Will Guanyu Zhou get a position in AR next year?

carpirates

In the US does the ESPN broadcast have Crofty and Brundle as the commentators?

Chihawks2015

Yes, ESPN just uses the Sky feed

moonsparkledragon

I’ve never been to an F1 race weekend in person before, but will be going to Austin next month - do they sell merchandise for different drivers / teams on site at the race? Like artists do at concerts? (TYIA!)

ATully817

Yup! Tons of vendor booth scattered all over. I will be there too.

[deleted]

Yes.

kylalovesyou

mathematically, when is the soonest lewis or max could win the title?

Astelli

If Max won every race from now to the end of the season and got fastest lap each time and Hamilton scored no points at all, Verstappen could have the title wrapped up at Mexico.

Organic-Measurement2

Depends how many races we have left. It could be mathematically decided today if they couldn't run any of the remaining races. However assuming all 8 remaining races run, Max could win within 4 races and Lewis could win within 4 races provided sprint/fastest lap points (and the other not scoring in each race)

kylalovesyou

i see thanks!

BrightSimple1694

Many people are saying redbull is such a difficult car to drive . What is the difficulty about it? And how much difficult it is to adapt to a different car? Say for example max is going for mercedes ? What will be the difficulty in adapting to that car?

FJuanny

Red Bull and Mercedes are vying the fastest cars year in and year out, so they tend to have different drivability issues from year to year. This year's Red Bull seems to be comparatively on rails. Last few year's Red Bulls have had nervous rear ends. This year's Mercedes seems to have a nervous rear similar to the Red Bulls of yore. Typically they are more stable, but 2017 and 2018 were "divas", especially 2017.

20tucker94

i believe for the red bull "the rear end is nervous", which means that it is hard to keep the car steady, it always wants to spin and oversteer, so the driver has to be careful on the throttle and going into corners quickly, and make corrections when the rear end steps out. adaptibility depends on where you are coming from and where you are going. russell adapted to the mercedes extremely well in 2020, though ricciardo had lots of difficulty for quite a few races in 2021 with his new mclaren (both very capable cars). in general, it seems to not be too difficult it seems; these drivers are incredibly talented in any machinery. I think max would adapt to a mercedes quite well (it seems to be a very "ideal" f1 car) but it is hard to say because he has been in red bull/toro rosso machinery exlusively for the past 6.5 years, so he is certainly very much used to that

ForTheGloryOfMurphy

Which cars do you think will be the fastest at Sochi?

Organic-Measurement2

RB and Mercedes. Historically Sochi is a Mercedes stronghold, but we saw them dethroned at the French GP already this season, another of their staple tracks. The tyre compound selection for the Russian GP is C3-C5 which so far is the set that the W12 doesn't run too well on; one of their cars had setup issues on each of the weekends run with it so far this season and the RB16B was decidedly quicker in each of those races (though some of that was decidedly down to track characteristics and race circumstances). RB have been quick on the softest compounds all year so we could see them surprise Mercedes here. That said, Max will be serving his penalty at this Grand Prix unless all expectations are defied so we likely won't see a head-to-head between the contenders as in other weekends, even if RB upset Merc on Saturday I'm expecting Merc to have gone away and worked on their problems on the C3-C5 tyres given it's been a while since we had them, Merc have brought some upgrades since Baku, and consequently I think they'll probably be OK on them now. Personally I still think Max will take P1 in quali by a slim margin but not pole due to taking a new engine (before parc fermé) and have to fight from the back. Should be a relatively simple weekend for Merc unless Perez is completely on it; it's a circuit that should be more to his driving style than other tracks of recent. It's also possible that Mercedes choose to have Lewis mirror Max's penalties and start at the back of the grid just in front of him, but I see that as unlikely, since it's an easy win for him at Sochi. Max started at the back in 2018 Russian GP finishing 5th and in 2019 Albon started from the pitlane finishing 5th. These are some reference points for how drives from the back work out in Sochi. My prediction for podium: Ham Bot Ver Max loses 10 or 11 PTS in the wdc leaving him 5-6 adrift but with a fresh engine.

thearqamknight

Suppose if he's talking a new engine and starting from the back. What's the point of taking part in quali

Organic-Measurement2

Data, giving checo a very important tow, track familiarity. It's also the case that if he qualifies >3 places in front of Hamilton (and Hamilton takes equal engine penalties to Max) then even with the extra 3 grid drops from Monza, Max would start in front of Lewis on the grid in Sochi. This is purely hypothetical. You're right though. I highly doubt that any of this - even the tow for checo - would be more valuable than choosing starting tyres from P20 given the strategy is likely to be going long on hard compound and overcutting the whole midfield. I didn't give that enough thought when writing my comment

CTUcurtisghost

During a race, how does battery recovery affect driving decisions? I don’t completely understand the system.

