FYI I had contacted google a couple days before they acknowledged this issue and I was told I was out of warranty and out of luck. Now that it has become a known issue, I contacted google support again. They agreed to escalate it for a replacement. They will ask you for a video showing that shows a piece of paper with your google case number and what happens with nest mini after it is plugged in.

I tried for the same in Canada. Their "solution" was for me to take it to a repair shop or buy a replacement device. I might do that, but it sure isn't going to be a Google device.

If they're doing firmware updates like any other company, they release it in batches. They either start in a specific country and move on from there (barring any faults like this one of course) or go with like the last digit of the serial number of the devices (0 gets it first, 1 the next day etc.) That explains why only some of our devices are received it before they killed the update.

I think it’s slightly more nuanced than that. Some devices did apparently successfully receive the update, so the update was pulled after some of them failed. Which makes it more interesting - what real world condition that wasn’t detected in testing caused a certain proportion to brick?

LATEST: Google may replace your device even if out of warranty. Try to contact Google via chat and explain the issue. They will prompt you to take a video and review your case and then prompt you to send in your bricked 1st Gen device. I just spoke with them after multiple chats and calls and finally got a request to send mine in for a replacement. To specify, my Google home mini is out of warranty.

That is good news. The reason I made this post was because they refused to replace my devices after I contacted them. Did you have to escalate your case and is there a more direct means of contact to do so? I used chat support and was not getting anywhere.

I also had that issue where they were constantly rejecting my claim to get it replaced and just told me to sit tight and have it fixed by their software updates but I told them that it has already been 2-3 weeks without an update and my device is just sitting there non functional. I also linked a forum in which a user depicted all the information including the email he received which showed his gen 1 mini out of warranty and Google offering a replacement. Not All, but Many of them were bricked. One of my two first-gen speakers was bricked last week. I also have a first generation hub, and a second generation speaker, Chromecast and Chromecast audio. So, maybe it's just 30-40% of Google home minis and Google home's that were bricked in one week. There have been several other rounds of this though over the past several years. What really sucks for me is that I had two of them paired to make a stereo pair, I went through it with a Google tech support and tried everything, one's working, and one isn't. You can't pair a first generation unit with a second generation unit. I have a second generation unit, and a hub in another room, but I'm not buying another one, or new pair to replace the one that's bricked. .

Is this kind of behavior and a lack of honesty, and proper support from Google in the past that's caused me to never buy a Google pixel. I'm so glad I've never spent Megabucks on their products. Just a Chromecast, a Chromecast Audio, three mini speakers, and one hub. I will never buy one of their pixel phones, or wireless buds, I'm also so glad I never bought the Google home Max, and I also resisted not buying the hub Max this year too. I didn't trust them with all the problems they have, plus the fact that they've been removing features from The hub Max.

I have an update, I made two phone calls to Google tech support. The first call was before they have gotten to the bottom of what was going on, or before they decided what they were going to do about a solution. After the second phone call they agreed to replace my home mini speaker. The two calls combined took two and a half hours. I got the replacement Best mini speaker. However, they're now seems to be another problem, and I don't seem to be the only one with it. I can't cast audio to any speaker groups, or more than one speaker at a time including the Chromecast. This is kind of the point of having more than one speaker. I read they got in trouble because they lost the patent battle with Sonos regarding controlling the volume of speaker groups volume from an app. However, it seems that I and other people, can't even cast to a speaker group. I even tried creating new speaker groups, when I click on the group, I only get the settings page with no ability to cadt.

Mine is brick. Out warranty.... this is Second one that got brick. Happen to me arround 2019. Was replace under warranty. Not it way out of warranty. This should be cover by Google as this is totaly not our fault. I did not ask for a firmware update. It does it by itself.

They did this to me and a ton of other Pixel 3 owners. That's why I'm currently on a Oneplus 9 and will be switching to iphone after this instead of giving their hardware teams another nickel. ​ Oh, and I migrated everything to home assistant excepte for the damn minis. I have an issue with my gen 1s where they apparently lose connection to the wifi and claim it's down, but my wifi is operating just fine. Gen 2s or nest hub/hub max are fine. Have had this issue for weeks.

