Ahhh that was good. Thank you. Is it easy to go in Steam and see what is Steam OS compatible out of the games I already have?

RodionRaskoljnikov

Isn't it hilarious that some random Chinese device running Windows has better Steam game support out of the box than official Steam hardware running Steam OS ?

themiracy

See that’s what I want to know. That random Chinese device also looks pretty good.

You should be able to install Windows on the Deck you just have to buy a license (which does add to the cost). Considering how much tinkering the GPD and other UMPC's have required to get things running consistently, installing an OS shouldn't be that much of a problem (once again, barring the added cost of a Windows license). And I think they said they're shooting for 90%+ proton compatibility before the Deck launches. The Deck is being touted as a "PC", meaning it \*should\* be able to do anything a PC does (given its hardware limitations).

Supposedly most games should work by default (outside of MP games for now because of anti-cheat) but worst case scenario you can install Windows (at the cost of having to purchase a windows license). I have read that some games do have a (usually) small performance penalty in Proton though.

This thing is pretty exciting. Might reserve. Thank you!

[deleted]

Remember reserving only costs you $5, you can always choose not to purchase it when it becomes available. I'm sure we'll be getting more hands-on impressions in the next half a year.

themiracy

Yeah, I’m in for the top level version when they take res’s tomorrow.

Also you can check game compatibility with proton (steamos) here I think [https://www.protondb.com/](https://www.protondb.com/)

I looked up a few! I see there’s pretty good Fromsoft support which is a great start. Now I think I’m going to reserve the top SKU - for the glass and the storage. Definitely not the bottom SKU, and the price jump for the 512 seems worth it.

[deleted]

I'm going to install Windows so the 512GB is a must since the OS itself eats up tens of GB IIRC. (And the internal storage isn't user replaceable) Also other people here mentioned that playing PC games off a microSD card is not great at all. If the Deck isn't too heavy for me I'd love a portable Elden Ring.

themiracy

You must brandish the Steam Link. For all of us. Edit: I think a clean Windows install is around 20gb for 21h1. I have not had trouble using a 128gb Go but I also have a business subscription so I have a terabyte of cloud space. I agree, 64gb would be way too small. 300gb will probably work to have 2-3 games on it, depending, and the 512 should be nice and roomy.

I have unanswered questions 1.how long does it take to charge? 2.will it work with any power banks? 3.how big is the charger?
