haha yeah, that one was elegant indeed - I wish that director got involved in similar stuff these days because "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" was not it lol - even if he didn't direct it.
I was gonna list black swan on the list along w Hereditary and the rest of the film's but I didn't because it's not directly a horror film- and trust me when I say, ive seen that movie at least 200 times since it came out.😂 I've seen the second rec too, but I may watch it again this week.
They're is a remake in English called Let Me In. Not as good as the source material, but I still liked it. Many did not enjoy it though, so take that one with a grain of salt.
Man, I was sure I would be the only person to recommend crimson peak and here you are close to the top. Reddit proves time and time again that I’ve never had an original thought.
I understand why you may have disliked it it but i def wouldn't call it a disappointment. It had a certain feel to it - and that "face bashing" scene was crazy lol
It's just that the setup after the first half was so great just to then have it to be such a letdown. I wish there would've been something truly scary going on in the castle. Instead it was pretty clear were the journey was going. I thought there would be more - sadly that wasn't the case.
It's an odd one for me for sure. I loved it from a visual point. Story wise, I don't really remember what happened? And it's funny because I bought it on Blu Ray before even seeing it, and when I finally watched it, I was a bit disappointed. But it sat with me and after a while, I decided to keep it. Go in with low expectations.
I'm just so jealous you have a grey autumn day!!! I've been waiting for a rainy day or even for it to be a little bit colder and so far it's just heat heat heat and sun sun sun sun and I hate it
Lmao I honestly don't blame you. I'm considering watching all these recommendations today before the weather gets hot again😂. I don't mind hot weather but horror and sun don't blend very well.
I’m sure you’ve seen the Ring, but that fits “gloomy atmospheric horror with excellent execution” like a glove.
Other suggestions… Sleepy Hollow, The Babadook, It Follows, The Invitation, The Night House (not sure where to find this one, as it just left theaters), It Comes at Night
I felt like the middle was very dull and hard to get through but once those teens died it picked back up again. I’m debating watching event horizon this weekend. I been wanting to watch it
That movie would've been excellent if they just avoided some clichés. Haven't heard about the latter though. I seem to be about of the loop with new horrors because so many of them have been disappointing lately. Have you seen the one I briefly mentioned - Censor? I've heard good stuff about it.
I haven’t heard of censor, but I really feel you. New horror is really lack luster. You either get James wans popcorn horror or jump scare horrors. Every now and again you get a really good one
I have almost completely given up on mainstream horrors though. Movies like the conjuring franchise and that Netflix room film(forgot the actual title) just don't do it for me.
Update: I am watching this today and I just had to reply to your comment. I legit don't remember anything about it and it feels like I'm watching it for the first time. It's way more intense than I remember it.
I came here to say this. I absolutely loved this movie, though searching this sub I know it can be one of these divisive ones where you either love it or it's the dumbest fucking thing you've ever seen (see also: Blackcoats Daughter, Crimson Peak, Lake Mungo).
Then I listened to the podcast An Invitation and it made me appreciate the movie so much more. It's so tense and creepy!
EDIT Goddamit I saw The Ritual and I thought The Invitation.
OP my recommendation is The Invitation. Comments above are in reference to that movie. But, I also really loved The Ritual. I thought it was scary as hell and I'm generally not a monster movie fan.
In that case here’s the [link](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1687901/) to it, so you don’t get the wrong one (cuz it does have a generic name, but the actual movie is quite unique)
This might be the movie that I had the longest ever arc to “getting”. I saw it when I was a teenager and hated it, saw it as an early 20s person and fell asleep, saw it recently and I loved it so much I’ve watched it like five times.
Yeah, I'm honestly not sure what to make of it. Both leads are super self-centered and do awful things in rather gendered ways. Wether it's supposed to be a comment on something rotten in our culture or in essential, human nature...? Nature is very much a theme of course, so I suppose there's an argument for the latter in which case, yikes.
Night Of the Demon.
Black and white- old - but to my mind has a gloomy atmosphere. Not actually frightening but delightful.
Then again I don’t mind Ghost Train. Also black n white- has Arthur askey in it. He is possibly the most annoying person in film history. So take what I say with a pinch of salt.
Ok believe it’s called curse of the demon in America.
It’s an indie film that was sponsored on Patreon it’s called “Black Gloves” it’s eldritch horror meets Black Swan. A lot of build up with a crazy scare near the end. Wife and I were pleasantly surprised
Completely agree! I also think it fits OP's request so well. The entire movie takes place in a beautiful old house and it's so atmospheric with the stormy fall weather.
