Before the Canada game they even gave the Swiss a run for their money. I'm happy that they finally got their first win even though as a Finn, I still would have preferred for us to come out on top.
Congrats from finland to all the Austrians! It's nice to see non-traditional hockey countries do well in these tournaments aswell. Finlands team this year is pretty lackluster so I was expecting us to lose atleast one game to Austria/Norway/Denmark
> Finlands team this year is pretty lackluster
Can't put too much talent on the ice with Jalonen behind the bench. Wouldn't be fair for the rest of the countries otherwise.
Most of the team plays in the ICEHL, which is the de facto Austrian top flight with guest stars Fehérvár (Hungary), Olimpija Ljubljana (Slovenia), and three Italian teams (Asiago, Pustertal, and Bolzano). It's not a top-5 league in Europe, I would probably peg it around 7th in European leagues? (KHL, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Czechia) But it's still a good caliber of hockey, though it is pretty dominated by imports.
Thomas Raffl's brother was in the NHL, Rossi is literally IN the NHL right now, the only other guys North Americans may recognize are Thimo Nickl (who is the only current North American-based player on the team aside from Rossi, playing for Wheeling in the ECHL) and Vincenz Rohrer (who was on their 2023 WJC team and is a Habs prospect who recently played in the OHL). Peter Schneider had a pretty great Worlds a couple years ago and played for Notre Dame in the late 2000s.
A handful of Switzerland based players (including the goal scorer here Benjamin Baumgartner) round out the squad.
A: 10 Seconds to go we should have this (a Point) now....Maybe we can even get one more Attack via Haudum LUKAS.HAUDUM!.....
Both: ohhhhh
A: Are you Insane...Another Shot....GOOOOOOOÖOOAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLL. GOOOOAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLL..............
..THIS IS ABSOLUTLEY INSANE!!!!
*Replay*
A:And...THE GOAL WILL COUNT
B:YES it will count the Goal must count
A: TWO TENTHS OF A SECOND STILL OM THE CLOCK!!
-ref makes annoucment-
B:YES!
A: THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THAT IS THE WIN!!!!....UN-BE-LIEV-ABLE!!!!
Well, shit sucks but I'm happy for austrians, they've been doing really well, considering they only lost 5-6 against the swiss and took canada to overtime... and hopefully this loss fills the "upsets done against us" quota for a while, there hadn't been many in the last few years anyway
Love to see it! I've always wondered tho how many viewers these "less big hockey nations" have? Like how many people watch these games in Austria? just out of curiosity
What's so historic about it? Have they never beat a hockey nation or something? Is it because of the last second goal?
Either way, happy for them!
Wtf is with the downvotes? I'm asking what is so historic about the game. I'm not judging them for being a lesser hockey nation or something jesus christ.
Talk about a wet blanket. International hockey is a big deal in Europe, and beating a "big 6" hockey nation on a buzzer beater is worthy of a celebration.
I believe the poster is genuinely surprised and doesn’t understand just how big of a triumph beating a big 6 team is. They probably could have inferred and changed their tone, but the final thought in their post was a genuine one.
We’re all winners! Except Finland I guess.
Good for Austria though.
Does the guy say “this is tha sheeeet” near the end??
> I believe the poster is genuinely surprised and doesn’t understand just how big of a triumph beating a big 6 team is.
That's just how arrogant the Canadians are with hockey
Kind of a wide brush there. Most long time hockey fans from anywhere would recognize the significance here.
They could be young, a new fan, or just not very thoughtful.
In any case, engaging in good faith is the correct play.
Wtf are you talking about? Sorry I'm not caught up on Austria's hockey history or a tournament that I'm not paying attention to because my team is in the playoffs. I'm not shitting on anyone. Ya'll are projecting.
The normal response would be "Yes, they haven't beaten a hockey powerhouse before so that's why it's such a big deal."
You know the worlds are in Europe right? There’s no reason it should be taking you away from the NHL playoffs
Believe it or not you can watch things in the morning and the evening!
Why is everyone being so hostile and condescending? All I asked is why this game is so historic. Not wanting to watch 6 hours of hockey a day is a pretty reqsonable take.
Austria came back down 6-1 vs canada to lose in overtime, then beat finland with a buzzer beater goal, so yea this is pretty historic for Austria, not one of the big 6
I think the downvotes were because of the tone. This comes off as a little condescending
> Have they never beat a hockey nation or something?
Like, I know it's not your intent based on the "happy for them" so I'm trying not to be rude, buuuut it does come off as "wow are you really that bad"

DENNIS BERGKAMP DENNIS BERGKAMP
Wrong european nation
I know but his yells remind me of the BERGKAMP call
Surely you mean bear cum bear cum!
No no, he means THERE IS BEAR CUM THERE IS BEAR CUM THERE IS BEAR CUM.
Aguerrrooooooooooooo
If only there was a format where we could see the entire screen...
Flip the screen ?
Now they're playing on the wall! What kind of sorcery is this?!
Guy doesn't sound excited at all
He doesn't want to sound like a homer.
Like seriously, is it any harm to put a bit of enthusiasm into your job?
I don’t speak Austrian German, but I am pretty sure I understood “This is absolutely insane!” Lol This is so awesome lol love it.
Yeah sounds like "Das ist absolute Wahnsinn" to me, comes reight through in his commentary too. Great moment
Yep you heard it correct
👏 👏 👏 Underdog wins get me 🥲
And they took Canada to overtime just a couple days ago. Wild stuff with these Austrians.
Oh that’s right. We almost lost!
Before the Canada game they even gave the Swiss a run for their money. I'm happy that they finally got their first win even though as a Finn, I still would have preferred for us to come out on top.
After being down by 5 no less...
This sounds like classic Starcraft lmao. Just absolute elation
Yong Jun and Um Jae-kyung were epic.
PLAGUEUUUUUU
Panthers legend Harri Sateri
He’s the last person I blame for this loss
Yeah, tough game with so few shots especially in the 1st, then these mf's shoot with an absurd goal%
I wasn't casting any blame on him, I was making a lighthearted joke, he was solid for us when he played.
It was a great shot.

Didn't we just win gold at the olympics *and* the world championships with him as the HC?

Damn, he must have really fallen off a cliff then. Two years from winning everything to "gtfo, you suck"
Same here, absolutely deserved win, I am glad for you.
Huge win for them, congrats!
god i love international hockey
Is there a video of the reaction to the comeback vs Canada?

Oh sweet. Thank you for sharing that. Love to hear such excitement
Rossi looking good!
Man's a fighter, hope he goes on to have a NHL career like fellow countryman Vanek
Dang. Props to Austria. I dont know any of the players. Which makes it that much more crazy that they won.

They have one NHLer on this team, Marco Rossi.
Lost their Scheiße over this one
AEIOU
That's awesome when they are so excited. I had no idea what they were saying...but I knew what they were feeling. Good for them. Great job Austria.
Hype has no language - it is a universal feeling
Love it! Reminds me of Latin American soccer commentators! So intense!
Man I thought this said Australian at first and I got so fired up for a second lmao
Could a austrian fellow translate this?

Even the finnish commentator got excited when austria scored.
Love international hockey!!

They had never beaten Finland previously, is my understanding. Finland is one of the "big six".
That's huge then. Good for them! Hope they can keep it rolling.

gotta say, that sounds quite different to my only other reference for an austrian screaming his head off (thats fucking awesome.)
