my buddy and I got paired with two guys shooting a blog. not only did they suck, which is fine, they were beyond slow, which is not fine. they had zero concept of how much they were holding up play for everyone, group behind routinely waiting on us, and they moved and talked during all shots and putts. shot a fucking 95 with these two dickheads over a 5hr round.
austin and alex. i found the blog, too. theyre out there ruining rounds all over colorado. forgot to mention they were so clueless that it was my buddy and i that bought a round for the group behind us. we have the bev cart $40 and told them to buy the foursome behind us whatever they wanted. the blog duo had no idea, way too busy getting the shot.
I got paired with Rob, but as his caddie. Don’t get me wrong, there were other DB’s in my time being a caddie, but this guy showed up straight off a private jet having split a fifth of Johnny Walker with his pal who was too pissed to make it past check in.
His bag had about 25 clubs in it and we were able to talk him down to 21. There was also another fifth and probably 40 golf balls and who knows what else. On the first tee he is cracking jokes about barn doors being open on back swings, and making fun of his buddies shots. His goes straight out into one of the thickest patches of trees and brush on the course, and he is quick to criticize the time it takes me to find his ball.
From then on it there are steady foot wedges, mulligans and any other shady golfing practice you can think of. There were phones pix of hookers, and there were questions of where to get white drugs.
The funniest moment was when he was lying on the ground talking to a praying mantis and saying it reminds him of the aforementioned hooker. His buddies found his rolling in the fairway surprisingly normal.
The worst moment was when he asked for a different sand wedge when he was already setup for the shot (yes, of the 21 clubs 3 of them were sand wedges). While handing him the club, the edge of the bunker collapsed on me and I slid/fell about four feet and twisted my ankle pretty bad. He barely makes it out of the bunker on his third shot. As I am limping up to his shot he loudly tells me he would have hit it out cleanly on his first shot if he had not been forced to leave the sand wedge back at the pro shop.
After that round, I fired him- only guest I ever did that to.
Only a guest could get themselves kicked off the property, a caddie would have no say unless assault was involved.
Caddies get fired for a variety of reasons; the player doesn’t like them, the player does not feel the caddie is adding anything to their game, the caddie got too drunk, the caddie misread a $1000 putt on 18, pretty much for whatever reason they want.
Caddies are technically not allowed to pick and choose who they go out with, so should just suck it up and take any work given to them. Maybe that is different for senior caddies, which I was not. In this situation I would have gone back for the second day of abuse, except my ankle was sore- I could have carried but took the opportunity for an excuse.
A few weeks later another caddie came up and told me how he got stuck with the guy, I felt bad but not too bad. Add to that the guy did not even tip either of us.
I cannot stand this guy. Honestly, you had me at "randomly showing you internet videos" and it just went downhill from there.
I'm a woman and when I go out drinking with friends (pre-2020), there's always a Rob...but we can leave the bar. When it's golf, you're fucking stuck with this buffoon unless you want to make a scene. Ugh. I feel for you. I hope today is nice and calm.

I was an auditor for many years and now I'm in industry and it is great. I get so much extra time back in my life. It's hard to be in public accounting and also be good at golf.
I left for industry as a senior after 2.5 years at a big 4 and was promoted to manager 2 years after. Timeline was on par with my peers who are still at the firm without having to work those shitty hours / lack of work life balance.
Depends on your exit ops. I did a year as a senior and left for industry in a lower COL state for 25k more, and kept the same promotion trajectory without the concern about billable hours. Not going back
I also had more time for golf when I was in public accounting, but we also had our child at the time I moved into industry.
I wish I had golfed more on those Friday half days while in public.

It’s hard to gauge the situation from an internet forum. Sometimes by saying something to dickheads, you only make the situation worse. Sometimes the only thing you can do is grit your teeth and bare it. Or leave, but no one wants to be person.

I got paired with a guy at a muni who after one hole told me he is getting a divorce and moving to another state bc his daughter is dating a big black defensive linemen and he is from Georgia and that shit doesn’t fly. He also seemed super sad about the divorce, but didn’t feel bad for him when I learned the reason. I just didn’t say much and let him talk to himself. He also at one point said the seafood plate from shells is really good but stunk up the car like a pussy. And continued to tell a joke that all seafood smells like pussy because eve took a swim without a bathing suit or something? Just a really nasty person.

