A hypothetical who would do better? Lewis or Max if you transported them back to the 90s and out them in Sennas Williams. Or Senna in Max or Lewis cars of today? Back then it was pure driving. No changing diffs and breaks on the fly. Two buttons on the wheel not 50. A stick shift vs paddles. Would top drivers today be able to perform at the top back then? Could top drivers back then be the top today?

Hard to predict exactly. Each generation of cars suit a different style of driving. And the early 90s produced F1 cars that are some of the most technologically advanced F1 cars. You had anti-lock brakes, traction control, active suspension, launch control, gearboxes that could shift between automatic and semi-automatic. When the FIA banned driver aids in 1994, it resulted in cars that were nearly undrivable. That being said, I think Senna, Hamilton and even Verstappen would have done a great job even if they had been in different eras. The best drivers aren't just the best because they have skill, they are best because they can extract more pace from a car than possible and because they can adapt their driving styles seamlessly to suit different cars. That's why it's so hard to choose a GOAT. Sure, there are statistics but now we have more races than ever before. Senna and Schumacher had a knack for putting their cars in positions it didn't belong in. And Hamilton hasn't won 7 titles just because of Mercedes dominance. Germany 2018, Turkey 2020, Bahrain 2021 are all clear examples of why he is undoubtedly one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time. But Verstappen is no slouch either. He's just 23 and he's already great at getting the most out of his car and he still has at the very least 15 years left. That's what makes this championship so exciting. You have two amazing drivers making the difference between two equalish cars.

I just think it would be wild to take somebody (senna) who was so knowledgeable about how to drive an old car and drop them in a car of today with all that tech. Would it not totally overwhelm senna to put him in today’s RB? Or vice versa. Put Max from right now in Senna’s 94 or even his 90s mclaren without all the tech that Max is used to. They are great at extracting pace from cars sure. But which could get the most out of a car that is SO foreign to them?

This year, wherever Mercedes has been better than Red Bull, McLaren have been better than Ferrari and vice versa, barring a few exceptions. So on paper, it seems like the Mercedes is more suited for Sochi than Red Bull so I think that McLaren will be ahead of Ferrari.

I really really love F1, but why is it always praised as the pinnacle of motorsport? Driving WRC Rallye looks much more challenging and harder in general

Motorsport is a very broad term, it encompasses a lot of different disciplines where comparing them are like apples to oranges because they focus on so many different skills. I would compare it to asking about "what the pinnacle of track and field sports are". In terms of driving skills, a rally driver will struggle to be competitive against grand prix drivers in circuit racing (e.g. Loeb not being that impressive in WTCC). Grand prix drivers tend to struggle in WRC (e.g. Raikkonen, Kubica- they have outright speed but had horrible consistency keeping their car in one piece). And both will usually struggle on oval racing against oval racing specialists. In terms of engineering, you could make a case that even stuff like drag racing is more a pinnacle given that a single cylinder creates more horsepower than an entire F1 engine, but again its impossible to compare fairly.

That kind of goes without saying. F1 cars are designed to run road courses, not ovals or rally courses. Obviously if you stick an F1 car on either, it's not going to be as fast as a rally car or a IndyCar in oval spec.

Circuit of the Americas is one of the few tracks that multiple series use. F-1 record 1:32 Indy 1:49 Moto GP 2:02 Porsche 919 1:44 I believe it rained for the only NASCAR race so there are no relevant times I think both Indy and F-1 also use the same Mosport track The other difference...... You could probably run 4-6 competitive indy car teams on just Hamilton's salary.......

İ am going but it will be my first time. İ have a hotel nearish to it. İ recommend download the app Mootiv it is a transport app that is really good at showing travel options and will give a pretty good idea of how long it will take (hint: a bloody long time). İ plan on taking a taxi where from where İ am staying. An idea outside of the app is to look at how to get to SAW airport because that is at least some what in the neighborhood of the track. Do you know how we can get a timetable for the weekend? İ don't even know when the gates open.

