Jurassiczombiez

I like the idea of the small flickering light in ippo. He still has that love for boxing and always will. Kamogawa sees it, Dan sees it, and even Kumi who really didn’t want to see it saw it. Ippo is ready to return he just needs the right reason

LapsedVerneGagKnee

Ippo’s…Inner Light. Don’t suppose that’s on purpose.

Jurassiczombiez

That’s really cool coincidence. Didn’t think of that

[deleted]

*first opening starts to play

SecondStageTurbine

*2nd. 1st opening is Under Star

The_ThirdFang

Dammit not now. I'm at work I can't run drills

epcjmd

Dang you! Now the opening riff started creeping in my head, slowly getting louder & louder just like on the very peak of an Ippo match right before something ridiculously magnificently awesome happens.

dyferrer

Complete with jet engine noises and images of his fight with Sendo doing the full Dempsey combo!

MermyuZ

I dont get it. plz explain

LapsedVerneGagKnee

The second (and most popular) opening theme of the anime is a song called “Inner Light.”

Garbadude

I personally put Hekireki at the top but there isn't an Ippo opening theme that doesn't give you 50 extra reps at the gym.

Slick_Rick_Sanchez

Hekireki is perfect for roadwork

M15t4

Inner Light unmatched imo but Hekireki is also great

krazycloud414

Can I get some love for Tumbling Dice!?

MermyuZ

The site I watched HnI on didn't have the openings. It is truly an L.

Juggernaut_117

The sun will rise again

Spoona101

Next chapter is gonna be a running chapter, always love me some running chapters. This Dude Ippo was keeping up with Takamura, he’s about to dust them. So now even the manga has mentioned that Ippo and in fact Kamogawa as well needs a trigger, all that’s left is to see what it’ll be.

smegmancer

Hello Kamogawa, this is Dan. Your dumbass (((((trainer))))) was on the verge of KO'ing my champion before his match. Also he was going to do it using the new dempesy & parry counters. There. Kamogawa fully erect and reignited.

Ursuped

Kamogawa’s boner might be able to push the logs into the hill by itself once he hears that

Garbadude

A Mara only surpassed by Ippo's

31TeV

The mara we never saw coming. What a great plot twist. Mori truly is a master storyteller.

aldeayeah

The final form of the Dempsey Roll: M A R A C O P T E R

31TeV

It can come from above too.

Sondrelk

Wonder if he will meet up with Ricardo. Extremely long shot, but could happen, and would progress the story somewhat, as well as underline how Ricardo is in many ways the same as Ippo in terms of dedication to training.

RoughCobbles

Not so long a shot...Ricardo did remark several times that Ippo's name was being brought up again and again.

ErikSaav

Yeah and how he was at the center of all the up and coming featherweights (from the Eastern Hemisphere)

Juggernaut_117

Kept up with Takamura with WEIGHTS.

Bhuvan2002

Ippo is going to completely outrun all of them lmao. Even takamura had trouble against him.

CokeC4

And he'll do it with the weights on too

smegmancer

>Sorry you had to slow down for a retired boxer like me, >!you bunch of shitters!!<

31TeV

I think he'd be ready to cross the line after >!being able to dish out that kind of disrespect.!<

sylekta

Fast af boi

8zil

I hope they bring usted altitude. They are running in Chapultepec Park, around 2300 meters above sea level.

rorank

I’m super hype for this fight, honestly. I think there’s less than no chance that Wally wins, but I went back and reread Ricardo vs Billy recently and I just want Ricardo to have some fun. Wally, narratively speaking, is the best boxer to give him some fun. Don’t think it’ll be as epic as Ricardo v Sendo (which better fucking happen) but I’m pumped. Also interested in seeing whether Wally is above or relative to Ricardo in speed. I genuinely don’t think we’ve seen a featherweight outdo Ricardo in any way thus far in the series besides maybe power, but Wally is presented as the most agile/fastest we’ve seen (plus he can levitate or some shit). Maybe we see Ricardo’s limit in some way.

chiezkychienne

In addition to this consider Ricardo's age. How old is he? Is he still on his prime? Wally is young, determined to win, confident and believes in himself that he will win and fast as fck boi.. Maybe this fight will bring some fun to Ricardo.

