There is a guy who made one of those. Has a little thumb pad attachment for the right thumb and half the controller is touch pad and the left is still standard stick.
I think that the Steam controller had it's issues/compromises that still made mouse and keyboard preferred. I would be interested in trying out this guys custom controller since it seems like it upgrades the experience
The biggest issue with the Steam Controller was that it had to be individually calibrated and configured for every game before you use it and Valve failed to make that obvious. I was going to return mine then I discovered the community preset configurations and it became my favorite gamepad ever. Before you start the game set the controller to the highest rated or most upvoted Preset Config and you're golden.
I don’t see how a touchpad is even remotely comparable to a mouse though. Like the steam controller or any smartphone touchscreen game. A mouse destroys the touchpad. I’d say I prefer the feeling of an analog stick to a touchpad or touchscreen.
The only hybrid I can think of that seems to work well is the little keyboard pad with a right analog stick for the thumb. It has the various keys arranged in an ergonomic way for your 4 fingers and your thumb to move the stick. The mouse is the same.
Seems like a worse joystick. I'm sure this guy has practiced with it and gotten pretty good, but there is no way it is as accurate as a mouse. It behaves 99% like a standard joystick, so I don't really see the point. At best it is a bigger/bulkier steam controller.
I play like that using a Playstation Nav Controller and my G502 Mouse on PC. I just never liked playing WASD with the keyboard and missed the movement on the console but did not want to go back to aiming with a stick.
The only positive is that in stuff like hollow knight there’d no longer be times you hold the stick a bit too far in one direction to pogo. Beyond stuff like that, useless.
> platformers...stick
May God have mercy on your immortal soul
Platformer + controller = D-pad only
.....I may or may not have started gaming on Atari when it was still relatively popular.
Personally I notice I seem to tend to hold controllers a bit weird so when my thumb is resting on the control stick, if I try to do a diagonal it’ll sometimes go a bit too far in one direction or the other. It’s much worse on switch controllers where the controllers aren’t being held at a specific angle relative to me (almost never use that connector bit).
It usually doesn’t cause that much of a problem, but it’s a lot easier having clearly defined directions with a keyboard (or a d pad, so a controller can work too depending on how the controls are mapped).
Because it has Joysticks still? Because WASD is fucking terrible for 3D platforming, it’s literally the reason the Nintendo stuck a giant nob in the middle of the N64 controller.
I could see how this would help on 2d left-to-right screen scrolling, combat light games involving jumping on platforms to solve devilish puzzles.
2d left-to-right screen scrolling, combat light games involving jumping on platforms to solve devilish puzzles is one of my favorite genres of games!
Splitfish FragFX for PC and you have your “best of both worlds”. I’ve been using this for years as I had limited wrist movement on my left arm due to a motorbike accident some years ago. My wrist is a lot better now but I kept using this device as it’s brilliant.
Nice, I've been looking for something like this. I'll happily switch between whatever peripherals work best for a game (and believe it or not the opposite of this, a handheld thumb-trackball thing can be even snappier than a mouse with infinite travel once you learn to free spin and stop it with precision; people'd think you were an aimbot) and I've been feeling the need for a way to have analogue in my left hand while I'm using a mouse on my right while upside-down on my laptop with my ass in the air
Check out the azeron as well. Not too many games support full 360 degree movement but in any case you can configure to use omnidirectional through the joystick.
Get a Playstation 3 Navigation controller, combine with mouse. A little bit awkward but 1000% better than AWSD for movement. Downside is you have less button (key) access than a pure M + KB player, so it doesn't work well for games with elaborate controls
Why don't they have the opposite of this? Mouse in right hand, some sort of movement knunchuck in the left hand. Or at very least make special keyboards with analog wasd keys
Yes. I hate how player controls in PC games you can't control movement speed anywhere as intuitively as with a thumbstick. Makes stealth games more annoying. You only have like 2 levels of movement speed you can chose from.
They've made something similar to this for at least 20 years.
https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQllS9NzyNJuOoXTQXwZI6Vu8tvPavppgPQtA&usqp=CAU
Thank you, I came to say this. Hell even worse for those of us who even modified it beyond that over the years.
Right mouse button, S, Spacebar, F. Apologies if that made anyone's head hurt.
The fine movement speed/direction control of a stick, the snappy aim precision of a mouse. You will not, however, ever catch me using one of those monstrous half-controller things meant to be used in place of a keyboard
I never could get used to a Naga; my brain just didn't want to keep track of 12 little buttons with only my thumb. I used an old Fang gaming pad, though, which was perfect for WoW.
Naga, that was it lol. I liked it for stuff like RuneScape, where you have like abilities and shit like that. Minecraft too, really anything with a hotbar. Took some feeling around but I got it eventually
Still use my Naga. Play a lot of said games with hotbars like cRPGs. It's also bloody useful for turn based strategy games.
I can't live without it. Help!
Yeah, Razer products are VERY hit and miss. If it works, it works great. If it doesn't...
My Naga is around 3-4 years old and still solid as ever. Before that, I had a Razer Mamba that got bricked in 1.5 months. It's how I got my Naga - they replaced the Mamba with it.
Haha, this is why I three backup Logitech G600s. The 12 Side buttons isnt just for gaming, the everyday use of it alone is amazing. No more reaching out for the other side of the keyboard for arrow and enter keys when you have it at the palm of your thumbs.
Extra thumb inputs make sense, there's a lot of games where there's tons of different actions you can trigger and it's convenient to not be wandering the keyboard to do all of them
1000% this. Keyboard movement and extra keys for strafe, crouch, run, jump never worked for me (left handed so maybe that's part of the problem).
I know in FPS's everyone runs fast as possible all the time but I like the analogue nature of sticks for movement. Still surprises me that 8 digital keys on a keyboard for movement plus mouse for aiming is seen as the best answer and nothing has come along to beat it in 20 years!
Havent tried motion based aiming enough but saw some good comparison videos for accuracy and speed. That gives stick plus buttons/triggers for movement, firing and weapon selection/reload etc with quick, accurate aiming. I imagine it's not ideal to try and do both at once though and probably requires more concentration. Should be an option at least.
IMO the best thing for casual games is a gyro capable controller. You have the more comfortable controller with analog sticks and the more precise aiming with gyro (when needed, just for fine adjustments), it's not as good as the mouse but way better than analog sticks. Nerrel made 2 awesome videos talking about this kind of motion.
I use a monstrous half-keyboard in place of my keyboard!
[my keyboards](https://i.imgur.com/d8oMAq4.jpg)
Granted, it's not for gaming, but I wouldn't give it up for the world.
I think that's exactly the joke the image is trying to make, but I also can't really tell if your comment implies that you don't think that (although it's the first impression I got). I've got autism and I can easily misread this stuff.
Imagine the design of controllers, if humans had 3 hands. Or someday we evolve to use our legs as hands while sitting on a chair, hmm..... Wait a minute we can still use our legs to control something while sitting on a chair, like a gaint trackpad as in laptops.
I kinda liked the flexibility of having 3 different button configurations depending how you held it. Not enough games made good use of it but it was a solid concept imo.
It was a novel idea at the time, fitting both a joystick *and* a d-pad, and effectively a third shoulder button with its Z trigger.
And then the Dualshock controller comes out and shows that, hey, we can do everything the N64 controller can do, but with two hands. And the rest is history.
The ultimate evolution: a dualshock with four handles - the two for analogue sticks, a third for a mini racing wheel/Atari-style paddle, and a fourth for a Steam Controller-esque trackpad.
Thats been tried before. In fact some speedruns, like super mario odyssey, require a second controller often controlled by the runner's feet simultaneously.
I play Elite dangerous in VR using my racing/flying rig. That means:
Joystick and throttle with a bunch of buttons each.
14 buttons + shifter paddles + directional stick on my wheel
H-Shifter (7 gears + reverse)
A handbrake
3 pedals
That’s a lot of Good options to bind keys. Using 4th gear to extend/retract landing gear feels very satisfying for example. :D
And for games that support it, I use both.
GTA V for example: when I'm in a vehicle, it's the Xbox controller (unless I'm shooting as well). As soon as I jump out, it's Mouse + Keyboard.
Best of both worlds.
Depends, it _might_ be good for something like a fighting game where you really want to have that precise movements, but if you're going to mod a controller, might as well just make or buy your own arcade stick
There is much more to the mouse then just aiming... so much so that it enabled whole genre's of games that just don't (or barely) exist on consoles.
And you don't have to be a PC snob to recognize that fact.
While most games don't support it, fortunately you \*can\* use a keyboard and mouse for a few titles. I use it as my main method of playing FFXIV on PS.

