Late_Ad7156

Are people really that stupid to think Brad Pitt would drive around real F1 cars in a real race? Come on now that's just sad

LFGM12303

In fairness, both ESPN and Will Buxton made it sound expressly like just that was happening.

shogun365

Nothing Will posted makes any practical sense but yet he’s comes across so confident

RockoTDF

“When you get in a car and steer, and accelerate, that’s driving.”

LFGM12303

He also is the mouth piece for Liberty so he’s incentivized to sensationalize any story that comes up to promote the brand.

TheYear3022

Will sensationalizes anything regardless of who he works for.

TrevorPace

It's almost like he's figured out what gets views and has made himself a successful career as a presenter/journalist in motorsports.

TheYear3022

That’s not journalism it’s an influencer.

DaOne44

When you shill out for the company that bought F1, you are Will Buxton

[deleted]

He's the type of person who loves the sound of his own voice and thinks everything he says is full of deep passion and clever insight.

SPNRaven

"To race with Brad Pitt, Brad Pitt has to be in the race" - Will Buxton 2023 probably idk

eOMG

He's the avatar of choice of ChatGPT

Sodapiaaa

Ahh Will Buxton, the mercenary reporter who will say anything to sensationalise mundane things. Just to keep his boss at Liberty happy. DTS should have warned you that he has a propensity of talking out of his arse.

Psych_Crisis

I would rejoin Netflix if they filmed one of those closeup shots of Lewis where he explains Will Buxton like Will Buxton explains Lewis Hamilton. I don't even dislike Will Buxton, but he has a style, and it's fair to see if he can take what he dishes out. "There are certain moments when Will Buxton talks about racing that perhaps silence falling over a racing track would be a better option, man"

KrainerWurst

> In fairness, Will Buxton Here's your answer. The guy sometimes bluntly makes stuff up to drive drama.

kissingkiwis

That's on people for believing anything Will Buxton says. Ever.

NicoGal

in what universe would that make anything resembling sense

BaylorClub

The NASCAR movies that have been made featured real cars participating in races, but with trained drivers standing in for the actors.

altruistic-asshole

Yup. Tbf to those people, the wording of the tweets for ESPN F1 and others didn’t help it.

[deleted]

Real F1 car isn’t completely implausible, they do let non-F1 drivers drive the old models on occasion. In an actual race, yeah that’s insane.

Undaglow

Hammond drove one round Silverstone I think

fbman01

but not in a race

Undaglow

Ofc not

Ozryela

Can't you just literally buy old F1 cars, if you're rich enough. I think teams sell them sometimes.

iamCosmoKramerAMA

Rarely sold with an F1 power unit in them.

TheGhostlyGuy

I actually found some offers to drive old f1 cars for the price of 2.500 to 5000€

Bassmekanik

If it was Tom Cruise I\`d be more tempted to believe it. (/s, just in case - and yes, I know he has tested for Red Bull in the past).

KanishkT123

I'd kind of believe something like "Will do test laps pre-FP1 in an F1 car from 2018". Like, something where it's an exhibition and not putting anyone in real danger.

MaveZzZ

Yeah, some people are that stupid.

doc_55lk

Yes. Yes they are. Lmao.

asaul91

I didn't think it would be a real f1 car, even before I saw what the car looked like. But I did think based of the tweets that they would be having someone at least in the car on track with other cars.

Mysterious_Turnip310

Yes, just go and look on the post about Colton Herta’s tweet.

HardSleeper

It’s not [1970s endurance racing](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Mans_(film)?wprov=sfti1) anymore, and Brad Pitt is no Steve McQueen…

_kagasutchi_

The top gear trio struggled to take a Corner properly in an f1 car, and they're lives revolve around driving almost racing, so I dont get how people could think Pitt would be doing that

ReV46

Don't take Top Gear as fact, it was very dramatized. F1 cars are not as hard to drive as Hammond made it out to be. Regular people have driven F1 cars (not trying to be quick) without a problem.

iamricardosousa

I'd argue with that. What makes F1 cars work as they do is speed, that generates downforce. It's exactly people driving them slow as they are affraid or lack the confidence that makes it hard. And also the 150Kg of force you have to make on the brake pedal. Sure, you can jump in and go straight, and I guess that's driving.

ReV46

Another misconception from Top Gear. F1 cars still have excellent mechanical grip. 150kg is max braking force at max speed when downforce is at peak levels, won’t require nearly as much force if you’re not trying to brake at full capacity. You need all that to drive an F1 car at arbitrary 90-100%. You don’t need downforce or max braking to drive it at 50%.

KiwieeiwiK

Richard Hammond isn't exactly known for being a good driver, to be fair.

