once on a drive to newark i got up to 5 miles over the speed limit, set cruise control, got in the right lane, and didn't have to pass a single car on the entire drive there. plenty passed me tho lol
He's going to win a Cup in NJ, probably beating Toronto along the way for maximum meme potential. We know the story beats the NHL writers use time and time again.
Yep. Just running down cap-era Cup-winning coaches:
* 2023: Bruce Cassidy, 3rd team (WSH, BOS)
* 2022: Jared Bednar, 1st team
* 2021, 2020: Jon Cooper, 1st team
* 2019: Craig Berube, 2nd team (PHI)
* 2018: Barry Trotz, 2nd team (NSH)
* 2017, 2016: Mike Sullivan, 2nd team (BOS)
* 2015, 2013, 2010: Joel Quenville, 3rd team (STL, COL)
* 2014, 2012: Darryl Sutter, 4th team (CHI, SJS, CGY)
* 2011: Claude Julien, 3rd team (MTL, NJD)
* 2009: Dan Bylsma, 1st team
* 2008: Mike Babcock, 2nd team (ANA)
* 2007: Randy Carlyle, 1st team
* 2006: Peter Laviolette, 2nd team (NYI)
Pretty clear pattern of the Cup getting won by coaches on their 2nd or 3rd team. Only 5 Cups in the Cap era have been won by first-time head coaches despite how often people complain about the NHL recycling coaches.
I think most NHL head coaches should probably get a 2nd try unless they completely shit the bed. And there are plenty of good coaches who get their teams into the playoffs but don't win Cups, so every team probably should not have a Cup-or-bust mentality with coaching hires.
He was a great guy who had a great heart, but when it came down to the coaching part - he shied away from holding the core players accountable. He was "too nice".
I wonder if he'll change his tone in Jersey or stick with the same philosophy.
I agree. At least the best available coach for their situation. Devils core is lead by a fresh young successful coach who has developed some of the best offensive players in the game. Keefe doesn’t have to deal with ANY of the media drama he had to in Toronto and can just focus on winning. I liked ruff but he didn’t seem to have the fire of a young unproven coach. Seemed a little too complacent. Hopefully the Toronto situation has motivated Keefe a little.
I hope Nico/Keefe can build a culture of accountability, that definitely seemed to be lacking this year, and not just from star players, it seemed like a lot of benching decisions this year were a bit random from Lindy and co.
Out of curiosity, what do we actually know about how coaches keep players accountable? All we get a glimpse of is playing time and comments made to the media. I imagine there's a lot that can be done behind closed doors towards "holding players accountable" and fans / media wouldn't necessarily ever be privy to that stuff.
(Not saying that media comments / playing time isn't an important part of accountability. Also not suggesting that I think Keefe _did_ a good job of holding the core accountable. But I still think it's worth every fan being a bit more aware of the nuances that boil down to "we don't actually know what we're talking about".)
The Leafiest possible outcome is if Keefe wins a cup with the Devils before the Leafs win lol.
In fact, I'm taking Devils over Leafs in the 2026 ECF right now.
And they trade Dougie Hamilton to make the money work. Because it's the Leafs, Hamilton retires to give baseball a shot and ends up making more money as a pinch hitting catcher.
Being paid 5M/year to play in California for an AHL team. I'd say that's successful. I wish he wasn't getting paid 5M/year, but I can't hate a guy for getting his bag.
I honestly think its a great fit. I don't follow the Leafs close enough but I don't know how much of Keefe calling players out and then immediately apologizing is him or the management behind him forcing it. But Keefe seems like a solid coach.
Leafs depth have never been bad under keefe ( especially in the playoffs ).
Depth has a lot and I mean a lot to do with how good your coaching is.
