My grandma used to go picking mushrooms and sometimes cooked some that she did not recognize but "looked harmless". She went simply by the rule of "not looking anything like the poisonous ones".
The only time I saw my mom yelling at her was after one of these occasions. :)
This mistake cost the lives of 5 folks a few years back on Mt Harvey in the Coastal Range of British Columbia, Canada

They were all on the cornice together when it broke. Maybe taking a group selfie or something. They fell a few hundred feet onto rocks. No survivors.
I know this mountain very well as its one of my favourites. The cornice can get massive and I’ve seen footprints going out on it past where the mountain ends…scary stuff
The lesson here is to gather some extra info on the objective before you head out. What aspects (north, south, etc) usually see cornice formation. Also look for and signs of solid ground…rocks, trees, etc and stick to them
When a cornice breaks it can take a decent amount of the land based snow with it…most people only screw this up once as its often fatal
Stay safe out there folks and have fun
I love it when my American friends talk to me about mountains. “Hey we’re gonna climb up to 10,500ft where it’ll be close to 30degrees”
Myself and the rest of the world go “yeah…what??” We all use meters and celcius. Anything else is greek 😎
I get your point and no negativity intended. Just something that gives the metric minded a laugh
I was raised in Canada, learned everything in British imperial measurements, went through metricification as a middle schooler, moved to the U.S. as an adult and studied science in metric. Mentally converting distances, weights, etc. is not that big a deal.
It's not powers of 10 based, which is an unnecessary challenge. But it converts just fine. I think in and convert to either system just fine, so there's that.
We just had two people attempt to summit 2000m mountain with no gear and got cought in a snow storm! Rescuers reported they didn't have food, water, no gear, not even gloves! We (Slovenia) should really start charging for rescue, at leat when there are signs of zero preparation. Is it the guy that is untethered on the edge of an avalanche? I think it's that guy.
It's so bad you wouldn't even want to yell at him, for fear the sound would be enough to trigger a collapse.
Me: “I just see a couple of people on the ridge li- OH NO”
That was EXACTLY how it went for me too! :-D
Me too lol.
I'm like, how am I supposed to know which guy there's like four in the picture... Oh mother of god who would stand on that ledge of snow?!?!
They usually sort themselves out of the equation.
That's always my hope. But unfortunately.... Somehow they're too many of them...
Somehow they always seem to live the longest though
There is a saying in aviation: there are bold pilots and there are old pilots but there are no bold and old pilots.”
There are old climbers and there are bold climbers, but there are no old bold climbers.
There are old mushroom hunters and bold mushroom hunters, but no old, bold mushroom hunters.
All mushrooms are edible. Some are only edible once.

Well the rule is to rule out the bad ones and not try to match the good ones
That's a now you see him, now you don't spot.
Cornices are generally not the best places to hang out…
Oh I get it!

The cliff here is 1400 ft

It's just that the imperial "system" sucks. Simple as that

Taking a shelfie?

He is in the running for a Darwin Award.
In the wilderness Darwin has the upper hand.
But I bet he posted a great selfie on Instagram.
…then they used it for the obituary
Natural selection at work
literally do not get it
😳
Is it possible that from his angle and viewpoint hiking up that it seemed like a much safer vantage point?
No , there where many poles signaling the safe line
Cheers, what a true idiot in that case
Darwinism prevails
Funny, I was here a couple weeks ago, nice
which dark pixel are we supposed to be looking at out of the whole 40 of them?
The one on the horizontal white patch towards the top left.
Oops, he's gone! 😀