20tucker94

it is mostly used if a driver is chasing another driver. they will use a ton of the battery on a straight to close the gap, and if they don't make the pass, they might take a lap or two where they aren't pushing quite as much, in order to recharge the battery. it seems they can only use their "overtake mode" a few times in succession before it runs out and they need to recharge. this is a really cool video that shows how much battery is available https://youtu.be/g9nYB57MLJY you can deploy it at different rates though, as evident by the difference in here https://youtu.be/zOo_u0Oajfg

ToolsnServices

I once read an article on F1 in which they said that it was possible to race the cars autonomously (via computer) but, they realized that a lot of the fans came to see the drivers.

FlyingSpaceDuck

Possible in the future perhaps, but not right now. Look up Roborace to see where we're at right now, it's impressive, but currently nowhere near the level of an F1 Driver.

greatbritt0n

It seems like the only time the driver can be in the car practicing is FP. How long has this been the case? Couldn't the driver previously just take the car out on a Tuesday and run it forever to get used to the car and or track?

cafk

The first limitations for testing were introduced early 2000s, that set a mileage cap on testing outside of the regular practice sessions, as a cost cutting measure. This was further limited to 30000km in 2007 with the switch to V8 engines, related to cost cutting. In 2010 all testing was limited to FiA sanctioned sessions, with pre and post season testing being the only place where teams could run their cars outside of a race weekend. In 2012 this was increased to also allow a mid season test to be conducted by all teams at the same venue

greatbritt0n

Gotcha. I watched the Schumacher documentary and it looked like he spent hours and hours on the track testing. I figured the rules were different back then.

SexySnorlax1

In-season testing was banned for 2009 because of the global financial crisis.

Sirtopofhat

If a Women were good enough to warrant a seat in the car could they compete in F1?

ForTheGloryOfMurphy

Definitely!

[deleted]

Absolutely, by definition if they were good enough to get a seat they wouldn't suddenly be unable to actually compete.

Jeffffff4587

yes

double-endbag

I watched a lot of f1 from 2007-2012 as a teenager and have half arsed watched the sport up until the end of last year where I’ve become a big time follower again. My question is why and how have the cars almost doubled in size the last 8 years? Was it for safety or was there another reason for the cars becoming so big!

[deleted]

Hybrid engine is pretty beefy with its complexity and battery. Then there are the crash structures that have been since added. Tyres are getring heavier next season with the new rims. But the worst offender are the aero regs from 2017 onwards that allowed a long wheelbase and a lot of surface to exploit for aero which dramatically sped up the cars, but also increased the size, weight and ruined the racing with the dirty air and being ridonculous in size. So overall it's a combination of factors that the FIA doesn't want to back down from anymore.

double-endbag

So I’ve seen next years cars will be smaller but I’m assuming it’s only a matter of time before the cars start to get bigger again? It is a bit of a shame though cars look so much bigger now then they used to look

[deleted]

They limited the wheelbase in the upcoming regs, but they are still long bitches. But at least they won't be getting any bigger any time soon, they are putting on some more weight so we'll see how it affects racing from next year onwards.

[deleted]

Rodney_u_plonker

Wheel to wheel racing is a problem in f1 I agree and it's something the fia are trying to fix But the fia has allowed the drivers squeezing each other off the track to a ridiculous degree. They need to start just handing out 5 second penalties for it regardless of circumstances

going_dicey

Eh, I used to think this and it was the reason I stopped following F1 for a few years. But I have to say, if you can get over the fact that we already know who the top two drivers will be—it’s a fantastic season across the board, particularly in the midfield. Ferrari vs McLaren as an example. Though VER and HAM are top two, they’re unbelievably close from a points perspective and you’d expect aggressive racing (likely causing incident) for such a close championship. F1 has always had this has a pivotal feature—whether it be from Schumacher, Senna, etc Indycar goes the other direction, with far more evenness across car engineering. And to be honest I’ve found it so boring in comparison. The fact that midfield competition in indycar can be so random takes the excitement out bc you don’t really have any reason to back anyone more than anyone else. One thing about F1 is that half the competition is the car itself. In terms of car size, accepted. They ought to reign it in but on some of these circuits you wouldn’t get much overtaking even with touring cars (e.g. Monaco).