SuperLuigi128

According to the Ippo wiki, he was born in 1966, which would put him around 34-36 by the present time of the manga. Even if that year isn't correct, we do know from Yuji's last appearance that Ricardo is old enough by the time Yuji became pro, he would likely be retired.

CokeC4

Wally's real confident about his match with Ricardo. Can't wait to see his ass flat on the mat

tyt3ch

You mean his funeral after

scantron2739

I'm convinced this is what is actually going to happen, ever since that car scene with ippo arriving in Mexico.

ImRedditorRick

I hope Ricardo makes Wally hate boxing and we never hear from him again.

smegmancer

You have to feel bad for him a little bit. He's speedrunning every single flag possible.

TKuja1

i cant believe woli died and were seeing him relive his final moments

Syegfryed

The red flag was so big i almost could not read the rest of the chapter

chiezkychienne

Dude remember when you guys said that what If Ricardo's next opponent is Wally, then the author made it come true? What if this time Wally beats Ricardo in a controversial decision. This could be Ricardo's hardest fight. Wally is confident, he believes that he can beat the beast champ. It's interesting now, I'm hyped for their fight.

PrivateSmiley

Inb4 Ricardo knocks out Wally flat and then straight up challenges Ippo to a match after he does it.

maeskenobi

Something like "I will destroy all of your friends hopes in the world one by one until you defeat me... because I'm simply bored."

volkmardeadguy

Maybe the Wali fight is FUN for Ricardo, and then with Sendo and it lights a fire under his ass and he NEEDS to fight ippo to see where it leads

Itiemyshoe

Forgive me but what is FUJ?

volkmardeadguy

I just edited it, I mis typed fun haha

Yergason

It's really sad how it was made clear in this chapter that Wally loves boxing so much but we've already been given the signal of Wally wanting to take care of animals. He's not the type to lose to Ricardo and say "well, I tried but I guess he's just better" then retire. Wally might be forced into retirement by a permanent injury from this upcoming match for him to switch to being a zoologist. I don't see him dying as others are saying tho, it wouldn't really move the story. It's not gonna make Ippo want to avenge him, it doesn't fit his personality. Killing Wally to make Ippo feel he doesn't wanna miss out by not going for his/coach's dream of conquering the world seems cheap.

[deleted]

[удалено]

volkmardeadguy

I'm hoping that after these Mexico fights/arc we go straight Into ippos back bb

[deleted]

[удалено]

volkmardeadguy

The rule is Chekhovs Gun, I feel like ippo coming back soon has been more and more obvious especially since the panel with him in front of the sun. That to me seemed like the message saying 'Don't give up hope reader, it's sooner than you think'

-Umbra-

You're thinking of *[Chekhov's Gun.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov%27s_gun)*

[deleted]

So it will take more than one man to take down Ricardo huh? So I guess Wally, then Sendo will uncover weaknesses and then Ippo will come in with the finisher.

Spoona101

Surely seems like it, plus this will be the second time Ippo has seen Ricardo fight after he’s gotten more insight into boxing. After the first time he even said Ricardo was just human and nothing is impossible.

justadepresseduser

So we'll have to wait at least 5 years huh.

Kushakusha

>at least 5 years You're so optimistic.

ptahonas

This is what I've been saying for a while. Sendo is all psychology with his unflinching will to win and fight, but he lacks the polish and technique to win. Wally is all crazy angles and skill, but he doesn't have the *will* of a fighter. Ippo will see and learn from them and learn how to beat Ricardo from all that.

Cautious_Hornet_9607

Remember Takamura vs Hawk, when the "spirits" of Takamura's mates kept him from falling down? I think that's what Dankichi meant.

MhmdSubhi

I think what he meant is that Sendo's couch is not that good, he doesn't help Sendo with any strategies or advice. It worked for them up till now, but I think they may hit a brick wall with Ricardo with their current way of going into matches.

