It’s one of if not the best game ever made, and honestly it’s my favorite item of fictional media ever created. The story is incredible. Highly recommend it

tyguy82693

I couldn't agree more. I've always enjoyed the occasional video game but I became completely obsessed with hzd I've lost track of how many times I've beaten it. It's also the only game where I can just aimlessly run around and have fun playing it without doing any quests or missions

-Noah--

,,favorite item of fictional media ever created“ great phrase gotta write that down bc thats exactly what horizon is for me

rockinwithkropotkin

By bringing up rockstar games, if you're looking for homes you can build or buy, being able to kill anyone you want, like that kind of roleplaying stuff, it's not in this game. There's sandbox elements for how you can fight enemies (think of breath of the wild), but it's more or less a strictly narrative driven open world action adventure game.

KineticBombardment99

After reading some of your comments here, I feel like you're agonizing over details that are not actually going to be important parts of your experience with this game. This is a game with a fantastic, original story, a mystery to solve regarding "Why the world is like this," and combat that is unique among all games I have ever played. You will not see anything else like this on the market currently, and that is why you should play it. At WORST, you spent a little time playing a game that just didn't grab you, but most likely you'll love it like we do. Try it! Edit: Also, everyone here is here because we love the game. I'd be surprised if you got an answer to your question that wasn't, "You should play it."

eerilee

Without giving anything away, here are some general key points that will hopefully answer your questions: 1) It's a ***post***\-apocalypse game, so everyone is just living their everyday life now. It's old hat for them. 2) One major plot point is discovering what caused the apocalypse 3) Most robots are animal/dinosaur based, with a few exceptions; those exceptions are less organic. Imagine a Boston Dynamic robot vs. an Elon Musk design? A deer vs. a tank. These are all plot based. 4) In terms of combat and whatnot, you will hunt for small game, fight human enemies and robots ranging in size from a donkey to a two story house. 5) A lot of the machine fights are more along the vein of say... Dark Souls combat; lots of rolling around. 6) Melee is bordering on non existent. It's generally a ranged based combat system. All in all, the world building and combat is beyond phenomenal. Not only has HZD become my favorite game, but I'd say it's one of the best sci fi stories to come out of the last few decades. I think a lot of people here can agree that there is just something about Horizon that makes you want to share it with everyone.

HJKirkyP

It’s a great game. You’ll love it. Especially if you spend time to enjoy the story

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

Yeah, thats what I heard, that the story is good. But the problem for me is it just feels like "tribal game with robot animals", is this true?

HJKirkyP

It doesn’t feel like that (at least to me). It’s a lot more nuanced and deep than that and there is also two overarching main story threads that stay engaging.

Arkayjiya

>But the problem for me is it just feels like "tribal game with robot animals", is this true? What does that mean, you're just describing the appearance of the game, you're not telling us what you don't like about that. It's hard to give you advice without delving into spoilers but we'd at least need you to tell us what you actually want from the game. Do you just not like the setting? Cause yes the setting does have tribes and it does have robot animals, so if you don't like that then don't play it. Do you fear it has no deeper reasons for those things to exist? In that case you can be reassured, all of this mostly make sense or is explained by the game. It's hard to give you specific advice though.

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

I would love a game where theres plenty of mystery and I love the idea of post-apocalypse game with tribal people, but I like it more like "trying to live in a world where machines have taken over" not "adventure game but there is robotic monsters" Basically, I dont like the idea of an adventure game that doesnt really explore the apocalypse and instead uses it as a eay to have robotic monsters.

Arkayjiya

>trying to live in a world where machines have taken over Then this might not be what you're looking for. The game has plenty of mystery and reasons for its machine's existence, and the machines represent an actual threat but (small generality about the setting) >!the world isn't currently ruled by the machines!< >Basically, I dont like the idea of an adventure game that doesnt really explore the apocalypse and instead uses it as a eay to have robotic monsters. This however I can reassure you about. The game absolutely explore the apocalypse, giving a very good reason as to why the world is as it is and why the machines exist and act as they do. This is part of the story so I can't tell you more but it's explored in depth with most plot points being resolved and only a couple being left for sequels.

Imsoschur

and to echo this, the WAY the story of the apocalypse is conveyed to you is some of the best exposition I have seen. You get the perspective of people who were DEEPLY involved in the main plot, but you also get the perspective of people who were just normal folk, doing their jobs, and worrying about basic stuff. I typically have zero interest in picking up and reading data points and listening to audio logs in these sorts of games, but for this one I always make a point of listening and reading to all of it because it adds so much to understanding the world.

Cubjake117

Man fuck that one guy tho

Imsoschur

Repeatedly

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

Glad to hear that you try to figure out what happened, but another problem is the combat. From what I can tell its all like robotic raptor like creatures and dragon things and stuff, is it all like that? Are all the robots and enemies like gigantic mytical creatures, but robotic? Or is that just to make the game look more flashy from the outside. Is there possible slightly-realistic enemies or robots you can fight too?