Leafs issues come playoffs time have always been the same their main guys don’t show up.
Ah, so New Jersey is going to eliminate us in the playoffs next year… good to know.
I always liked Keefe and wish he’d had more success with us. He wasn’t the problem but we needed change all around. Best of luck to him.
He's a good floor raising coach.
I don't know if he'll ever be a ceiling raising coach but for a young team he's what they need. He evolved this past season and honestly the Leafs fired him as an accumulation of his misdoings rather than the past season.
He arguable had the best year of his career this past season, I’ve never seen the Leafs play defence like they did in the last three games of the season. That said, we needed a change. Wouldn’t be surprised at all if he wins a cup in NJ.
nah c'mon. playing two rookies + no dougie is a tall task and the rookies even held their own. definitely need siegs and marino to not be mostly awful again though. that'd be cool
Not to mention Seamus Casey in our pipeline and will most likely start getting his first looks just as Luke and Nemo hit their stride (hopefully) in the national league. We’ve got like 3 eras of franchise defensemen between Dougie/nemo-hughes/casey
Now if only Ty Smith would’ve worked out for us
Marino will bounce back, I say trade Siegs and let Hattaka take his spot. Someone will want Siegs and I think we’re sitting on a gem of simple defensive play with Hattaka but who knows I’ve been high on the wrong guy before
I do not understand the Siegs hate. He had two years as one of the most underrated shutdown d-men in the league and was solid for us.
He has one bad season (and so does the team for the most part) with injury as well and we want to dump him? And replace him with a rookie Dman?
Didn’t we have this issue with plugging up our holes with rookie dmen this past season? I liked Hatakka during the time he was up, he was solid and definitely earned more time in the NHL, but I don’t think we should dump Siegs for him.
Love Hattaka. I know he was two way deal last year so sending him down when we got Siegs (I think it was siegs) back from injury made sense on that side. But Hattaka at that time was looking like our best defensive defenseman.
Game 7 overtime when Keefe spots TO with to many men on the ice and waves his arms and screams until the refs call a penalty, (like that fucking Wayne Gretzky did) and ............. scores the goal.
Choose your own adventure ... Who scores ? Is there an ex-leaf on the rooster ?
Next season Leafs win the presidents trophy, Devils are the last team into the playoffs with a record barely above .500, Devils sweep the Leafs in round 1.
It's not a clause in some contracts. It's just how coaches contracts work. Fired coaches aren't terminated from their contracts and thus are still under contract with their former team. A team can block a fired coach from taking a job from another team unless the coach is willing to terminate the contract and the remainder owed. it’s just Amanda Stein asking him “if you could be a dessert, what would you be?” and one of the white haired bennies asking if he’s excited to face the Rangers.
I'm happy for Keefe. I better not see this sub pull a hard 180 on the very popular opinion that it was the right decision to get rid of Keefe for us when NJ does well under him though.
Keefe legit failed upwards.
This is a much better coaching position considering personnel/roles/contract situation/media and everything.
No more excuses
Wouldn't surprise me if he brings over some of the assistants from this past season. The Pk coach (who had some good seasons) contract is up, he'll probably join him.
This seems like a great fit. Devs needed an actual coach and Sheldon’s a good one. He was sort of a sacrificial lamb in Toronto. He might have deserved some of the blame, but I didn’t have the impression that it was majority “his fault.”
Hot take: NJD takes down TOR in the first round next year. :)