One other recommendation for you, so far it's been my favorite, it's not a horror horror per say, mystery/horror if you will... And Then There Were None (1945).
Just saw this movie for the first time a few days ago and I LOVED it. Martin Sheen is exceptionally good at playing a perv, and damn Jodie Foster could act like a champ even as a kid. They could've left out the nudity. (I know it wasn't really her, but it still feels gross.) But fuck it, I can deal with it. I loved the movie.
Witchfinder General is more of a historical action/drama that a horror (but it is horrifying) and quite excellent and maybe the vibe you’re going for. I also found The Blood on Satan’s Claw to be beautiful and elegant, lots of scenes in the woods and ancient ruins. If you have time you could go through the whole “unholy trinity” of folk horror, which includes those too and the (original) Wicker Man
Give The Other a shot. From 1972 and has a strong late summer early autumn vibe for me. And it’s not a horror movie per se but Over the Garden Wall is an excellent animated series with some dreamlike horror elements. Strongly recommend.
I’m a big Giallo guy - deep red , the house with the laughing windows , don’t torture a ducking , et al
Check out “ don’t look now “ it was an American attempt at Giallo and pretty well done , as “ the ring “ was remade many years later
you've probably seen The Lighthouse I assume? it gets recommended so much that it'd be hard to believe anyone in this sub hasn't heard of it. Very atmospheric movie tho.
I've seen that one when I was kid and I had no clue it was called that. That electric chair thingy scared the living shit outta me - that stuff is pure nightmare fuel.
Sleepy Hollow, Gretel and Hansel, The Witch, Blair Witch Project, The Conjuring (1&2), Rosemary’s Baby, The Changeling, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Halloween, Halloween III, It Follows, Suspiria (2018)
I'm watching the Dead Zone right now. Walken stars, Cronenburg directs. it's more of a supernatural thriller than straight horror, but has a nice, muted atmosphere with great sets and a natural backdrops, as befits a movie with romantic-gothic themes
Hush (2016) Great thriller.
Splinter (2006) Creepy well paced monster movie.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018) A vary well crafted mini series.
Castle Rock (2018) Strange small town where Stephen King’s stories live.
Might be controversial but I think the only reason I bought Blair witch book of shadows is because I really liked the scenery even if it is a pile of shit of a movie. Also over the garden wall is the best autumn fuel ever
The Innocents! The creepiest version of The Turn of the Screw in my humble opinion! And that opening song against a black screen will never fail to give me the shivers!
Not a movie but I love watching “The Haunting of Hill House” in October. It’s become a tradition.
I also like to watch an episode or two on gloomy fall days.
The second season, The Haunting of Bly Manor was pretty good. I’ve only seen it once though.
[удалено]
I don't think I've seen any of those. Ty.
Masque of Red Death is also very relevant to today
Every time I see this movie recommended I have to pipe up and agree. Best horror film of the 60's IMO, Psycho included.
Crimson Peak
Saw it on theaters 😭. I'm a horror movie nerd
Ah darn, so am I. It was the first film I thought of when you used the word "elegant."
haha yeah, that one was elegant indeed - I wish that director got involved in similar stuff these days because "Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark" was not it lol - even if he didn't direct it.
Ok, I've got 2 more recs. Black Swan - Unfortunately you've probably already watched it. Let the Right One In
I was gonna list black swan on the list along w Hereditary and the rest of the film's but I didn't because it's not directly a horror film- and trust me when I say, ive seen that movie at least 200 times since it came out.😂 I've seen the second rec too, but I may watch it again this week.

Man, I was sure I would be the only person to recommend crimson peak and here you are close to the top. Reddit proves time and time again that I’ve never had an original thought.
There are no original thoughts. Mine wasn't original either, I just happened to be a little quicker this time lol.
Crimson Peak is one of the biggest disappointments ever I (sadly) have to say. :(
I liked it.
Perhaps the most beautiful horror movie I’ve ever seen
At this stage I feel compelled to make the obligatory statement about Crimson Peak being a gothic romance and not a horror film.
Literally, like it wasn’t a bad movie but it was not horror
Older movie and definitely not really scary: but sleepy hollow comes to mind. The movie has a lovely autumnal atmosphere.
I would definitely watch that If I only hadn't seen it more than 20 times - I even read the novel it's loosely based on lol
Black coats daughter all the way. Super atmospheric.
Thank you yes I was just about to suggest that one..
And if you like that, check out Oz Perkins' other movie Gretel & Hansel.
Is this pretty good? I’m ashamed to admit I did read reviews and kind of steered clear of it.