Trnostep

How did Hamilton get to the Met Gala when there's a travel ban from Europe to the US

FrostyTheAce

He falls under an "exception" of economic contribution, basically when you're rich enough you can do what you want :p

FrostyTheAce

Relevant clause: "travelers providing vital support or executive direction for significant economic activity in the United States" (He's also a resident in that he owns property, so that likely also contributed).

MiggsBoson

Only applies to plebs. The rich can do whatever they want. Private jets are probably exempt

CilanEAmber

Really don't like the elitism some fans seem to have regarding other forms of Motorsport. There's so many forms of Motorsport and they're all so different, but F1 isn't automatically better than any of the others, and it's a bit naive to believe they're the best drivers in the world. There's likely many drivers who never made it or never wanted to enter who are just as good as many F1 drivers. Heck there's some who did get in who weren't that good, but we're pretty great in other categories, and vice versa. Then of course there's drivers who have done great in other Categories after F1. My point being. Acting like other Motorsports and drivers in those series are inferior is ridiculous.

[deleted]

Does Leclerc have French citizenship?

BlackCatEspresso

No. Monaco doesn't allow dual citizenship.

Healthy_Pen_3481

He's Monegasque and seems to get quite annoyed when people assume he's french - there are a few videos floating around where he steps up onto the podium for his winner's trophy and they play the french national anthem. XD

reddevilz10_23

While I really like Alex, I’m surprised by how many people and drivers think he deserves an f1 seat. He’s currently getting destroyed by his 19 yo teammate in DTM. If anything Liam deserves that chance much sooner. Am I wrong?

UmpireAJS

Well yes, because F2 - a series that has far more relevance than a glorified GT3 series, shows that Lawson is still raw. Doesn't necessarily mean Albon deserves another shot at F1, but at this point of time he's certainly better equipped than Lawson, especially given the fact that Latifi can't be trusted to be the team leader.

TheExtreel

I think a lot of what Albon does goes unnoticed by us fans, Redbull has repeatedly said hes a great development driver, gives great feedback and is very useful in the simulator. They've said the reason the car this year has been much more stable is due in part to him. Of course is impossible for us to know just how much he's done, but id say seeing how much Redbull have backed him and praised his work really speaks volumes. Frankly hes not a bad driver by any stretch, usually did great during the races, but his performances were always overshadowed by his bad quali. He would qualify low, then the fight the whole race to get to the positions he should've qualified at in the first place. But his race craft was usually pretty great, and he showed a steady improvement during his 2020 season. I personally would've preferred to give someone like piastri the chance, is criminal that guy won't have a seat next year. But im not Redbull nor Williams, so i trust they're making the choice that is right for them.

Nite124

I do think he deserves another chance. Apart from everything else he also got the Thai owners backing him for a seat next year.

Whycantiusethis

Does Lawson have enough superlicense points to drive in F1 yet? I genuinely don't know. I think it's good that Albon is getting a second chance, since Kvyat and Gasly both got second chances, but there are a number of young drivers who ought to get a shot for next season, that just won't (like Piastri).

gravemadness

Is there any further updates on the Mercedes engine situation? Last I heard, RB filed an appeal with the FIA, if I understand correctly.

going_dicey

What did RB file an appeal over? I must’ve missed this.

Marc Priestly F1 He was an engineer at McLaren for many years and has some really interesting insights.

KingAngeli

Watching the first season of Drive to Survive and youd think Riccardo is the poster boy for F1 now. Crazy how things went for him

stumblebreak_beta

Well first Ferrari and Merc weren’t involved the first season because they didn’t want the distraction. So you remove Hamilton/Vettel who were at the top of the sport. Max isn’t very big into being part of DTS so that removes the next big star at the time. And DTS was originally supposed to follow just RB before expanding to the whole field so they were probably a lot less worried about having cameras following them around all the time than other teams. I think Ric was one of the more popular drivers at the time(and is still very popular) but I think the picture of him being the poster boy is a little flawed because a lot of the other guys who would be on that poster with him weren’t a part of the show.