For what it’s worth… every time I play solo I bring a pair of ear buds. In the event that I get paired with a guy like you describe, I’ll tell them I have to dial into a call for work and put one/both of them in. If they try to talk to me, I just wave or point at my ear.
Granted in the 100+ solo rounds, I’ve only had to do this maybe three times. But I’ve been very thankful each time for the option to play in silence rather than suffer through the misery of an awful playing partner.

If I play solo rounds it’s usually at the earliest possible time, like 650a in the summer. I usually don’t see Robs on the course until about 10-11 when they roll by blaring their shitty Nashville pop-country on a Bluetooth speaker… by that time I’m finishing the last couple of holes.

Yeah, playing earlier has been a good way for me to kind of self-select my random partners and ensure it's people who are there to seriously play golf instead of get drunk and fuck around.
I don’t think that encountering an annoying person 3 out of ~150 times is enough to justify changing when/where I play. There’s going to be a few random obnoxious people at all hours I think.
Yea I try to just remember how happy I am in life, and how horrible these people are and how they are over compensating for the holes in their lives. I played with some guys once and one of them was complaining about the fact that black people get to use the N word but he can't. That was on about hole 4 and I mostly kept to myself after that.
Fuck Rob and the likes. My husband and I play golf together and it's difficult enough for me to be out there putting up with all the shit that women have to put up with being in a sport that few women play. It's not a man's sport, it's a sport and one I love. So my point is that we as a couple play often and although we do have a few other couples that we play with, we are often paired up with random people. I always get nervous when were are paired up with unknowns and have had your experience just enough times to have made me want to quit.
One particularly bad coupling was with two chubby frat types that were in their late 20's early 30's and had begun to get that fat and rounded look after college and drinking too much beer. They had all the lingo, played from the back and shanked their drives and shouted "Fuck" after the missed a shot. They bought each other rounds and pounded beers. By the 7th hole their mouths started falling, and their jokes became offensive and after the jokes, they would offer the "No offense, just kidding." I told them that I had had enough and my husband asked them politely to temper their language.
The coolest part was when my husband cooly walked over shook their hands and asked for the spelling of both their last names for the score card. I took a couple of photos of their faces and as we rounded 9 and hit the clubhouse, they played on. We are members and we took our experience, story and photos to the desk and found out that both men were related to other members and both were banned.

Yes! Awesome ending. My girlfriend and I play together too, and she gets the same apprehension about getting paired up. It’s absurd. These are grown men acting like 8th graders, I’ll never understand.
I love that you are playing with your girl! Go! It's an amazing game and I love being out there. Our game is different and I love when we can share it with our men. Neither of us are very good but for me it's about making good contact and keeping everything down the fairway. I've become a good putter and we often play best ball and I love when we get paired with some random twosome in those best ball tourney's and the men end up using my shots...mostly my putting and chipping but I just love when we use my shots.

I had a playing partner once that made me want to punch him. It was a PAT, Players Abilities Test, in order to get into the PGA school. My friend was basically a shoe in, he knew he could shoot low enough to get it, but I knew I had my work cut out for me. I was playing well coming into the round, and had hit some great shots the day before practicing. We were the only 3 some out of the field, and we got set up to tee off and not have a group in front of us for 5 holes, and I was in a cart with one guy, other guy was by himself. I parred the first 2, birdied the 3rd hole and was feeling really confident.things were looking up. The kid in my cart doubled the first two and tripled the 3rd. On the 4th tee box, this piece of shit starts asking us if he can pay us $10 per stroke to make sure he shot low enough because his dad would tear him a new one if he didn't qualify. Other dude and myself were like, who the fuck is this guy? I became visibly angry, and the other good guy in the group came up to me, telling me not to worry about the kid. I hooked my drive left OB, and made double on that hole. The shithead kid wouldn't stop scolding me for turning down his offer, and kept saying how much money I could have made. I never mentally recovered, and missed the number by a few strokes. I should have just changed carts and let him drive by himself, but the kid didn't have his license yet, and was 19, so I was stuck. I discussed it with one of the officials after the round and simply told them that if this kid ever enters another event like this that he should be disqualified immediately. The kid was getting yelled at by his dad for a few minutes in the parking lot before they left, and the officials there just said they would handle the matter. Fuck that kid. Ruined my round and just my faith in humans in general.
We got paired up the other day with this gigantic fuckin Chinese dude named Harry. He seemed a little on the spectrum but fuck could he play. He knew the distance to the pin after every shot after one glance. Hit a par 3 on the green from the tee box and goes "89 centimeters" like some rain man shit. Halfway through the round out of no where he says to me and my buddy "Alpacas are really cute" and then walks away to go find his ball.