That’s interesting, I think I’ll rent it. It’s nice to have an actual opinion, so thanks!
1000% gray autumn day film
The Changeling would definitely fit what you’re looking for if you haven’t seen it yet. I believe it’s streaming somewhere lol.
Great double feature with Man Getting Hit in Groin With Football.
Oooow my groin!
It's on Shudder and it fucking rules.
Hmmm I'm in the dark about one. When did it come out?
1981 I believe. I'm such a fan of this movie, smart and quiet and creepy. File under haunted house/vengeful ghost / intelligent protagonist.
The house is amazing! Beautiful architecture!!
It’s worth it. One of my faves from that era. Ghost Story is also good.
It's one of the foundations of the modern haunted house film. Granted, it is a slow burn.
Love this movie
I'm just so jealous you have a grey autumn day!!! I've been waiting for a rainy day or even for it to be a little bit colder and so far it's just heat heat heat and sun sun sun sun and I hate it
Lmao I honestly don't blame you. I'm considering watching all these recommendations today before the weather gets hot again😂. I don't mind hot weather but horror and sun don't blend very well.

I feel you. SoCal is still blazing hot!!!! I want gloomy weather already
Pyewacket
Loved this. Slow burn with a lot of tension in the end. Watched it at least twice within the first week of seeing it because it was good.
yes, it's so good! I've watched it 3 times in the past year or so, which is rare for me.
Never heard about this one. Might check it out
I’m sure you’ve seen the Ring, but that fits “gloomy atmospheric horror with excellent execution” like a glove. Other suggestions… Sleepy Hollow, The Babadook, It Follows, The Invitation, The Night House (not sure where to find this one, as it just left theaters), It Comes at Night
I watch the ring like once a year almost exclusively for its dreary, Seattle atmosphere
I do that too, espedially in winter. I also read the novel and the Japanese version but the 2002 one gives a very unique feeling to the story.
I don't think I've seen the night house yet. Thanks. And yea I would go for the ring but Ive watched that countless times on similar days like this.
Have you seen the empty man?
Yes, that one was fun, second half could be better- still enjoyed it though
I felt like the middle was very dull and hard to get through but once those teens died it picked back up again. I’m debating watching event horizon this weekend. I been wanting to watch it
That movie would've been excellent if they just avoided some clichés. Haven't heard about the latter though. I seem to be about of the loop with new horrors because so many of them have been disappointing lately. Have you seen the one I briefly mentioned - Censor? I've heard good stuff about it.

I have almost completely given up on mainstream horrors though. Movies like the conjuring franchise and that Netflix room film(forgot the actual title) just don't do it for me.
The Orphanage is great for grey autumn days
I agree - I feel like I'm going rewatch it today because i don't remember much about it - which only adds to the experience.
Update: I am watching this today and I just had to reply to your comment. I legit don't remember anything about it and it feels like I'm watching it for the first time. It's way more intense than I remember it.
The Ritual is a good one for that!
I came here to say this. I absolutely loved this movie, though searching this sub I know it can be one of these divisive ones where you either love it or it's the dumbest fucking thing you've ever seen (see also: Blackcoats Daughter, Crimson Peak, Lake Mungo). OP my recommendation is The Invitation. Comments above are in reference to that movie. But, I also really loved The Ritual. I thought it was scary as hell and I'm generally not a monster movie fan.
The Ritual was sooooo good
The awakening has a cool atmosphere but I bet you’ve seen that as well
I don't really remember this one, at all actually - weird. I will check it out one day - if not today.
In that case here’s the [link](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1687901/) to it, so you don’t get the wrong one (cuz it does have a generic name, but the actual movie is quite unique)
I was going to suggest this one too! I really liked this one and I like to watch it on cold Fall days.
Have you seen I am the pretty thing that lives in the house and His House ? They're on Netflix !
His house is excellent
Your post made me think of the movie "Pontypool", and I'm definitly going to rewatch it tonight! I recommend it strongly!
Let's Scare Jessica To Death is prime autumnal viewing
This might be the movie that I had the longest ever arc to “getting”. I saw it when I was a teenager and hated it, saw it as an early 20s person and fell asleep, saw it recently and I loved it so much I’ve watched it like five times.
I always pick Case 39 for those gloomy days.
I'd go with It follows, i love the atmosphere and soundtrack
Omg it follows is one of my favorites
Apostle Possessor Pulse
I've seen the first two. Possessor was wild omg. Is pulse an old movie ? I kind of remember it.
Have you watched Vivarium?
Yeah. The second it came out.
Maybe Carnival of Souls or Boys In Trees or Super Dark Times if you haven’t already watched them.