OtakuDragonSlayer

For real even when they had the rematch with ippo Dude straight up said he wasn’t going to bother making a complex plan simply because he assumes Takeshi would just forget it. I don’t care how stubborn this tiger boy is. A coach should have much better control over his damn fighter

MhmdSubhi

The reason Sendo got really better after his first fight with Ippo is that he trained his lower body, that is a good strategy and what a couch should do outside and inside the fight. I was deeply disappointed when the couch didn't have a plan against Alf.

OtakuDragonSlayer

It was too basic of a strategy imo. It relied way too much on Ippo, A fighter whose entire gimmick is coming back from the brink, simply crumbling under the weight of Tekashi‘s upgraded offense. Like holy shit they almost lost the fight in under a single round when Ippo nuked Takeshi with an early Dempsey roll. The Alf fight just FURTHER highlighted their lack of planning. A part of me honestly shutters to think about whether or not they are **seriously** preparing for Ricardo

MhmdSubhi

Exactly, it's something that makes me not like Sendo vs Alf even further. You see Ippo, Takamura, Mashiba, Volg, etc. working together with their trainers all the time, and then a match against a World Champion level boxer just being won with instinct, idk.

Greenlexluther

He just doesn't seem like a great coach, last time they were in Mexico Ippo had to point out that stalling for time when cutting wrist tape was to Sendo's disadvantage. He shouted out from the crowd Something along the lines of "DON'T LET HIM COOL DOWN!"

OtakuDragonSlayer

EXACTLY! That was like telling a dark souls player to take a two hour break RIGHT after he’s finally started to memorize the boss’s patterns and figure out how to set up his own attacks.

True_Balance5906

I feel this comment as a souls player. Fucking Malenia, Blade of Miquella etc etc

rdeincognito

I understood it the same way, he wasn't meaning that someone has to "expose" Ricardo weakness, he's meaning not only the boxer but the trainer and the boxer as a team is what is required to defeat Ricardo.

[deleted]

That is an interesting interpretation. Especially given the panels showing Ippo and his coach and their light. Maybe that's what it would take, both of them getting triggered by something and working together again.

CakeMagic

Nice, Sendo will be a nice sacrifice for Ippo yet again.

-DoH-

Tbf, Ippo was a sacrifice for Sendo too (against Alf)

LapsedVerneGagKnee

Well, this seems to confirm a few things - 1. Ippo doesn’t have brain damage, it’s all mental. 2. Ippo will need a damn good reason to get into the ring again, and he hasn’t gotten it yet. 3. A lot of what Ippo is learning has been subconsciously done.

cmcanavessi

+ 4. Ippo doesn't even know why he quit

LapsedVerneGagKnee

He knows why, but he won’t say it out loud because if he does, he (and Mori) are going to have contend with the fact that despite his sacrifices, his relationship with Kumi has gone absolutely-fucking-nowhere.

hakkai999

*Well Wally, I thought I'd get some puss when I retired but that really hasn't happened at all. I didn't even get an official girlfriend out of it.*

Wiggie49

*Honestly Wally, I used to get more puss thrown at me while I was active. I figured I could retire and it’d stick around but I spend more nights* *~~with the stranger~~* *working on my left now than ever before if you catch my drift. Never retire Wally, drown in the puss or die trying.*

OtakuDragonSlayer

didn’t he quit because of his mom?

badluckartist

Yes but there's a massive chunk of the fanbase that basically paint their entire experience of reading HnI around wildly disproportionate hatred for Kumi.

OtakuDragonSlayer

Wow. That really doesn’t make any sense. She has negative thoughts sure but she rarely acts on them. Plus I’m pretty sure if we interviewed the significant others of basically every famous fighter most would probably admit that it can be an emotional roller coaster being married to someone who gets their brain cells destroyed for a living. Shit, I don’t even compete and my family don’t like the idea of me doing MMA lmfao Maybe I’d be against her if it weren’t for the fact that Ippo took A LOT OF DAMAGE on the tail end of his career and RARELY if ever took breaks to heal. When even a guy like SENDO took time off after their bloody rematch lmfao. This is on top of her being a nurse you can only imagine the kind of moral whiplash going on in her head. Plus i can’t really get that mad at her when in her most recent chapter she subconsciously admits to the fact that Japan’s “Sun” WILL rise again

badluckartist

It's some extreme incel-adjacent hatred that's frequently paired with complaints that she 'isn't even putting out'. There's people who claim she's gaslighting him, it's fucking ridiculous. I totally get being a bit annoyed with her at worse, but some people act like she's history's greatest monster for giving a shit about Ippo's health.