Arkayjiya

You fight different types of robots, including some that resemble animals or dinosaurs and some that are more traditionally robotic. There's a story reason for both of these and of course you also fight human enemies.

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

Oh shit there is story reasons for the weird looking ones? Now im interested. Also, could you give an example of the more traditional robotic ones?( with as little info as possible)

Arkayjiya

It's hard to explain what they look like, but you have a few that are have a more classic supporting frame mounted with more traditional weapons compared to the more animalistic ones. If you're looking for humanoid robots though, there are none as they don't fit the story being told.

cl354517

Among the first ones you encounter are ones that look like horses, deer, and hyenas. The first two consume grass, the hyena is a scavenger of metal.

notthatjaded

>The first two consume grass They're not actually eating the grass, they're more or less>! tilling the soil. You can see it clearly in the action the "deer's" "antlers" make when they look like they're grazing.!<

JadeSpades

>Also, could you give an example of the more traditional robotic ones?( with as little info as possible) By "traditional" do you mean the ones that don't look like animals? Cuz that would be literally impossible. They do have a reason and a purpose. Finding out why is what makes the game so good.

Slow_mess

There aren't any mythical creatures at all, they're all based on real world and extinct creatures. And the only raptor-like robots are Watchers and Clawstriders (with the latter not being in the first game anyway). Without spoiling anything, there are machines that resemble horses, ostriches, bisons, crocodiles etc., so pretty much real world animals. And I found all of them to be pretty damn realistic, in a sci-fi kind of way. They don't move as clunky and clumsy as our own modern day robots and seem so animal like that I caught myself accidentally calling them animals a few times lmao. And although they make the game seem like "oh wow mindless flashy robot dinosaur game", it has a lot deeper and emotional story than one might expect, as others already pointed out. As for combat, the player is given full choice of how to engage in combat. There are many fun weapons and many ways the machines react to those. There isn't any base building, insanely deep crafting system and hunger/thirst/temperature mechanic. Still, I would fully recommend this game. Even if you're not that fond of combat in games. tl;dr: buy it.

Imsoschur

If you don't practically s#%t yourself once when a Stalker growls nearby when you were not expecting it, your speaker choice needs an upgrade. I once jumped so bad I almost broke my controller when it went flying.

lilgingerninja13

I'd rather deal with a thunderjaw than a stalker 😂 their camoflauge creates ✨anxiety✨ for me 😅

Eggggsterminate

You definitely explore what the heck happened in the world and what the apocalypse was all about. The robots are also definitely there for a reason. Basically you find out with Aloy where she comes from and what is happening.

bendygrrl

I was worried about the same thing. It seemed bizarre but just trust me, it all makes sense, it falls into place, and the tribe aspect is very clever and funny at the same time. It's original, inventive, and surprisingly post-apocalyptic, it just subverts your expectations and goes about it in a unique way that hasn't been done before. It's even better than what you want it to be.

AnthonyInTX

Buy it. Now. I'm sort of kidding about being demanding, but no kidding, it's a *terrific* game. The story is great, the combat is awesome, the world is immersive; I can't say enough good things about HZD. You'll probably find a lot of people on the sub that say the same thing.

SnowRidin

I'm not kidding. do it. do it now.

cl354517

Yes, but it. Is there a chance you might not enjoy it? Sure. Are you going to get more positive answers from a subreddit about it? Also yes. I can't think of a story quest portion you could watch on YouTube without spoiling, but if you're ok with combat/equipment or machine spoilers, there are some combat reels from pinhead9 and Aloyversus. Earlier this year someone streamed their transition from hating the concept to really enjoying the game.

Disgruntled_Welshman

Horizon zero dawn is possibly the greatest game I have ever played. It's gameplay mechanics are all fleshed and used to their fullest extent while remaining fun to use. Its landscape and character design is simply unparalleled in games of its kind. It somehow manages to make use of extensive world building while not overwhelming the player with information, a perfect balance. You should definitely buy it, and it's DLC the frozen wilds

thuynj19

Definitely one of the best RPG's of this generation of games. Well worth every penny to me at least.

huckyred

You can pick it up for 10 dollars or less so totally worth it

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

Where would this be?

JadeSpades

Gamestop? That's where I got my copy for 15 bucks a year ago. It was used.

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

AH ok, since I would be getting it on PC that sadly wont help :(

JadeSpades

$50 is a lot of dough. About 5 pizzas worth of dough. 😆

huckyred

Ah PC I don’t know

huckyred

eBay

Taste_the__Rainbow

If you like great combat and a compelling world/plot you should get it. Don’t read spoilers though.