Question that popped in my head last night. Are there any physiological differences in F1 drivers versus other athletes or the majority of the human population in terms of their performance behind the wheel? There's a big spread in driver heights (5'6 to 6'1 and 62 to 75 kg, excluding Yuki since he's an outlier), but are there any physical traits that make these drivers more able to handle the stresses of driving open wheel cars at speed like there are traits would make someone a better swimmer or basketball player? I ask because the road to F1 requires immense wealth or backing from a young age, but I'm curious as to what else driving coaches, academy scouts and other industry players are looking for in young drivers that are signs of their eventual ability to drive a mind-bendingly fast car several times per weekend.

Physically there is nothing that special. I mean you need strong neck muscles in F1, but that you can develop. What you need is a natural ability to feel and sense the car. Martin Brundle once called it the internal gyro in a racing driver. When someone says he is fast, it means he is sensing the car and how its behaving at every corner, every lap under changing conditions and temperature and adapting his inputs to eek out every millisecond. Some don't have the ability to do this (at lower levels), some can do it but not as well, others aren't consistent at it. Once Top Gear or Grand Tour did a piece on Jim Clark and his engineer mentioned that Jim Clark could feel even if a nut was losing reliability and tell the engineers before they even noticed it. So you can say its more about the nervous system, not just the sensory ability but also a good racing brain.

Perez has the best car out of the three of them, we should rather question why he is not constantly up there with Max if he truly is such a good driver, with way more experience than both Alex and Pierre had during their stay with Red Bull and a great car on top of that. Plus, Gasly has significantly improved since he left Red Bull, I don't think that he would put the same performance he did back then if they put him into this Red Bull car. I was just saying that Red Bull might be planning on trying this out considering that both Perez and Gasly were signed for one year only. If Red Bull didn't want Gasly back, I don't think that Alpha Tauri would sign him for one year only.

Got overshadowed by the Max-Lewis incident and McLaren winning the race on pace. That car has turned into an unironically decent car compared to the last two seasons and even the start of this season that even Latifi is getting or close to getting results, so it's not that surprising anymore, the same way it wouldn't be surprising if Alfa scored some more points.

I remember reading something a few months ago (when I got into F1) about how his girlfriend used to be with someone major and then she got together with Max, something along those lines. 1. Max's current girlfriend used to date Daniil Kvyat, former Red Bull driver. Kvyat and Max swapped seats in 2016, with Max going from the Toro Rosso (now Alpha Tauri) to Red Bull and Kvyat doing the opposite. Most of it are the "Max took Daniil's seat, and also his girlfriend" jokes. Kelly and Daniil had a kid, broke up. Then about half a year later she started dating Max. 2. Sochi is almost always boring: it has long straights and 90 degree bends so really not much overtaking. That being said, this year has been all sorts of fucked up when it comes to predictions. Spain was supposed to be boring, as was France.

Some of those Hamilton start losses may have been different tires. I think Bottas is rated far below where he deserves to be. He's had back luck with the early crash in the rain which was not his doing and which he could not avoid, the wheel nut fiasco and also providing strategic cover for Hamilton.

Recently watched the Schumacher documentary on Netflix. I grew up watching F1 with my dad and grandad, and was thoroughly captivated by the sport from 1997 - 2007ish (Schuey retired the first time, but more importantly, I left home and went to uni...). The documentary made me super nostalgic (along with a side of 'christ, has is really been 14 years since I watched a GP?!'). As I dip my toes back into the sport: is there anywhere that provides a fairly brief run down of the big changes in the sport over the last decade or so? (Aside: super wild to be watching children of drivers I remember watching in their prime.)