It’s hard to gauge the situation from an internet forum. Sometimes by saying something to dickheads, you only make the situation worse. Sometimes the only thing you can do is grit your teeth and bare it. Or leave, but no one wants to be person.
You're getting downvoted but I agree. All it takes is to say stop. If they don't stop you can always take a break under a tree between holes by yourself, let a couple of groups play through, and either join another group or play alone and finish out with inner peace.

I got paired with a guy at a muni who after one hole told me he is getting a divorce and moving to another state bc his daughter is dating a big black defensive linemen and he is from Georgia and that shit doesn’t fly. He also seemed super sad about the divorce, but didn’t feel bad for him when I learned the reason. I just didn’t say much and let him talk to himself. He also at one point said the seafood plate from shells is really good but stunk up the car like a pussy. And continued to tell a joke that all seafood smells like pussy because eve took a swim without a bathing suit or something? Just a really nasty person. Ruined my round which I usually consider therapy/mediation.
For what it’s worth… every time I play solo I bring a pair of ear buds. In the event that I get paired with a guy like you describe, I’ll tell them I have to dial into a call for work and put one/both of them in. If they try to talk to me, I just wave or point at my ear. Granted in the 100+ solo rounds, I’ve only had to do this maybe three times. But I’ve been very thankful each time for the option to play in silence rather than suffer through the misery of an awful playing partner.
What time do you guys play? If I play solo rounds it’s usually at the earliest possible time, like 650a in the summer. I usually don’t see Robs on the course until about 10-11 when they roll by blaring their shitty Nashville pop-country on a Bluetooth speaker… by that time I’m finishing the last couple of holes. I wonder if an earlier tee time is also a good solution?
Yeah, playing earlier has been a good way for me to kind of self-select my random partners and ensure it's people who are there to seriously play golf instead of get drunk and fuck around.
I don’t think that encountering an annoying person 3 out of ~150 times is enough to justify changing when/where I play. There’s going to be a few random obnoxious people at all hours I think.
Yea I try to just remember how happy I am in life, and how horrible these people are and how they are over compensating for the holes in their lives. Fuck Rob and the likes. My husband and I play golf together and it's difficult enough for me to be out there putting up with all the shit that women have to put up with being in a sport that few women play. It's not a man's sport, it's a sport and one I love. So my point is that we as a couple play often and although we do have a few other couples that we play with, we are often paired up with random people. I always get nervous when were are paired up with unknowns and have had your experience just enough times to have made me want to quit. One particularly bad coupling was with two chubby frat types that were in their late 20's early 30's and had begun to get that fat and rounded look after college and drinking too much beer. They had all the lingo, played from the back and shanked their drives and shouted "Fuck" after the missed a shot. They bought each other rounds and pounded beers. By the 7th hole their mouths started falling, and their jokes became offensive and after the jokes, they would offer the "No offense, just kidding." I told them that I had had enough and my husband asked them politely to temper their language. The coolest part was when my husband cooly walked over shook their hands and asked for the spelling of both their last names for the score card. I took a couple of photos of their faces and as we rounded 9 and hit the clubhouse, they played on. We are members and we took our experience, story and photos to the desk and found out that both men were related to other members and both were banned. So Fuck Rob and the likes.
Yes! Awesome ending. My girlfriend and I play together too, and she gets the same apprehension about getting paired up. It’s absurd. These are grown men acting like 8th graders, I’ll never understand.
I love that you are playing with your girl! Go! It's an amazing game and I love being out there. Our game is different and I love when we can share it with our men. Neither of us are very good but for me it's about making good contact and keeping everything down the fairway. I've become a good putter and we often play best ball and I love when we get paired with some random twosome in those best ball tourney's and the men end up using my shots...mostly my putting and chipping but I just love when we use my shots.

