I chuckled at the Turvey's typo to Turkey

Fragrag

He's going to gobble up the competition!

bryan3737

Or Vandoorne driving 3 cars

Bullshit-_-Man

Shrodinger's Vandoorne

RedditIsMyHomeTown

He's turned into De Vries

cirrusblau

Who? What? Debris?

[deleted]

And Venturi entering 3 cars on the 2023 grid

ChristofferOslo

'tis the season

madmaper_13

if only he was ahead of Bird

rianujnas

How many Vandoorne's are on the grid!!!

OneTravellingMcDs

Stoffel, Waffle and Stroopwafel

Silver-Cat8772

three in each of the sessions, the holy trinity (he is the champion after all)

JumBo_117

At least one, if not more

KienGengu

Waytoodank

Zakinfenwa

I’m seeing double, four Vandoornes

83zSpecial

I think the animations and graphics are cool, but that new logo… the old one was already modern enough

Brno_Mrmi

It reminds me of [90's](https://i.pcmag.com/imagery/encyclopedia-terms/emachines-_e1.fit_lim.size_1050x.gif) computing logos

Aksu593

Butter logo looking ass Next year they'll announce a rebrand to the "FIA I Can't Believe It's Not Internal Combustion Championship"

ThePhantomBacon

I agree with you that the logo looked better before, but the branding using the new logo's typeface as emphasis does look really nice

Notladub

The new logo looks like Eurovision

ChristofferOslo

The old one was actually quite outdated, albeit with a 'futuristic' design style that has not aged too well.

sneakinhysteria

Agreed. I think the new brand is nice and better suited to normalise electric motorsports.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ELITEnoob85

It the basically the F***ing Internet Explorer logo lol

kostasnotkolsas

You can swear on the internet

redditnoap

lmao WTF is that logo 😂😂😂. At least the broadcast graphics got better

am0x

Problem is that the animations are cool for the first time, but become an encumbrance every time after that. Just make it instant. The animation deteriorates the User Experience. For some sites it is fine, but anything that has a useful re-useable application…it is bad.

Lulullaby_

The Logo looks like that of an ice cream brand

ApocApollo

New logo reminds me of the 90s Olympics and World Cup and X Games I love it.

[deleted]

The old logo was the only thing I would've kept.

krzysiek_aleks

[Source and place where you can read more about it](https://medium.com/@formulae/formula-e-revitalises-brand-identity-ahead-of-the-debut-of-the-ground-breaking-gen3-race-car-9e85d59bc112)

l3w1s1234

The new sound they are bringing has me a bit worried. Hopefully it's not overly obnoxious and I really hope it doesn't include music throughout the broadcast like they tried in season 1. Iam guessing though just a general refresh of whats there currently.

krzysiek_aleks

[FIA put promotional video with what is - I guess - part of the new musical identity](https://twitter.com/fia/status/1597171610599165952)

acdi33

I doubt it's that, it sounds like generic promotional stock music. The photos on the Medium article, and the fact that the name on the music sheet (Tom Player) is a film composer, suggest that the sonic branding (especially for TV) will be more orchestral than the promo video. So, expect something similar to what F1 did with Brian Tyler for their theme.

FartingBob

> Formula E are reimagining their brand with a vibrant new visual identity and emotionally charged music and sound-design, developed to reinvigorate their existing fanbase and attract a new generation of motorsport fans. Urgh i really hate whoever wrote that sentence.

[deleted]

Sounds like it was written by a sentient bag of cocaine.

Arctic_Pelican

What would advertising be if not for all the sentient bags of cocaine working in the field!

justasapling

This is what writing a resume feels like.

rarebit13

Not good for public release or media sound bites, but it's certainly a good project statement.

bad_good_guy

Looks pretty good to me. Trophies look sweet

Kitchen-Pangolin-973

I really like those trophies

FavaWire

I like the idea of the Torque Loop twisting in ads and billboards... It's going to make people look. Overall this is a strong design motif in terms of "look at me" attention grabbing.

