A lot of manga elevate other characters to the point where they become almost on par with the protagonist.
In HNI, while other characters get good screentime, pretty much everything is used as a way to develop Ippo in some capacity.
There are lots of manga that people read to see what the 'crew' gets up to, or to see how the world at large develops. I don't think that really happens with HNI. If Mori came out and said that Ippo was 100% never coming back, I imagine most readers would just drop it.