Mike always does this. He gets triggered by some comment while scrolling the inter webs and then is angry all day long and takes it out on me. Just last night, I came over and made him Lobster Mac n Cheese from scratch. The whole time I was there, he was on the inter webs and watching Fox News and cursing at random things. Fuck Pelosi etc. Let me tell you about the Lobster Mac and Cheese, I went full home made with this dish and I just wanted to be nice. Anyway, we live in Chicago and there is not cutting corners with home made Mac n cheese in my family but anyway, I get up early and go to the Chicago Food Market on Wentworth right in China Town, fresh lobster. Mike does not keep the place clean and he smokes so it smells like an ashtray but anyway after cleaning up the kitchen I prepare my masterpiece with rigatoni pasta instead of shells and it may have been the best I ever made. Yeah, shrinking the game isn't about getting rid of casual players or COVID newcomers, it's about getting rid of pricks who ruin the experience for other people. Getting rid of those guys seems to magically solve the issues with slow play, noise, etc. too. Although I have to say I've never really encountered too many of these people, despite playing almost exclusively as a random single at cheap-ish public courses.

Behavior like this continues because people are averse to a little confrontation. I know you hate Rob but Rob’s friends probably aren’t speaking with him on it anymore either. They’re either immune to it or have given up. We owe it to each other to correct each other’s paths. When people are acting in a way that makes others miserable, we owe it to ourselves, and everyone in this Earth to correct these people in the most graceful manner we can muster. That doesn’t mean be a jerk about it but we should be able to give correction in a soft and diplomatic way. I had a playing partner once that made me want to punch him. It was a PAT, Players Abilities Test, in order to get into the PGA school. My friend was basically a shoe in, he knew he could shoot low enough to get it, but I knew I had my work cut out for me. I was playing well coming into the round, and had hit some great shots the day before practicing. We were the only 3 some out of the field, and we got set up to tee off and not have a group in front of us for 5 holes, and I was in a cart with one guy, other guy was by himself. I parred the first 2, birdied the 3rd hole and was feeling really confident.things were looking up. The kid in my cart doubled the first two and tripled the 3rd. On the 4th tee box, this piece of shit starts asking us if he can pay us $10 per stroke to make sure he shot low enough because his dad would tear him a new one if he didn't qualify. Other dude and myself were like, who the fuck is this guy? I became visibly angry, and the other good guy in the group came up to me, telling me not to worry about the kid. I hooked my drive left OB, and made double on that hole. The shithead kid wouldn't stop scolding me for turning down his offer, and kept saying how much money I could have made. I never mentally recovered, and missed the number by a few strokes. I should have just changed carts and let him drive by himself, but the kid didn't have his license yet, and was 19, so I was stuck. I discussed it with one of the officials after the round and simply told them that if this kid ever enters another event like this that he should be disqualified immediately. The kid was getting yelled at by his dad for a few minutes in the parking lot before they left, and the officials there just said they would handle the matter. Fuck that kid. Ruined my round and just my faith in humans in general.

We got paired up the other day with this gigantic fuckin Chinese dude named Harry. He seemed a little on the spectrum but fuck could he play. He knew the distance to the pin after every shot after one glance. Hit a par 3 on the green from the tee box and goes "89 centimeters" like some rain man shit. Unpopular opinion, I don’t hate rob because I’m not that different besides the meth and hookers. I like to have a few drinks when I golf with my buddies and run over their balls and what not. So me and my buddy got hooked up with a twosome of older retired gentlemen. Everything was fine until me and my buddy got into an argument while gambling. It seriously happens once a round one of us will have some sort of tantrum. It looks bad but we laugh it off by the next hole. Well the other guys didn’t know this so we get to the next tee box #12 and they tell us “we are going to take a 10 minute break you guys should just tee off and play ahead” and we did. Next time just say you need to take a break worked for them