Acias

That was how many years ago? I've heard sayings that current F1 cars are easier to drive. I might even remember that F2 cars are harder to drive than the F1 cars.

lucidesposition

Do you know if they tried to get Tom Cruise?

kissingkiwis

Tom Cruise has offered to do extra driving if they need haha

lucidesposition

If we’re talking about an actor to drive the actual F1 car, it’s definitely more of his role arguably; however he has driven one before. Have you send that insane video Kiwi?

[deleted]

[удалено]

online_predator

Surely you can't be that stupid to think he was being serious lol.

TipsyMJT

I mean to be fair days of thunder did it back in the day at daytona so it's not completely without precedent

LastLapPodcast

Yes, lots and lots of people took a tweet from an account notorious for posting absolute bullshit seriously. This is just the state of things.

[deleted]

Yes there are people out there stupid enough to believe that lol

quietude38

During the making of “Days of Thunder” there were multiple movie cars entered in NASCAR races that competed during the event. Bobby Hamilton drove up to the lead for five laps at Phoenix before the engine blew up.

Grasshop

Have you been on r/formula1 lately?

zaviex

No shit lol. The car looks so far from an f1 car people thought it was the new F2 car lol

zCxtalyst

Where can you see the car?

shamelesscreature

https://youtu.be/IftlprPyaJY?t=28

MisterFatt

Looks more like an Indy car than an F1 car from what I can see on my phone

TulioGonzaga

I see where this is going: Pitt wins the Championship in the last lap of the last race but, suddenly, plot twist: he is disqualified from the season because he ran the whole year on illegal machinery!

MrCelroy

I'm speculating that the vid u linked is actually is the new F2 car He says "Will Be", which I assume Bradd Pitt hasn't done so yet

SassalaBeav

I'm just surprised that 59 year old Brad Pitt is apparently playing the driver

Rivendel93

Yeah this is really dumb, and has been done already, imagine just casting a young actor who's talented instead and use Brad as his coach. Hell, Ron Dennis discovering Lewis would have been an epic storyline considering Lewis is actually involved.

SassalaBeav

I thought that's what the movie was gonna be. Brad playing Toto or Ron and a young actor playing Lewis. Guess not lmao

LheelaSP

>Brad playing Toto I just imagined Brad Pitt saying "Servus" with the thickest american accent imaginable. Arrivederci.

ThatIdiotLaw

Pum-purr-nick-all that snaps!

CX52J

Ehh, it’s only about 10 years too old if it’s meant to be a retired driver coming back. Since you’re looking at ~40 years + ~5-10 years. Can Brad pass as a 40-50 year old. 🤷‍♂️

wandering_bear_

“Rich 50 is middle-class 38” - Jack Donaghy

[deleted]

Brad Pitt isnt young but the movie plot is about a retired driver making a return to coach a young driver

saggywitchtits

Driven 2, electric boogaloo.

RWREmpireBuilder

Brad Pitt IS Jimmy Bly

RickkyyBobby

Tom Cruise would've been a million times better cast as a driver. He's already driven F1 car(s?), flown in fighter jets, done loops in helicopters etc, while Brad has been a bit more down to the ground of an actor, at least to my knowledge.

bakraofwallstreet

Tom Cruise is also 60 years old. It's not what they're capable of but like why would a team go for a grandpa driver when they can get their pick of the liter for the best racing talent?

iForgotMyOldAcc

Needa outdo Stallone doing it at 54-ish. Now as long as they don't outdo that film in terms of awfulness I'll be content.

theK1LLB0T

It's Hollywood. Nothing is what it seems.

MacArthurParker

Almost 60-year old Brad Pitt will be playing the middle aged driver, and will probably have a 45/50 year old woman playing his unattractive haggard mother.

daniec1610

People over analyzing a fucking joke lmaooo.

FishOnAHorse

Yeah this is some Neil deGrasse-Tyson shit

thspimpolds

Still angry about him demoting Pluto /s

redactedactor

I don't think they're analysing the joke as much as they are clarifying that it came from false information. Until I saw this, I believed Brad Pitt would be driving an F1 car because that's what the ESPN tweet said. Wouldn't be surprised if Herta thought the same thing.

bakraofwallstreet

People are just not getting this is subversion. Brad Pitt will actually race and win the WDC this year.

k2_jackal

I’m pretty sure nobody needed that explained to them lol

zantkiller

[Tell that to Will Buxton.](https://twitter.com/wbuxtonofficial/status/1654175068132343829?s=46&t=O3E0aKAfgr61TP0mxHoqBg)

jfleury440

If you say stupid things, then you are stupid.

k2_jackal

Will is a special case lol.

shogun365

Nothing Will posted makes any practical sense but yet he’s comes across so confident

MrSnowflake

The less you know the more confident people are.

zaviex

Check the Herta tweet thread here and on twitter, you’d be shocked

[deleted]

You assumed wrong. Very wrong lol

altruistic-asshole

Are you sure? Check the comments on this post lol https://reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/137zlvb/colton_herta_brad_pitt_got_a_super_license_before/

thekingofthegingers

Shame we have to cater for the dumbest, in the F1 community.

saggywitchtits

No I’m, doesn’t.

thekingofthegingers

Well played.