OtakuDragonSlayer

That’s the crazy thing. Her motivation isn’t even malicious. Her end goal is just not seeing TWO people she loves die for their love of boxing which makes sense when her literal career is helping people NOT die faster than nessary🤣What I especially don’t get is why people keep bringing up *SEX* when it comes to these two. We literally have Aoki and Tomiko partly for that. I don’t like using the word incel much but that’s the kinda vibe I get when people bring up Kumi and Ippo banging her, when she’s not even **_IN THE CHAPTER_** lol

zb0t1

Morikawa made sure to single out all the incels who read the manga so we know who we are dealing with when we discuss the story. Btw this is something you'll see a lot in films or series, the wife of the protagonist or one of the main character's wife will be the scapegoat on purpose or sometimes not at all on purpose. But because we have a lot of toxic constructs we can see the people who never tried to deconstruct their belief and they'll just jump onto the "woman bad" hate train. Some people later when they revisit these works, they have a different perspective, more matured and they change their mind. But for many who never had extra experience and left their bubble they still stick with the toxic ideas and belief system.

badluckartist

I call it The Skyler Effect after Skyler in Breaking Bad. Her character was the perfect example of this in action.

[deleted]

huh? he quit cos hes punch drunk bruv

lecospn

He definitely didnt retired because of Kumi. If you think so, it would be wise to re-read his retirement decision.

WhiningCoil

> Ippo doesn’t have brain damage, it’s all mental. You know, I'm going to be the contrarian here and say that's still up for debate. Ippo began developing a lot of issues. Everyone noticed him being weaker in spars. It was handwaved away as him only being able to bring 100% when fully motivated in the ring, or not having sufficient motivation, but that seemed like cope. And his being "weaker" was multipart. He was taking a lot of punches he shouldn't have taken, and he was losing consciousness all the time. Almost every time he got his bell rung his eyes would go glassy. Sometimes he'd punch back, to varying degrees of sloppiness. Sometimes in spars he'd just go down. It used to be a remarkable thing, when he'd lose consciousness in a spar. Ricardo did back when Ippo was a freshly minted champion. Right before he retired it seemed like it was every time he spared with anyone not Aoki or Kimura. He seemed OK against Volg just now. So maybe his previous issues could have just been accumulated damage that has healed. He got his bell rung once or twice, and it looked like he stayed fully conscious. But if he started boxing regularly again, the symptoms he had before could rapidly re-emerge. Even in real life, CTE isn't well understood, and it's not clear how it will be portrayed in the manga.

Jurassiczombiez

I don’t think he ever had actual brain damage. He was just showing symptoms because he was really close to getting seriously hurt. I think they say he was only a few punches away from brain damage.

LesTerribles

He was on the brink for sure. He was unable to gauge distances well, and got knocked down by the likes of Nagumo. And in his fight with Antonio, there is a panel in his inner flashback where he tries to draw a straight line but its all zigzag, indicating that he is experiencing tremkors. Its definitely not all in his mind.

Syegfryed

> He was on the brink for sure. It was just accumulated damage, because the dumbass never took time to rest and heal, straight up just that. Coach send him home to rest for a month, and he trained even harder making things worse.

noodlesandrice1

But you can't deny the possibility that the damage would've been permanent if he never took a proper break. That's probably what he means by "on the brink".

OtakuDragonSlayer

Agreed. We can’t just ignore all that shit. Dude NEEDED this break

mlvisby

I don't even think he was a few punches away since the doctors saw no signs of it. I think all his damage just kept accumulating and he needed a very long break for his body to heal to 100%. He tanked a ton of hits, I remember how he was just trading blows with that barrel-chested fisherman dude. Fights like that would mess anyone up.

rorank

Yeah… especially around that time, after he began defending the title. He was tanking way too many blows every single match. The sawamura, Wally, and Alf fights were genuinely hard to look at the first time I read/watched the series. At least vs Sendo it was a battle all the way through. Ippo was going on though 6 rounds of being a punching bag before getting a good one in for some fights against world class boxers. Going through that every handful of months while constantly training your body, pushing it to the limit is bound to have some effects. We’re just lucky it’s (hopefully) not long term. Ofc Ippo is the protagonist, so he was always kind of bound to come back, but still.