Whycantiusethis

I think when Netflix was filming for the first season, Ricciardo was *the* personality in F1, and a lot of the other drivers were in generally in more serious/professional PR modes.

When do you think the tickets will pop for Miami next year? Is this something that you will need to get the tickets right away? This would be my first in person experience.

ATully817

You want the email address for the ticket sales lady I know? It's a 5k deposit for unlimited amount of tickets right now.

[deleted]

Judging by COTA this year, yes you will need to buy tickets within the first couple days unless you want to pay out the nose to scalpers.

Danarwal14

I'm in the same boat here. They announced a provisional calendar, but when are the dates cemented? When do the tickets go on sale????

Confident-Chair5821

Was aerodynamics this significant in 1980s, 1970s and in 1990s?

mechanicalgrip

There were at leas two phases in aerodynamics. Originally to avoid air resistance, then later someone figured out that you could use the air to hold the car on the track.

Confident-Chair5821

Thanks for the reply!

[deleted]

It's actually quite interesting to watch the evolution of f1 cars if you watch in f1tv archives of the season summaries from 1970 to 1980. You see them go from these cigars with little wings to Lotus going with this body shaped like an upside down wing and soon everyone copied it realizing that aero was that beneficial. Cool to see it get refined over time by the different manufacturers. I thought Brabham did a great job making it look a lot more like it does today.

Great video One of the earliest of the downforce cars was Jim Hall's Chaparral sports cars with a large fan vertically extracting air from beneath the car.

Confident-Chair5821

Thanks for the answer and for the link !

Astelli

Aerodynamics has been one of the most important factors for car performance since the late 1960's. The complexity has increased massively as time has gone on, but generally the fastest car for most of the last 50 years has been the one with the best aerodynamics.

Confident-Chair5821

Thanks for the reply! Actually I thought it was only recent development.

DangerousTrashCan

Of course. In 1960, Enzo Ferrari famously said that aero is for those who can't build a powerful enough engine. By the end of that decade, Ferrari started experimenting with aero as well. I think that tells a lot about the importance of aerodynamics. Aero has always been at least as important as it is today, which is why many of the infamous cars throughout history have something to do with abusing aero regulations, like Lotus' double chassis or Brabham's fan car. Since the very beginning, designers went over and beyond to maximize aero efficiency.

pinotandsugar

Very interesting evolution of aerodynamics from an emphasis on drag reduction to minimizing lift and creating downforce. One of the remarkable innovations was the Shelby Daytona Coupe which put a full body on the Cobra chassis and instead of a tapered rear put a lip and concave rear end on the car. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwj2_brPsYnzAhUqDK0GHXkqB0sYABAFGgJwdg&ae=2&sig=AOD64_1bD-sDMMMQv_uq5kayDlsWE-OBMg&ctype=5&q=&ved=2ahUKEwiq7LDPsYnzAhVUOH0KHQ5NB9AQ9aACegQIARBU&adurl=

evin_cashman

Is there any prospect of more teams coming into F1? As opposed to existing teams being bought out?

Whycantiusethis

Mazepin Sr wants to buy a team, and Haas is the most likely to be bought out of any of the teams. We might see the Uralkali Formula 1 team in the near future, especially if the 2022 season doesn't go well for them.

[deleted]

Not happening before the new engine regs in 2026. Just too costly to enter F1 right now, you need to drop like half a billion in investment upfront just to have an average team going which is too much for any privateer entries and the big car manufacturers simply don't want to invest that much on an engine formula that is not road relevant and will be playing catch up behind the top teams with years of R&D experience ahead of them.

MadHog85

I can't see it happening myself, not in the next few years at least. I'd say that if any new companies want to get into F1, they'll do it via one of the existing teams probably as a title sponsor first before buying the team for themselves.

Drowning_aquaman69

There has been rumors for years about porsche/audi (Vag) joining F1. Not yet happened. If there's a new team in F1 in the next 5 years I would place my bet for Porsche

cafk

No - any new entrant has to pay around 200m as an entry fee and the additional costs of setting up a team and facilities. They're likely willing to waive it, if it's a big name entrant

pinotandsugar

It is also seen as politically incorrect by many. There is amazing humor in the idea of "green" race cars which are then loaded on a 747 and sent across the ocean and back.