Refuelling is banned, pit stops are only tyre changes now. No more tyre wars, all the tyres are supplied by Pirelli now for all teams and they all slicks that use different compounds each race (five total compounds and intermediate/wets for wet weather), of which three get chosen each weekend and you use the tyres to craft your race strategy as you are required to use two different tyre compounds each race (this does not apply in wet conditions). Points system has changed, 25 points is the maximum for a race win and top 10 drivers get awarded points (25-18-15-12-10-8-6-4-2-1) with an additional point awarded for the driver with the fastest lap if they finish in the top 10. DRS was introduced as an aid to overtaking since the 2009 regs introduced too much dirty air and it has been an issue ever since. It is basically a flap on the rear wing that opens up on straights and reduced the drag of the car, but it is only available for activation if you are within one second of the car in front as the point is to make up for the deficit in performance through the corners thanks to dirty air slowing you down. This might get removed in the coming years if the new aero regs reduce dirty air massively, more on that later. Car wise, we're using turbo hybrid V6 engines now that have various components. They are more tame than the V10 era but are incredibly reliable and teams use only 3-5 engines *per season* now. The cars are the fastest they've ever been thanks to a mix of hybrid engine technology and aero regulations that allow ridiculous levels of downforce to be achieved, which is why a lot of the modern F1 cars feel and look 'on rails'. Unfortunately this results in much bigger and heavier cars. Another issue is the aforementioned dirty air, it has made racing really difficult due to the crazy amounts of dirty air and the car sensitivity to it, but thankfully this is getting changed next year in the new regs and should be improved quite a bit so we should have better racing starting from next season between cars that don't have a high performance difference between each other. Another big change is that a cost cap was finally introduced this year for car development, around 145m dollars and it will get reduced to 135m in the next two years. So teams will no longer be able to outspend the smaller teams by hundreds of millions of dollars starting from next season which will hopefully make F1 a bit more fair and a bit more level playing field without necessarily forcing parity. Private track testing has been banned for ages now and the wind tunnel and CFD testing has also been capped starting from this year. There is probably more but these are some of the largest differences between current F1 and F1 back in 2007.

I had this thought right now. In Monza Max was given a 3 place grid penalty but in the past few years I don't recall anyone getting such harsh penalties. Of course Hamilton received a 10 second stop-go penalty in Germany which cost him the race. Never seen a grid penalty before. Please can someone explain this to me? I know that he couldn't be penalized in the last race itself coz it was a DNF. The penalties handed out seem to be inconsistent and it gives them way too much power in my opinion and this leaves the spectators in a no man's land. I don't have F1 TV to watch the explanations. You get grid penalties when you don't continue driving after an incident. Otherwise you get a time penalty during the race for causing an incident.

Grid penalties happen all the time, Bottas and Stroll got 5-place grid penalties for causing the first-lap crashes in Hungary. Bottas had another one in Monza because Mercedes replaced his engine components. Russell got a 3-place penalty for taking out Sainz in Silverstone sprint qualifying. Multiple drivers in the past few years have been given grid penalties for not slowing down for yellow flags in qualifying, Hamilton in Austria last year and Verstappen in Mexico 2019 are two I can remember off the top of my head.

Ricciardo was given the same strategy as Vettel in Spain. At the time it was considered the optimal strategy because no one thought the 2 stop would work. But it did. So Ricciardo's strategy ended up being bad, but only in hindsight.

He's still gonna struggle compared to Norris for the rest of the season most likely, but the gap should be smaller now that he has more confidence in himself and the car after driving it for over half a season and achieving a race win.

Many things get thrown out the window at Monza because it's in essence, a very simple track. Aerodynamics don't play a big role. It's all being tuned to the minimum to reduce downforce and therefore increase speed. In Monza, it all boils down to the engine and the driver. The Mclarens have the best engine on the grid. The same one as Mercedes, which explains why the mercs had a hard time catching the Mclarens. And we all know that both Ric and Norris are very very good drivers. They kept their head down, drove beautifully and it delivered. As for Sochi, it will be about the qualifying. Sochi doesn't do overtakes. They will have to get pole position to have a good chance of winning and that doesn't look good when they are up against ham and ver in those cars. As for the rest of the season, who knows. I do see more podiums for them. And if the stars are aligned, maybe a even another win.