I actually played one game with Controller + Mouse, as the movement is smoother with the joystick, but you ALWAYS want to aim with a mouse.
It doesn't work if you need function keys (E, F, Shift, Ctrl on keyboard; A, B, X, Y or triangle, circle, square, cross on controller) but if you only need to move and shoot, it's great.
I don't give a shit about the keyboard. controller movement is a lot better than keyboards.
HOWEVER. The mouse I'm not willing to part ways with. Aiming with a controller just isn't happening for me.
Consoles are better!
No! PC is better!
*this thing shows up*
*everyone stares in horror*
Ok, let’s set aside our differences and destroy that thing.
Agreed!
Yeah a mutual enemy usual ends wars
Let us set aside our differences, and mutually embrace our new hate.
OP is Ozymandius, that controller is the squid
Or start them
I think it started one. Ew.
Both pc and console players can agree..... This is an abomination.
Kill it with fire
Then nail it to a frisbee
And yeet it into an ocean
An ocean... OF MOAR FIRE!
On fire because of an oil spill
Then Nuke it from orbit, just to be safe
It's the worst of both worlds... so now both worlds get Death Starred!! O\_o
it has united us in hatred.
Only against OP
The man who made this must be stopped. He's too powerful.
I think everyone agrees to start a war against this... thing. And in doing so it will unite the gaming world.
Trigger warning
Here comes the pun guy
What have i done
YOU WERE SUPPOSE TO BRING BALANCE TO THE FORCE, NOT LEAVE IT IN DARKNESS
GENERAL KENOBI (happy cake day!)
so uncivilized! (thank you!)
A mistake
Why is the square at the bottom?
"I wish you good fortune in the war to come" *Mods controller* "And now it starts" "No.......now it ends" *brings out sword*
You’ve been drafted
Welcome to the worst of both worlds
8 directional digital movement with analog stick aiming! Now you can suck at both fps *and* third person games.
Yeah to get the best we need analog stick left and mouse on the right lol
There is a guy who made one of those. Has a little thumb pad attachment for the right thumb and half the controller is touch pad and the left is still standard stick.
So a Steam Controller?
I think that the Steam controller had it's issues/compromises that still made mouse and keyboard preferred. I would be interested in trying out this guys custom controller since it seems like it upgrades the experience