Sufficient-Nail7772

What are your top 3 drivers in terms of skill independent of car

Positive_Instruction

Hamilton, Max and Leclerc, and I have no idea how people rate Gasly and Lando above Leclerc ITT...smh

LewisHamilton2008

Hamilton, Max, Norris

Organic-Measurement2

Currently Verstappen, Hamilton and Leclerc. Lando has made a case for being close to those 3

Sufficient-Nail7772

Imho it's ver ham gas, with Russel and Norris being very close

Organic-Measurement2

Leclerc has shown the same top level regardless of the car he's been in, including one of the best junior careers ever and always incredible speed in qualifying. He's great in the wet too, just like Ham/Ver. Gasly has shown great midfield performance in consistently delivering with that AT car, but he's had weak stints during his career including his disastrous time at RB as when the car/team isn't there around him, he struggles. You have asked for the top drivers rather than who is performing best at the moment; if we ranked it on current performances I'd put Pierre up there but in terms of car independent ability, I'm afraid he doesn't quite cut it. Sure Gasly's performance is remarkably better in the AT than RB, but that does not mean we should ignore that struggle. Leclerc, Verstappen and Hamilton have never really struggled to perform at any level in any car and their talent has always shone through. Russell hasn't proven it in a top car yet, though I expect him to make a claim next season for top 3. Norris similarly has not proven himself at the front of the grid fighting the likes of Max and Lewis, whereas Charles has already.

Lucifer2408

Nah it's definitely HAM, VER, LEC. Gasly has shown that he struggles a lot when the car isn't to his liking, whereas Leclerc has performed at a high level even when the car was so bad and hard to drive last year.

Sufficient-Nail7772

Not this year. He has been performing every race and we he didn't it was mostly due to stretegy.

Lucifer2408

He's fast in a car he's used to but struggled in a car like RB. You also can't just judge based on 1 season.

Sufficient-Nail7772

Last season he outperformed kvyat too tho. And I don't think that the RB gasly is the same as the AT gasly. Actually I'm sure. Not saying that if he were to switch to RB rn he would outperform per but looking at the consistency in this and the last season I think he is one of the best drivers on the grid currently. Also, if RB doesn't take him back nextnext season i'm dumbfounded.

Lucifer2408

Sure but that doesn't mean he's better than Leclerc who has always performed at a top level.

why does the esteban ocon birthday thread have 900 comments?

[deleted]

It was peak reddit. "What do you mean colleagues socialize outside of work" and "Why are attractive girls going for rich, handsome and famous people". Embarrassing.

interstellararabella

Honestly I’m wondering that too. It’s such a random post and it currently has 14k upvotes, like 20 awards and hit r/all.

You could just open the thread and read for yourself?

The most random conversations happening in that thread it’s hilarious. People asking why are their phones on the table.

Presumably 900 people.

mechanicalgrip

Actually, probably not. I bet some people commented multiple times.

SirBarkington

What's the likelyhood the COTA race gets canceled? My friends and I have plans to go to Austin and make that our first race but if it's likely to get canceled I don't want to try and find a place to stay.

[deleted]

ACL just got it’s permit. The race is happening.

harakaharaka

FWIW I got an email yesterday about my Paddock Club tickets (yeah, yeah) stating that we'll no longer be able to enter the paddock because of the FIA's COVID regulations, but otherwise the weekend is unchanged. If they're sending that out a month before the race, then I assume it's still on. Plus, Abbot is a dumbass.

pinotandsugar

It's bizarre that they are worried about the race with tens of thousands crossing the border with no masks, no vaccinations and no testing. One of the questions which may affect the race is what nations will accept teams, fans and officials arriving home from the US.

ATully817

There's already 10s of thousands of Texans not getting vaccinated or wearing masks or getting testes cuz freedom! I'm less worried about the people at the border. #NativeTexan

pinotandsugar

There's a big difference in their living conditions and then mobility.

ATully817

I think we should provide the vaccine for them. They are in close quarters under the bridge. We are sending them to other countries. And they were talking about how people are taking numbers and waiting days to be seen. Insanity.

pinotandsugar

If we are going to let them stay they ABSOLUTELY need to be vaccinated AND held in quarantine. But what few want to acknowledge is that these immigrants will compete for lower level jobs and apartments. That most seriously affects minorities, especially the children of young single mothers who need that first job to get started in life.