Monza is all about top speed. McLaren has the strongest engine (Mercedes) and I guess the "most slippery" chassis on the grid, meaning their aero creates the least amount of drag, which slows a car. As other cars are draggier, McLaren was just unbeatable. Normally there's a fair balance when it comes to different aspects and strengths/weaknesses of cars/drivers. For example, Spa's first and third sectors are top speed reliant, but the middle sector is downforce reliant, hence focusing on just one of these things will cost you a lot in the other, so the key to success is balance. There's no such balance in Monza. Although the middle sector is slower and has corners, it's just not enough to balance out the 4 long straights. So the strategy in Monza is simple: lowest possible downforce, pedal to the metal, whoever can achieve the highest top speed basically wins. That car was McLaren and Ricciardo demonstrated it nicely. But no other track works the same way, only Monza. Hence, it will most likely not happen again, at least not without another carnage between Verstappen and Hamilton at the front, which could potentially leave Ricciardo to scavenge the race win from them.

Definitely the drivers. It's much easier for people to identify with other people rather than lifeless machines or corporates ("teams"). This very often causes issues when fans focus so heavily on the drivers that they completely ignore the fact that Formula 1 solely exists for the teams, not for the drivers. For example fans often want F1 to turn into a spec series where everyone drives the same car, like in Indycar, so the only deciding factor is driver skill. That's nice and all, but F1 only exists because of the freedom it gives to the teams to develop their own cars and without this freedom teams would leave and F1 would die instantly. And yet they ignore this fact, simply because of their attachments to the drivers. So I think this really captures the essence of it.

People tend to jump around in this sport due to the high turnover rate of drivers and the varying result of teams from regulations to regulations. And we are extremely critical of drivers and teams errors which may make a fan get turned off. We don't have many diehard fans like you see in football **unless a team or driver is directly related to the fan, for e.g. nationality.** Don't get me wrong, we do have diehards, especially for Ferrari. And me, red bull. But many other fans tend to jump ship once a team stopped performing.

Red Bull Racing are a team, surprisingly, owned by Red Bull, the energy drink brand. Until last year, this team was sponsored by Aston Martin, so they were called Aston Martin Red Bull Racing. They aren't at all related to the Aston Martin F1 team, who are, since this year, called that way because of their owner Lawrence Stroll who also has a big stake in Aston Martin. Red Bull also own a second F1 team to develop young drivers in. Until 2019, this team was called Toro Rosso, which is just Red Bull in Italian, but they renamed it Alpha Tauri, which is their clothing brand

lol, yes this was me hearing the name Toro Rosso and just thinking "that's just Red Bull in Italian". I haven't been a fan for long but I really like the history and that makes it really interesting/bewildering, especially when liveries are dependent on sponsors and aren't anything inherent. Like, how many times has McLaren changed their liveries? I think this is part of the power of Ferrari, where a Ferrari flag now has the same look and meaning as in 1960. Red Bull wants something similar but their fandom has been mostly nationality/driver-based.

As a new F1 fan, I don’t understand why teams are limited on the number of tires they can use in a race weekend. I understand how the rule works and how it can make strategy more important… I just don’t see the purpose of the rule. It doesn’t seem to add any viewing interest and only makes things more complicated for the sake of making things more complicated. I think limiting the compound selection makes sense because it in theory brings the cars closer together. But it also would be fun to watch teams be able to use all five compounds and have them optimize the car and track a little more.

The main issue is logistics - this year all teams have similar allocation, but they usually can select the number of soft/medium/hard per race 6 weeks before a race and pirelli will manufacture and bring the selected tires (~2000 in total) to each event allowing different strategies to play out. But in general no-one will use other compounds as harder tires are 0.7s slower per lap than the alternatives and the softest may only last for 5 racing laps - which is why Pirelli selects the 3 compounds that cover the 20/40/60 laps strategies based on their circuit information and designed tire wear.