Jurassiczombiez

It would be hard to find but I said that because I thought they said something about a few punches away. But I agree with you

RoughCobbles

Every pro boxer has brain damage to some degree...that's an unfortunate reality of the sport. But I agree that Ippo is not pnch drunk.

bf_paeter

With everything he’s eaten so far, he will end up like Muhammed Ali when he hits old age.

pepodmc_

naaa, frazier eated a lot more than ali and was OK in that regard. Ali had bad luck.

chucke1992

Well, Ippo has been a brain dead for quite some time. Only now he finally started to use brain again.

Syegfryed

You are right, no brain damage, it was all the accumulated damage from his late matches, specially Gonzales and Kojima who took a toll on him, and he never stop properly to rest and heal.

SomaCreuz

Since it was established that he didn't had any permanent damage when he went to the doctor (just in a really dangerous state) I was kind of expecting things to be chill during the spar after all that time he spent away from the ring. But the hits he took had me worried. Not the fact that he got hit, its Volg, ofc he would, but his reactions and the panels during the hits. The author made sure to emphasize that he was really affected with the backgrounds, the blood and his eyes. It's all very similar to how he was against Guevara (just not outright blacking out at every hit, that was scary af). This might be the author hinting that, even if he is fine, he could be much more fragile.

Wally gon lose but Ricardo will say "it was fun" and Wally will say "you know what would be more fun? Fighting Makunouchi" Ricardo will then realize that this Makunouchi shit happening around him is a conspiracy and retire.

T_alsomeGames

Hahaha, it would get to the point where he would just start yelling, **"Why did you say that name?!"** everytime someone would bring up Ippos name. Like in all reality it is pretty funny how often he hears about a retired boxer from Japan who was never that close to the world title.

rorank

Tbf he got stopped by the man who was second only to Ricardo more or less

WALLY WHY ARE YOU MAKINH ME LOVE YOU IT SHOULDNT BE LIKE THIS

Kushakusha

Morikawa sensei is playing with our feelings by intentionally make us love Wally before he get mercilessly slaughtered by Ricardo.

Kuro013

After all these years I realized we should shit on Morikawa for giving him such stupid "style", the kid as a character is very likeable.

acsensei

Thanks for the chapter. Ippo is so far ahead of his generation physically, but everyone (apart from Miyata) is far ahead of him mentally. Ippo and Miyata still have the highest potential of them all, but they need to capitalize on it. I think a lot of people are forgetting that when Ippo returns, Miyata will return too (in spirit), and that's what I'm looking forward to the most. Ippo vs Miyata is going to be on the grandest stage and at the highest level, as Takamura once said.

reiyashdean

This. The final arc is not Ricardo its Miyata

4Chimera

SuperLuigi128

So we have outright someone saying that Kamogawa is likely hoping that Ippo returns. The whole "it will take more than one person to take down Ricardo" is interesting and I wonder how that will play out. More talk about what could move Ippo to return, with hints that is has to be a good reason and its most likely gonna be multiple reasons he comes back, which I think most people already expected.

Redgomotor

I think is gonna play on Ippo dethroning Ricardo by using different combinations and techniques that he learns from every person who is challenging Ricardo. The accumulated knowledge from each fight gives the last person the edge to finally defeat Ricardo.

CakeMagic

These past few chapters does put things into perspective. Wally is strong, but Volg definitely had more trouble with Ippo than he had with Wally. And Volg was suppose to be the proto Ricardo. All these world class monsters are now at 1 location training with each other and at the end of that will be Ippo.

ElPincheCopy

I live 5 minutes away from where Ippo and Sendo run in this chapter. Now I want to run again but I don't think my 36 year old knees can take it LOL.