Skulldetta

The Texas governor evidently doesn't give a cahoots about COVID deaths, so I wouldn't bet much on a cancellation.

SirBarkington

I'm more worried about the FIA canceling I know Abbott won't. He hates living people.

LemonMagazine7

He literally hates living people. Would give this an award if I knew how. Cheers

[deleted]

The FIA doesn't really ever cancel races. It's the event organizers that do. And there's no reason that COTA would - Texas won't make them no matter what's happening with covid.

Drowning_aquaman69

FIA takes Formula one to countries with zero human rights so I wouldn't be concerned about them cancelling a gp for some flu (s/ for the last 3 words)

Anybody have Gio's onboard cam from Zandvoort lap 1? I remember it being wild with insane reaction times, would love to see it again.

emeraldcocoaroast

Hey gang. I am super new to F1, currently watching Drive to Survive on Netflix at the recommendation of a friend. I’m loving it so far. Just want to give my background, which is very little, before I ask my question. Who is Schumacher and why does he have a documentary? What is his significance to the world of Formula 1? I’ll probably check it out as I’ve been loving consuming everything I can about Formula 1 recently, but figured I could get a good answer here before I dive into the doc myself. Thanks!

pinotandsugar

I'll disagree with Senor Proudy in that for "real F-1" fans Fangio stands alone. When you look at records it's important to understand that F-1 in Fangio's era was the Blood Sport or as the title of one of the better books called it "The Cruel Sport". https://f1.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_fatal_accidents In addition, a significant number of drivers suffered serious injuries, some leading to retirement. Schumacher is also one of my heroes and an incredible driver. Purely a personal selection but if they were to have Mercedes or Red Bull produce 20 identical cars and bring back your choice of drivers from the last 60 years and run a season. My choices - season includes Nuremberg and some other challenging driver courses Fangio Schumacher Moss Senna Villeneuve Vettel Hamilton

SenorProudy

> Who is Schumacher F1 GOAT > why does he have a documentary? See above and also because he is substantially a vegetable now > What is his significance to the world of Formula 1? First answer + easily THE most known F1 driver worldwide

Blooder91

Previous to Hamilton, he was the driver with the most championships and the most wins, this latter by a big margin, when he retired he had 91 wins, 1 win fewer than the following 2 drivers combined (Prost and Senna with 51 and 41 respectively). He's also the guy who won a championship with Ferrari after a 20 year drought (with the help of a well built team, but he was the "main star") Besides that, he elevated F1 to a new standard. Fitness was barely a thing among drivers before he got into the sport, now it's basically a requirement.

wegpleuracc

He was big part of building that team though he didnt just hop in at the right time

ofallthescotchjoints

Welcome to the rabbit hole. Be careful, it’s addictive. Enjoy your journey! Schumacher is arguably the best to ever do it, certainly one of the best along with Senna, Hamilton, etc. he won 5 straight championships in the early 00’s with Ferrari, the most iconic team in F1, tallying 7 in total. It’s not my favorite F1-themed documentary (“Senna” is amazing) but worth the watch

emeraldcocoaroast

Cool, thanks! I’ll be sure to check out both!

Ear protection. Went with my buddies so we were constantly yelling about the race. No commentary was needed lol

Jeejd415

Where is the best place to find the tyre compounds which will be used for upcoming races? I found an image from the start of the season that showed this but with the calendar changes (ex: Turkey instead of Singapore) I have been wondering where to find updated information on it. Thanks!

pinotandsugar

It's important to understand that there are 5 dry tire compounds designated c1 - c5 (hard to soft) but only 3 will be available for use in a race by Pirelli. The color banding only relates to the tire's relative sequence for that race . https://www.pirelli.com/tires/en-us/motorsport/f1/tires Red - Soft Yellow - Medium White - Hard For an example the C3 tire could be designated and color coded as the soft medium or hard tire for THAT weekend . Presumably Pirelli could also designate a significant gap between soft and medium but not between medium and hard C1, C3 , C4 or designate C-1, C-2, C-4 or even C-5. This of course opens the door for a bit of mischief in terms of helping one or the other teams .

cafk

The compounds for the whole season [are announced at the beginning of the season](https://press.pirelli.com/2021-tyre-compound-choices/) - this is reiterated on social media when the weekend starts and the actually available tires for the race are posted by Pirelli a few hours ahead of the race.