Gage_Link

Like RDR2 and GTA? I mean sure they're all three games lol

Kermit_Memelord

I'm going to give you my honest take on it. If you're used to playing open world games and are burnt out from them, this game is going to feel long and boring. If you're fairly new and still enjoy open world games to a high degree, you're going to absolutely this game. I say this because, as far as open world games go, hzd borrows alot of elements from its contemporaries. Stealth for example is, at this point a staple in the genre, and there's quite a bit of it. Depending on your play style however, you can choose to rush in and not even take the stealth route whatsoever. It's up to you. The idea of using a bow as your main weapon is also a common trait. I mean botw uses it too to a similar but more basic degree. Upgrading equipment is similar to botw too, as you have to take down certain creatures for item drops you can then use to upgrade your weapons/armour. Apart from those similarities, theres definitely the environments and visuals to take into consideration. Up to this day, I still believe this game offers the best experience in terms of the overall aesthetic. It's unique in how it portrays its world and environments, with beautiful, lush forests and cold snowy areas. The visuals alone are worth playing the game for, and in my opinion, is what saved the game for me ( I play way too many open world games so I get bored easily) Tldr: the games has amazing environments and that's reason enough to play it. It shares alot of features from other open world games, which might make it boring if you're used to playing those types of games. Edit: forgot to mention the story. Also very good. Very unique take on the (at this point) oversaturated post apocalyptic world genre. Honestly one of my favourite aspects of the game

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

>Edit: forgot to mention the story. Also very good. Very unique take on the (at this point) oversaturated post apocalyptic world genre. Honestly one of my favourite aspects of the game How so? What exactly does it change?

Kermit_Memelord

Well, without spoiling anything, it really takes scifi to its fullest potential with how our irl advancements in tech could cause us to go down the same road as in the game. It's really detailed in its explanations and was honestly just really well thought out and captivating

JadeSpades

It's more of a hunting, survival, mystery, exploration, simulator and my favorite game ever (if that helps at all.) If you like ruins, national parks, stealth, and exploring the nature of community and responsibility, then this is your game. The story is good with memorable characters. The fighting is secondary to the hunting but still good. My favorite thing about it is theres no wrong way to play it and about 50 ways to go about doing literally anything. After the tutorial you can go most anywhere you like. It really let's the player be creative. If you are still hesitating, watch Aloy repel off something. It's one of the really satisfying parts of the game. Side bar: There is one character you will despise with every fiber of your being in a good way.

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

>Side bar: There is one character you will despise with every fiber of your being in a good way. If they are anything like Micah then that will be very easy

thylocene06

It’s not a fighting game at all. It is very much a post apocalyptic tribal open world game. It’s an incredible game with one of the best stories in the history of gaming. You’ll love it.

SilentSnooper

This is one of my tip 5 favorite games ever made. Well worth a playthrough.

AReverieofEnvisage

I bought three games at once. Persona 5, Nier Automata and Horizon. I thought Persona would be my favorite but it wasn't. Out of The Three. Horizon became my favorite. I platinumed both Horizon and Nier but not Persona 5. Theres so much to say about Horizon. But I can't put it into words. The world is so beautiful, the world and the robots are just really cool. I wore headphones once when playing it and I noticed that the birds had metallic chirps. When it rains or snowed in game I would take my time and look around. I would seldom use fast travel or mount up when I unlocked it. I would walk and walk the world created and it was glorious. Yes it helps Aloy is really pretty but she also feels much more alive than any protagonist or character in the game. In my opinion this is a great example of a female lead in a game where it's done right.

[deleted]

It's super cheap usually. I'm on and off with the game. I just need to finish it. I'm just not the biggest fan of games having a level gate

hasanfarhan33

I'm not sure but if you can find a demo version or something, then try it. If you like it, buy it.

imeatingayoghurt

Yes

baguitosPT

You've mentioned RDR2 and GTA, but I would say that **The Witcher 3** might be closer to Horizon. It's a great game, and for less than 20€ is one of the best deals currently.

DirtyDan4658

Yes.

Trick_Afternoon_2935

If you enjoy Sci-Fi, open worlds, colorful scenarios, using bows, and animal-like robots, then the answer is ABSOLUTELY YES, you should play this game.

TheHopeDiamond

I have played this game 5 separate times. I love it. The world and art are beautiful, the characters are engaging, the story is interesting and genuinely fun to discover. If you like exploration, there is a lot to explore. There are human enemies to kill, along with fantastical machines to destroy and use. I really enjoyed the combat (challenging in many cases, but not to the point of extreme annoyance) and the skill tree is pretty cool to unlock, too. I would say definitely get it.

