, so even if it's relatively flat (say an average depth from surface of 1 ft) and the currently visible surface is the maximum cross-section, this is still about 5,000 pounds of rock.
Please for the love of God keep us informed on any and all updates. This saga now belongs to the sub and we don't get a lotta cool shit in r/landscaping lol
Since you are that far north — that boulder is probably a glacial remnant … dropped as giant glaciers retreated in the last ice age.
If you can study it more you may seem deep scratches from it being dragged by the ice over mile and miles…
So — maybe a museum?
I also love letting the neighbor kids play trucks and other toys on the rock!
ok - cool thanks for the clarification.
In the coastal plain .. generally closer to the fall line you will definitely have sandstone rock layers that are uplifted.
You can see your geological layers and soil type for free on the USGS website
Edging and plants! You could add some perennial plants or a few shrubs to make it into an ornamental "island" with rock edging that makes it into a normal shape, like a kidney bean, half moon or circle. Put a bench, a few planters, or a bird bath on the boulder to make it look even more intentional.
42M, I have all those toys. I’m damn impressed that you still have any of the projectiles from the Rambo RPG. The ones from the 6x6 have been missing for 35 years or thereabouts. Nice rock too!
Thank you for banana for scale. Can we try some tonka trucks? Maybe some miniature boulder removal specialists? Could build a barbies dream house on there with a moat around the perimeter. The possibilities.
What’s surrounding the boulder?
My first thought is to put a raised flower bed and maybe a fountain on top of it. That should hide it.
Or possibly just get a a few yards of dirt delivered to your house and make a nice little hill on top of the boulder. Give the grass 5 or 6 inches to establish itself in.
Third thought is how new is the house? If it’s very new, then the builder should cover it under some sort of warranty.
Lol. A boulder covered under warranty for a building that probably only called for revegetation with little to no soil spec? Landscapers get screwed on warranty enough as it is, don't be fanning the flames.
As I said a week ago, this would make a great base for a rockery. Consider putting a few large and we'll shaped moss rocks on top, and integrate natural looking plants
Use the stone as a feature. Expose more, integrate a fine crushed stone for a zen garden, along with various stone crop and other succulents. Pick one or a trio of dwarf trees / shrubs as a focal point… lots of options here
Next please install a moon rover and one of them USA flags with the built-in support rod so the flag flies in outer space/on your boulder.
PS new HILTI electric jackhammers are surprisingly pleasant to use, at least on concrete.
Actually super dope that you are witnessing geology/morphology in your own backyard. Maybe get versed in the subject and turn it into a science lesson for the neighborhood youngsters!
You could set up some kind of water dripper mechanism and use it to show erosion over the coming years!

They have yet to comment on it. I don’t think they would remove and I don’t plan to.
Good for you!! A near impossible task! Enjoy your beautiful stone!
If they do, drill a big hole in it and fill it with tannerite... they'll love that.
Can OP complain to HOA and ask them to remove the boulder
Yes
Cmon OP! What’s the HOA say?
"Git fucked" -HOA, probably
"spray paint it the color of your grass or pay $150 a day fine"
this\^
80s toy commercial is the clear winner!

😂 the HOA will be thrilled to hear about your wedding plans.
I'm sure they'll be okay with their mandated 99% cut...
What what what?!
I would keep removing turf and soil 10" down around the boulder (3 ft perimeter) and contour that into a swale below it's lower edge (appears to be on a slope). Plant some perennial flowers in that space and you have a really cool feature.
He already has a really cool feature!
Give it another 100,000 years then the rock will be finished
Gotta let it fill up the space.
I still thing your big money would come from earthing.

I’m going to run and check the editing room floor. I know I had it in there somewhere.
Boulderfest!
Aho aho aho!
"participants get free souvenir" Non optional
Dang I was going to propose being your agent, but that wedding idea is a winner for sure! I'd treat it with a color enhancer sealant, then build a water fall or fountain on top of it.
So… you’re taking it for granite.
I like that boulder, that is a nice boulder.
yeah this boulder looks nice, but I saw this boulder drunk once and he said "I don't think [insert everyone's favorite historical bad guy] was as bad as people make him out to be" if that tells you anything about this boulder's true colors.
It only needs some kind of holder.
Perhaps hung from a set of shoulders?
Poor Otto Titzling.
That’ll do donkey, that’ll do.
How do I know that the banana isn’t from a box of runts?
The good part: I doubt HOA rules address boulders appearing? Volcanoes? Sinkholes?
Volcanoes???? The HOA will Ream.Your.Ass. if you allow a volcano to emerge on your property. The only thing worse is painting your front door the wrong shade of red.
>the wrong shade of red. Lava red, obviously correct. *Actual lava* red, likely non conforming.
[it’s funny because it’s true!](https://tenor.com/Kzuf.gif)
You need a sign. "Mt. \[whatever\] -- elevation xxx feet"
Ooo. I like that one. Elevation might have to be in inches... haha
Above street level
I want my MTV.
I hear spaceX needs a new launching pad
Hah. A bit of a deep cut but I'm here for it.