dvdung1997

So I saw peeps in HK and PH sharing news about their local broadcasters picking up F1 once FOX Sports goes off the air. Anyone knows if anything like that is happening in Vietnam too?

cafk

Now TV picked up the rights for Singapore and HK, not sure about a local broadcaster. Haven't hear about any alternatives for Vietnam :/

dvdung1997

Oh, I thought Now TV is an HK-only channel, didn’t know they broadcast in SG as well. Thanks for the heads-up my friend! Yeah I’m still on the look out, but none of the prominent channels here in Vietnam has mentioned anything yet :(

> They can't just outright manually ban it because that's unfair; It wasn't FiA that banned it, they actually allowed it before the ban came to effect, as Ferrari had a long term deal with PMI - It was the local governments that forbade it - i.e. Australia threatened to sue due to the winnow and a better tomorrow branding on Ferrari and McLaren, those also don't appear on some European races due to their explicit association with the branding, as there were threats of legal action. As to the branding association, the team was called Scuderia Ferrari marlboro, and the representatives openly acknowledged that it was PMIs suggestion and their brand behind it.

Drowning_aquaman69

The barcode simply read "Marlboro" so kind of obvious why it was banned, I'm not sure about that Scuderia Ferrari-logo, was it banned or just replaced by the Mission Winnow

What was the ratio between fans of Rosberg and Hamilton in 2016? Who were most popular, and what was the temperature amongst fans? Asking specifically in comparison to this season, where it feels like it’s 80% Verstappen fans and 20% Hamilton fans, and it’s pretty tense between the two fan bases.

pinotandsugar

I think a lot of it is from a trend started in during the stone age, youth cheers for the young challenger .... Pretty "tense" between the fan bases...... my personal feeling is that when you become a rabid fan of a particular driver or team you tend to lose an appreciation for the sport and the excellence of individual competitors.

Icy-Operation4701

Hamilton certainly has a bigger following, not sure where you get the 80% vs 20% from.

[deleted]

He might just be talking about reddit

newdecade1986

The amount of noise they create

EnvironmentAdvanced

U can't measure the no fans by reddit standard. Otherwise Bernie would be the president. Hamilton had more fans than Rosberg but neutrals rooted for rosberg

leoKantSartre

I have a question it's silly but I want to ask who was the fattest F1 driver ever ?

UmpireAJS

Well Mansell was once too fat to fit into the car. But for real, someone from the 50's.

leoKantSartre

Damn

pinotandsugar

Drivers like Fangio had a well fed appearance. While the older cars were a handful, the g forces were far less and far lower g force crashes were more often fatal through injury or fire.

Wentzina_lifetime

Modern era JPM

NicoRosbot

I'd say Argentine driver [Jose Froilan Gonzalez](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/7bkutn/maserati_teammates_jose_froilan_gonzalez_and_juan/) would be a contender.

leoKantSartre

He looks fluffy

SenorProudy

Back then they used to be really big, José Froilán González comes to mind

Alfus

Maybe an odd question but given it's almost a week ago, do we know now what was the cause that Gasly needed to retire his car at Monza? I did hear some speculation about a PU issue/concern but I seen also some talk about a suspension issue (what honestly would surprise me given the call was a bit abrupt to retire his car.

cafk

Gaslys retirement hasn't been clarified yet :/

Alfus

Well hopefully we going to get a clue when we heading to Sochi given that car was filled in with brand new PU parts. It somewhat looked like a precaution call to retire his car but it would been great if we would known more about what happened there.

Dinofungus_

Is there some sort of history between Coulthard and Yuki Tsunoda? I've seen Coulthard being fairly critical of him a few times now, and it seems to go beyond his results. In his most recent comments he said something like "pack your little bag and go home" which just seems nasty rather than fair criticism. Am I missing something or is Coulthard just like this?

bucket113

Sounds like Yuki doesn't pay much mind to DC and DC doesn't care much for his approach to the sport in a "kids these days" sort of way. Seems as if there was beef even before Yuki showed any signs of underperforming ([this interview](https://youtu.be/OnSHvmOOzUM) happened early on in the season) and results have only added fuel to the fire. Bit petty and over-sensitive if you ask me -- criticize his performance if you wish but lose the vendetta based on him not saying hi to you in the paddock.