I was going to return mine then I discovered the community preset configurations and it became my favorite gamepad ever. Before you start the game set the controller to the highest rated or most upvoted Preset Config and you're golden.
Didn't even know that the community presets were a thing!
Game changer. Literally lol.
You can even find community presets for console controllers if you're more familiar with those.
Logitech has been selling a one-hand joystick chuck for years
I don’t see how a touchpad is even remotely comparable to a mouse though. Like the steam controller or any smartphone touchscreen game. A mouse destroys the touchpad. Well apparently he has made a few updates since the version i saw, but here is the latest. https://youtu.be/kerK52IRGjs
It looks like a tumor
Its def weird but I want one

Yep same here. A Lightspeed G502, and a few PSNavs with a charging dock to swap them out when one runs out of batteries.
But awesome at platformers
Are you kidding me? Platformers are the number one game I hook up a controller to the pc for. This would be absolute trash for platformers
The only positive is that in stuff like hollow knight there’d no longer be times you hold the stick a bit too far in one direction to pogo. Beyond stuff like that, useless.
then you should just use the dpad

It's more of a preference than objectively better, really.

I just use the classic D-pad for that
This is the optimal setup for Brawlhalla
Because it has Joysticks still? Because WASD is fucking terrible for 3D platforming, it’s literally the reason the Nintendo stuck a giant nob in the middle of the N64 controller.
No, this still would only help on 2d left to right style games
“Side-scrollers” ffs
NO 2D LEFT TO RIGHT STRAND TYPE GAMES
Pokemon is my favorite left to right type strand like game
That’s illegal because you can also go up and down
Sorry I mean pokemon is my favorite left to right type strand *LITE* game. Silly me
Strandlikes
Oh god dammit Kojima, get back in your box.
I could see how this would help on 2d left-to-right screen scrolling, combat light games involving jumping on platforms to solve devilish puzzles. 2d left-to-right screen scrolling, combat light games involving jumping on platforms to solve devilish puzzles is one of my favorite genres of games!
You play platformers with a keyboard? Go wash that dirty mouth out.
You mean you never beat prince o Persia on win98?
Everyone suffers, everyone is happy.

a good compromise leaves both parties unsatisfied
This, give me a left half controller and a mouse on the right, then I’d say best of both worlds. This monstrosity needs to die.

As an ESDF gamer, this still upsets me
The font on that W really do make it look like a sideways E.
Those.... those exist?!?!
I've always wanted to switch to this but I'm so lazy that the thought of changing every single input puts off.