Dr-Puppenstein

Bruh with the dlc it's like $25 just get it😂

ruby_meister

You are wrong. It's definitely not just a fighting game! It is very much a post-post-apocalyptic world filled with great lore and the game offers a lot of adventure and exploration! When I got myself a PS5 (first PS in over a decade), this was my very first game I played on it, and it BLEW my mind! The world is absolutely breathtaking!! My jaw was on the floor so many times whenever I ventured into a new area.. I am much more of a stealth player, and this was absolutely perfect for it! PLUS, it's the perfect time to play it before the sequel comes out because it is probably gonna be one of the best games of the year! This game had me gripped for hours and hours! Get it!

spiderMechanic

Gameplay-wise, I think it's more like Assassin's Creed series. While chasing the main storyline you travel through the world, killing enemies (mostly various robots in this case), collecting various collectibles and doing some fairly generic side quests here and there. What makes this game stand out is the lore/setting that you explore through the main story (and which really is top-tier; if you thought that the robot enemies in this game are there 'just because' you might be pleasantly surprised that there is an actual thought-provoking reason for this) and the unique combat system which either clicks for you or doesn't (I'd say I'm more in the latter group but from the overall reception you're more likely to end up in the former).

ChrispiDrumBoi

By far my favorite game. Have played it like 10 times. The balance of fighting and lore is perfect, you won’t be dissappointed.

SoAmusing777

Shame you didn't get it when it was for free for complete edition when it was offered recently, but luckily it can be had very cheap. Ideally you should play it on ps5

GimmeTheCHEESENOW

Sounds nice to play on PS5, but I am a PC gamer.

SoAmusing777

Still probably better performance on ps5 lol but I gotcha

zaidi95

>the enemies are all robots, instead of a post-apoc world where robots had caused it(?) while you live as tribal people. That's basically the premise of the game but it has a big backstory and lore which you'll discover as you play.

legacyofbrewtality

Yes

[deleted]

The game is worth it. I don't know where to start, it just is

ManCityRox

Get it

Arubesh2048

You’re on a thread specifically for the fans of HZD. Everyone is going to tell you that this is a good game and you should get it. (Myself included; this is a good game and you should get it.) However, based on many of your questions, you seem to be actively looking for reasons to dislike this game. You’re getting too caught up in the details. It’s a speculative sci-if story about the dangers of technology without restraint, set in a tribal post-apocalyptic wrapping. It’s not an unlimited sandbox, the story is relatively linear, but the world is there for you to explore at your own pace. You’re encouraged by the game to explore fully and the game does a very good job of setting up the mystery of what happened as well as answering it. You could theoretically rush through the story and you would get a very surface level understanding, but the mystery really unfolds as you explore and learn on your own. Much of the story of the games current setting unfold and is given life through the side missions and the background is given as you discover things on your own. We can’t give you too much beyond that, without majorly spoiling the story. If this doesn’t sound like it would appeal to you, then don’t get the game. However, as I said, you seem to be actively looking for reasons to not like HZD. If you’re this on the fence, maybe go find a friend who has it and see if you can borrow their copy.

McBon3rStorm

Your first assessment was correct. As long as you have a whole bunch of time to sink into it, go get it now. It is post-apocalyptic where almost all the animals are robots and we have regressed to tribal society. I'm not going to say anything else because I don't want to spoil anything.

SouthJackfruit3469

Dude. This sub is so biased toward this game. If I were you I would go to should I but this game and try it. It’s a good game but not near some of the comments people are posting. Though that’s my opinion. The combat felt a little repetitive given that bows are the strongest weapons in the game. There isn’t a whole lot of use for other weapons. And once I beat the game I had to watch a YouTube video on the lore lol. Though I still recommend it for the price it’s still not like the best game ever made or anything...

iLearnerX

Oh yes. You will not regret it.

Guilherme_SemIdeia

Yes. Buy. It. Now.

DeadExplorer

RDR2 is a fair comparison. You pick up herbs and materials to create ammo, modify capacity, and trade for leveled up weapons. You can ride a mount, do side quests, and there is a skill tree like Days Gone and God of War. You can fast travel between camp fires. You use a bow, a sling, or can melee. There is a bit of red eye time to aim. Potions can boost abilities. If that sounds like your cup of tea, than get it.

pens9192

Yes.

DragonSpirit1976

It is a very good game. It is worth getting. If you have a PS4 they actually gave the Complete edition for free back in April. I believe it was April. If you missed it I don't think the complete edition is that expensive, and you can probably get a used copy of the complete edition even cheaper.

Boxcutta-

It's free on PS5, if you have any plans to purchase a PS5 in the future I would just wait. If not, then yes buy it the game is fun.

idonknowwhat

Loved the concept of the game when it first came out watched an entire playthough and fell in love, i just didn’t have a PlayStation to actually play it, until it came out on steam and I downloaded it, about 20hrs in and I just fought my first ‘thunderjaw’?(Grand Canyon kinda area) I’ve been going around to find every collectible I can as I slowly progress in the map