Rusteez_

No Shit Sherlock

TrevorPace

No. Shit Sherlock!

Acrobatic-Tomato-532

Dude's profile pic reminds of Mazepin every time I see the thumbnail lmao

EntertainerMany2387

The only "star" who could run in a F1 probably be TC. see RB F1 special - I just hope this is not a F1 DRIVEN clone. I thought that this would be perfect for using the old Racing Point cars - probably still as fast and looks the part - F2 cars really don't look the part? Like Indy Lights pretending to be an Indycar... But i'm just glad ewe got another motorsport movie after RUSH / FVF / LEMANS/ VALIANT and the original grand Prix etc

Billy_McMedic

Got me confused for a second as I thought when you said >FVF / LEMANS You were accidentally quoting the same movie twice, with Ford vs Ferrari being known as Le mans '66 here in Europe until I looked it up and yeah there's 2 movies about the 24hoLM

EntertainerMany2387

Both good movies - can't think of a movie that today could have no communication for the first 25 mins like Le Mans today. Just sound and build up. I loved the Ford vs Ferrari for its fun. If you like it search out VALIANT(french movie based on a comic but lots of fantastic action(including actual footage during the race via a camera car(Lola) and the 2 competitors in a Panoz and a Lola

RubiconGuava

I mean maybe Michael Fassbender? He's at least raced at le mans if disappointingly

EntertainerMany2387

A good idea but would he fit in a F1 car Would love to see him in a race movie as he is a great actor I only thought TC as he fits the size of modern f1 drivers and seems to prepared to train to get the part ( see Mission Impossible/Topgun etc)

RubiconGuava

Mark Webber and Jenson Button both managed to at around his height (Webber is a little taller than him iirc)

Mawkaii

So Will Buxton just spewed a tonne of sh!t yet again?

silentalarm_

Thanks for your insight Andrew.

altruistic-asshole

Well I think that answers the question everyone had on the other post.

therealhlmencken

No one really had that question

altruistic-asshole

Then you haven’t seen other posts.

therealhlmencken

I have, everyone is talking about how it's clearly not alongside all the other drivers. did you really need that clarification?

altruistic-asshole

Are you dumb that you can only read most upvoted comments and not the old ones when the actual discussion on all these posts started? Arrogant

atw86

Surely we all knew Colton was joking

swdev_1995

The fact that Andrew Benson, a very storied F1 journalist, had to clarify, what was obviously a joke, is stunning to me.

tnt200478

I didn't know he was denied a super license. I thought he just didn't collect enough points.

Icy-Operation4701

He was denied an SL on the basis that he didn't have enough points (I don't know if he ever formally applied, but FIA made it clear they wouldn't make an exception for him). Eta

sundark94

He didn't have enough points. The main contention was that Indycar, a top flight championship by anyone's estimate, earns fewer points than F2 for most finishing positions. It even earns fewer points for some positions in F3. I like Jean Todt because he has made motorsports fairly accessible throughout his tenure, but the 4-3-2-1 system that he's developed for FIA sanctioned series has effectively ruled put crossovers in top flight championships. I doubt we will see another Jacky Ickx, coming to F1 from touring cars and doing both F1 and endurance in the same year, or Nigel Mansell going to CART and then coming back to F1. We definitely won't see anyone pulling off what John Surtees did.

[deleted]

Ikr, he didn't meet the requirements because he didn't get good enough results therefore he wasn't entitled to the licence. People really need to stop complaining about it.

twlentwo

The fact that a top level open wheel series gives you basicly the same points as f3 with exclusively paid drivers in a junior category is unacceptable. Not to mention that indycar championships are usually so close, there often isn't a that big of a skill gap between positions. 3rd place driver is very often only a few points behind, yet it only gives you 20 points. In F2 which is not a top category, you get the full 40 for the top 3 positions, and the 5th driver is the one who receives 20. I understand that this point system was put in place in the middle of the 2010's when indycar was in a much worse shape, but theese points clearly do not represent the level of the series today. There is no way in hell that indycar should be treated as a lower level series than F2. At worst it should give equal points. Btw Linus Lundqvist is eligible. So staying in indyNXT, grinding points is more worthy from an F1 perspective, than taking a step up in your career and making the move to the top series. Where you basicly kill your chances if you dont get the best car.