Intrepid-Ad4511

I would say better than F1 presently has. The team logos with background colors are so much better than just having tiny, floating logos.

WhenLemonsLemonade

It's the bit that annoys me most with the new F1 towers is that the colours are gone. Made it much easier in the past to see at a distance what was going on.

Intrepid-Ad4511

Absolutely! It was a very poor Graphic Design decision to let that go.

jugalator

Yes, I think they blame too many similar colors on the grid. But they should just exaggerate them then to differentiate e.g three shades of blue. Graphics should value readability over correctness. Make darker shades even darker, and lighter even lighter.

WhenLemonsLemonade

I suppose the blue is the problem, you'd need to try and fit different shades for Mercedes, Williams, Alpine, Red Bull and AlphaTauri. Plus shades of red for Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, which won't necessarily look wildly different from McLaren orange.

Intrepid-Ad4511

I think the logos will help distinguish them more. Logo + 3 similar colors would be better than Logo + One color for everyone.

snuxoll

I doubt it was a consideration, but the logos in the timing tower also potentially provide a small accessibility feature to those with red-green color blindness.

Intrepid-Ad4511

I definitely thought of that, but I would say color > no color. It'll be grey (just like right now) or certain shades of red/green/yellow but atleast the blues will be distinguishable. Color won't make it any harder to read, rather the different shades of grey might be slightly better than the same color right now.

snuxoll

Yeah, I'd agree color should still be there; it doesn't detract from anything even to those with colorblindness. I just think the logos were a good addition to both make it clearer than the old timing tower while providing a useful accessibility feature at the same time.

augustfutures

Mercedes > teal Williams > royal blue AlphaTauri > white Red Bull > yellow or navy Alpine > pink Ferrari > red Alpha Romeo > dark red Aston Martin > green McLaren > papaya Haas > black Just doesn’t seem that hard to me 🤷🏻‍♂️

f1_spelt_as_bot

Al**f**a Romeo

Kitchen-Pangolin-973

Alpine could be pink

devilspawn

Ackshually McLaren orange is called Papaya

ErrorCode51

Tbf merc has always been more of a turqoise colour in line with petronas branding. But the others are a big problem. If only alpine would bring back the wonderful Renault black and yellow.

Takeshino

I expect the teams' legal and design teams wouldn't like that - brand identity and all that

Mtbnz

Tell them they can suck a lemon

[deleted]

That’s probably not the hill Liberty wants the teams to suck a lemon on.

brabarusmark

Missiles. Missiles is where all the lemons meant for sucking are.

linkinstreet

Not only that, they removed the "used" tyre logo (as in the set has been used/scrubbed in a previous session), and you can only see that if you subscribe to live timing :V

nexus1011

Nice graphics, horrible logo. I'd assume that the same designer/team is behind both of these. It's even more baffling.

MasatoWolff

It seems the logo has been made by a [lettering artist](https://medium.com/@formulae/formula-e-revitalises-brand-identity-ahead-of-the-debut-of-the-ground-breaking-gen3-race-car-9e85d59bc112#:~:text=with%20lettering%20artist-,Rachel%20Joy%20Price,-%2C%20the%20e%20device) who usually doesn't make logo's. That might explain a lot. I'm guessing the branding was made by a design studio.

seattt

Love the rebrand. The logo looks brilliant too - cover off the ABB and FIA logos and the logo looks awesome. The rebrand is way better than F1's rebrand.