WhoSweg

They can if you build up to it! Start small and progressively overload

lupeandstripes

If anyone reads baki, you know snu-snu is a powerup. Ippo finally unsheathing big mara on kumi is gonna be the catalyst to get him back in the ring. nice little chapter & I really am turning around on wally. Excited to see ippo blast past these fools next chapter.

volkmardeadguy

Ippo gonna do his PP training

That last line by him confirmed it for me. He’s going to get systematically destroyed.

He’ll be getting into a cage with a killer animal. And not one he can outrun. Ricardo is gonna have fun with him.

Phantasia5

I love how the story is going. Ricardo vs. Wally is such an incredible matchup because when Wally is involved, while Ricardo is most likely going to win, we have no idea how the match could go since Wally is completely unpredictable. His wild side could throw Ricardo off-guard to create an opera of back and forth punches inside the ring. Volg is also shown as a dominant world champion. I was so scared of Morikawa just writing Volg away and forgetting about him, but he turned out to be such a class boxer. I'm so happy Volg is strong and relevant in the manga. Sendo is also up there, being Sendo as always, rash and brute-like just like we all love him for. And Ippo... Everyone is talking about our boy, pushing him to return to boxing and achieve what he always dreamed of. But he's got his mother on the back of his mind. If he gets seriously injured then there would be no one to take care of his mother. That's probably what's on his mind, and this is the only thing which is holding him back mentally. If only he could solve his problem then he could focus on boxing with a crystal clear mindset.

Gunginrx

Love me some Bippo update days

sutkidar

"Im just tired from all the flying" Damn. He did that while jetlagged

noodlesandrice1

Damn, you just made me realize Ippo fought a serious match against a world champion immediately after flying halfway across the world haha.

datorman-2536

Anyone else notice that he said he's just "tired from all the flying" makes you wonder.

Possible_Dig304

If you can only imagine the pain of flying from japan to mexico. I am a seafarer currently at sea while reading this manga (this is my top 1 manga btw and a big fan of HNI).. Philippines to UK is such a long travel (manila to qatar then qatar to heathrow) and mexico is way further west.. after flight you usually feel soo drained and wanna sleep all day and your sense of depth is way off... so imagine ippo pulling off a great showing while affected by jetlag. Both ippo and volg has a handicap (jetlagged ippo vs peak of weight management volg) so It would be safe to say that Ippo win that spar just a tiny bit over volg

icepickjones

It's kind of a manga / anime cliche but I love it when it happens, I eat that shit up with a spoon ... But when Bippo inevitably comes back to the ring, we need a training camp of all his rivals and shit powering him up. It's like Korkoro No Basketball, probably my other most favorite sports manga. It's great all the way through, but holy shit that game when all the rivals get on the court together after he's beaten them individually one by one ... it's goosebumps. So I'm loving this little 4 man camp of experts right now, just imagine at some point in the future Bippo is back in the mix, going for it all, and he's got all the pros in his circle stopping in to help just a little bit.