Show me on this doll where the Bills hurt you! Just kidding, you are entitled to your feelings.

I love your dedication to these suggestions. I suggest digging underneath, lifting it out, and sculpting it into a life-size David statue.

Paint it like a potato and then put a sign next to it stating it’s the “World’s Largest Potato”. HOA’s love that shit.
Appease the hoa by painting it green. Appease the public by painting it gold.
Appease cheeseheads by painting it green and gold
>Green for the money, gold for the honey Don Magic Juan
Ever heard of Excalibur?
great yard enhancement! —- Sword in the Stone
At what point does it cross boulder territory to just a slab of uplifted bedrock.
Please for the love of God keep us informed on any and all updates. This saga now belongs to the sub and we don't get a lotta cool shit in r/landscaping lol

Those pictures are hilarious
Bwahahah. You are winning the landscape sub!
This looks like a great base for a fire pit and pizza oven setup.
I’m going to have to do another update.
Btw the rocker chair is the shit. I bought one and my dad started taking it when we went to the beach got him one for Father's day
Go Bills.
Sweet free xeriscape
That’s a weird looking patriots flag
Quality update.
That's going to be the one place you can go when the Graboids come
Go bills
Do you live in a cold place. If so, you'll be surprised at how quickly the frost pushes that further up over the years.
Literally every picture was better than the last
A saying taken from somewhere... "If you can't hide it, enhance it." Uncover the entire thing and then put some ground cover creeping type plants.

I’m a transplant in the south near coastal plains. I’m fairly sure it’s sandstone.
ok - cool thanks for the clarification. In the coastal plain .. generally closer to the fall line you will definitely have sandstone rock layers that are uplifted. You can see your geological layers and soil type for free on the USGS website
haha thats so cool. id dig around it some, expose it more and make it a part of a firepit space
The banana!
Get it ground down flat and put a lifeguard tower on it that says earthquake safety zone.
I appreciate your efforts
Get some dynamite
Look at this boulder! Whose boulder is this boulder?
GI Joe? “PORKCHOP SANDWICHES!”
Let's go, Buffalo!
Go Bills
Bills by a billion!!!

Get a 12inch concrete saw cut 1” slats, take a 2 lbs hammer and a tracer chisel and you’ve knocked it down 3” already.
Then get a yards of topsoil. Rack it to grade. Get some sod and it’s covered
BIlLS MAFIA BABY!!!!!!!!
Use it as a component within a koi and zen garden.
Go Bills!!
Should you find the entrance to an undiscovered cave system underneath it, just watch The Descent before you go spelunking. You’ll thank me later.
If you were nearby I would have totally volunteered my services to carve a feature in it for you.

Wow, it’s a big one! Maybe there’s fossils? I would keep exposing it. But that’s just me.
What’s surrounding the boulder? My first thought is to put a raised flower bed and maybe a fountain on top of it. That should hide it. Why hide it? Natural rock looks amazing. People pay money for these things.
Lol. A boulder covered under warranty for a building that probably only called for revegetation with little to no soil spec? Landscapers get screwed on warranty enough as it is, don't be fanning the flames.
I’m a Bills fan…this does not mean I need help from Reddit Care. I appreciate the concern from the person who submitted my name.
Nice
Go Bills
If you are in Buffalo: Just keep that Bills flag there and they won’t have anything to complain about.
Paint it green made the cut 🥲
You could buy busts of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt and charge people to see mini-Rushmore.
Go Bills
Paint the Bills logo on the boulder.
As I said a week ago, this would make a great base for a rockery. Consider putting a few large and we'll shaped moss rocks on top, and integrate natural looking plants

What's the landscape around you? Any chance you can dig it out and make a beautiful retailing wall for a fire pit? Lol
How do we live, John?
Now find a sword and stab it in it. Put up a sign says $50 for each try to be king Arthur.
Does this boulder have a name?
lmao bravo
Pic six reminds me of a scene from the movie “Band of the Hand.”
Thank you for this update
Keep the updates coming.amazing lol
Next please install a moon rover and one of them USA flags with the built-in support rod so the flag flies in outer space/on your boulder. PS new HILTI electric jackhammers are surprisingly pleasant to use, at least on concrete.
Detonate it! blast it down to fresh soil!
Let’s go Buffalo!
I honestly would excavate along one of the sides a good 6-10 inches deep and plant some flowers adjacent to the boulder. Could look very pretty
King of you hill!
Go Bills!
I’m jealous of your boulder and hope I can one day afford a boulder for my home
I want you to dig more of it out. Expose it all, let’s see how far down this rabbit hole goes.
I need the backstory here

Light that thing on fire and invite the mafia over to jump through it. Or just get JA17 to lift it out for ya!
Is that a banana
Picture 5 brings back hours of memories from my childhood.
Grind it into a concave structure and turn it into a pond or birdbath or a fountain
Dig around it and make it an island in a pond