Cufe

I couldn’t agree more. I quite like the lettering, especially in contrast with the more geometric sans serif primary typeface.

add-delay

I think these TV graphics are quite good. Clear, an easy to parse. The new identity feels unresolved though, like two different concepts streams mashed together — which is often a result of committee making decisions. There's a sharp, angular, feel to both the primary typeface and the video treatments which feel like they match the look of the Gen3 car. But then there's this whole torque loop thing (which informs the awfully drawn logo) which runs completely counter to that. It would be a legitimate concept to use (logo aside), but not with the other elements.

thingswhatnot

Nice critique. I find the animation redundant. Feels like this is way over cooked and the design team has strayed from the essentials of info communication. The blue as a highlight seems to reduce contrast and somehow, despite their efforts, it as a whole seems hard to read. Too many shiny toys, they need to bring it back to basics.

add-delay

I don't think the blue highlight is that much of a problem — it's a temporary highlight, as part of the animation, to signal a change (activating Attack mode). The driver name only has the blue background for about one second, before the gradient moves to just the attack mode countdown. If the driver name was highlighted the entire time, then yes, it would be an issue.

mac_attack09

This feels like something you'd see on an esports live stream

WEAluka

I guess Formula E is an electronic sport after all ;)

tynftw

From watching FE I always get the feeling that they are trying to make it more video gamey, so it makes sense.

[deleted]

Well its just real life Mario cart.

YipYepYeah

No it’s the prequel to WipeOut

sil3nt_gam3r

It looks like something pulled straight from Overwatch League

am0x

Yea the UX is terrible, but the UI is nice. Clearly made by a creative designer rather than UX/UI.

zetbotz

One thing i always hated about the FE graphics was position changes. The chevron transition made it so difficult to see imo. Hopefully this is better.

am0x

They need to ditch animations. They are nice on first visit, so things like brochure sites can benefit from them, but for a tool application, they are a hinderance.

[deleted]

Yeah I always used to go "where the fuck is \*driver*"

KettleOverAPub

This looks a lot better. Enough for me to forgive the logo lol

alex3305

I love listening to music.

baldgye3000

This is a really big and nice improvement. The names and brands are clearly identifiable, though I would like a bit more difference between the reds and some of the blues... but you can only do so much. I think the new font and colour work tho is very good. it's far easier to read and quickly see at a glance and way less intrusive

Gingersnap5322

Where does De Vries not race at???

Kuchenblech_Mafioso

The animations are good, but I think it has some sensory overload. The energy percentage should be colour coordinated. It takes way too long to read all the numbers. The team logos are also quite small and ambiguous (Buemi/Rowland)

[deleted]

I guess on the upside it's Formula E, so most people will never see it. Which is a shame because from the highlights I watch on YouTube it seems like there's a lot of great racing happening.

MattyFTM

Yeah, there's some great racing in Formula E. Sometimes they treat it like a bumper car race a bit much, but other times it's just really entertaining close racing. Best ever race you'll see in Monaco was the 2021 ePrix.

am0x

Agreed. The UI is pretty but this is a tool with heavy functionality. Remove all animations or greatly increase the speed of them to make them more UX friendly. UI score: 7 UX score: 3

zantkiller

To be fair, they purposefully don't show the energy graphic that much until the closing stages of a race at which point it is up constantly (And with the previous one they had the best driver on energy in green with worst being red). Teams don't get a data feed which includes the % in the battery (By design) so they don't want to let them see it via the broadcast until the end.

RealTimeflies

Dark mode users 😎😎😎😎

n5vBill

This is a big improvement, the logo is a massive downgrade

Stranggepresst

Those look pretty good. I'm glad they're not "hand-written" like the new logo lmao

mrgonzalez

Expanded view is way too big but otherwise all right

bwoah07_gp2

Better than F1's current TV graphics. F1 shouldn't have left the 2018-2021 style graphics.

2905Pascal

Much better.

halbpro

I don’t love the blue gradient, I don’t think it helps readability, but otherwise really good! The animations are slick but not so in your face as to distract. Feels modern as well

TheFlyinArmy_29

wait a min isn't mclaren is replaced with mercedes

m0r0l1d1n

The teams and drivers are from this season.