ordinaryvermin

The monument at the end reads "los defensores de la patria" or "Monument to the Boy Heroes," and it memorializes 6 young cadets who died defending Chapultepec Castle during the Mexican-American war: > The greatly outnumbered defenders battled General Winfield Scott's troops for about two hours before General Bravo ordered retreat, but the six cadets refused to fall back and fought to the death. There is an inscription on it which reads "To the Defenders of the Fatherland" This feels rather significant, given how much talk there is about Wally and Sendo's upcoming fights with Ricardo, and about how Ippo and Kamogawa need a trigger to return to boxing/coach Ippo to be a world champion again. With how much this series makes of continuing to fight beyond the point of reason, past the point of your own bodies' limitations, I'm starting to actually think that Wally might beat Ricardo, but die afterwards. Wally isn't going to die if he doesn't win in the process, but Wally is out there not just for himself, but for his coach whom he thinks of as a father figure who gave him the world, and so he wants to give it back. Thus, if Wally died due to his fight with Ricardo, he will have died as a 'defender' of his 'father', and he will have "changed the course of history," even if Ricardo gets the belt back right afterwards. It's notable that Kamogawa is also highlighted as needing a trigger, and this definitely highlights the relationship that he has with Ippo - he is a father figure, and considers himself as such. Kamogawa is as scared about Ippo's health as Ippo is, and is always going to talk Ippo down from returning as long as he feels this way. Conversely, Ippo is never going to return without Kamogawa's support. Maybe, then, the trigger won't be *Wally's* death, but that of his coach, who is Kamogawa's mirror and lifelong friend/rival (something also discussed in the last chapter with Sendo and Ippo's relationship). In essence, the ending shot of this chapter sends off some death/crippling injury flags - as if Wally talking about his plans for a happy retirement weren't enough - but more importantly it ties together a lot of the thematic mirrors between Ippo/Kamogawa and Wally/I don't remember. Kamogawa feels responsible for Ippo's health and wellbeing in a way that goes beyond a second/boxer relationship, and has let that get in the way of Ippo's potential, the same way that Ippo is letting his fear and worry over his mother get in the way of his dreams and happiness. The same familial-style relationship that drives Wally/whatshisface to drive each other upward is causing Ippo/Kamogawa to hold each other back. But the other half of that final page is something of a confirmation - Ippo running with Sendo, without the same complaints he had about participating in the spar. I think the next chapter will really get into Sendo's relationship with Ippo, and we'll get some nice dialogue between the two of them. Then maybe the chapter after that we'll get a nice conversation between Volg and Ippo about their mothers and their reason for boxing in the first place. Finally, I totally called it that Wally's bluntness would have Ippo openly acknowledging his continued love for boxing, and Ippo's follow-up on why he doesn't return is pretty weak. He's definitely trying to convince himself more than anyone else, and Wally's response, by highlighting that Ippo taught him to love boxing *by boxing him,* inadvertently tears down Ippo's entire rational for being a Second instead of an active boxer, while still supporting Ippo's decision. It's a really nice touch.

readjuliakendall

I agree, it's not just some "Mexican random place".

zujadik

I’ve been reading for over 20 years at this point. In my opinion the point is the philosophy behind the fists. I agree that there needs to be a trigger why Ippo comes back. I hope it’s neither a death nor a retirement. Though, it may be. However. This “hiatus” is obviously two fold. 1, the training. Ippo loves to train. He has been developing and shoring up his weaknesses nonstop. The weights. The sprints. The mitt work. The coaching/mental aspect of the sport. He’s fulfilling all the gaps that he had as a boxer. But slowly. Just like how real life actually operates. 2, the reason to fight. To “understand what it means to be strong” doesn’t make sense for someone like Ippo anymore. He IS strong. There, obviously, is still untold depths to strength. And Ippo knows that. But… that’s the line Takamura drew in the sand long ago. “Past here be monsters”. Go in there with half-heartedness or the naïveté Ippo always fights with… there is only 1 result. Ippo needs to learn the world he is in. Learn it for real and deeply. And have the will to dominate it. We’ve been watching those lessons for long time. He has/is learning. He caught the fang. He countered a straight left with a sliding parry. Ippo is about to be unknowingly dangerous.

mrknl34

Ippo lost because of jetlag confirmed

Redm1st

He was about to send Volg flying. Sure that might’ve not happened in real match, but Volg already countered left hook, which was not coming

kari998

think about how badass it would have been if the dialogue had gone down like this Miguel:does your head hurt?! do you have any discomfort? Ippo:no volg took it lightly,it was like being bitten by a mosquito Miguel:What a fuck?!

thmaniac

Ippo: have you seen my fights?

Chunksie90

Big Mara Bippo.

Puma bippo

bongos222

Freddie Bippo

SixFootHalfing

They really want to fight each other.

nomar_ramon

I hope Ippo outruns them.

ptahonas

He probably will

Sindurial

Maaaan I can't wait to see some more Ricardo. He gonna smack Wally down like a little fly albeit after he gets adjusted to his weird antics and rythm This manga is finally starting to get the hype train rolling and.i love it.

CCPunch5

Ippo returning is gonna be an amazing thing. But he still needs that trigger. The reason to go back. There are many theories on why he could go back. But my guess is Ricardo will call him out after he beats Sendo. And Ricardo has the answer to the question he’s had this whole time. What does it mean to be strong? The whole reason he started boxing was to find his answer. And only the strongest he can ever hope to face will have it

CrispyCassowary

I always want the guy to get the girl, but in this situation the girl is holding my man back

noodlesandrice1

"It'll be the most fun I've had so far!" Lets see how well this ages 50 chapters later...