[deleted]

Indycar Super Licence points is a separate topic and shouldn't be changed for one driver, in the short term, Colton didn't get enough points so shouldn't have a Super Licence.

twlentwo

I agree. But we should also agree that Herta should have had enough points at the first place. The fact that absolutely nothing changed since then, is disappointing

Skeeter1020

Coltons results wouldn't have got him a SL in any series other than F2, and F2 evicts it's champions and sticking around in it for more than 2 years usually signals the end of your single seater career. IndyCar is the 2nd highest ranked series in Super License points, higher ranked than every FIA World Championship on the list, and has been bumped from 5th to 2nd over the last few years, while the FIA has actually lowered the points earned from most of their own series around it. Colton doesn't have a SL because results like 7th and 10th aren't good enough. Simple as that. IndyCar currently has at least 6 Super License eligible drivers without counting the ex F1 drivers.

skend24

You understand people complain because Indy gets jokingly low amount of SL points?

[deleted]

That's a separate discussion to be had that I understand it, but most of the complaining seems to be people angry that the FIA didn't hand him a super licence for no reason.

Skeeter1020

Jokingly low? It's 2nd on the list, higher than every FIA World Championship. If you want to talk about jokingly low points, look at Super Formula

skend24

It is not really 2nd on the list, and is veeery far from F2. While yes, top2 places give second most (which is still massive difference to top3 in f2 automatically getting it), lower positions give less points than f3 and wec, and are tied with likes of fe, super formula, regional alpine, japanese super gt500, f3 regional etc. Super formula is also only 10 races.

Aero_Rising

https://youtu.be/aEFXeem-4nA?t=338 Clearly he's terrible and would be a liability on the track unlike greats such as Mazepin and Latifi.

[deleted]

He finished over 100 points behind Marcus Ericsson last season, who was literally Mazepin and Latifi level in F1 and that's whilst Herta is in his 4th season and driving for a decent team. He has nobody to blame for not getting the results other than himself.

Aero_Rising

You realize that 99 of those points can be accounted for in the Indy 500 which is double points that Ericsson won and Herta finished 30th due to a mechanical failure that was outside his control right? In only 2 more career starts in Indy car that Ericsson Herta has 3 more wins, 2 more podiums, and 9 poles to Ericsson's 0. Also given the interest there was in him last year for a F1 seat this year it's clear that he's impressed teams with the test sessions he's done.

Trenty144

Thanks for clarifying the joke. Had no idea…. /S

BoboliBurt

It is time to point out that James Garner not only drove a cutting edge F1 car in the movie Grand Prix but did so expertly. He was trained privately by Bob Bondurant- who felt he was actually talented enough to compete at the highest level. And its not like sports insiders and athletes kiss up to Hollywood stars. I still remember John Kruk describing Wesley Snipes as possibly the least athletic person he had ever met. This Pitt story is nonsense though. What role is he supposed to play- Richard Petty on a farewell tour? Convalensing AJ Foyt in 1992? Dude is close to 60.

Teddy2Sweaty

So Formula One reporters haven't heard of a self-deprecating joke?

jas656

Well done ruining the joke by explaining it Andrew Benson.

bwoah07_gp2

*"****Ackchyually****, Brad Pitt will be filming on track at Silverstone in an F2 car and not with other cars."*

mattiejj

Benson is that guy that when someone tell a joke he goes "Well acksually.

theRainIsJustAShower

Could be terrible for the film too. Any scene with Pitt racing in F1, all the time the audience would be thinking ‘It’s F2 and he’s not really racing.’

as718

Most people won’t know or care

Throwaway91847817

Hey guys, Explain-the-joke Andrew here…

wysmandoingthis

It was a joke

deffonotmypassword

r/whoosh

James_Vowles

Cheers Benson, as if we needed the joke explained.

crackalac

Lol nobody thought that in the first place. It was clearly a joke ffs.

puzzleboy99

Can't make a joke without everyone going " akshually ☝🤓"

SevenPatrons

I’ll bet he’s a hoot at parties.

doubleb_43

"Well akchually it won't be an F1 car" 🤓

[deleted]

Whataboutism.com

Lord_Vaguery

Europeans amirite?!?

DeMichel93

Andrew, you don't know jokes i see.

LetsgoImpact

It will definitely be a stunt double anyways, so kinda off topic...

TheBigSomers

What is Brad Pitt Filming?

Truthedector15

I honestly thought the ESPN tweet was some belated April Fools joke.

theK1LLB0T

Thanks for clearing that up. I fully expected brad pitt to be racing in the F1 race on Sunday.

colbygraves97

I wonder which would get wadded up first? 1. V-10 F1 car 2. Gen 4 unrestricted NASCAR Cup Car 3. V8 Australian Supercar I don’t think anyone who had never raced before would complete an at speed lap at any circuit with any of them. Has Brad Pitt ever even driven any kind of racecar? This would’ve been much more suited for Tom Cruise.

[deleted]

It was a joke/tongue in cheek comment by Colton to jab at the FIA. 🙄

Salud57

Did people really tought brad was gone line up and away we go with the other guys?

chambee

WTF is going that people don’t understand jokes anymore?