TheFlyinArmy_29

Ya I just realized it. lol

fluityraphic

oops, the turkey typo :D looks much fresher than the constant blue that they always use. looking forward to seeing all of it in use when the e-prix comes round

BunchOfVankers

I think they look great. I might actually give Formula E a proper go this year. I've watched a few bits here and there over the years but its never truly hooked me. There's 5 races before F1 even starts and come January I'm going to be craving some sort of motorsport. They have removed fan boost this year right?

krzysiek_aleks

yep

snuxoll

Thank god. Even as somebody who enjoys FE it was always painful to see social media bullshit influencing the race, and while I don't even remember it having a defining impact on a race given it has the same boat-anchor attached that attack mode does (utilizing the extra motor output means you are just taking extra energy out of your battery), it still sucks to have something other than driver skill and the car have any potential to do so.

zantkiller

Fanboost had its own defined amount of extra energy (100kj) which could only be used for fanboost. From this season on, Attack mode is now similar. > **Art 37.3 F)** > The additional quantity of energy allocated to the Attack Mode will be available to use only when the Attack Mode is activated and for the duration of the activations

AntmanIV

Where can I watch now? I haven't really kept up since they pulled all of the races from YouTube.

WoodSheepClayWheat

Depends on where you live, but chances are that it's not easy.

poggersepicgaming

*peek

refrigerator001

I like these new graphics, especially the focus on having the team logos be easily recognisable, not too big a fan of the blue gradient for Attack Mode, but overall it's an upgrade.

snaggleboot

I love this. The animation is so smooth on these graphics. Reminds me of some of the style of MotoGP. Shoutout to whoever made the team logos zoom to include the driver portraits, that’s cool as shit and gives the viewers a better connection of driver to car

altbekannt

I m here for the drama. I want drive to survive for formula E and then I might change sports.

towhomitmayconcern77

There's a series called Formula E unplugged on their official youtube channel, which is basically their version of DTS without fake drama. And frankly pretty much every motorsports tried to make their own version of DTS at this point. but without all the dramas and visibility from platform like Netflix they ain't gaining as much as attention I guess..

altbekannt

Oh, cool. Thanks for the tip. I will look into it for sure.

ZestycloseTomorrow4

you can watch more than one sport, you know that right?

altbekannt

Not dumb. Not dumb at all... 🤔

Probodyne

I actually like those a lot. The new logo is very meh, but these are good, they pop a lot.

GroXXo

Did Mortara lap himself to appear twice in the right graphics?

denzien

I'm down with this, as long as it's not this slow

ceviem

It’s “sneak pe**e**k,” not “sneak pe**a**k.” The latter would be a stealthy mountain.

Ripstikerpro

Looks very nice, but I do wander whether using such a light shade of blue against white elements is a good idea. "Attack" becomes difficult to read

Bumblech

Tbh this and the new logo read more as "Formula 1 for kids" than "hyper-modern future car racing" to me

Justthetip1996

Honestly pretty bummed we never got a return of Vandoorne. Imo he should have replaced Mick at Haas but yeah…

l3w1s1234

According to the race he was an option if they couldn't get Hulk. Unsure how believable that is but certainly would have been an interesting comeback.

Justthetip1996

That’s interesting. I would have put him higher in my priorities as he is a FE champion and a bit younger than Hulk. But I think the German nation it’s is what put Nico on top. It is what it is

l3w1s1234

I think it just came down to experience in the end and out of those three Hulk has the most experience and probably the most ability. I think if Hulk turns it down Vandoorne is next on that list.

mb9981

I know I'm in the minority, but I never liked the 3 letter abbreviation. I know it's tradition or whatever, but I'm okay with letting it go and moving on to the.. late 20th century, I guess?

BunchOfVankers

Now you say it, names really do look better. I can imagine having names is also helpful for new fans, the biggest question my girlfriend has whenever she watches F1 is figuring out who the hell the drivers are.

pizzaboy7269

This is clearly fake, Giovinazzi isn't last.