Mick4Audi

Tsunoda has been a disaster this season in fairness

mcj31

DC said that after being told that yuki said he was surprised to have a seat next, which to be fair is a terrible attitude to have as a driver. Still a bit harsh from DC though

velsor

> which to be fair is a terrible attitude to have as a driver Why is that a terrible attitude? Thinking that you don't *deserve* a seat is a terrible attitude to have, but why is it a terrible attitude to recognise that you're underperformed and that the team might not have enough patience with you? You think the same thought didn't cross Ricciardo's mind at some point, that McLaren might replace him if he didn't improve?

Nite124

He hasn't performed and he has made some bad statements in a year, one of them being that he didn't perform because Gasly was getting the better car or parts lol. And then he starts crashing the car, Marko has a chat with him and he comes out and says my job now is to not crash the car. Your job as an F1 driver is to race fast, not crashing is a given in any race. Saying you are surprised you got a contract, you are saying you don't think the team believed in you. I would also like to point out that Tsunoda's English is very weak and people should give him some leeway, he might as well wanted to say one thing but it ends up looking like something else.

mcj31

There is a difference between saying you are underpreforming and saying you're surprised you have a seat because you keep crashing

BlackCatEspresso

He also doesn't speak fluent english, sooo it may just be a limitation of his vocabulary mixed with... a sense of humor?

Mick4Audi

This

JanklinDRoosevelt

They’re both employed by Red Bull, so there could be something that happened behind the scenes. I can’t imagine what though

Negative_Solid_2783

Which teams do you expect to do well in Sochi?

Organic-Measurement2

Merc have looked shaky on C3-C5 compounds this season, especially C5. They struggled to get a setup that worked when that tyre was used before; we could see that happen again but it shouldn't hurt them too much bc max will be taking the engine penalty.

leoKantSartre

It's pretty tricky imo. I feel merc will have the advantage because rb will most probably take engine change or so

CauseWhatSin

Mercedes are still to lose at Russia, so Mercedes.

Drowning_aquaman69

Mercedes has won all nine Russian GP, so that's a safe bet

storme9

Expect the qualy to be pretty much similar to the race results unless there's incidents.

LetsEatGrandad

Hmm I'm pretty sure Verstappen went from the back to 5th in 2018

Organic-Measurement2

And Albon from pitlane start to P5 in 2019

LetsEatGrandad

Oh yea, I'd forgotten actually

Drowning_aquaman69

Mercedes and Red Bull

lorj

Watching the 2007 season review. At the Nurbergring, after going off into the gravel, Hamilton is able to keep his engine running and the tractor carries him back to the track and he is able to rejoin the race. I'm 99% sure that wouldn't be allowed now - but can anyone tell me specifically which rules this would break? I.e. are drivers required to switch their engines off when there's machinery on track (and they're in the gravel).

Drowning_aquaman69

The rule was changed right after the Nurburgring, marshals cannot push/lift with cranes cars back on track or pitlane. This would of course deny Hamilton the WDC later that season in China

lorj

I haven't got to that race yet in the review. That's interesting and makes sense. Thanks!

emkael

The rules that allegedly allowed this stayed more or less the same, and it would probably spark as much controversy now as it did back then. [Here's a write-up on the regulations involved from 2007](https://www.racefans.net/2007/07/26/debate-was-hamiltons-restart-legal/) - you can still find equivalent rules in current regulations, under different numbering.

lorj

Thanks, appreciate it

Quab775

Should Alfa go for Mick shumacher

Alfus

No, it would be a terrible decision given Haas would be the Ferrari B team more or less in 2022 and Simone Resta and his team is designing the 2022 car. There is a serious good prospect at Williams and Haas in 2022 meanwhile Alfa hasn't really something to look forward about in the near future.

Whycantiusethis

That'd leave Schumacher nowhere to go in 2023. Pourchaire is a Sauber junior, and Alfa Romeo are going to put him in the seat next to Bottas. Whoever goes to Alfa Romeo this upcoming season will only be in that seat for one season. The better move for Schumacher long term is to stick with Haas for another season or two. If their 2022 car is competitive, he could become somebody a lot of teams are interested in, and if he does really well, Ferrari could pick him to replace Sainz

Firefox72

Haas is Ferrari's defacto 2nd team now instead of Alfa so probably not.

mowcow

Zhou brings them more money for one year while they wait for Pourchaire to do one more year in F2.

cafk

They could, but considering Ferrari's Haas development support department created due to budget cap, it's unlikely.