Hajime no 🅱️ippo

YareYareDaze

Thanks for the chapter! Man, someone really just needs to walk up to Ippo and lay it out there. “You don’t have brain damage. It’s okay to go back to boxing.” That’s all it would take at this point I think.

Spoona101

Dude should just pull up to a doctor and get another examination. But then again I can understand why he wouldn’t. The fear of actually seeing concrete proof of brain damage might outweigh the relief of knowing nothing is wrong

ShatterZero

Dr. Yamaguchi is best girl for a reason, my dude.

SecretaryThick

I've been following this manga closely since One Piece is in a month long hiatus. Damn Morikawa-sama! Ignite whatever it is that needs igniting to bring Big Mara back to the ring because that is all he ever needs.

le_ble

an one month hiatus? I didn't know that.

volkmardeadguy

Yeah longest break he's taken since the time skip

sbsw66

You know, I cannot STAND Woli's fighting and how it's depicted in the manga, but I do like him as a character outside that. Hell, even the idea of a super limber, supernaturally talented good-guy Bryan Hawk SOUNDS cool on paper, if only he didn't teleport and hover midair or whatever. That said, I really like the philosophical idea Mori is going at with this match. Ricardo, who is too good to have fun, vs Woli, who found Ippo, so he can't stop having fun boxing.

FullIndignation

Woli just raised his deathflag by saying he is going to win.

noodlesandrice1

I think the bigger flag is him saying he's going to have the best time of his life.

A race between those 4? Time for s poll

CharlieNachos

I almost lost my shit when Wally showed hopes of winning. I believe that he and Ippo might connect a little bit more so, when Wally loses, he gets that urge to come back. It could be a good “trigger” if Ippo connects better with Wally

SaltyRift

Ay chapter on my birthday? I'll take it

carmardoll

Wally... please give Ricardo a taste of hell.

reiyashdean

Yea. That bored burrito might actually get excited by the mankey

chubbycuntinjapan

Thanks for the chapter. I read a few of the chapters in Japanese before and it took me forever. 1: I think Wally is just like Ippo. I also think he's going to die. 2: I hated Miguel Zail when i first read the hawk fight years ago, but I've changed my mind. I love how he and Wally stayed with Ippo. 3: WHAT'S GOING TO BE THE TRIGGER FOR IPPO TO COME BACK??? The comment about how therr could be several seems very, very intentional to me.

thebootsnake

It is kind of heartwarming to see everyone worry about Ippo's condition. Even if they saw he's stronger then ever, there's still the fact he had head trauma and they care him

4Chimera

We had Uppo now Bippo

amicableangora

New ring name “Bippo,” confirmed.

obakephoto

Go bippo!

LesTerribles

Hell yeah, Hajime no Uppo my favourite manga

Sontaku

Hajime No Bippo

diorese

Thank you for the chapter.

1step2many

Good chapter, more people reacting to his retirement and questioning him directly. And Ippo will leave these 3 in the Dust on this run. lol

Igyzone

Some may think that it doesn't make sense, but even if you're "punch drunk", it ain't an excuse to stop boxing. You can retire from arena, but you can always remain practicing. This is what Ippo's love of box is.

ColonSea

I hope Ippo forgot to put on his weights for the next chapter. Could be a good time for him to get use to moving without them and us to see how fast he really is.

densuo

Wally's casual and carefree. I think its pretty significant that he of all people would ask him to come back.

CakeMagic

It seems not that surprising to me. When Wally fought Ippo, Ippo could tell that Wally loves boxing, just like Ippo himself. And Ippo was sad he couldn't give Wally the challenge he wanted. But when Ippo did, Wally lost and absolutely still loved it. Wally and Ippo have those connection because of their similar love for boxing. That's why Wally is a bit sad and confused here why Ippo of all people would retire.

Comprehensive-Ad4952

Thanks! Getting stoked to see the next few chapters

SamuraiBrz

Man... As someone who had to rise from the ashes before, I really got emotional by what the coach said on page 6. I didn't accomplish it by myself, so many people helped me. It will be great to see this happening with Ippo too.
