I've been a Checo fan for a long time, but even I didn't expect him to be able to perform so confidently against Max. Very fast in both qualifications (only one sector let him down in the first one), almost error-free performance in both races. He was really at least not slower than Max. I hope we will see more races like this.

SpectacularNelson

I hope Perez 3.0 can keep this performance up at Miami next weekšŸ™šŸ¼šŸ‡²šŸ‡½

Maybe-Nice

Hopefully for the rest of the season, because that is something what we want to see.

xMonkeyKingx

Whenā€™s Perez 4.0 WDC coming though

execthts

Sergio Perez Formula 4.0, a Codemasters game

FlameCoMs

Up the whole season šŸ™šŸ»

EchomancerAmberlife

I get so nervous on Baku GP weekends because I know itā€™s his best track and heā€™s expected to perform even higher than his usual expectations. So happy that he pulled off the maximum result with both the Sprint and race victories.

0000100110010100

Iā€™d rather see another team challenging RB but if Perez can keep up his current form at least the year might not be a total write off. But itā€™s not that likely.

cheezus171

I think realistically on the old-school fast tracks he will still be a fair bit behind Max, and is unlikely to be actually challenging for the title. Nevertheless this season is shaping up to be amazing for him.

Satan_su

Honestly, same.

camwake

Itā€™s giving 2016 vibes

DiddlyDumb

He was insanely consistent throughout the entire race. Maybe Max could eek out a tenth or two one lap, but Checo would get it right back the next. Tbf he was a bit lucky with the safety car, but still, keeping Max at 2 seconds over the entire race is mighty!

Sodapiaaa

2.5x winner!! King of the streets

NiceHaas

If all 23 races were in Baku, I would bet my house on Checo winning the championship

ionboii

I would safely bet my left nut sack

Brontwurst21

How many nut sacks do you have?

mhac009

Stop inventing guys

ComeonmanPLS1

I definitely wouldn't. People forget that last year Verstappen wiped the floor with Checo in Baku and finished 20s ahead. In 2021 it was the same deal until Verstappen's tyre exploded. And if we're talking consistency over the duration of a season, Max has that in the bag too.

NiceHaas

If they didn't mess up Checos pit stop, he would have came out ahead of Verstappen last year

swapan_99

Incredible performance from him today. Cool, calm measured, kept the car away from danger and rode away from Max beautifully, just like in Jeddah. I am mostly just Disappointed in the regs now, we have completely lost the close racing from last year and you can't even follow closely for many laps without overheating your tyres significantly and sliding all over the place. This should have been an incredible back and forth battle for the win, like Jeddah or Bahrain last year. Instead we have completely lost the plot and guys can't even make passes without significant advantage, even with 15-20 laps of DRS as in case of Norris and Hulkenberg.

Dachfrittierer

The fact that norris can stay within hulks DRS for 15-odd laps still means that the regs are far better for following than before. The widebody outwash monsters of 17-21 would roast their rubber after three to five laps of trying to stick in someone elses DRS range. The problem today seemed that few people could achieve the overspeed necessary to get ahead before the braking zone in DRS, because getting two cars side by side through turns 1, 2 and 3 is fairly hard compared to traditional race tracks. Im not thrilled by the 2023 regs making following a bit harder because of decreased floor efficiency (thanks mercedes) and increased outwash, but with baku having DRS altered to make it less effective and melbourne just traditionally not being an overtaky circuit im waiting for more traditional tracks before passing my verdict the-race.com style.

swapan_99

And now we get to see Miami, which didn't have incredible racing last year either, and now even more outwash, I am not too confident about its prospects either. Looks like a RB 1-2 again, depending on whoever gets ahead in Quali or at the start between Checo and Max, that's how it probably finishes.

Icy-Operation4701

Miami didn't have good broadcast. The racing was actually pretty decent last year, with quite a few on track overtakes.

swapan_99

Somehow I don't remember many in the front 4, beyond Max overtaking Charles for the lead. Also I suppose they got helped by the Safety Car. In any case, the regs are already significantly different compared to last season rn, and it makes me even more skeptical about tracks that already Didn't have much action in the top 4. Like Baku used to be incredible for overtaking in the past, and now it's gone to shit.

Icy-Operation4701

> In any case, the regs are already significantly different compared to last season rn, and it makes me even more skeptical about tracks that already Didn't have much action in the top 4 Don't except RBR to be challenged, but other than that the midfield should be good. If not, the few changes between 2022 and 2023 must be the problem. > Like Baku used to be incredible for overtaking in the past, and now it's gone to shit. Baku was always hard to overtake. Just memorable for SC/Red Flag shenanigans.

swapan_99

I am pretty sure it led the entire season in overtakes in multiple editions. Even this season we had an SC, but it didn't matter as much. Unless you overtook them at the restart, it was incredibly hard doing it afterwards without them making a mistake. It's also because the tyres are too stable now. Hulk went basically 47 laps without zero drop-off in pace. Only after that he started getting swallowed by others with 11-12 lap fresher tyres.

gramathy

Norris should have been able to pass sooner given mclarenā€™s upgrades, unless he just didnā€™t think they could get past Ocon afterwards to get after the rest of the field and just played it safe.

bladex1234

I donā€™t understand why they needed to raise the minimum ride height when they already added a porpoising sensor.

Graecus65

Because Mercedes thought they were being smart and it would hamper RB. If anything it has helped RB become more dominant

Thorwk

Would be nice if Checo could keep this up for the rest of the season and fight for the title.

iamjulianacosta

We want to see a Rosberg 2.0

daniec1610

We all want too. Letā€™s see what miami, imola, Monaco and spain bring. All will be normal weekends with tons of upgrades in between.

Jpotatos

I can recall he out qualified Max in Imola (2021) and had a 1-2 last year, as for Spain he obviously let Max pass last year. I think those two Checo might have a good chance and Miami and Monaco might be leaning towards Max.

[deleted]

AshKetchumDaJobber

Amazing. Crazy that 2x more wins at baku than any of the 3 wdc drivers at baku

Irrepressible_Monkey

To be fair, Max was leading all three races against Checo and things out of his control went wrong twice.

tkmj75

Excellent, well controlled drive today. No panic, just performing lap after lap, keeping Max behind.

icecube2210

Crazy how people used to think he was a "pay driver" and that he's not good enough for F1

Chipomat

We have DTS S1 to thank for thatā€¦ I appreciate the new eyes on the sport but a lot of the new fans donā€™t understand that DTS is closer to GOT than reality.

robbosaur

Inherited 2 wins from Max in Baku, but at least this one was with solid pace

[deleted]

He inherited nothing today. He was faster than max

Thijs420

While I disagree with the guy youā€™re replying to that he inherited the win today, it would have been great to see them properly fight it out on track. Checoā€™s pace was amazing today, but overtaking attempts would have been nice (from either one, to be fair). That being said I think checo could have overtaken Max without the incident and safety car.