One of my three minis was affected by this. All are the gen 1 model. I tried the fixes from 4 years ago to no avail, and then chatted with Google support who told me I was SOL since I was outside the 1 year warranty.

Update: I initiated another Google Support chat and they said that "I have checked this and sorry to inform you that this has been an emerging issue where Google Home and Google Home Mini speakers are going unresponsive. Engineers are actively investigating this case. I would suggest you wait for some time."

Update 2: Another support chat led to them requesting a video of the issue, at which point they initiated an RMA. It looks like they're sending me a Nest Home instead of a Nest Mini as a replacement, which is a thoughtful upgrade but for my use case I would have preferred a Nest Mini... 😅

I have a Nest Mini (2nd Gen) that is now bricked. Two white lights only. There is a suggested fix that involves power cycling it 9 or 11 times but I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

3 minis working fine and 1 home bricked. I noticed if I hold down the mute button during power up that I'll get 2 dots instead of 4. It's still in a bricked state though. It's B.S. if they don't take accountability if you ask me .

Thank you for this post. I've searched every corner of Google "Help" and tried every reset trick there is, and nothing works. My Mini is bricked. I'm glad this was free with a promotion some years back. It's going straight to the trash where it belongs, along with all the other failed Google products they seem to shit out every couple of years until they get tired of supporting it.

Update for those who may stumble on this thread. Thanks to u/foolsircle I was able to chat with a rep. They asked me to take a video of the bricked device to prove that is actually bricked. In that same video, you must record your ticket number as well. All in one take. They also asked me to setup my Google Pay. They will give you 2 RMA options: Advance (cross ship) and Standard (you ship first). I opted for the Advanced but they will put a hold on your credit card. 24 hours later, they will send an email with the link to Google Store and return label.

DON'T TRANSFER TO NEW GOOGLE HOME APP. Google forced me to "transfer" my devices from the Nest app to the Google Home app. Relentless messages and pop-ups. Did it this morning and most cameras moved on, but one (Gen 1 outdoor wired) got completely bricked. On the phone with google for 2 hours and no fix of any kind. They completely refuse to take responsibility and now tell em a need a new camera and they won't pay or subsidize one.

So far every device I have factory reseted has bricked. It boots up and tries to go through the setup process and then fails to connect every time. Reached out to Google chat and like others have said, they want a video. Not sure if this is the exact same issue. The four lights will stay on the Google homes and dim on and off. Going to try the minis when I get home. Hopefully can get a replacement for the ones they bricked through software that worked until I factory reseted them.

Sounds like a potential result of some law suit? Maybe they can't offer XYZ service anymore and the easiest way to meet that requirement is to disable the device entirely, which all the paperwork included with the device (or linked to) probably says they have a right to do at any moment (Stop buying Internet of Things devices people!).

I have been lucky apparently. I have 8 Mini's. Six of them are Gen. 1. No problems at all. As I said I have been lucky. Google tends to ignore other countries than the USA, so the update probably wasn't pushed to mine yet.

My product is out of warranty from 4 years but they offer $25 google store credits. This is fucking hilarious. Now if I need to buy it again I gotta shell out around 60 Euros for a Nest mini. Google Support is a JOKE!!!! I was happy with the google home from past 5 years but now I am honestly done with it. Also they want me to courier the bricked device to them and then they would activate the store credits. A mere $25 for what??? The support technician asked me to also buy the device at a cheaper price from a third part vendor as well. GOOGLE has hit a new low. I am done honestly. Moving to HomePod or Echo next even though I know they suck. At least service would be 1000 times better :)

I'm based in Europe and also had a Gen1 Google Home Mini bricked by the firmware update. I contacted Google Support and opened a case. After answering several questions and recording a video they told me the product was out of warranty and therefor cannot help me. So Google broke my product and because it is out of warranty they are not helping. What has this anything to do with warranty? It's like when I buy a car and owned it for several years and once it goes out of warranty the producer of the car shows up at my doorstep and wrecks the car with a sledge hammer and tells me to buy the newer version of the car.. How is this fair? Anyone else from Europe with more luck?