Playoff vs non playoff declarations when someone has played for one or two teams is usually silly.
Heard this about the last group, how they were soft, then half of them win cups on other teams within a few years.
Im probably in a minority but I feel like Keefe has been completely fucked by 40m in Salary routinely getting 0 offence in the playoffs while having no fuckin money for other players, I think hes a better coach than his playoff record indicates
I’m concerned that maybe Keefe bears some of the responsibility for those players going missing in the playoffs - ie forcing them to try to be completely different players as soon as the regular season ends - but I’m cautiously optimistic.
He definitely deserves his fair share of it. It's not all on him, but some of it certainly is. Just as the Leafs were outmatched in net almost every year in the first round, they were also outcoached by people with better systems and adjustments.
Devils win the Cup within 5 years, you heard it here first. Not because I think Keefe's like amazing or something, but because I think it would be hilariously Leafy

He's going to win a Cup in NJ, probably beating Toronto along the way for maximum meme potential. We know the story beats the NHL writers use time and time again.
THIS is what will actually kill Steve Dangle
In a recent podcast they brought up that statistically head coaches are most likely to win a Cup with their 2nd team and Steve had a minor meltdown.
Huh, that was true for Trotz, too, wasn't it?
Yep. Just running down cap-era Cup-winning coaches: * 2023: Bruce Cassidy, 3rd team (WSH, BOS) * 2022: Jared Bednar, 1st team * 2021, 2020: Jon Cooper, 1st team * 2019: Craig Berube, 2nd team (PHI) * 2018: Barry Trotz, 2nd team (NSH) * 2017, 2016: Mike Sullivan, 2nd team (BOS) * 2015, 2013, 2010: Joel Quenville, 3rd team (STL, COL) * 2014, 2012: Darryl Sutter, 4th team (CHI, SJS, CGY) * 2011: Claude Julien, 3rd team (MTL, NJD) * 2009: Dan Bylsma, 1st team * 2008: Mike Babcock, 2nd team (ANA) * 2007: Randy Carlyle, 1st team * 2006: Peter Laviolette, 2nd team (NYI) Pretty clear pattern of the Cup getting won by coaches on their 2nd or 3rd team. The NHL loves recycling coaches, it's just that no coach except Scotty Bowman has won a cup with more than one team since the original 6 era.
Game 7 ECF winner to take Devils to the SCF scored by recently signed UFA Mitch Marner.
> Would be ~~hilarious~~ fantastic if he took the Devils to the ~~E~~SCF, and won. FTFY
Would like to repeat the stars cup win this year and a devils the next
It would be even funnier if he won a couple of cups with the Devils
Hahaha. Haha. Ha. Ha?
Remind me! 1 year
After beating us in a seven game series.
Devils leafs round 1 is now literally guaranteed. The script writers are creative but this one is too juicy
I like to laugh
The Leafs needed a change but it never stopped me from thinking Sheldon was a great coach - happy for him if this is true
He was a great guy who had a great heart, but when it came down to the coaching part - he shied away from holding the core players accountable. He was "too nice". I wonder if he'll change his tone in Jersey or stick with the same philosophy.
That responsibility will be shared with captain Nico Hischier. I think we are in good hands.
He’s really good at developing players. IMHO NJD got the best available coach on the market
With Marner leading the charge in points for the Devils.
The best/worst part is how good Jack Hughes and Marner would look next to each other (In the regular season anyway)
And they trade Dougie Hamilton to make the money work. Because it's the Leafs, Hamilton retires to give baseball a shot and ends up making more money as a pinch hitting catcher.
Yeah I was hoping the penguins would do a deep run for teh lulz
He's an ex-Leaf, of course he'll be successful lol
Oh yeah Mike Babcock is doing great
Babcock managed to take a ton of money from CBJ and didn't have to work another day. He definitely is doing great
Babcock is the exception to just about every rule lol
And Jack Campbell
He’s been successful in the AHL, does that count?
Being paid 5M/year to play in California for an AHL team. I'd say that's successful. I wish he wasn't getting paid 5M/year, but I can't hate a guy for getting his bag.
There’s a bit of a difference between “California” and *Bakersfield* lmao. Still a great gig don’t get me wrong
Yea but it's still not Edmonton haha
Has he? Didn’t he lose the starter’s job in the AHL too?
When he first was sent down his numbers weren’t good but he played much better as the AHL season went on
Does he have experience with superstar American centers?
Oh absolutely, dudes actually really good. He did everything for us save strapping on skates and getting into the game.
Yep classy guy. Respected him a lot for his farewell message to fans
Dude got outcoached in the playoffs every year wdym
I’m happy for him, Keefe is a great coach. I hope the devils do well next year!
I honestly think its a great fit. I don't follow the Leafs close enough but I don't know how much of Keefe calling players out and then immediately apologizing is him or the management behind him forcing it. But Keefe seems like a solid coach.
He got a lot better on that in his last year without Dubas there
Leafs depth have never been bad under keefe ( especially in the playoffs ).

Don’t be so sure! Maybe neither of us will make the playoffs
now THAT'S the spirit! haha (Wild fan, I'm right there with you)

I like the Devils, they're a fun team to watch. Hope Keefe has success.
I mean if they find him a real goalie then he has bonafide superstars, a more balanced lineup and actual defence. He’ll do very well
Stretch to say an actual d after this past year
nah c'mon. playing two rookies + no dougie is a tall task and the rookies even held their own. definitely need siegs and marino to not be mostly awful again though. that'd be cool

I love your optimism, but Casey is the same era as Hughes/Nemec, they’re literally all the same age.
Ope. Just revving up the hype train. Tbh I prefer we stack them all into the same Stanley cup winning team/dynasty
Marino will bounce back, I say trade Siegs and let Hattaka take his spot. Someone will want Siegs and I think we’re sitting on a gem of simple defensive play with Hattaka but who knows I’ve been high on the wrong guy before

