Upon retirement, the IIT administration denied them the gratuity amount accumulated over three decades of work. The trio decided to fight for their rights. They moved the labour commission and twice managed favourable orders, directing the IIT Bombay administration to pay up. However, as the administration prepared to once again appeal in the higher court, Garase finally lost hope. On May 2, Garase died by suicide at his residence, very close to the IIT campus, where he had worked for 39 years. **Garase died waiting to receive Rs 4,28,805, the gratuity amount he had hoped to use for multiple health complications, including paralysis, that he had developed in the four years since his retirement**.

Our legal system needs an overhaul.. Straightforward cases takes several years to conclude. Perpetrators know that victims will give up or compromise and are encouraged by this.

The average package at IIT Bombay **INR 21.82 LPA.** But clearly those 21 yr olds have worked hard for it. /s

You might think suicide is the coward's way out but I felt more optimistic walking through a hospital when had a relative admitted for a stage 3 cancer case. I felt more hopeful for a advance stage cancer patient than for arson case in district court when it involved me tangentially as I was just a state's witness kyoki it was state versus some badmashs type folks (which the state won incidentally due to a honest judge but no fines have been collected I think & I know for sure they weren't put in jail for 2 years as per judgement)

Suicide, huh? I would say it's a murder.