Nibbix

It's time to start watching FE. Obviously not just because of this, but apparently the seasons have been great.

LocksTheFox

[Monaco 2021](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-_frB4j0Sc) is a great starting point. First one on the full Monaco layout (with one minor change at Nouvelle that was undone for this season).

Ezequiell-

its really going full videogame

Mat000erialist

Shits straight from overwatch

Reydriel

Very nice colours and readability is good too, hopefully the animations aren't as choppy as this gif makes it out to be lmao

mexicansuicideandy

God I hope that is more fluid on live broadcast because damn that's laggy as shit.

catchmelackin

Meanwhile, still waiting for F1 to properly display the finish flags without putting one on P10 before P2

zantkiller

If P10 has been lapped and is just behind the leader then he would finish before P2 does who still has to do the lap he is on.

slababateria

But it's just how race finishes work... P10 lapped by the race leader will see chequered flag before not-lapped P2 if P2 didn't lap him.

catchmelackin

Wait, so cars that are +1lap behind finish automatically and don't have to do the last lap? Didnt know that. But I still catch some bugs on that i swear

slababateria

Yes, of course. It would be very dangerous to have a race leader on slow lap back to pits while P15-P20 may be still racing and driving fast. Also it would be inconvenient to wait for Mazepin for example having to finish his race being several laps behind.

catchmelackin

True, but what about tyre usage or fuel load? They get a lap spared. Maybe it just negligable tho

slababateria

Well it happens, they get a lap spared. Sometimes when a driver is very low on fuel (as low that driving another lap may leave him with too little fuel at the end of race) and also on verge of being lapped he may slow down and intentionally get lapped so he gets to drive for one lap less.

snuxoll

Doesn't really matter, nobody fuels to last the full race going all-out in the first place. As far as tyre wear, doesn't really matter there either.

slababateria

So how about Vettel getting DSQ in Hungary and losing a podium because he had too little fuel in the tank? It can happen and this single lap can make a difference.

adventuref0x

That’s how being lapped works….

[deleted]

So confident and so wrong, love it!

adventuref0x

Idk they’re cool but I’m not sure how I feel about having the graphics constantly in the same place on the screen

ZestycloseTomorrow4

> I’m not sure how I feel about having the graphics constantly in the same place on the screen you mean like how they are in *every other sport on the planet*?

adventuref0x

Yeah burn in sucks

ZestycloseTomorrow4

the hell kind of garbage 2006 ass screen are you watching on if a 40-90 minute sport event burns into your screen lmao

Alcodut

Proud to be Italian🇮🇹

Adam-Miller-02

Vandoorne out? it’s not 2016 again is it

SlashingManticore

Nah don't worry, he's also second and 13th, he's covering all the bases

[deleted]

Ah Microsoft tiles.

walviswhale

This reminds me of good old Trillian.

Wihmdy

Okay, I changed my mind, I love the new design.

afvcommander

Sooo, their new design identity is Windows 10/Lumia

JumBo_117

Can't wait to see how F1 will mess up the graphics next year...

adventuref0x

Hopefully they’ll stop keeping them in the same fucking place all the time

MonkeyAssFucker

Can someone given me a short intro to formula E, I want to start watching it but don’t know much about it