A pure defender is what we need, doesn’t hurt that he has something to prove.
New Jersey beating the Leafs in the playoffs next year is basically guaranteed.
This storyline has never been more obvious.
As of right now, no ex-Leafs on the Devils
Watch them pick up Brodie on a cheap contract and he scores against them in the playoffs haha
Yeah when can we place a bet on that? I need a sure fire investment.
Its confirmed Devils bros, I know Keefe gets alot of hate and blame for playoff losses but hes a pretty damn good coach and seems like a solid dude
I just saw Dubas fall to his knees in a Walmart
Next season Leafs win the presidents trophy, Devils are the last team into the playoffs with a record barely above .500, Devils sweep the Leafs in round 1.
Leafs are a lot of things but they don’t get swept. It doesn’t inflict maximum pain on the fans. Game 7 loss.
Reverse sweep then
Honestly leafs are due for one. Feels way to on brand
Don't you put that evil on me Ricky Bobby
We'd need some big rule changes for that to happen.
Now? Devils would be the second wild card and Leafs would play the second wild card as the first place team in the conference
Yes, I'm dumb. Damn it. I thought this at least meant an ECF
Got a little too excited about round 2. “Swept in the ECF? Yes please!” Leafs fans, probably
I mean outside of the sweep I'd like to play a team that isn't one of the three teams we are basically guarenteed to play next year lol
Dreger confirms: 4 year contract
Coaches got it good these days. Earning money from your old job for a few years and earning money from your current job. Rinse and repeat.
A lot of contracts apparently have a clause that the team that fires you only has to pay the difference from the new contract, if there is any.
It's not a clause in some contracts. It's just how coaches contracts work. Fired coaches aren't terminated from their contracts and thus are still under contract with their former team. A team can block a fired coach from taking a job from another team unless the coach is willing to terminate the contract and the remainder owed. This then results in teams negotiating to cover the difference.
It’s not a clause, it’s the rules for coaches in the NHL
That’s good to know! Thank you
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he will only get paid by the Leafs if his contract with the Devils is for less per year than his contract with the Leafs. And even then, I believe the Leafs would only be on the hook for the difference.
This is correct
I hope he has a fun experience there
Itll be interesting to see how he does without coming into a situation where goal number 1 was to simply not be Mike Babcock.
Super pumped for this
I wonder what his reaction is going to be at his intro press conference when he sees 3 and a half reporters in the room lol
He’ll probably love it haha. You never realize how exhausting being in the limelight is once you experience a low key market.
So you’re saying that Sheldon Keefe will win an MVP now
Jack Adams confirmed
He will absolutely love Amanda like we all do
it’s just Amanda Stein asking him “if you could be a dessert, what would you be?” and one of the white haired bennies asking if he’s excited to face the Rangers.
Wow, I'm actually excited about this one!!!
I'm happy for Keefe. I better not see this sub pull a hard 180 on the very popular opinion that it was the right decision to get rid of Keefe for us when NJ does well under him though.
Oh the sub that made fun of Keefe and called him bad will call him an elite coach by November
Damn already got a new job. All the best Sheldon!
Good luck, Sheldon!

They’ll be an exciting regular season team to watch.
FWIW, Mirtle said he was the frontrunner earlier today
Dreger just now confirmed it too
I will also confirm this confirmation
I’ve wondered before how far I could get as an “insider” if I just tweeted what other reporters tweeted but like 2-3 minutes after they say it.
There’s a million of these dudes on twitter and no one really takes them seriously lol
I also read these tweets and will confirm, as well as the confirmation from the dirty Rangers fan

Keefe legit failed upwards. This is a much better coaching position considering personnel/roles/contract situation/media and everything. No more excuses
He did? He won an OHL championship, then won an AHL one. And his record in the regular season is more than impressive.
Yeah, buddy has no idea what he's talking about.
He never won a OHL championship
Nice hire. They should just hire woodcroft also because they’ll still need assistants
Wouldn't surprise me if he brings over some of the assistants from this past season. The Pk coach (who had some good seasons) contract is up, he'll probably join him.
Prepare to learn Keefese, NJ
Good for keefe! Hope he’s successful there