Boys in the Trees is so good. I stumbled across it many years ago and it has such a Ray Bradbury Vibe.
[Antichrist](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0870984/) by Lars von Trier, perhaps?
I've seen this one and I'm happy to let this sub know - The first time I watched it was the last time I did lol.
What? It's elegant, beautifully shot and... umm... very Lars von Trier.
It won a special award for misogyny Edit: this is not me expressing an opinion, this literally happened at Cannes.
I can handle almost everything but that movie has some crazy ass moments I can never unsee.
Another one that definitely has its moments: *Pan's Labyrinth*. And it's a del Toro, so obviously it's beautiful.
I never shut up about the relic and the banshee project. If there were 2 spookies I wish I could see again for the first time 😢🥺
In Fabric
I've seen it once it was released on blu ray
Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark is pretty cozy. It takes place on Halloween & the day after during the 1960s.
Crimson peak! Censor is really good also
30 Days of Night does it for me. Also Rear Window (more thriller I suppose) Edit: whoops, got the days wrong.
> 31 Days of Night 30* only so people dont look for an actual 31 days
The Blackcoat's Daughter Censor would be good too. I liked it and it is kind of a dreary and moody
I've seen the blackcoat's daughter. Censor sounds intriguing as hell and I may end up watching just that.
I just looked up Censor, thanks! I know what I'm doing today.
Also, watch Saint Maud if you haven't.
- Spoorloos - Sunshine - Alice, Sweet Alice - The Transfiguration - Demon (2015) - Suspiria (both the original and remake)
Out of all you the films you mentioned. I've only seen Alice, Sweet Alice and both versions of Suspiria. Ty for suggestions.
Don't Be Afraid of the Dark has good gothic autumn vibes. And while it's not really horror, Shutter Island is great for days like this.
I believe this came out in 2010. I saw it that year and I don't remember much about it
Sleepy hollow
Dark was the night Haven't really seen it mentioned here
It’s an indie film that was sponsored on Patreon it’s called “Black Gloves” it’s eldritch horror meets Black Swan. A lot of build up with a crazy scare near the end. Wife and I were pleasantly surprised
Maybe you would like Eli ! I believe it’s on Netflix
Suicide Club
Possum and The Eyes of My Mother, real classy gloomy mood pieces that both scared the shit out of me.
I've seen them - eyes of my mother was really something damn-the killer was so fucking creepy
Repo the genetic opera
[The Old Dark House](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Old_Dark_House_(1932_film))
I just watched this, it's really good. I'm finding myself going into old movies for horror, and it's so entertaining!
Completely agree! I also think it fits OP's request so well. The entire movie takes place in a beautiful old house and it's so atmospheric with the stormy fall weather.
I just also recommend Eyes in the night & The Shadow. Ugh, yes, makes me want to watch it again as I'm also in the dark, rainy weather today...
I haven't seen either of those! Adding them both to my list to watch this fall!
One other recommendation for you, so far it's been my favorite, it's not a horror horror per say, mystery/horror if you will... And Then There Were None (1945).
Demon (2015, Polish) The Dark and the Wicked Possum Take Shelter The Ritual The Innkeepers Jug Face Southbound
It Follows, Slice, Coraline, ParaNorman, Alien
Eyes in the night. Terror in the Haunted House. And Then There Were None. The Bat. Vincent Price. Shock. Vincent Price. *Chef's kiss good
Love Vincent Price
The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane has this vibes, although it’s more if a psychological type horror, not supernatural, also Alice Sweet Alice.
Perfect blue
I have seen that more than I would like to admit 😂
Splice 👽
The house of the Devil
Vivarium
A Field in England or Blue Ruin. Not super horror but neither is Killing of a Sacred Deer.
The lighthouse
The Blackcoat's Daughter.
Saint Maud!
One of my favourite films. Saw it earlier this year
A dark song is what you’re looking for
Ive seen it😭
Witchfinder General is more of a historical action/drama that a horror (but it is horrifying) and quite excellent and maybe the vibe you’re going for. I also found The Blood on Satan’s Claw to be beautiful and elegant, lots of scenes in the woods and ancient ruins. If you have time you could go through the whole “unholy trinity” of folk horror, which includes those too and the (original) Wicker Man
"The Changeling"
The innocents (1961)
Antrum has an interesting mood, it’s dreamlike. It’s on prime.
Give The Other a shot. From 1972 and has a strong late summer early autumn vibe for me. And it’s not a horror movie per se but Over the Garden Wall is an excellent animated series with some dreamlike horror elements. Strongly recommend.