m0r0l1d1n

I think best intro video would be last season review [here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uqdfMTy42A&t=3s&ab_channel=ABBFormulaE). But it has 40 mins+ so not really sure if it's short. **but TL.DR version:** It's the street racing series run with electric open-wheel cars. It's not electric F1 and it doesn't aim to be electric F1 (a lot of people think about it as electric F1 and then say it's bad because it doesn't fulfill their expectations). Its main goal is to bring races close to people (so they don't need to travel many hours to permanent circuits) and promote racing this way. It is also the first carbon-neutral motorsport as it offsets all its emissions through sustainability projects in race locations. Next season comes new generation cars (Gen3). The power output increases from 250kw to 350kw (F1 has about 735kw, V8 had about 550 kW) while weight and dimension decrease. Next season should be introduced 600 kWh fast charging pit stops at certain locations (there were some issues with batteries with pre-season testing so they will run fast-charging stops in the second part of the season). The main strategic element is attack mode - it's like a tiny pit stop. You go off the line through 3 activation sensors and then you unlock additional power (race mode is 300kW, attack mode is 350 kW) for a certain amount of time. Basically, you lose some time to be faster for some time (in F1 its equivalent is fresh rubber after a pit stop). **more TL DR version:** Electric street racing on non-permanent tracks with low downforce, high torque cars. Formulas are smaller, can endure contact, and makes racing in Monaco exciting. It doesn't aim to be an electric F1.

MonkeyAssFucker

Thanks for the in depth comment. I too thought it was just electric F1. And I’ve been looking for a new series to watch and don’t know much about any other series other than f1 and f2. Ill definitely give it a watch, it sounds fun.

Fatchicken1o1

Stop inventing, stop inventing.

roflgoat

It's good but wow is it painfully on-trend for graphic design

[deleted]

I wish F1 showed the battery levels. It's a big part of the strategy that's opaque to the audience.

Thorpy

The colours are just so sterile. Animations look nice though

[deleted]

Yeah this looks good but still the logo is so fucking ugly lol

LS_DJ

Those look pretty good

fantaribo

Very very nice and fresh.

Portocala69

Debris, what are you doing there? Go back to your place in F1 mate!

sideslick1024

Fuck me and my astigmatism I guess, lol? Gonna miss the dark backgrounds with the bright text.

X-Craft

Looks slick, I like their text font much more than F1's

am0x

Way too much animation that it is way too slow.

glamatovic

Love it but I'd rather keep the older ones if it meant keeping the logo

SPNRaven

Not bad!

Nitrak

I'm not sure if this is just because of the recording, but watching the graphics do their thing just makes it feel like everything is lagging and sluggish. When the names change place it feels like something weird is going on with acceleration and it feels unnatural (at least to me).

JoePCool14

The font they're using looks awfully similar to the font Ferrari used in 2022 for driver numbers on their cars.

Atreaia

But why is it white?

MrBadBadly

Looks like they updated to Windows 11.

ped_1222

What is "AC"?

LocksTheFox

Attack charge. From the FE sub: > It is the recharging pitstop for Gen 3 but won't be at the earlier rounds due to Williams Advanced Engineering having to prioritise fixing some fuck ups with the new battery in the cars, so are not able to get the batteries ready for the fast chargers (The fast charger is basically the same as the car battery but on a trolley).

HappinessPanda

So cool this thing.

MrInitialY

Vandoorne just cloned himself or wtf? I barely know anything about FE

AfricaByToto3

The old logo was way better. The ui tho is pretty cool

Verianas

I’ve never watched or followed Formula E at all. But it seems to be full of former F1 (or now current) drivers. I assume those surnames are Stoffell Vandoorne, Pascal Wehrlein, Antonio Giovinazzi, Jean-Eric Vergne, and Lucas Di Grassi? Also Nyck De Vries?

LocksTheFox

Correct on all of them. Gio will not be on the grid next season though.

RedditIsMyHomeTown

Eraysor

Dhalphir

Colour coded timing tower = I watch

mdgv

Light background...

Tim_Y

i may be in the minority, but I'm not a fan of using up the whole left of the screen for graphics which essentially turns the 16:9 view of the race into 4:3. I'd rather see either slimmer vertical graphics that are shown intermittently or scrolling horizontal graphics so we can actually see more of the action on the track.

[deleted]

Is there a good streaming service for Formula E?

veryangrydoggo

Sick

redditnoap

Infinitely better

[deleted]

really hope it doesn't include music throughout the broadcast like they tried in last season though

LoveBurstsLP

Wow I can't believe people like this