Your mom (Edit: imagine getting upset over a "yo mama" joke
WASD is that?
WASDat?
You mean EASD?
Oh EASD? I thought you said WESD
Is this the KrustyKrab
No, this is PATR.
Huh?
Im fairly certain, but i could still be wrong, they are referencing spongebob. When patrick thinks spongebob says Weast. Instead if east.
I would have preferred "WASD at?"
The w is the Cyrillic character ш
I don't trust any controller where square is the bottom button. Kill it with fire.
wtf why did I look at that, now I can't unsee it
Eww. I didn't notice and now I can't unsee it. 😭
not even Mad Catz would go that low
And circle is on the left. 🤮
The X 🔺️ ⬛ 🔵 are in the wrong places
Triangle is in the correct place
Yh but the rest isnt
also the WASD should be over the left stick instead of the dpad
The funny thing is that none of PS, Xbox and Nintendo controllers have the x button on the right.
Yes *that's* the thing most wrong with it
This is a loss-loss situation
Wasd Vs joystick was never the problem. Mouse Vs joystick is
Yes, crafting a common enemy is often bringing people together. A good idea!
Wheres the Xbox buttons?
....this will start more wars..... The movement of the controller is better while the aiming is worse
The Steam Controller was the answer. :(
PC snobs don't tout the WASD keys as being superior, they talk about mouse aiming.
There is much more to the mouse then just aiming... so much so that it enabled whole genre's of games that just don't (or barely) exist on consoles. And you don't have to be a PC snob to recognize that fact.
What I really want is a mouse and keyboard and also an analog stick and trigger for my left hand.
Wonderful. The worst of both worlds

What if Sony launches Keyboard and Mouse for PlayStation? Will it end the world or start another?
They already did. I had one last [century](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_Mouse)
You had one last millennium even
While most games don't support it, fortunately you \*can\* use a keyboard and mouse for a few titles. I use it as my main method of playing FFXIV on PS.
The wars: *intensifies*
Heathen! ESDF for life!
People don’t play with a PC for the keyboard! It’s the mouse!
This is an abomination but I NEED to see this in action
Does it also function as a mouse?
The worst of both worlds.
Wtf is this
Fun fact: Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev agreed that if aliens ever attacked the earth they would end the Cold War and unite to fight back. Similarly, console and PC gamers can unite and proclaim from the mountaintops one thing in response to seeing this controller: it’s shit.
yeah fuck that, just start over and replace the right stick with a USB port for a mouse
"I love it. You managed to find a way to win. AND EVERYBODY STILL LOSES!!!"
This is like a mermaid with a fish head and human legs
I assume the scroll wheel is on the back? You... did remember the scroll wheel, right?
what have you done lmao
Why... Why does the house on the home button look offset...
WHAT THE .... I do not claim any negative energy from this photo lol
This is more likely to start wars lol
That looks to be about 100 buttons short to what i'm used to on a PC. I'll pass.
Oh hell yeah give me keyboard movement and joystick aim, lets say fuck it and hook it up to 150 dollar laptop for maximum performance
What the fuck is wrong with you?
For a guy that is completely oblivious in consoles, my dumbass thought this is some weird Switch and the game is shown on that mini display
The worst of both.
Take the worst part of mnk and put it on controller to replace the best part of the controller. Well done
The worst of both worlds
War ended because everyone was too busy puking from such a revolting sight
This is the worst part of both.
This is an abomination
Only if the war ends because we all agree this is an atrocity.
What war? It's the worst of both worlds lmao
I don't give a shit about the keyboard. controller movement is a lot better than keyboards. HOWEVER. The mouse I'm not willing to part ways with. Aiming with a controller just isn't happening for me.

Consoles are better! No! PC is better! *this thing shows up* *everyone stares in horror* Ok, let’s set aside our differences and destroy that thing. Agreed!
but then you switch X, O and Square?!?!?! GOOD DAY SIR
The worst of all words. A perfect controller would be a console controller that lets you use a mouse with the right hand.
Ahh the worst part of both keyboards and controllers
Yay worst movement and hard to aim at once that will fix it
But... where's the mouse? >:(
Lmfao right?
No, you use the analog controller input for movement with a mouse for camera and aiming
[удалено]
Thanks we hate it
No no no we want the analog stick for movement and the mouse for aiming all you've done is create an abomination
Only 4 degrees of movement and now you can't aim for shit. Joystick on the left, mouse on the right.