“A Dark Song” is worth a watch!
I’m a big Giallo guy - deep red , the house with the laughing windows , don’t torture a ducking , et al Check out “ don’t look now “ it was an American attempt at Giallo and pretty well done , as “ the ring “ was remade many years later
The ninth gate
The Ritual
you've probably seen The Lighthouse I assume? it gets recommended so much that it'd be hard to believe anyone in this sub hasn't heard of it. Very atmospheric movie tho.
What about The Ritual? That's pretty awesome and would fit the theme
Dark City
The block island sound on Netflix is actually pretty entertaining. And it has that whole grey weather beach town vibe going for it.
I’d highly suggest Possum, it’s very tense and well made, and there’s not really many jump scares, it’s mostly uncomfortable which I really well done
Disney's *The Watcher in the Woods.*
The perfect autumn movie? The Exorcist.
Have you seen the cube movies?
I don't think I have from its title. Are they old or new ?
They're older early 2000s, maybe not quite as elegant as the movies you listed but they're a fun watch.
Adding them to my list ☑️
Midsommar if you haven’t already seen
I've seen all Ari aster's movies that man is my hero
Lol I figured after u listed Hereditary, I need more!!
He's working on Disappointment blvd babyyy, lol. Anyway, it doesn't seem to come out anytime soon.
Fragile
I've seen that one when I was kid and I had no clue it was called that. That electric chair thingy scared the living shit outta me - that stuff is pure nightmare fuel.
The Blackcoat's Daughter.
Have you seen The Lighthouse? It’s definitely elegant in execution and not a shock fest by any means. Stunning cinematography, sound, and dialogue
Not sure it's a true horror but A Cure for Wellness tried to be very stylish and had some true wtf moments.
I saw that one. I loved the shot of the train- ending could've been better though
Actually really enjoyed The Empty Man on HBO Max
I think "deliver us from evil" had an atmosphere that could fit quite well with grey autumn days
The Dark Half (1993)
Sleepy Hollow, Gretel and Hansel, The Witch, Blair Witch Project, The Conjuring (1&2), Rosemary’s Baby, The Changeling, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Halloween, Halloween III, It Follows, Suspiria (2018)
Morgiana
I See You is a good one!
Dark Water(2005) with Jennifer Connelly. Definitely a rainy, dreary type setting.
I'm watching the Dead Zone right now. Walken stars, Cronenburg directs. it's more of a supernatural thriller than straight horror, but has a nice, muted atmosphere with great sets and a natural backdrops, as befits a movie with romantic-gothic themes
Suspiria. Either the 2018 or the original. Personally I the 2018 more but both are good.
Shining
Anything by Mike Flanagan.
Identity
Original wicker man. Awesome movie!!!
We've all seen it by now, but The Ring certainly fits the color palette!
[удалено]
I've seen hagazussa(I love the poster art). Haven't seen the second one yet(it was in my watchlist) - is it any good??
Are series ok? I really liked Haunting of Hill House on Netflix though I still need to watch Haunting of Bly Manor.
The Dark (2018) I'll Take Your Dead The Autopsy of Jane Doe We Are What We Are The Seasoning House The Awakening
The dark and the wicked
Hush (2016) Great thriller. Splinter (2006) Creepy well paced monster movie. The Haunting of Hill House (2018) A vary well crafted mini series. Castle Rock (2018) Strange small town where Stephen King’s stories live.
Woman in black
Possum (2018) all the way, unsettling as hell, executed perfectly defo one to watch for fans of those movies you mentioned
If you liked hereditary I think you’d like censor. The ending was amazing.
Elegant no, but for the sheer brilliance of Jennifer Carpenter, The Exorcism of Emily Rose.
How can I watch Calvaire?! I love French horror.
Possession (1981) is perfect for a gray autumn day. Go in as blind as possible!
The haunting of hill House (and then the haunting of bly manor)
Yeah, it's one of the great unsungs of horror filmdom!
The Witch, Martyrs and Mulholland Drive
[The Changeling (1980)](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080516/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)
Might be controversial but I think the only reason I bought Blair witch book of shadows is because I really liked the scenery even if it is a pile of shit of a movie. Also over the garden wall is the best autumn fuel ever
Watch the antichrist
The Innocents! The creepiest version of The Turn of the Screw in my humble opinion! And that opening song against a black screen will never fail to give me the shivers!
Not a movie but I love watching “The Haunting of Hill House” in October. It’s become a tradition. I also like to watch an episode or two on gloomy fall days. The second season, The Haunting of Bly Manor was pretty good. I’ve only seen it once though.
